After reading "Electric Storm" I was extremely puzzled to find that while I had so many things about the book that bothered me, I actually enjoyed it. One of the things that bothered me most was the author's writing style. "Electric Moon" found me adjusting somewhat to the writings of Stacey Brutger; yet, I will admit that it still is not my favorite.
"Electric Moon" begins right where the previous book ends. Raven is reeling over losing Jackson to his Alpha. She wants him back and has ten days until the Conclave in which to find a solution to her problem. Meanwhile, Raven is called home to discover she has two rogue shifters seeking asylum, Digger and Griffin. Raven knows that Griffin is hiding something but his father is one of the members of the conclave and if she is going to be successful in maneuvering in those shark infested waters, she is going to need his assistance. Oh, did I mention that Detective Scotts has sought Raven's assistance with a string of shifter murders? This time the bodies seem to implode without any detonating device.
One evening at Talon's, Raven runs into Jackson. His indifference towards her wounds her beyond belief but before she has a chance to determine what is going on, his Alpha, Kevin, approaches her with an offer to return him into her care if she will grant his one request. He wants Raven to protect his son, Aaron, from his power hungry mother, Vivien. Of course Raven agrees and Jackson is living in her home once again.
During the days prior to the Conclave, Durant, Taggert and Jackson work out a plan to diminish Raven's reckless behavior in getting into trouble as well as hurt. They each have selected a 24 hour power date with her where they will helps her harness her power as Alpha while making their personal play for her affections. As the meeting of the Conclave finally arrives, Raven is faced with passing their assessment of her strength as potential Alpha or death of herself and her charges. What she did not expect was for Vivien to challenge her right and a witches demand to have her spend a week with her coven.
Plots upon plots, murder, carnage and a betrayal lurking at every corner will ensure this to be another good read in the series; but, the cliffhanger ending does not lend much hope that Raven's future will be happy ever after or that she will have a future at all. Oh, I cannot wait for the next installment.
I don't know why I'm continuing onwards, because honestly, I hate Raven and so mostly this series just pisses me off.
Having finished the second book, we still don't have any more info. No more detail on the backstory, no more structure to what the shifter world looks like, no more understanding of her powers. I don't know anything more than I knew at the end of the last book.
And she's still a pretend badass, except now she's not even pretending anymore. I mean, someone attacks her and her beast wants to kill the attacker (who was trying to kill her), and she freaks out about struggling to control the beast. And acts like an emo douchebag, moaning about how no one is safe around her and she can't be trusted around people she cares about. Or someone (Griffin) barges into her house, acts like he owns the place, and insists on staying with her even though it's obvious that he's up to shady shit and he's giving her zero info about it. He bosses her around, comes to police crime scenes (and somehow not even the police object to this), blatantly hides things from her, and she tolerates every bit of it. Never questions his right to order her around, never throws his ass out of her house. This woman has no business being an alpha. She has power, sure (deus ex machina power, since we don't know anything about it or have any understanding of her limits), but she fucking sucks about using it, she lets everyone walk all over her, and she makes utterly idiotic decisions at all times. And I mean all times - if there's a choice to be made, Raven is like a compass pointing to the dumbest path, and she takes it every time.
It always works out for her, though, like a good Mary Sue.
This series has too many characters. They're all blending together into a mush of I-don't-give-a-fuck. There were a lot in the first book too, but that's normal for a first book. But rather than spend time digging in with Rylan, Dominic, London, Dina, Scotts (is he really racist? I didn't get that last book, but seems to be a thing in this book), Randolph, and whoever else from the first book, this one introduces like 5467938576 more that I can't keep straight and we never scratch below the surface of - Griffin, whoever his doctor friend is, Jaime, Aaron (or Adolf? whoever the alpha kid is), Jase, Kyle (I think?) and his brother, a new bitchy medical examiner who is so prejudiced that it was laughable, um, and some other people too but they are all blurring. Ob, Council, Kevin, Vivian, and people in their vicinity.
Oh, and hey, is Trish dead? From the first book? I kept waiting for her - or that other chick who wanted Taggert - to come popping up in this book as mean girls. Are they dead?
We get a little time with Jackson (meh), Durant (seems yum, but we've barely dug in), and Taggert (ugh ... plus, is no one else skeeved out that he's like 18 and we're told she's 28 in the first book?), because they have a date each with her, but again, no development. And for reals, do people label this reverse harem? Because she's barely kissed each of them one time, and we're 2 books in, and given that she freaks out any time anyone touches her, I feel like we're a long way from her being with one person, much less more than one.
And I'm sure other people have mentioned this in reviews, so I'm just going to touch lightly on it. This series seems to be trying really hard to emulate Anita Blake. But I wish it could emulate the good AB - I loved it for the first 4-5 books - and just leap into the bullshit of the later books. But the cast of characters is pretty much a one-to-one thing - Randolph is so clearly Edward (he was always my favorite), Taggert is Nathaniel (which probably explains part of why I don't like him, because I never liked Nathaniel either), and etc. I mean, it has been a long time since I read AB, and the direct correlation of the characters is still pretty obvious to me. Except Raven wishes she was Anita - before Anita because a walking magical STD, she was smart, strong, super capable, and in no way a pretend badass.
Last note: there are some SERIOUS copyedit errors in this book. There were some in the first book, but I feel like this book is 500% more - wrong word choices, sentences that were incomplete, all that stuff. If that's the kind of thing that bugs you, definitely steer clear.
Even though I really really shouldn't, I'm going to read one more because I would like to know what the fuck her powers are. And it seems like the next book is about that. I feel compelled - I can get a little OCD about finishing a series, and it kills me to have info dangled in front of me. I'm going to kick myself, though, I know it.
If you want an unbiased review stop reading now - i LUUUUVED this book, and whether it deserves it or not in my heart of heart i gave it 5 stars (5 stars = a book I would read again). I waited impatiently for this book to be published and it was worth the wait, it was full of sexual tension without descending into a sexcapade (at least not yet). You need to have read the previous one to follow the story line and there are some weak points to it but overall very satisfying read and a series I will keep following.
Raven is still trying to gain control of her supernatural case of multiple personality disorder. Most of the book describes her flaky musings about whether she wants to be a pack leader and who she is attracted to.
I hadn't read the first book in a while and felt the author could have done a better job recapping. Just as things are starting to come together, the book ends on a cliffhanger. Hopefully the author gives Raven a backbone in book 3. The series has promise, but is too angsty for my taste.
Interesting enough story line, decent world building, weak MC who isn't as alpha as the author claims and atrocious editing. Incorrect tenses, missing letters, the word "of" added to sentences it has no business being in and incorrect use of a title made up by the author. Every mistake yanked me out of the story, ruining the moment.
Another interesting story. Raven doesn't know what to do with all of these men. I enjoyed the dates that she had with her men. A nice mix of steamy and romantic with bits of sleuthing too. This series continues to remind me of the Anita Blake series. It has the urban fantasy romance, polyamory, and mystery but quite a bit more acceptance for such a strong woman.
So...some of the rough patches in world building are smoothed out, not in a logical way, but through emersion in the story. It would have been nice for the author to explain what the hell is going on, but I can appreciate the draw of the mystery.
This is the 2nd installment in the Raven Investigations series. I enjoyed this story and found it being a different take on females in the shifter world. The storyline was entertaining and characters interesting, so I look forward to the next part of the series.
We learn more about shifter and pack society, but honestly, it still doesn't make much sense to me with alphas and slaves and rogues and females and mating. I'm hugely skeptical at the enormous plot hole of how Raven was still so clueless about all of this after living with her shifter misfits for 10 years since she left the labs and also working as a private consultant for the police before she was officially appointed as a Region. She keeps emphasizing that her conduit and shifter abilities are supposed to be a *secret*, but coming out as an alpha should be raising a ton of questions???
The relationships with her various harem members are slowly progressing which was nice. We also gain some more understanding about the conflict between her innate conduit and the experimental shifter beasts inside her. What I didn't like was how she still has no idea exactly which beasts are in her other than a wolf and the mysterious "darkness" around her core. Let's go back to... it's been friggin 10 years since she's been free???? Why has she not done more research about herself yet? And on that note, she starts taking lessons from London for self-defense. WHY ARE YOU ONLY LEARNING NOW OMG.
Raven is a highly frustrating faux alpha character - she's still getting pushed around with key decisions by the males around her... but once again, I do like the world, just not the storyline or the plot details that have been revealed so far. Closer to a barely 3-star than the first book - there is a slight improvement with a cohesive plot. I did find lots of typos though.
There's just something about the way this author explains things that makes my head hurt. Seriously, these books overtax my brain trying to decrypt the explanations about how stuff works. It's really sad, because it could've been a 5-star series, easy, if not for the fumbling way things are explained. I don't get half as much out of the books that I should, and it's annoying as hell. But I'll keep reading, because... you gotta love these characters.
I loved this book, even though I felt a really strong influence form Laurell K. Hamilton the pace of the story just grips you from the start, can't wait for the next one.
Electric Moon is the second book in the Raven Investigations series. I'm going to be honest, I don't know that I really want to continue with the series. I mean I want to in that I am curious as to what happens and I don't like leaving series unfinished, unless the first book was truly awful. I think the biggest issue I had with this book, is there is too damn much going on. It was like the author decided to throw all these different plot lines into one story without really fleshing out any of them.
I feel like I got whiplash from everything going on. Basically put there was too much going on that none of what was going on was really given a fair shake, it was just a bunch of mini-plots that sorta came together, but in a way that felt really shallow. It lacked the depth of world-building I usually appreciate. And my eyes feel tired and gritty over this.
There were too many new characters thrown at us in this book, some of which are never properly named (and even those who were named I'm almost sure some of them we will never see again). For example, I expect Vivian like Trish and Jackie from the first book will never be seen or heard from again, despite being one of the "villains" of this book. That there was too much going on which also made the villains of this book a joke really, cardboard cutout villains that were boring and predictable. And the author does tend to do this thing where some characters will be in one book and we'll never see them again.
I'm not sure what is going on with Raven, her powers, beasts or . I'm just exhausted. Raven doesn't even get a chance to breathe. And just when it seems like she's making progress, shit happens, and fear consumes her and she regresses. I wanted to see more of the guys and her relationships with them (though there was some attempt) but every time we were teased a taste it was interrupted due to everything that's going on. I think I may give the series one more book before calling it quits.
Trigger Warning: POV: HEA: Sexual themes: Cliffhanger:
I'm really torn by this book, by this series. I really want to like it as the premise of the story, the characters, the various plots all sound so good, but the actual execution is terrible! The editing, or severe lack of, irritates the living daylights out of me. With over 50 errors in the book, I'm not sure if the author is making a huge heap of typos or if she doesn't simply know the difference between breath and breathe, between your and you're, between lose and loose etc etc. I find it so distracting and I have to read sentences over and over to work out what she is trying to say. Please for the love of readers, get a better editor. I even do this as part of my ARC role for other authors, for FREE! I'm sure someone else would do it too!
The other part that I cannot like about this book is actually the main character, Raven. She's supposed to be the tough alpha chick with lots of power with strands of various shifter DNA running through her veins, but most of the time her power eludes her and she's left defenceless or with the tiniest dribble of electrical power that does basically nothing to help her. She's such a walkover too. There's various shifters in her life: some part of her pack; others who randomly seem to appear in her house and they all take over! They push her about, boss her around and basically act as if they are alphas even when she knows they are up to something. Does she do anything to stop them? Does she heck! Does she say anything to them about they way things are going? Does she heck! Does she just sit back and put up with it all? Of course she does! What kind of alpha is this woman?! Basically she sucks as a tough girl and as an alpha!
I did, however, really like the idea of the drugs killing off the shifters and really wanted to find out who and why all this was happening, which is why I had to force myself through the whole book, but I am done with this series now. I cannot subject myself to any more of it!
After I finished book one I debated continuing cause it had so much promise but I found it badly delivered.
Like she's meant to be this super rare conduit that is either coveted of killed, yet what do we even know about it? She can manipulate energy. Sometime. With damage to herself. I fail to see how that's special. We are told she hides what she is and I assume no one knows until she casually says it directly to the tiger mate and there's no reaction. Like oh I must have missed the chapter when he found.
And in the first book when FL and that panther girl had a argument over breakfast and FL said how she was a prisoner in the labs and raped and all that in front of 2 of her soon to be mates yet nothing, NOTHING further was said. No out rage, no questions, no comfort offered. Nothing!
You are just tossed into the world with an expectation that you already know how it works. Even after book 2 it's still hazy.
Who and where are her mates or soon to be mates?
She's meant to be alpha and powerful yet she's bossed around and gives up on getting what she wants all the time.
Also, what is with the covers? It should be a woman decked from neck to fingertip to foot. With either silvertiped hair or twisted up in a bun. I absolutely hate when covers don't depict the character properly.
Really like this series so far. What an exciting way to end it though! I’m glad the next book is out already. Only thing that frustrated me.... Slight Spoiler ahead... ...was the conclave meeting. It made very little sense to me that Raven so easily agreed to the witch’s terms. There was zero negotiating! Raven is not stupid, but this easy capitulation was totally out of character. And a week???? Is she insane? I guess it actually kind of pissed me off that she would agree like that. They are probably going to lock her up, do horrible experiments on her, steal her powers or life force, etc. And she just agreed?!? Way too stupid for our Raven. But oh well, I guess we’ll see in a future book. Probably the next one. But I still love the series and Raven :-)
This story was good but it needs some more finessing, some more editing. Firstly I have highlighted some of the typos and errors I’ve seen in hopes the author will correct them at some point. They are small typos but the amount of them is a bit much imo.
But I also wish it was edited more to tighten up the plot. I’m still unclear exactly how shifter society works. I get the general idea, but not the intricacies that seem to be assumed here that the reader just knows. Things aren’t explained well.
Yet I’m fascinated by the story and I want to see where it goes so I will continue on.
Raven sets out to get recognized by the council as alpha of her own pack. She is also determined to claim Jackson. She manages to do both and find the culprit behind exploding shifters. The book ends with Raven "cresting," meaning she may shift. She made a pact with Rylan that if she can't control the monster within, he would kill her. She has one week with the witches (part of a deal for her pack status) to control her monster or face the consequences.
There is a lot that goes on in these books and not everything is really explained in detail. However, there is a ton of mystery, action, and sexual tension to keep the reader interested.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I think I have to be done with this series. It's a hard decision because I sorta liked it. But, I'm too frustrated with being confused about what's happening, who is speaking and the lack of forward progression in her relationships. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware progress was made, but there is no depth. I feel like 30% of the books are descriptions of electricity. And the case mysteries just aren't compelling. I like the premise, but it's just not enough to continue, hoping the series gets better. It never takes me 3 days to read 1 book, especially over a weekend, so that's pretty telling.
I hit 18% and I just couldn't read any more of the nonsense. She is always on a case, she is always not sleeping, things are always trying to kill her and they almost succeed every time. No character development, what happened to her, who are those men around her, can we learn more, can we have some relationship conversations? We are constantly in the dark about what she thinks, about what is happening around her, about other people around her. I don't fucking care about the cases. I'm not reading it any more.
Love the main characters. However, i feel like sometimes there is a bit of contradictory happening with the lead character Raven. In one moment the she trusts herself to make decisions and in the next she doesn't. I know everyone tends to have some inner wars with themselves but this trust herself don't trust herself is a bit much especially when her character is supposed to have been this strong able to stand alone female. Other than that I have loved the books and the characters that have been introduced are being developed nicely.
3.5* Good read Predictable bad guy... Her head of security should be fired with the amount of times she got attacked in her own house or backyard That was my main problem with the book i.e she kept getting attacked every damn chapter... give me a break once in a while per favor!!! And still nobody got any further than first base... I’m all for « slow burn » but I mean this is too slow even for a sloth Still a good read though and will be reading 3rd book
I really am loving the story and progression of power. The MFC characters is what knocks the stars off. She blindly does what she wants when everyone is telling very valid reasons not to. She trusts no one and listens to one's advice even though she is obviously over her head and others know the answers. I get that gets the plot to stretch some of this is just plain ridiculous.
The characters are amazing and the murder mystery is really cool. The way the story is written from the start of the shifters are amazing. I feel so involved with everyone.
The downside is the backstory. We still don’t know what’s really happening to Raven or what she is.
Ravens life keeps getting more complicated. Especially now that she has to basically barter for Jackson to be returned to her pack. Plus someone’s released a new drug which explodes shifters! That plus the politics of becoming an alpha male wish a vacation for her lol. And what is the mystery creature in her. All the drama llamas in this one
I am so sick and tired of Raven. She’s not a strong heroine at all and alllwayyss runs away from her problems and things that make her uncomfortable. There’s so many issues I have with her I’m not even going to bother. This is a superr slow burn book, I wouldn’t really call it a romance. Will not continue.
I liked this one more than the first and this time a decent ending. So yay for that. Raven is no longer hiding and coming to terms with her pack. A small mystery and the main plot nicely intertwined. Favourite character is Taggart, I look forward to seeing who he becomes. Second would be the assassin. Want to see where that goes.
