THE PLOT
Laura returned to her job and Morris and Wood after being gone for 6 months on maternity leave. When she returns, she noticed the temp she hired to cover for her while she was gone, Mia, was still in fact working there and has taken over Laura's job. Mia has her reasons for wanting a permanent at Morris and Wood, and Laura is dead set on figuring it out. Janie is the CEO's wife hiding secrets herself that she needs to make sure stay hidden no matter what cost. After someone from her past comes back 5 years later, her life is in turmoil and her secrets are threatened.
This book follows the 3 POV's of Laura, Mia, and Janie. One night after everyone had left the office, a call is made to 911 saying that Morris and Wood's building is on fire. With tensions stirring between these 3 women, someone has to be responsible for the building fire. We go through all POV's from the past up until the night of the fire to find out who actually set fire to the building and how all 3 of these women are connected.
MY THOUGHTS
I had a nice time reading this! It definitely wasn't a great book, but I had a fun time.
The Characters: The one thing I struggled with was the characters. I found Laura absolutely INSUFFERABLE. She was so selfish and self-centered. She just gave birth to a baby boy and went on to complain that her husband wasn't understanding her and her motives...it was all about Laura. Fucking spare me. 🙄 If I have to read, "Nate, you just don't understand me and my lifestyle," ONE MORE TIME I'm gonna lose it dude. Mia was sus from the very beginning, and as likable as she was trying to be portrayed, I didn't like her. She is the perfect picture of a "pick me" girl in every sense. Janie wasn't great either. She just loved stirring the pot and starting drama where it didn't concern her. It felt like I was reading a cat fight between high schoolers. I was not having a good time.😭
The plot: I felt like there was soooo much filler in this book. I don't ever know how I'd describe the genre. Was it a mystery? A thriller? We are informed in the beginning that someone was watching Janie; it was made apparent almost every time one of her POV's were there. However, we get to the end of the book and still...nothing? We never hear of it again. It felt like there were so many open-ended questions that we never get answers to. However, the plot was just engaging enough to want to keep reading. The ending? Very very predictable. I don't normally like coming up with theories just so I can enjoy the read more, but even I could see it coming from a mile away. Although, I liked the twists and secrets that were involved and explained.
The Writing: The writing was actually so easy to read. I found myself reading pretty fast and everything was written out and explained very well. The writing is simple and enjoyable and you could probably knock this out in a couple days like I did.
Overall, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a first or second choice, but it was enjoyable enough that if you end up picking this up, you'll probably enjoy it. I picked this up at random one day and I'm happy I did, despite there being moments and characters I didn't fully enjoy or like. As I stated before, I don't know how you'd officially describe this book, but in my opinion, it's somewhere between a thriller and a mystery. 🙂

Felt in the mood for a thriller/mystery, so I figured I'd read this since it's been on my shelf for a while!!
