5☆ A Magical Delight, Full of Children's Spooky Poetry! A Must Read!

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is the perfect Children's spooky Poetry book and fits right in with it being October and Halloween.

I have to say this book is simply a delight to look at, the striking orange cover is eye catching and this is one of those books that feels special to hold and treasure. Would make the perfect gift.

The Poems are fun, quirky, humorous, some I already know which was so nice to see and bought back childhood memories.
Most of the poems had pictures which were beautifully illustrated and helped bring the poems to life.

Some of the wording might be a lil tricky for younger readers so I would definitely recommend giving a lil helping hand.

I definitely had some favourite poems, that had me giggling out loud.
Examples:
*Song of the Witches ( when the internet wasn't working) ,
*An Example of My Amazing Ability to make People Spontaneously Combust without even touching them
*The Witches Cookbook,
* How to Turn Your Teacher Purple
* The Magic Kitchen Carpet
* Ooshus Magooshus
* Song of the Witches from Macbeth

I loved the eclectic mix of old and new, with poems from the greats like Shakespeare and Lewis Carol, which was wonderful to see.

So as you can see this Captivating Poetry book really is a Magical Delight.
Children and Adults alike will indeed have lots of fun reading all the Enchanting Poems, and who knows it may just inspire you to create your own spooky poetry.
I can't recommend reading this gorgeous book enough, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Thank you to Kaleidoscopic tours for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Beautifully presented in an orange clothbound hardback edition, Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is a collection of magical poems by Paul Cookson and is a delight to hold in the hand. Containing a selection of over 70 poems by different authors, there's enough variety in these poems for children to suit all reading tastes. Here's an example from page 33.

WITCH'S WISHLIST BY B.J. LEE *
beetle toe
henbane
first snow
plantain
pig's feet
toad flax
jacklebeet
beeswax
dragon teeth
fairy wing
winter heath
ginseng
wood ears
cypress oil
Job's tears
pennyroyal
burdock root
mustard seed
eye of newt
jimson weed
black mallow
stirring crook
goat sallow
spell book

Lovely black and white illustrations complement the poems in the book, but the real shining light of illustrator Eilidh Muldoon's work is her magically evocative cover design. Don't you just love it? Perfect for Halloween and winter reading.

My favourite poem from the collection by far is Somewhere in the Library from page 112.

SOMEWHERE IN THE LIBRARY BY STEWART HENDERSON *
Somewhere in the library
there are fierce and friendly beasts.
Dragons, cowardly lions
enjoying midnight feasts.
Somewhere in the library
there are whirlpools and lagoons,
coves and crags and picnics
with pop and macaroons.

Somewhere in the library
there are smugglers' hidden caves,
and voyages and shipwrecks,
where adventures come in waves.
Somewhere in the library
there looms a Gruffalo,
and Twits and Gangsta Grannies
and a wardrobe full of snow...

... Where the White Witch turns the pages,
her icy fingers vexed,
as Voldermort is reading
what happens to him next.
Somewhere in the library
down a whizzing country road -
an amphibian with driving gloves...
the hapless Mr Toad.

There's a Stig, and Railway Children
all present and correct,
whilst underneath the floorboards
the Borrowers collect.
But somewhere in the library
there is someone very wise.
Her title is librarian
which is really a disguise...

... For she's a gatherer of magic
and a confidante of elves,
whose legends she has catalogued
and filed on ship-shape shelves
And she knows a thousand sagas
and ten thousand thousand tales,
she's heard the yarns of hobbits,
and the ocean dreams of whales

So, let me share her mystery,
one secret so sublime -
her special prayer that starts each day... goes...
"Once upon a time..."

This is a quick read, and other favourites from the collection include: The Magic Kitchen Carpet by Paul Cookson, Hatastrophe by Dannielle Viera and Something Down the Plughole by Neal Zetter.

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble - Magical Poems chosen by Paul Cookson and illustrated by Eilidh Muldoon is recommended for children, teachers and parents looking for a magical and spooky read.

Reflections and lessons learned:
“…you can tell that his spell hasn’t gone very well – just like this poem that’s run out of rhyme and, disappointingly, lacks a magical ending…”

“But somewhere in the library there is someone very wise. Her title is librarian which is really a disguise...”

A book of literal magical prose that doesn’t take itself too seriously! After a Spring to Summer pandemic lockdown of the whole family playing Harry Potter lego games, and then explaining the idea behind a midsummer nights dream after reading a poem on the longest day of the year, what came first for us - the surreal dreams that a only a week of school prescribed self isolation can influence and allow or the perfectly timed book read? Wonderful and fantastical imagination for all (including comedy words to make children snigger for hours - Abracadabra anyone!) - looking forward to reading more by Cookson and buying a hard copy of this for the family to enjoy over the next few magical days before normality returns or the witches hide again.

No matter how many times I close down my work environment at the end of the day, I think that I’ll always be listening extra closely to the questionable silence of a library being put to rest. I could face the light switch with my back to the empty space but I’ll turn around just in case the skeleton starts the party early…

“This library is haunted. If you go in there, you’ll never come out. There’s hidden traps and secret passages labyrinthine and deserted except for... no one knows”

Bloomsbury have really outdone themselves with this beautiful cloth bound hardback; it's a book to be treasured and brought out every year as the nights become cold and dark. Not only is it beautiful on the outside but the poems chosen by Paul Cookson and the illustrations by Eilidh Muldoon on the inside are absolutely breathtaking too.

Paul Cookson has done a wonderful job of gathering together magical poems in this Halloween anthology. Poems from the classic such as Shakespeare, Carroll and Tennyson alongside modern poems that tickled and delighted me. I couldn't possibly pick a favourite as they are all wonderful and some made me laugh while some gave me the shivers but the quality of the writing is exceptionally high.

It's amazing how the writing from the likes of William Shakespeare and Lewis Carroll have stood the test of time, the former's poem from Macbeth lending the title of the book. They really didn't seem out of place set among the modern poems, which undoubtedly had more fun and humour in them but seem like modern classics in their own right.

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is a wonderful mix of classic and modern magical poems that are perfect for, but not limited to, Halloween. It's a wonderful book for kids of any age from 8 to 80 and I'll certainly be treasuring my copy.

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

This poetry book came out in September, but I wanted to post this review at a spookier time of year. Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble, collected by Paul Cookson, is perfect for celebrating this year's rather different Halloween.

There are classic, atmospheric favourites, such as Shakespeare's witches and Tennyson's The Kraken, but also lots of new poems to try. The Song of the Witches (When Their Internet Wasn't Working) by Stan Cullimore was an instant favourite of mine, as was Magic Love Potion by Liz Brownlee

It is a collection you can dip in and out of, and I've had lots of fun reading it aloud to my children, who also loved Eilidh Muldoon's illustrations.

My daughter really enjoyed I Feel Like I Know Them - immediately guessing who the poem was about when I read it to her.

So many of these poems will bring peals of laughter in classrooms and at home. But as well as laughs, there are fantastic twists - Oh How I Love A Unicorn will go one of two ways with young readers! Somewhere in the Library would be perfect to display on school library walls.

Fire Burn, Cauldron Bubble is also a perfect collection for engaging children with poetry and inspiring them to create a ghostly poem of their own.

From the silly to the spooky, to the sinister this collection of poems is perfect for the witching season. As with any collection of poems some speak to you more than others but there is an excellent mix included between classic and new poems.

The book itself is stunningly bought to life by the illustrations from Eilidh Muldoon. From its striking pumpkin orange, with black block print, cover to the endpapers and the whimsical illustrations such as this one to illustrate ‘A Cold Spell’.

A few of my favourite poems were:
The silly - I once asked a wizard to make me a sandwich by Graham Denton
The sinister - Ooshus Magooshus by Jason Seigal which warns of Stranger danger
The artistic - Magic Love Potion by Liz Brownlee Shaped like a potion bottle
The cute - The Cool Dragon by Jo Mularczyk reminds me of that John Lewis ad
The classic and the pastiche - Song of the Witches by Shakespeare, and the homage which adds the subtitle (when the internet wasn’t working) by Stan Cullimore
The rhyme and atmosphere made by Witchy Magic by Mary Serenc

If you are at all squeamish you might not like Oh How I Love a Unicorn by Paul Cookson!! So follow it up with How to Cast a Spell if you are Vegetarian by Roger Stevens

The Magic Kitchen Carpet by Paul Cookson that speaks of the immense joy and adventure that our imagination brings.

But I think my top two are This is my Library by Angela Topping and Somewhere in the Library by Stewart Henderson which espouse the magic of books and the cast the librarian as a bewitching creature who is ‘a gatherer of magic and a confidante of elves’.

Thank you to Bloomsbury and Blue at Kaleidoscopic Tours for the copy for the purposes of this honest review.

An amazing collection of spooky little poems for children by Paul Cookson. I picked this one up for fun and to see if I could find any poems I might remember from my childhood in the collection.
Absolutely loved the beautiful illustrations alongside the poems. This book is a real Halloween treat I suppose, and would make a great gift.
I enjoyed reading most of the poems and the collection overall is quite fun. I found some of them really witty. A lot if these are about wizards and witches and interestingly enough, one can tell a bunch of poems in here are Harry Potter inspired. I would have loved to see more spooky poems in the list though. Also, quite a bunch of these are in prose form and I'm not sure if prose is a right format for a poetry book that is targeted at kids. Some of these poems fell really flat.

Here's a list of poems I liked from the collection:

Whizzo McWizard's Amazing Creations (witty)

The Wizard on His Bike (funny)

The Magic Kitchen Carpet (witty, atmospheric)

We Don't Believe (atmospheric, punchline at the end)

Witch's Wishlist (witty)

Granny Gristle's Birthday (icky, halloween apt)

*Harry Potter inspired:
- Harry Hobgoblin's Superstore
- I feel like I know them
- Proper Wand Care

Hoblins and Boglins (scary, halloween apt)

Song of the Witches, Macbeth (atmospheric)

Song of the Witches (when their internet wasn't working) (funny)

Hatastrophe (funny)

Oh How I Love a Unicorn (excalates quickly, funny)

Smellcheck (Witty)

The Magician with Ambition (all rhyme, witty)

How to Cast a Spell if you are Vegetarian (funny)

Paul Cookson has done again, has chosen superb poems for children for this magic collection, including some of his own. You will find a great range of poems within the ‘magic’ topic, from Shakespeare to Zephaniah. Just like ‘The works’ this book is a fantastic addition to any primary classroom. The poems can be read, performed, used alongside other books and topics. I also love the illustrations, they could help the children to create their own personal responses to the poem they read, hear or perform.

What a truly stunning book!

In hardback form, the black shiny print really pops on the bright orange background….. even has a shine if you hold it in the right directing.
Poems from the old and new, some I have read before but the majority were new to me. A few chucklesome moments and the illustrations really brought them to life.

A few of my favourite poems were;
The Wizard on His Bike,
Arfle-Barfle-Gloopish-Curd!
How To Turn Your Teacher Purple!
Oh How I Love A Unicorn!

A must read book and the perfect addition to anyone shelf, be that personal, library or school!

I did like this collection of poetry and it had a good mix of authors from various time periods and backgrounds. I did think that some of the poems shouldn't have been included as they weren't as good as the others but that is just me being hyper critical of them and there may be some who do not see them as problem. This is a good gift book and I'd recommend it for any children who like spooky things.

I was attracted to this book of poetry by the title alone and loved this entertaining collection of themed poems spanning many centuries. The poem spoken by the witches in Macbeth sit next to those by John Agard and Paul Cookson. It is lovely, fun reading for all ages especially in the run up to Halloween. My favourite has to be Somewhere in the Library by Stewart Henderson which encapsulates the magic of books in a few pages.

This was brilliant! Ada loves nothing more than reading a good rhyming books. With halloween approaching, we wanted to dive in to reading these lovely poems to her, to really introduce her to the variations of rhymes and styles, She absolutely loved all the poems. She especially liked the boy who asked for the sandwich! It is a lovely set of poems, from all times and great for a variety of ages. Brilliant Book!

Even before you open the cover of this gorgeous anthology you will be spellbound, Eilidh Muldoon’s beautiful illustrations are showcased in black on a vibrant orange background. Once you dive in to the magical poems by fab poets such as Benjamin Zephaniah and Liz Brownlee you will want to keep reading - ‘just one more’ indeed! My absolute favourite is a poem by Stewart Henderson called Somewhere in the Library (I wonder why?!) but there are so many that I love here.

Okay first up – I had never heard of half these poems, and I am so jealous of the kids who get to read this and grow up with it! The illustrations by Eilidh Muldoon are perfectly cute and great little additions to the anthology, keeping both myself and potential little ones interested from one page to the next!

I love this book! It's a beautiful collection of poems with a magical theme. What I like most us the mix of old and modern poems, with the likes of Lewis Carroll and William Shakespeare with Benjamin Zephaniah and Brian Moses.
There are illustrations throughout and a great mix of poems, some short and snappy with longer, rhyming poems and also shape poems too. I love the magical theme.
This book will be great to share with children and as an introduction to a range of poetry. I will definitely be purchasing a copy.
Highly recommended!
