ON THIN ICE

Chitose and Kokoro start to take baby steps in adjusting from childhood friends to lovers, but their newfound relationship soon finds itself on thin ice. After the paparazzi catches model Liza Shibata leaving Kokoro's apartment, rumors begin spreading that the two of them are a couple. Chitose knows that the rumors are groundless, but still can't help but feel a pang of jealously. Meanwhile, Kokoro tries to show Chitose that he only has eyes for her, but for an otaku like Kokoro who doesn't know the first thing about romance, that may be easier said than done...

Still a passably amusing romance, though maybe it is spinning through the jealousy/insecurity cycle a little too much as the romantic leads keep having miscommunication issues and constantly misunderstand the other's actions.

Okay, I promise no skating or ice puns for this review. Maybe. Kokoro and Chitose are now a couple, which sounds great except that implies dating, which they certainly are not. While Kokoro learns to smile, Chitose learns to grit her teeth and deal with things. There’s also a lot of playing the fame game and all the fallout from that. Oh and skating is still happening.

A step up from last volume, although it’s still not performing as strong as the first couple volumes. We’re now trapped in the not-dating-dating phase that many a shojo has done, except now it’s adults in the workplace.

I think that’s part of the problem and one I alluded to last time. These two are adults who should have SOME leeway to make their decisions (there’s a dubious curse lurking in the background, but c’mon).

Giving them the same obstacles as a bunch of school kids kind of lessens the novelty of the setting. I get that it’s a statement on the pressures and responsibilities of a public figure, but it doesn’t change the result.

Another issue is Chitose’s crippling insecurity. That’s a story choice, so I’m not going to fault it, but even with Kokoro really into her she cannot bring herself to truly believe it. It’s going to be a truly earned moment if she turns that around.

The writing is a definite improvement in regards to the comedy. There are some damn good gags in this one - Chitose and Kokoro have a one-sided spat and the various ways that manifests are really funny. One skater returns and he is so hilariously blunt (would that they all had such notable personalities) that he pretty much steals every scene he shows up in.

Kokoro’s crazy manager also has some fine dialogue - she is one of the oddest characters I’ve seen and I love that she’s a bit of a lunatic but also understanding (when it suits her) and driven.

As expected, Kokoro’s dad kind of sucks. He gets a whole one page of dialogue and it’s more than enough to establish him as an utter bastard. I imagine he’ll take prominence as an antagonist going forward.

3 stars. I might even go to 3.5 if you pressed me, but no rounding up because this series has gone from really good to okay-but-not-exceptional. I don’t plan on dropping it, but it’s starting to fall for the traps it had originally been avoiding and it makes me less excited for new volumes than I was at the start.

Well, now I'm only here for Taiga.
And the insufferable cliffhangers that keep tricking me into reading the next volume.

Today’s post is on Knight of the Ice, Vol. 4 by Yayoi Ogawa. It is 176 pages long and is published by Kodansha Comics. The cover has Kokoro dressed in his new costume for his new program. As it is the fourth in the series you need to have read the first three volumes in the series to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this series. The intended reader is someone who likes sports and romance manga. The story is told from third person close of mostly Chitose. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- ON THIN ICE

Review- We are starting to get romance complications between Chitose and Kokoro, like his family wanting to marry him off to an heiress, still unknown, and a model who pretends to be his girlfriend to get into his apartment. His family is going to be a problem for them but how will Kokoro handle them? Does he love Chitose enough to not put up with their actions or is he going to be wishy-washy? I’m afraid that he is going to be wishy-washy but I could be wrong. That is pretty much all that happened in this volume with the addition of two cheek kisses but no other movement either plot or character. But a slow volume is not bad. I hope we get more plot development in the next volume.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

They reaaalllyyy amped up the angst in this one. I did find myself rolling my eyes at all the miscommunication because I hate miscommunication as a plot device. But overall, I still really enjoyed this volume and found myself laughing quite a bit. I even liked Moriyama a little bit in this volume and she's my least favorite character lol.
I'm excited to read volume 5. Hopefully Chitose and Kokoro will start being themselves and doing what they want instead of listening to what everyone else is telling them they should do.

Dropped - Sorry but this series is too angsty for me. It’s not a bad series and has it’s good qualities. It just has some parts/tropes that I can’t handle. (I mean that literally. Like I will squirm & throw myself over the couch, I can’t handle it.)
So if you like the insecurities & doubts for multiple volumes on end, keep trekking on my friend! More power to ya!
If you, like me, can’t handle the endless running around on the track, it might be a good idea to try a different manga.

Okay, I’m ready for a bit more mature character growth and true story progression. I did not feel much romance in this volume. And the 600+ days to the Olympics is a bit daunting if the lack of any actual behaving like adults and not middle school children doesn’t happen until then…. Even the ice skating scenes were lacking.

A solid entry, but not particularly memorable by itself. This felt like a lot of mid-series titles where story arcs are slowly progressing but not a lot of new stuff is happening.
I like the characters, so I enjoyed it, but I don’t expect to remember this volume specifically. It’s the broader story that is somewhat slowly taking shape that will stick.

I didn't like this as much simply for the girlfriend drama and what poor innocent Kokoro was doing to make Chitose jealous in a way to prove that she actually loved him if she got jealous. This speaks to his innocence and taking up terrible advice from another person.

Aw I get being shy in a new relationship but it feels so lackluster between Se and Kokoppe!!!! I wish they had more time to spend together… Instead, we get more misunderstandings and no communication…. NO THIS A JOSEI SERIES AND ADULTS SHOULD COMMUNICATE DAMMIT!!! *tears*

This is about Kokoro and Chitose. This had a little bit more development in their relationship, which I loved to see. These two are so cute. I just wish the story moved a little faster.

This volume definitely dragged. I love Moriyama with all my heart and soul, but am probably going to stop reading this series.

It feels like still it’s not fully commuting to the romance and it’s just a lot of miscommunication. I want more so I really feel it. But it’s not annoying to me at least.

This is a cute story but the leads hiding their feelings and the constant miscommunications, is getting a little old. The story is skewing toward younger teen.

Sound like a broken record, but I love this series. The humor lands for me and makes the series super entertaining. Overall, lots of laughter and cuteness.

With that said, Chitose's insecurities start getting the best of her, and she's pretty mean with Kokoro. But also, can't blame her because Kokoro is kind of a dumbass and had it coming for not considering her feelings. So overall, felt really bad for both of them (mostly for Chitose; if I was her, I'd be meaner). Honestly, I generally don't like lack of communication as a source of conflict. But this series balances out the drama with comedy and I am so biased towards it that I forgive it.

The ending had me scrambling to get my hands on volume 5, and also worth noting, I realize I'm getting invested in the side ice skater characters :)
