I’m breathless! I have to say first and foremost – Transit of Angels is the best book, by far, that I’ve read this year! Outstanding, exquisite – mere words are not enough…

Transit of Angels opens to thirty-four-year-old Angelica – Angel – beside the hospital bed which houses her husband Bill. His beloved motorbike has betrayed him and although his chest is moving up and down, it’s the machines doing it for him. Angel doesn’t think she’ll survive without her beloved husband. Over a year of grief, of not knowing how to keep going, and only doing so because of her little dog Tashie, follows. When Angel’s twin sister Essie, who had remained a stalwart beside her for the duration, persuades her to visit Essie and her partner Lizzie in the valley beside the Hawkesbury River, Angel finally agrees.

Slowly Angel’s life changes as she moves forward, still, and always grieving. The move was reluctant but Tashie and Angel settle and find a modicum of peace. What would her future look like if she could envision it? Does Bill approve, agree with her choices?

Transit of Angels is Aussie author Desney King’s debut novel, and what a debut it is! Her writing is beautiful, the lyrical prose perfection. I was captivated by the story (starting through a film of tears) which continued in the same vein right to the perfect ending. Ms King’s painting of verbal pictures had me travelling along with Angel for the full journey, and I cannot recommend this novel, with its wonderful cover, highly enough. Magnificent!

With thanks to Desney King and Pilyara Press for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

This for me, was a slow burn, the type of book I don't usually experience. Angelica is in her mid thirties and loses her husband in tragic circumstances. She is very open to spirituality, and is seeking a sign to give her peace, peace to reconnect with the love of her life, and on the other hand, peace to move on with her life.

All descriptions in this book are beautiful and gentle, the lovely scenery that Angelica surrounds herself with at all times, to make her feel safe and secure, and more importantly, happy in her environment and where she calls home at any given moment.

Angel has a very close family, and leans on her twin sister strongly, and this bond gives her strength at all times, and she connects with many strong females as her journey progresses.

The voice of Angelica seems a little older than her age, and the use of such words as as darling for instance made me feel she was older than portrayed, but this is a personal observation and the types of thing that I will always notice; not all readers may feel like this. This book may not appeal to readers aren't overly interest in themes of spirituality, as this is a strong theme throughout. I felt for poor Angelica at times when those not overly close to her commented on a personal decision, but she was a strong character and able to hold her own. She was very stubborn, that's for sure!

I wasn't sure of one decision that didn't seem wise toward the end of the book, but she was able to lean on others who knew her the best, and this story is very centered on the sense of family. There was one portion of this family that didn't seem to have closure, but that may be for reasons of this part of the family's disconnect.

This is a gentle and well written book of connectedness, family and being at peace. The author's work in editing is noticeably strong. This novel is very vivid in a sense of home, belonging and connectedness.

Transit of Angels by Desney King. (2020).

Is there life after death?
Angelica is 34 when her beloved husband Bill is killed in a motorbike accident. She knows Bill is dead. Yet she yearns to be reunited with him. In desperation, she begs him for a sign. What happens next results in her leaving the city and moving to a quaint mudbrick cottage in a remote river valley where even the impossible seems sane. As Angelica delves further into mysterious realms she finds that not all is as it seems, and that grief - and life - have a way or carrying you forward, whether you like it or not.

It's not often I pick up a book and am in tears within a couple of chapters, but that's exactly what happened with this novel. From the very beginning, this story is an emotional tale that will hurt your heart at times. I thankfully have not experienced this kind of grief at this stage in my life, but the author has such a way with words that I believe she has successfully represented the utter despair one feels at losing a loved one, as well as how difficult moving forward with your life would be. Not being a religious person myself, I found Angel's spiritual journey quite fascinating and food for thought.
Overall: While this one is extremely sad at times, it's beautifully written and those with an open mind will find the spiritual aspects to it quite intriguing. This is a compelling debut for the author and I would happily recommend.

Just read this beautiful, beautiful book❣️

Sadly, I’ve not long finished this beautiful book…and I need a moment…maybe more.
Oh my heart! What an incredible read this was!

Angelica, or Angel as she is affectionately known, is thirty four years old and very much in love with her husband and soul mate, Bill.
They are happily settled into their lovely old home in an inner city suburb of Sydney, where they enjoy all the good things that life in the city has to offer, such as alfresco coffee and breakfasts, walking or commuting, the easy camaraderie and respect that is shared among neighbours and acquaintances living in close proximity to one another…
It’s the kind of life they have dreamed of sharing and are now enjoying the heady excitement of imagining, just how their future will look as a family in this ideal setting…

Until one morning when Bill goes out for a regular motorbike ride with his friends and is involved in a tragic accident. His bike hits a slippery patch on the road and sends him into an uncontrollable trajectory, resulting in him suffering horrific injuries and being rushed to hospital to be placed on life support.

This would surely be more than enough news to bring a soul undone, but Angel has no time to unravel as she is confronted with more shocking news and the need to make urgent decisions…she is inconsolable with grief as the burdens on her begin to mount, and the prospect of a life without her true love looms too large to contemplate.

Angel is bereft.
[As a reader, I am bereft! This writing is so incredibly touching, and heartrending as you share this scene with Angel]
Agonisingly grief stricken weeks turn into months, then a year, and Angel can’t seem to move from her despair, she cries and cries, and cries some more, not knowing when or how to get through her grief.
Even her beloved twin sister and her best friends are at a loss as to how they can help her through this insurmountable grief.

Angel begs Bill for a sign, beseeching the heavens for something to help her move on…and then one day she notices something…is it the sign she’s been begging for? Can it really be?
Angel’s life suddenly takes on another shift…one of many more…and she is reeling at the speed at which the universe can conspire to alter her direction once again, and so completely.

This amazing and credible story, is a spiritual journey which just grows and grows through beautifully descriptive and lyrical prose, painting vivid scenes for the reader to fully immerse themselves in…enabling this reader to feel [vicariously] involved in the whole experience.
I felt like I was also on a journey with these characters, sharing all the emotions along with them.
I didn’t want it to end and was truly sad to turn the final page…I miss them already.

This is a debut novel and I’m ruined! What do I read next? This is going to be a hard act to follow Desney King!
I can’t recommend it highly enough…for me it was just a pure delight to read, for all its emotional impact as well as its magical picture painting abilities.
I’m hugging it still! It is going onto my top shelf of best books ever!

Please read it!

This novel was exquisite in every way, the language and imagery drew me in and led me along on a beautiful journey, where the landscape and settings were as clear as if I were there myself. Desney King’s writing is like poetry and conveys so much depth.

This is far more than just a story of grief, I went into this novel knowing very little about it and I had no idea the journey I was about to be taken on or how deep this novel would prove to be.

My journey with Angel was a powerfully moving one, I didn’t want to break the connection, even wandering along the beach at a determinedly slow pace so that I could continue to read as I walked.

From the very start, this novel had me in tears and by the end, I’d been through every emotion I can think of. The tears came on and off completely unexpectedly at times and near the end, I felt I was about to have my heart ripped out again.

I loved Angel, as she dealt with her grief, and as she explored what happens to us after death, as she looked for signs and asked is there still a connection to our loved ones? I loved how she used art to help her heal, being an Art Therapist I know how powerful a tool this can be. And how she allowed the quaint mudbrick cottage on the river to help heal her.

So much of the spiritual nature of this novel spoke to me, many of the ideas that Angel learns about are the very things I’ve been searching for and dabbling in for nearly 20 years. Maybe this book is a message for me to take up the search again.

The cast of characters that help Angel through her loss were wonderful, all with their own painful pasts and secrets, all who have learnt or are still learning to move on with life. I especially loved Clyde, an older gentleman who becomes a friend and a great source for Angel to learn about the spiritual realm. There were also characters who weren’t so nice, who were judgemental and unsupportive, but even these people have lessons for Angel to learn.

This is a novel that will stay with me, and one that I will revisit again in the not distant future.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

My first comment is, for a debut novelist, the plot line was a brave choice, expertly executed and so engaging. I’d been hoping to find a book I could fall into and be carried along effortlessly; I wanted to journey somewhere beautiful.

Transit of Angels was perfect in every way.

In the opening pages we meet Angelica and quickly gain insight into her personal life and the enormity of her loss. There is a death—the sorrowful passing of a soul mate—but with Desney unflinching as a fiction writer, and with years of publishing industry experience, her sublime storytelling and passion for picturesque prose breathes so much life to Angelica’s journey.

Every book should be a journey—both for the character and the reader—and this is one I can highly recommend.

Angelica has so much resilience and resolve in the face of incomprehensible tragedy that her journey to recovery is both thought-provoking and uplifting. (These same adjectives best describe Desney King, whose life story as a multiple stroke survivor will make a powerful memoir (which I understand is underway. Can’t wait for that one).

If you have loved, if you have lost, if you are lost, Transit of Angels is a story for you. We can, in fact, all benefit from reading this one.

FYI - I have the pleasure of following Desney King on Facebook. Her ‘good morning’ photos are always uplifting and inspiring; simply a beautiful way to start the day.

Synchronicity brought Transit of Angels and local author Desney King to me. I believe this novel is for those ready to transform or already in the process. It is so real and so emotive you could be excused for thinking this novel an autobiography.

What is this transformation that I am referring to? It is the growth of understanding that we have for life. The letting go of control and appreciating that life is full of cycles of change through death, learning, rebirth and growth - sometimes these cycles are more obvious than others but we are always in a state of flux.

Desney takes us on this journey of change with Angelica (Angel). When Angel’s husband suddenly passes, she is thrust into a new reality. Not having experienced this trauma myself, I valued the insight into the grieving process that Angel provided. A greater empathy grew within me for the confusion, anger, needs and loss that death can leave a loved one experiencing. I was with Angel every step of the way. If you have experienced great loss, Transit of Angels may give solace.

When the universe provides Angel with a sign, Angel has the choice to pay attention or ignore it. We all have these choices in life. Listening to her intuition, she slowly, tentatively embarks on the slow process of recovery.

I loved experiencing Angel’s journey back to life with her. We are reminded constantly through the book that moving on does not mean forgetting. I found Angel’s feminine strength empowering and inspiring.

Angel learns to listen to her soul. She learns of the gifts of practices like meditation. The type of practice, teacher and appropriate time will reveal themselves when the student is ready.

When I recently messaged Desney to say how much I enjoyed this novel and how I touched I was by the story, she beautifully noted:

“I have always felt it will find the people who need it.”

If even the slightest bit of this review resonates with you or perhaps even peaks your interest, look up Transit of Angels as this may be the sign that this is the novel to help you take your next step in life.

Thank you Desney. We hope to have the privilege of reading more of your writing soon.

‘Transit of Angels’ takes a classic premise and then leads us off the beaten track into a realm where nature is imbued with magic, wisdom, and love. The reader is dropped into a tragedy at the very start: we meet Angelica who is about to lose her husband Bill after a motorcycle accident. The book follows Angelica’s journey as she tries to overcome this loss, grapples with grief, struggles back into life, heals, learns, and grows. She discovers a spiritual connection with nature and finds new beginnings. In terms of plot, ‘Transit of Angels’ is not very eventful, and it doesn’t have to be, since the actual development of the story happens within Angelica.
The novel’s greatest strength is Desney King’s language, which paints powerful images using simple words. Like the river that plays a central role in the novel, the language flows through the landscape of the story like a natural element with magical powers, mostly gently, clear and bright, but sometimes growing into a violent stream that tears with it everything in its way.
I truly appreciated the depiction of relationships between women in this novel. Not only can we find wlw representation in Angelica’s sister Essie and her partner Liz that feels natural and genuine, but female friendships and mutual support also play a central role in ‘Transit of Angels’.
The strong presence of spiritual themes in the second half of the novel might be a little alienating for some readers, but the way this is gradually integrated makes it feel like the logical continuation of what came before.
I would recommend this book anyone who enjoys character driven stories and/or modernist literature (especially Virginia Woolf or Katherine Mansfield), as it shares their focus on the exploration and interpretation of one’s inner life and its strong natural imagery and symbolism.

Desney King’s debut novel Transit of Angels is without question one of the best books I’ve read this year. It is impossible not to be moved by this beautifully crafted story about finding a way forward after devastating loss.

Angelica’s story gripped me from the opening lines and kept me fully immersed in her journey from the tragic death of her husband, to a place of acceptance, hope for the future, and a deeper understanding of herself and the mysteries of life.

King writes with compassion and insight about human relationships and her depiction of the natural environment has a lyrical quality that brings the story vividly to life in the reader’s mind.

I particularly enjoyed Angelica’s exploration of the spiritual aspects of life and her willingness to follow her heart’s lead into unknown territory in her quest for answers.

Transit of Angels is recommended for readers who enjoy intelligently written fiction that delves deeply into human relationships and our connection with the natural world.

The opening chapters are heart-breakingly real so a handy box of tissues is a must but Angelica’s story is by no means all darkness and despair. There is an abundance of light along the way and it ultimately delivers a message of hope and new beginnings.

Transit of Angels is Desney King’s debut novel, 12 years in the making, and what a debut it is!

Angelica (known as Angel) is 34 when she receives the phone call that will change her life, her beloved husband Bill has been involved in a single vehicle motor bike accident and is now in ICU. Her twin sister Estrellita (Essie) by her side she is forced to deal with the unimaginable, Bill’s injuries are so severe they are deemed incompatible with life. At this moment, in shock and with her heart breaking she must make the decision whether to honour Bill’s wish to be an organ donor.

King gently leads us through the process for getting consent from next of kin for donation as we meet Julianne, the hospital organ donor coordinator, the understanding that the next of kin is grieving and needs time to process what has happened and make a decision, while at the same time making it clear that time is of the essence. Struggling with her emotions Angel realises that having his organs donated is what Bill would want, he was so clear about his decision and not to honour that decision would be to deny who Bill was.

Anyone who has experienced the death, whether expected or not, of a loved one will recognise that strange feeling of disconnect with the world, how it seems remarkable that the world keeps turning, and people’s lives go on as before when for you everything has stopped. Many cultures have specific rituals around death which aim to honour the dead, while acknowledging and supporting the living, some cultures are better at this than others. Western society is often particularly bad at dealing with the whole death, dying and grieving process, as evidenced by our need to substitute words such as “lost”, “passed on” etc. for “death” in order to somehow soften the blow.

Transit of Angels seeks to acknowledge the grieving process, and how over a long period of time the pain lessens and becomes bearable, while acknowledging that it never totally goes away and there will always be triggers that bring it rushing back.

Depending on your belief system, some may find the concepts that King utilises as she follows Angel’s path of dealing with her beloved husband’s death confronting and different to their own understanding and belief in what happens after death. Whatever your religious views King explores the grieving process in a compassionate manner, as Angel comes to believe the butcher bird that miraculously appears in her garden is a sign from Bill that he is still there with her, cares for her and supports the things she is doing to move forward.

As events unfold, we watch Angel gaining a greater understanding of herself, her place in nature and natures place in her healing process. Interwoven into the tale is the sub tale of Angel’s twin sister Essie and her partner Liz who, while providing support to Angel throughout her grief, are dealing with their own relationship dramas and traumas. And, in an acknowledgement that you can’t always rely on family in your greatest hour of need, we also meet Angel and Essie’s younger sister Sage, who, having found religion, refuses to expose her children to Essie and Liz’s “house of sin” and totally disapproves of all of Angel’s actions in her recovery process.

Transit of Angels is a beautifully written book which tackles, what for many is a very difficult topic, without getting schmaltzy. Whether you believe that death is final, or that there is a heaven, or in reincarnation, or in life after death, providing you can suspend judgement on views that might not entirely accord with your own then you will both enjoy this book, and gain a great deal from it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written, thoughtful story, as well as anyone seeking to deal with their grief after the death of a loved one.

I received this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Transit of Angels by Desney King

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Transit of Angels by debut author Desney King is an elegant and compelling journey into one woman’s world at a time when it is crumbling before her very eyes…

When we meet Angel she is experiencing the greatest loss of her life. Her world begins to slip and buckle as we bear witness to her heart-wrenching anguish at the sudden death of her soul mate Bill.

King has written with a raw and open heart. This is brave storytelling at its finest. King’s writing skills are exemplary, her prose is lyrical and unflinching as she tells Angel’s story of profound grief in a way that only someone who has experienced a personal loss could.

But this is much more than a story about surviving the loss of a loved one. Angel takes us on a journey into a world of spiritual awakening and exploration in her desperate efforts to reconnect with her husband. This is where the story evolves — Angel discovers an alternative lifestyle after she takes up an offer from a wise new friend she meets in a valley along the Hawkesbury River while visiting her sister. It is in this quiet and tranquil valley that Angel is able to reinvent herself, tapping into her creative side and forming meaningful relationships within the local community. Here she is able to truly experience a previously unimagined version of life; one fuelled by nature and the earth itself.

King’s exquisite descriptions of the landscape create a sense of being at one with nature, allowing the reader to feel a connection to the river, earth and all the force and peace she bestows.

Transit of Angels is not plot driven, but rather a deep and spiritual journey of character exploration and growth. Angel’s story is fraught with pain and fear, but ultimately hope, gratitude, love and peace embraces her newfound life. She discovers that although she may always have questions about the possibilities of life after death, she has more love than she could have ever imagined as her guiding light back into the journey of life on earth.

Thank you Desney for sending us a copy to read and review.
The cycle of life moves us all in turn, we celebrate so much on our journey until we start to farewell loved ones.
Death is inevitable.
We all cope differently and the array of emotions will surface.
To lose a life long partner so young, before the chance of children, travel goals and all the experiences that shape relationships is devastating.
The void it creates, the chasm between loss and living life widens and the guilt when love and lust re appear.
Angelica is mourning and constantly looking for signs that her deceased husband is with her and approves of life choices.
A move from the city to a rural valley the antidote for self preservation and rebuilding momentum.
Living closer to her beloved sister she starts to meet locals and interesting folk in the area.
Consolidating her emotions and outlooks she moves forward.
Life is never straightforward and road bumps along the way keep her astute and unexpected events bring joy and anticipation.
Interesting family dynamics and a varied support system heighten the journey.
A well written and articulate story that delves into what we hope we will never live through, it presents facing your fears and reminds us that life is short and seize the goodness from it.
The relationship between the sisters was fascinating and I would be curious to see more of them as they forge through life.

A stunning story about overcoming grief and starting life afresh after the death of a spouse. Angel loses her beloved husband Bill in a sudden motorbike accident and after a year of grieving at home, she finally makes her way out of the darkness, moves to the country, and starts her new life. She rediscovers her love of art, finds a community, and explores spiritualism through meditation and connecting with the earth. I really enjoyed this story and it deals with the perils of grief very well. There is a great sense of community and friendship. Plus, a cute pup Tashie who is a constant support to Angel during the story.

I finished this spectacular story last night. I had no doubt that Desney's debut novel would be all kinds of fantastic, however I didn't expect to be taken on such a beautifully described journey with Angel (the main character). Honestly, I thought this book would be 'too spiritual' for me, as (I'll be the first to admit) I have no spiritual beliefs. I only say this as it could have been easy to write off the book before even starting- which would have be a huge mistake. Although spirituality is a constant theme throughout the story, Desney's gentle and compassionate storytelling is so multifaceted, there really is something for everyone. Her characters, and their existing and developing relationships with one another, are a treat to follow. Desney is a master of language. Her writing is so beautiful and vibrantly descriptive. She paints the perfect picture of every single scene, and this is what made me struggle to put the book down. Transit of Angels is a captivating story of love, loss, grief, acceptance, joy and finding peace. I loved it. Thank you Desney, for sharing your immense talent with us through this novel.

Make sure you dont start reading this on public transport or a cafe, the beginning is so emotive and heart breaking. You'll need a box of tissues.
Angelica loses the love of her life due to a tragic accident. Her life turned upside down not knowing how to go on until she puts a little faith in signs and feelings. A different approach to dealing with lifes challenges.
She uproots herself and goes on a quest to seek understanding, peace, a new resolve. And her fight to come back from grief was rewarded with a gift.
Quite the touching warm fuzzy kind of story. I really enjoyed reading it. Well worded and described to help readers see whats going on. Thanks to Desney King for a good read and Beauty and Lace for giving me the opportunity.

This story is a truly emotional, wrenching , transformational story that grabs you and doesn’t let go. It explores the depths of grief, difficult decisions and people, as well as the transverse beauty. Somehow, this story does all of that and yet is not a depressing book. This amazing book put me in that ‘awkward’ position a reader occasionally gets with a truly splendid book: you want to keep reading as it’s so good but, conversely, you don’t want to keep reading as you know that it’ll end.
I can’t wait for Desney King’s next novel!

Desney King’s book, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝘀, says the things 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙮. It is another experience that has me wondering if 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧. Rarely do I feel someone knows and understands the synergy of deep grief combined with the intense desire to truly live freely. Add the awareness of everything being energy, the transition of humans from being present in the flesh to in spirit, and the experience of a variety of brain states. This book will help with clarity on these and more. I didn’t want it to end! Highly recommended.

Wowser this book certainly takes you on a journey of Grief and enlightenment. Desney hits exactly on how grief makes you want to stay in your shell and be away from the world, how dare the world keep going on when you have lost so much. How so called Guru's can take advantage when you are in a vulnerable state is a shocking truth. Transit of Angels felt like a true biography more than just a fiction novel.

A powerful story

Transit of Angels is a beautifully written story of the human psyche and how it affects our relationships. The author writes deeply of difficult topics and she shows us how to cope, through the life of her main character, Angelica.
I absolutely loved her exploration of the connectedness of nature, it completely drew me in.
I was also completely drawn in with the ending; written with such intensity, I simply could not stop reading!

Transit of Angels by Desney King is an absolute masterpiece that will forever change the way you view life, loss, and what lies beyond. From the very first page, I was captivated by King's raw, emotional, and utterly beautiful prose. This isn't just a book; it's an experience, a journey that delves deep into the human spirit and offers a profound new perspective on existence itself.

There were moments, many of them, where the tears were flowing freely, but even through the blur, the pages kept turning. I simply couldn't put it down. King has an extraordinary ability to articulate the ineffable, to paint vivid pictures of grief, hope, and connection that resonate deep within your soul. It's a testament to her writing that even as my heart ached, my mind was simultaneously expanding, truly wandering into realms of contemplation I hadn't explored before.

This book doesn't offer simplistic answers, but rather, it invites you to ponder, to question, and to find comfort in the mysterious beauty of transition. "Transit of Angels" is a truly transformative read that will linger in your thoughts long after you've turned the final page. It's a gift, a beacon of light for anyone grappling with the great unknowns of life and beyond. Five stars simply aren't enough to convey the profound impact this book has had on me.

You could say that I loved this book, but that doesn’t come close to describing the story of Angel’s journey of healing through devastating loss. This book will carry the reader away to a rugged world of nature set in the hauntingly beautiful escarpments of Australia. The author’s talent for elegantly painting scenes with words made me read the way I would eat a box of gourmet chocolates, saving and savoring. Deliciously nurturing the imagination through fascinating structures of plot that entwine your heart and pull you in before you know what’s happened. As I turned the last page I felt such release and healing myself, having made the epic journey to soul with Angel, and knew an aspect of my own healing through surrogacy. I plan to give this book to all I know who live close to soul, it is so much more than an amazing story, it is a version of healing in itself.

I am lost for words with this book. I considered DNFing this at least once a chapter. After we got the front matter out of the way, which was handled with dignity and grace, we then moved onto apparently, everything is connected. Nothing was explained, there was no climax, no resolution, just endless descriptions about meditations and universe energy and lot of other things that I do not believe in.
