The Genius and the Tramp Fight Fascists in 1930's Hollywood
MIDNIGHT BURNING - September 2025 “Ingeniously pairs real-life friends Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin on a roller coaster ride to save America from a fascist threat within its borders.” – Jacqueline Winspear, author of the Maisie Dobbs series.
Award-winning author Paul Levine weaves historical figures into a gripping, true-to-life plot to overthrow the U.S. government in the sizzling thriller MIDNIGHT BURNING.
It's 1937 and clouds of war gather over Europe, and American fascists march at home. While the FBI chases suspected communists, Nazi agents plot an armed insurrection. When the world’s two most famous men–Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin–uncover the scheme, which includes the assassination of Hollywood’s biggest stars, they fight back with nothing but their ingenuity, raw courage, and the fierce resolve of Georgia Ann Robinson, LAPD’s first Black female officer.
Levine—praised by The New York Times for his “realistic, gritty, and fun” novels—delivers a breathtaking thriller laced with humor and a larger-than-life cast, including Charles Lindbergh, Douglas Fairbanks, William Randolph Hearst, and Joseph Goebbels.
"This could be Levine's masterpiece." - Lee Goldberg, New York Times #1 Bestselling Author

When his godson suffers a catastrophic injury in a high school football game, lawyer Jake Lassiter sues to abolish the sport and becomes Public Enemy Number One. The former NFL linebacker also battles CTE, the fatal brain disease caused by repetitive head injuries. His personal life, too, hits a rocky patch. He's in couple's therapy with fiancée Dr. Melissa Gold and vows to live long enough to fix his relationship and achieve justice for his godson.
"Grounded in reality, EARLY GRAVE is a novel with heartfelt emotion, flashes of humor, and high-octane excitement." - Franco Harris, NFL Hall of Fame Running Back
STILL GOING STRONG:
CHEATER’S GAME is a stand-alone entry in the Jake Lassiter series.
"Clever, funny and seriously on point when it comes to the inequities of society and the justice system, CHEATER'S GAME is top-notch stuff from Paul Levine. His Jake Lassiter is my kind of lawyer!" - Michael Connelly
“Fascinating, fully developed characters and smart, well-paced dialogue keep the pages turning. Levine manipulates the expectations of the reader as skillfully as Jake manipulates the expectations of the jury” —Publishers Weekly (★starred review★)
"Drop everything...Read it now...BUM DEAL is fantastic." - Lee Child
Almost illiterate Sophomoric and poorly written. Characters are not as impressive as Miss Piggy or Kermit. If this author sold a million books, America is doomed.
Jake is a busy lawyer. He knows his stuff, but knocked around to many times as a football player. That’s how he meets the new love of his life. You need to read the series to know more.
An entertaining book. One lawyer, found alone in a locked room with the corpse literally with a smoking gun and powder residue in his hand, in jail for murder, and two lawyers on the outside looking for the real murderer. That search takes us pretty much to the end of the book, and involves diamond smuggling, B-girls, the Russian Mafia, big bad men, some emotional angst. At the very end, the scene moves to the courtroom (this is promoted as a legal thriller), where the State and the FBI, caught in an embarrassing situation, drop the charges.
BUM LUCK
Not much law in this one, which is a smart howdedo on the evasion of justice and the use of dirty tricks to entrap two lawyers and indict them of offences just before one of them files papers for election, and before the other is arrested on charges of bribing a juror.
BUM DEAL
The OJ case recast with slight variations. Lord is defending an ex boyfriend, Solomon’s instincts warn him that something is off, while good old Jake is on the prosecuting side this time, with no body, no fingerprints, no sign that a murder was committed. When the big bucks talk, witnesses go missing, or on the stand, turn hostile. A good amount of medical information, romance and football, but not much courtroom action. And poetic justice at the end, what we love.
Very good legal stories with good characters and plot lines. All three books kept me reading at a rapid pace. Story endings did not disappoint. I enjoyed Paul Levine's writings enough that I want to read more of his books.
The series started slow. And kinda predictable. The third book in series picks up heat and even left me guessing where it was headed. If you enjoy Levine read the series.
Great powerful characters and their stories are strong. The writing was outstanding and kept me intrigued from the beginning to the end. I can't wait to read more!
This set was a good way to start following the book characters of Paul Levine and get a better idea of the twists he brings to the legal system. His references to football are great ties to the real world.
If you like murder and mayhem, you'll love this trifecta book series. Lassiter, Solomon and Lord will definitely keep you coming back. Each story had excitement to the very last page. This is a good read and it definitely delivers. Miami Law is that heat!
Enjoyed this book! Had a lot of unexpected suspense in it. I figured out the truth but had to read through to the end to find out for sure. I would read the series in order so you don’t miss anything.
I learned some things about concussion brain damage. I Like.. the characters. They were a good mix of personalities. Also liked the family interaction.
Interesting light reading. The three books are a little repetitive but have different storylines. I became tired of hearing about Jake's headaches, etc.
