I honestly have no clue why I'm giving this book 5 stars.
5 star means you absolutely loved it, which I did. 5 star means you would recommend this book to everyone that you know. Which I would, and I do.
The problem is that I can't put my finger on why I loved it so much.
I guess I'm just a complicated girl.
Let me begin by saying that the book description does not give the story justice. To sum it up, this book is about a serial killer who meets another serial killer. They and their relationship evolve.
I'm doing a reading challenge this year that I'm trying to read indies from the BOH (FB group) list.
If I had ever read the book description, I would have definitely passed on this book. It reads like a jumbled mess and too much information dumped at once. (my personal opinion).
For some reason, I'm fascinated with non-feeling characters trying to hide their psychopathic personality.
It's written in a very direct manner. There's no flowery prose trying to embellish details. The writer tells you, and that's that. Why did I enjoy it so much then? Many scenes were spent with the author basically telling you daily mundane activities. (EX- he got in his car and drove: he showered; etc)
I'm even left with many questions. A character hinted about she had a reason why she was drawn to her new lover, but I don't feel like that was fully explained, only vaguely. There are a few other minor things that I don't feel were truly resolved.
BUT I LOVED THIS STORY. I don't know why, but I stayed up too late, not sleeping, turning pages, until it was finished.
So yeah, there's that. I'm giving this book 5 stars because I enjoyed it so much. It's not extreme, that I usually love. The violence is mild. It was interesting and that's all I can tell ya.
Note to self. Google houndstooth jacket. I have no clue what that is but was mentioned many times.

Fluids is a fascinating and tumultuous read about a man named Lucas with dark impulses and many technical talents who meets a stormy and similarly homicidal woman named Mir. The relationship with Mir rattles the lifestyle Lucas has known, which has been driven by passions, rages and measured choices but without love and common emotional attachments. Lucas is both sophisticated and basic, able to maintain his professional reputation and genius at his job while his murderous urges simmer in his thoughts. Sometimes, he needs certain inspiration and motive to satisfy his brutal itches; other times, he’s triggered just by the sight of an ugly houndstooth jacket, which mocks him with its “pretention to create a fictitious chaos.” Mir is casual and impulsive when indulging her vicious cravings, which concerns the more deliberate and vigilant Lucas. Ben Clayton’s writing is deep and ornate and sensual, but also primal and sort of rapid and industrial in its detail, even during the killings, which are visceral (literally, at times) and artistic. The songs sprinkled in mention throughout are great plot-driving choices, an eclectic mix of music I like and could imagine hearing while I was reading, which adds to the story when you apply the lyrics to the scene. The connection between Mir and Lucas is always pulsating and electric (the red-lace lovemaking bit, whew). The emotions are reflected in the description of the characters’ drinks, intricate food choices and in the swoon of their intoxicated interactions. Somehow, I did not really question the morality and the fact that they were killing people; it was more about suspending that judgment and shock and experiencing what was underlying their behavior and how their feelings evolved. I highly recommend this quick, sexy and graphic read.
