A Hopeless It's been one helluva morning... And Hope hasn't even found the body. At least not yet. After a twelve year absence, investigative reporter Hope Walker is back home. In Hopeless, Idaho. And it's not going well. It seems the town and its citizens haven't changed much. Still weird. Still nosy. And a few of them? Downright hateful. And now Hope has a serious problem. Because one of the hateful is dead. And she's the prime suspect.
A Hopeless Walter Pimsey was distinguished, gruff, sophisticated, and a bit of a bully. He was all of those things. And by Saturday morning, he was also quite dead. After a twelve-year absence, investigative reporter Hope Walker has been back home in Hopeless, Idaho, for two weeks. Her scorecard? Lost a job. Gained a job. Got hit by a car. Made up with an old friend. Reunited with an old enemy. Made herself a new enemy. Found a dead body. And met one seriously handsome Sheriff. Now Hope Walker has a new set of problems. And another dead body. This investigation takes her to the Thorndale Mansion - home of one horrible woman, her rather miserable family, and their peculiar servants. But finding the murderer and getting to the truth will be difficult. It seems the grand old house holds plenty of suspects. The question which one of them is capable of murder?
A Hopeless Discovery Wanda Wegman invented the pumpkin chomping dragon at the pumpkin patch. Then three years ago, she mysteriously vanished. Hope has her work cut out for her. The trail has run cold and this investigation seems particularly hopeless. Plus, Hope is a little preoccupied. She's babysitting three rambunctious kids for her best friend Katie. And the sheriff in town has got her a little distracted. Is this the crime that Hope just can't solve? Daniel Carson lives in Nebraska with his wife and their perfect adoring children who have never ever misbehaved. Not once. Honest.
His days are a mixture of... teaching, cooking, driving, cleaning, more cooking, lots more driving, cleaning and more driving. So much driving. When the children finally go to bed, Daniel writes stories.
The Hope Walker Mysteries is a cozy mystery series with action, humor, and just a bit of romance. A Hopeless Murder is the first book in the series.
The Baking School Mysteries is a culinary cozy mystery series where the food is a delicious, the people are nosy but lovable, and murder is always on the menu. Fudge Frosting Murder is the first book in the series.
Pretty standard fare, nice easy cozy mystery set with Hope Walker and friends. The kids are hilarious, Katie, the best friend is a great character, and while the books are nothing earth shattering, they’re great to read in between my heavier read for a good chuckle, witty banter, and good character development.
Excellent addition to the genre. Characters are (mostly) not caricatures, not perfect, and not useless. Book 1 gives a clear introduction to Hope and to Granny, Bess, and Katie. Granny is almost a caricature, but likeable for sure. Bess is a bit of a mystery even after three books, and Katie is growing into a real person and not just a complainer.
The plots are believable and well done, and Katie's propensity for fingering the wrong person at first is a nice comic touch.
It's hard to believe these are the first the author has written in the genre. He has Katie believable (though how long she can get away with being Darwin's "girlfriend" is yet another mystery). She will have to develop some additional skills somewhere; I thought perhaps Rebecca would add that in A Hopeless Discovery (book 3), but it appears it is not to be.
I am looking forward to other books in the series. It amuses me there are 25 planned -- this is a small town, dontcha know -- but I will continue to read.
Book 1 - A Hopeless Murder I borrowed the first three books of this series in the boxset from Kindle Unlimited, after it was recommended by a friend. I am going to review each book individually before the boxset.
We meet Hope Walker as she's traveling to her hometown to attend her grandmother's funeral. From her groundbreaking story being squashed on threat of lawsuit to her firing and being blackballed in the industry. Her arrival in her hometown of Hopeless for the funeral of her Granny who's not really dead is just the icing on said cake. It also sets the tone for the rest of this book.
We meet Sheriff Ed Kline who really doesn't like Hope (the feeling is mutual), presents her with twelve-year old parking tickets for payment. We meet Bess, Granny's partner in the business and many others, including a stranger to her, Patrick Crofton who is engaged to Gemima Clark. Gemima and Hope have always hated each other, it's one of her least complicated relationships.
After getting quite drunk at said funeral, Hope passes out in the apartment above the bar. Waking hungover and needing coffee she goes downstairs to the bar. While the coffee is brewing, she gets a call that could be a new position in Spokane, but she will need to be there Friday at three or lose her chance at it. Then she literally trips over a dead body, the body of Sheriff Ed Kline. Who does one call in an emergency when the emergency is the local law?
Katie is Hope's best friend, or she was at the time when she left Hopeless twelve years ago. Chris Rodger's Katie's husband opens the door when Hope arrives to tell Katie her boss is dead.
Katie is angry with her for leaving without a word and not communicating all this time. Meeting Katie's children is a hoot, little hellions they are and encouraged by their mother. Katie does know who to call and that's how we get to meet Detective Alex Kramer from Boise. He instructs them to call Dr. Bridges, head surgeon at the hospital and occasional coroner.
Hope becomes the leading suspect in the case and as such she needs to find the actual killer before Friday so she can go to her interview in Spokane. She begins with the things Katie had shown her about the possibility of the Sheriff's affair. Then meets with Katie again before leaving her being questioned by Detective Kramer.
At Granny's house, an exhausted Hope falls asleep in her childhood bedroom. That is until she hears gunfire and discovers a bit of a competition outside. Expecting to see Granny and Bess trap shooting, she's surprised to find it's Detective Kramer going head-to-head against Bess.
Alex had been invited to dinner and somehow Granny gets it into her head that Hope should shoot against Alex.
I do love when a man underestimates a woman, but Alex is generous about it.
There are truly hysterical scenes in this one along with all the suspense of the murder investigation. We also get a hint of attraction between Alex and Hope as well as a surprise ending.
As I continue with the second book in this series, I can say with certainty this new to me author is a winner.
Book 2 - A Hopeless Heist As this book opens, Hope finds a note that has been slipped under the door of the Library it simply says I didn't mean to do it. Apparently, someone wants her to solve a mystery, but Hope has plans for this day. 'Kidnapping' her best friend Kate for a hike. Kate has been told they are going hunting garage sales, but somehow, she figures out the ploy. Leading to an amusing beginning to this tale as Katie truly doesn't want anything to do with exercise.
They make a stop at Stank hardware where Hope buys a filtration bottle for their hike. There they meet Juan who asks Hope to look into his niece April, who works for Stank. She's changed and he's worried she's in trouble. She's not sure what she'll be able to do but she agrees after getting some idea of who to talk to about her.
From a perch on their hike, Kate sees Gemima, Mayor Wilma Jenkins and a stranger by the cabin that Hope was once going to buy. A very interesting trio. Joining them they are introduced to Mr. Toomey a probate lawyer since Patrick Crofton didn't have a will. In six-months all of his property will be available to be purchased with the exception of those sold to clear debts. Guess who wants it...
I love Hope's Granny she really is something else and so is her boss, Earl Denton owner and editor of the Hopeless News. He's going on vacation leaving Hope to attend and report on the paper's biggest donor's annual party. Mrs. Thorndale uses this party to show off her wealth, influence and her Knutsen painting. Of course, Hope is not dressed for such an elite occasion but that doesn't stop her.
She runs into Valerie Thorndale, and they strike up a sort of friendship before meeting up with Isabella Thorndale. The woman is truly a piece of work. However, finding her butler in a puddle of blood in front of the painting, puts a bit of a pall on the occasion.
Alex and Hope working together is a recipe for disaster but also it works.
There is such chemistry here, but neither one of them seems to know what to do about it. I love Kate her husband Chris and the antics of her children. Nick the barista, Granny, Bess and friends, and the roundabout way this murder is solved.
Since I borrowed this the bundle of the first three books, I am already reading the next one.
Book 3 - A Hopeless Discovery As this book opens, Sheriff Alex Kramer gives a case to Hope. It's a murder case but not the usual type. It's the murder of a goat.
If this isn't enough, her best friend Katie's babysitter for her weekend away with her husband is sick and guess who the choice is to replace her. Everyone gets quite the kick out of this, especially Granny and Bess.
Of course, this isn't going to be a normal babysitting job, not with Dominic, Lucy and baby Celia. It's the trip to Bubba's Pumpkin Patch that truly is the highlight.
So now Hope has a goat murder, a possible job offer, a skeleton, the care of three kids and a jealous Alex to deal with. Not to mention her best friend Katie when she comes home to the news of what Dominic found.
These things are both hysterical and suspenseful as this story unfolds. I am truly enjoying this fun filled, page turning series.
Dead bodies, mean girls, and hilarious happenings in a small town called Hopeless
From the very first page in book 1 you knew that Hope was a mess and that a fun ride was ahead. As Hope is headed home for her granny’s funeral, her newspaper article is cancelled, she’s accused of manufacturing details, and she is fired. Comforting herself with Cheetos and pop, she’s the last person to arrive to the service in Hopeless, Idaho. A place she has not been to in twelve years.
From there we meet a host of characters that had me laughing out loud. Throughout the books, Hope’s penchant for stumbling upon dead bodies gets her in trouble. That and her flair for the dramatic reveal alas Hercule Poirot, except he did it better and more accurately.
Best friend Katie and her kids are a riot. Five-year-old Dominic, who’s favorite movie is Die Hard, and Hope end up with a special bond.
I was glad to find this box set because once I got started I didn’t want to stop. The town is struggling between new and old ideas and Hope is trying to figure out what to do next.
Throw in forever nemesis Gemima, old scores, old wounds, a corn maze and much more make this box set a fun, funny, twisty read. Give it a read and see if you get Gilmore Girl vibes like I did.
This is a very enjoyable story line. Three murders in a small town is a little like Murder She Wrote, but the author does a very good job making them plausible. The characters are very well written and lovable. I specifically adore the authors nod to the Mom as an unsung hero with a thankless job. I literally laughed out loud throughout this series. The plots flow nicely and move along well. I really can’t say enough good things about this character and these mysteries.
This series of books, this cast of characters are the funniest and most entertaining books I think that I have ever read. The dialogue between Hope and Katie makes me scream with almost hysterical laughter and almost wet my pants type laughter. I’ve laughed harder (I think) than I Ever had. And the mysteries are good too. I can’t believe that man writes these women characters so perfectly….I intend to keep reading them and highly recommend that everyone read them.
I like to by sets of books so if I like it I don’t have to look for the next one. From the beginning I was hooked. I read a lot of cozy mysteries and they all have the same theme. But it is the characters that keep me reading. I laughed out loud so many times. A few times I was laughing an hour later. All of these characters are great. Now I’m looking for the next three books in the series. Thank you Daniel Carson.
I absolutely loved this series. I have never read anything by Daniel Carson before but I was totally impressed by his writing. He kept me guessing who done it to the last 2 chapters in the books! I liked how he brought the story lines of each character together and carried them over to the next book in the series. I am looking forward to seeing more books from Daniel! He is an outstanding author.
This is a great cozy series featuring a former Portland investigative reporter returning home after 12 years following her termination from a Portland newspaper. The first three books in the series do a great job providing the back story and offering numerous humorous scenes with her best friend, Katie and Katie’s three kids. I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to the series and look forward to reading more.
I loved spending time with Hope and her very funny friend Katie. The murders are pretty well planned and got the old grey cells working over time. I went to sleep trying to solve these cases. The gorgeous sheriff was a nice treat as well. I really enjoyed these story's and the characters. Awesome book.
Great stories! I really enjoy the banter between Hope and well, everyone. Hope is an independent woman who doesn't need anyone, other than Granny, Bess and Katie to keep her out of trouble, mostly out of trouble!
I do not understand how the author, ( a male) has best female friendship figured out, but these booms are terrifically good. Plenty of action as well as humor and even the cerebral mystery. I loved every word.
I keep asking myself how does this funny guy write like he's in the minds of nutjob country women? How does he know us so well? He must have his own somewhere that he's related to. I just hope he keeps making us proud! His books are a joy to read.
I like the humor mixed in with the mystery. Characters are funny. Descriptions of places and characters spot on. Romantic connections intriguing and keeps the reader wanting to read more.
I went on a holiday in all 3 books. And enjoyed myself immensely while doing so. I laughed often and cried lot more. I was unable to put the book(s) down but could not stop reading, so now to catch up on sleep. I recommend reading all 3 and I personally cannot wait till more episodes appear.
I really liked these three books, they were funny, interesting, intriguing, with some scary people you have to love and oddly satisfying plots, these books are some of my favourite. Completely clean as well, bonus!
Daniel Carson’s Hope Walker mysteries are so fun and exciting!
These books were so fun to read, I laughed a lot. I like mysteries, and I really like mysteries that have fun in them. There are so many laugh out loud parts. Greatly enjoyable!
For a fairly bumbling investigator, Hope Walker always seems to come out on top. The plots of these three books are good and show a lot of imagination. The characters show a lot of imagination too, because they’re nothing like anyone I’ve ever known or heard of.
All three of the books are very well written. You get to know the characters and places as well. I hope the rest of the books in the series are done as well as the first three.
An engrossing well.written book. Pleasant and gripping story. Excellent characterization and realistic. Carson clearly writes with his heart and injects mystery and humor in his books. Highly recommended!!!
I absolutely love this series! I fell in love with all the characters and their banter and sarcasm. I swear the author was a woman not a man, lol. I wish the books were a lot longer, but they were definitely jampacked. I’m already on the next set.
