The realization that we're finished with the Extinction Cycle series is a hard pill to swallow. In this post-apocalypic series, we've become friends with the characters, their enemies were our enemies. Let me tell you one thing about this series and this final book, it's been a non-stop roller coaster of good vs evil, monsters and jump scares to rival any motion picture. I highly recommend reading the 7 book series of Extinction Cycle. Then the 4 books of Extinction Cycle Dark Age. The thing is, you can read Dark Age without having to read the other series, but it's a whole lot more fun to read them all. The writing collaboration between Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony Melchiorri was a perfect blend of military defenses and science. Sadness that the series is finished, but what a ride it was!

While I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, this book really focused on the entrance to manhood for one of the main children in the story, I don’t know that the author intended for this, but the rest of the story seems to pale next to the young man Timothy Temper. Pressed against the wall, cornered into one last stand against the Variant Horde, the Allied States make one last stand to save humanity. Will team Ghost survive? Will mankind die behind their walls overrun with monsters of the New Gods?

Throughout this twist and spiraling story I did find myself consistently checking how much of the story was left as I began to sweat and think “they’re running out of time”. The book keeps a fast pace and moves right up until the last chapter. I was satisfied with the resolutions at the end and I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys war and tactical/military books. Its also a great read for zombie fans.

5 stars. A non-stop action- and horror-filled tale that will certainly go down as one of Smith's best*. However, do NOT read this book if you have a heart condition. Goodness knows, I think I developed one reading this final chapter of the Extinction Cycle.

The best part of this book - and really the overall, 4 1/2 star series - remains the humanity both good and bad that we become oh so involved with. Yes, the monsters are horrible but at their core, they, too, are just humans that have come to worship at an altar of hate, disease and false gods. This book is far too relevant for our current times and you can interpret a lot of what goes on here as a social statement to the degradation in decency modern-day America is facing.

But even with his penchant for making books that keep us involved with the characters - loving when they love, hating when they hate, weeping when they are sacrificed - this book must also be lauded for the way it handles the absolute unending and truly terrifying action that occurs. I personally cannot fathom how these people maintain their sanity let alone what they sacrifice physically. I know that Smith is a strong athlete - something we do not share - and I can only imagine that a lot of the 'push through it' aspects our heroes face are real-life interpretations of running that final mile uphill after swimming, cycling and goodness knows what else for hours on end. Even reading about it left me more than a little exhausted and filled with what can only be caused fantasy aches and pains.

*That all being said, I do wish that we had slowed down somewhat both to cover what was a stunning transformation to create the character of Azrael (eg the kind of depth we saw especially in "Trackers") as well as what can only be described as an equally hellish recovery for the survivors of not only the Allied States but humanity in general. Sometimes giving us more insight into the motivations and madness of the villain can be a 'good' thing and again, I wish Smith had used his skills at character development a little more on how this particular set of monsters came to be. I do know that was a particularly strong part of the previous series - see the story-lines that we experienced in Rome and the Vatican in terms of the radiation-fueled evolution of those true beasts. I just think a lot of potential was left by the way-side in this case. A lof of unexplored territory, I know, and perhaps left open to give the publishing crew something to explore in future chapters.

Still, you will not get a more adrenaline fueled rush than what you find in this set of books. Along with 'Hell Divers', 'Trackers', and the original 'Extinction' series, 'Extinction Cycle' will go down in my own list of truly entertaining reads! Bravo!

I feel in the end this story became very cliché. Dialog was unoriginal. Felt rushed. I still love all the characters, so I wanted to find out how it would end. But I did find myself wishing it was over already.

The apex of the series.

Things to know upfront: There is violence and adult language. This is the fourth book in the second season of the Extinction Cycle Universe. I recommend, if you haven't done so already, to read all the previous books beginning with Extinction Cycle book 1: Extinction Horizon and working your way through. You will learn all the things that the main characters have gone through and your overall enjoyment of this book should be enhanced.

With "all hands on deck", the Allied States is in a fight for their very existence from an enemy they never saw coming.

I was left breathless at times by all the events that occurred in this story. I could see it playing out in my mind's eye as if it were occurring on a big screen with talented actors playing the parts of their lives.

I voluntarily read a pre-published version of this book and loved it enough to purchase the book for my collection.

The end of an era: the Extinction Cycle closes

The final battles for survival are waged as we say farewell to some of the most unforgettable characters it has been my pleasure to experience. Team Ghost will continue to bring the pain to enemies, but none more terrifying than the Variants in all the forms they evolved into. I'm going to miss Beckham and Kate, Big Horn and the girls, Fitz and Rico and all the characters that have brought more than a few moments of reading pleasure and occasional gems of reading excellence.

The series ends with the same intensity as it began and has continued through every book. I'm sad! I really will miss this series!

Extinction Darkness (The Extinction Cycle: Dark Age Book 4) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony Melchiorri is AMAZING! Beckham, Horn, Kate and Team Ghost have fought for freedom from the monsters – both human and non-human and everything in between! The Prophet and his Scions are just one step away from annihilating the entire race of humans. That step seems to be mighty large … he must first beat Beckham, Horn, and Team Ghost. Bent on revenge, the Prophet wreaks havoc. Death comes to several characters in this last book, but they die with honor and dignity fighting for what they believe in. Will it be enough? I won’t spoil the story, but I will tell you, that I just finished the book not 15 minutes ago and I felt compelled to write this review while tears stream down my face!

As co-writers of this story, it is impossible for me to tell differences in the writing styles, they are blended so completely that the story is seamless. The characters (beloved ones and hated ones alike) are so well developed that the mention of their names will create a reaction.

The story is solidly written with nothing left to question except what comes next after all the carnage and death and … plot twists are excellently executed. The deaths are dealt with well and the new characters added to the story are impressive and the same care and attention to detail is present.

I will say that there were several times I sat in shock, not believing what I had just read … and disliking both authors to a small degree. Their skill in storytelling is vivid and engaging. Readers cannot help but be sucked into the story and react to the words and images they create. While I am sorry to see the series end, it finishes with a solid ending, no questions.

To Nicholas and Anthony … well done!

I finished the last of the Extinction Cycle books a couple of days ago and have been circling around this request for a review. I guess I'll just jump right in.
This is by far, one of the absolute BEST series of books I have ever read. I'm new to the zombie genre and I can't think of a better way to get here.
Smith and Melchiorri are incredibly skilled writers. They have a seamless way of integrating their plotting and ideas which makes for an incredible series.
When I read each of the original books and the four Extinction Cycle books, I can't tell you how often I would clutch my pearls and think, "Is humanity ever going to survive?!?!?". The odds were stacked so high against people that there were so many times that I almost lost hope.
Smith and Melchiorri had the courage to bring me to the precipice (and throw me over) many times as well as sacrifice some of my absolute favorite characters to the story. It is easy to write a HEA (happily ever after) book, however it is more difficult to write something that is more realistic, down to the ugly and gruesome ends that some of my favorites met.
I will say that I took a short break from the series and read one of my HEA's which calmed my nerves a bit. When I would return to Beckham, Big Horn, Dr Lovato, Timothy, Dohi, Fitz, President Ringgold, and my other friends, I was sucked right back into the excellent plot and never-ending action. I was taken to the battles on the sea, underground, in the air, and on land sometimes so close that I felt I could smell the variants.
I cannot recommend this entire series of books highly enough. Mr. Smith and Mr. Melchiorri, thanks for the helluva ride!

Canada and Mexico have finally contributed forces to the war. The SDF equipment has also made its way to the Allied States via Canada and will be forwarded to Outpost Houston. Captain Reed Beckham, along with his ever-present sidekick Big Horn, are tasked to escort duty with the equipment. Once again, Dr. Kate Lavado will be physically plugged into the red webbing to eavesdrop and redirect the Variants organic communication network. The Allied States were now down to twenty-three outposts. The capital to be moved again, this time to Puerto Rico of all places. Suggestions were being made to evacuate everyone from the States, potentially giving up on the war, but President Jan Ringold was not yet ready to yield. The Prophet is determined to destroy the Allied forces, especially Team Ghost that has given the Variants so much trouble. The Prophet unleashed a hellish double-edged trap and attack designed to end the resistance of the Allied States once and for all. The outcome may be the beginning of the end for one opponent.
I did say, “may be” didn’t I? It was Allied’s turn now, not only to consolidate and prepare defenses but to develop a counter-attack plan. With Allied’s new location a multi-phase plan was cobbled together to disrupt the Variants, improve defenses, and execute a covert attack. If Allied can survive the next attack and their plans succeed they may have a chance. That’s a lot of ifs.
Hold on! This may be the final battle!

While I knew the end was coming, I always hate when it arrives! When Extinction Darkness begins, we know what our friends are up too and the vast array of monsters, collaborators, and evil that they are up against but it gets worse. The Prophet is hell-bent on destroying the Allied States and enslaving anyone that won't join his mutated army of creatures. Who will survive and will they win?!

I found this book less violent than the rest of series and it had more of a not-totally-hopeless feel to it, which was welcome. There were definitely spots were I worried about the characters but all-in-all, most made it. I really enjoyed Corrin's character and felt it added a great POV to the story. The ending wrapped up the Cycle and the series in a concrete enough way that I feel satisfied with - there is an small opening that could lead to a new book, series, or spin-off which would be great. I won't spoil it though!

Thank you Nick and Tony for another excellent series in the Extinction Darkness and Allied States world! It's been such a pleasure reading these books and I look forward to another collaboration between the two of you.

I received an ARC from the authors for my honest and unbiased review of Extinction Darkness (Extinction Cycle Dark Age Book 4). I also purchased a copy from Amazon on the official release date.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith with Anthony J. Melchiorri, how much better can it get. It can't!!!!!!

My two top Authors ever and they definitely rock the world. Nicholas Sansbury Smith first of is my number 1 go to guy and Anthony J. Melchiorri are just awesome together. I really all so glad that they decided the a "Chimera" in to Team Ghost. And I hope the others, brought in are a Great Boost to saving the United States, then the world. These 2 guys seriouslyRock!!! I seriously love them both and I'm glad to call them friends. When these 2 names go on one book, you can bet it will be awesome.

One Anthony Melchiorri set "The Tides" towards the end he gets extra help from where he never expected it. So this full series, "Extenction Cycle Series with these 4" then with "The Tides, I'll be reading next. You seriously can't go wrong. I've pretty. Uch read all their books from both Authors, and what can I say, I LOVE THEM. When things happen and I'm down I go to these 2 Authors, as it's a major pick me up with my PTSD, even on my worse days. I will read these same books 2 or 3,times a year, they really help me. Plus I trust these 2 guys implicitly. Thank you both for helping me. Highly, highly recommend both of these Authors to everyone, they real.y are some awesome books. Ssgt Cynthia Terrones USMC

A real page turner, read all 4 books in two weeks.

So this is a review of all 4 books in the second Extinction Cycle. I enjoy Sansbury Smith's writing, it is fast paced, imaginative , and the characters are relatable.

We have what is left of humanity fighting a new and stronger threat from the Variants, people given a super soldier serum developed by the US government.

It didn't go well. The attempt at making a super soldier like Captain America resulted in slobbery mindless cannibals. I mean close but...

After the defeat in the first cycle the Variants didn't seem like a threat any longer. But they learned to tunnel with a new breed of Alpha variants, and human collaborators (there are always some) started creating super weapons, bat bombs, mutated dogs, chemical warfare all under the command of the formerly human variant known as the Prophet.

Oh and there are human /varient hybrids called Chimeras, uber variants that control the organic communication networks, and a small band standing between them and world domination : Team Ghost.

Good characters, some live, some die, some are never the same. Just like war.

So highly recommended, here's hoping for a 5th book. Or a third cycle. Or anything.

Read it.

OMG, what an amazing story!

The wages of war are intense in the final book in the Extinction Cycle!
From the opening page the reader is captured by this amazing plotline! This is the most intense and overwhelming book I have ever read. There are no respites, asTeam Ghost, Beckham and Horn and rest of the brave men and women struggle in a fight to the death against overwhelming odds! It's the penultimate confrontation between good and evil
The final showdown is incredible storytelling by Nickolas Sansbury Smith and Dr Anthony Mrlchiori! Extinction Darkness is an apt title because the monsters have vastly superior weapons, communications and numbers! The hopes for survival are growing dim!
The battle is breathtaking as death strikes from multiple directions! The scene is reminiscent of the battle at the Alamo, as an overwhelming force attacks the smaller forces of good! Their only outcome is death or victory!
The magnificent imagination of the authors and brilliantly penned this book should be recognized as a grand achievement! This is the best post-apocalyptic storyline I have ever read! I loved this book!

*Minor spoilers*

Such a great ending to a great series! I really got into the very believable characters and the world they live in. It's a gripping, entertaining story.
Four books of fighting and blood and gore and torture and flesh eating half-human monsters-- including many gag-inducing moments--and yet, suddenly the story took me completely by surprise by making me tear up during a very touching, emotional scene near the end of the book. I absolutely did not see that coming and it really made me love this story even more.
Yes, you can clearly see that in the end Beckham will fight the main bad guy, and it reminded me somewhat of my son's video games where you fight the minor bosses before you get to the big boss. The scene was not entirely predictable, however, and I loved how it turned out.

Non-stop action and heroic characters

A wonderfully envisioned world, with realistic characters and an action-packed story. If you think the book summary is the least bit interesting, do yourself a favor and read the free book, or listen to the free audiobook on Audible.

I flew thru the 4 stories and was so happy to find a series with great character development. Sure they can be cliche but that doesn’t mean you won’t root for them every step of the way. Too often in sci-fi I find the characters are flat bc the author dedicates too much time convincing you their world is realistic/believable. As a reader I know I might have to suspend belief if I’m going to buy into the story. But I find it impossible to truly lose myself in a story if the characters fail to hold my attention.

Great job by the author(s). I will check out their other works without a doubt.

What an explosive, fantastic conclusion to one of the best series I've read in a long time. The Extinction world has been around for a good few years now, and it was wonderful to see Melchiorri and Smith team up to write this sequel series to the original. And what a ride it has been.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to give us more of Fitz, Reed, Horn and all the other characters in this series, and for introducing us to some fabulous new ones. Cornelius, Corrin, Timothy and Azrael, to name a few. If you ever want to write more, I'll be ready to read more any day.

Outstanding!!

As with every other book written by Nicholas he has delivered once again. Intense, nail biting and so good you just don't want to put it down. Action from page one to the very end. A fitting end to the series IF it really is the end because we all know that NSS always seems to have something up his sleeve.

I give this book and series in general five stars because NSS has the uncanny ability to get you to fall in love with the characters as if they are your own family and friends. So much that you do not want the series to come to an end, ever.

Bitter sweet

I'm a little sad, while this book exceeded my expectations this is the last book in the series. I love love love this series and this book. Reed, Horn, Fitz, Kate and the kids will all be missed. It definitely brought me to tears in the end and not because this was the last book. As usual the author threw in some curve balls I didn't see coming! Great ending and overall a fantastic read!

Honestly, I am already missing the Extinction Cycle series, its well-developed characters and story lines. This last book is a palm-sweating suspense that is crammed full of action, sacrifice, heartbreaking loss and prodigiously difficult decisions. The collaboration between the two authors elevates the story to the next level, especially when it comes to the supporting medical science. Absolutely loved it!

Perfect ending!

This is the epic conclusion the the Extinction Cycle series. I have to say I hope that at some point we have yet another conclusion as I would love more of this story and to see where they all go next. As is this is a great ending though. Lots of action and tense moments. There is sadness and joy. There is an ending that satisfies, but still leaves plenty of world to explore. I love this series enough that I have re-read it more than once and my 13 year old son agrees with me. If you haven’t read this series you could start here, but I would highly recommend you start at the top. So much will mean more if you do and it’s definitely well worth it, this story is one that will stick with you.

light in the darkness

Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony J Melchiorri do a phenomenal job of making the evil more evil. The darkness is all consuming, but the heroes of this story never give in. Their mantra: All it takes is all you got, and the characters truly believe it. The action is as always, non-stop. The violence is cruel and horrific. I definitely recommend this series. You need not have read the first season to understand this part of the story.

WOW, WOW, WOW..there really aren't words that express how good this book was. Thank you Nicholas and Anthony for bringing us the Extinction Universe. Beckham, Kate, Ringgold, Horn, Rico, Fitz, Timothy, Dohi, Ruckley and of course Corrin are characters that bring this story to life on the pages Nick writes. The action never stops and the fight continues. Hopefully Nick will bring these characters back again so we know how they are doing in this new United Stares.

I love this series

I'm so sad to see this series end. But Darkness is a fitting end for the ECycle, as much as I hate to see it come to an end. Some characters I truly thought would love to see the end, sadly, did not. And some I thought would not surprised me and made it to the end. Heroes were made and villains fell in grand fashion in Darkness. Smith and Melchiorri weave an amazing tale that draws you in and leaves you wanting more.

Excellent Conclusion of an Outstanding Series 👏👏

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. The quality never wavered throughout. Storyline and character development was consistently top notch along with the attention to details. Action was plentiful and entertaining, but I was particularly taken with the realistic interaction between characters. I certainly hope that there will be a SEQUEL series focusing on the rebuilding of the Country.

Wonderful series that highlighted the best and worst of humanity

Thank you so much for letting our Lady President finally have her defining moment with Azrael.... As to whether you do a sequel, well if what's left of Team Ghost along with Kate, Javier, and Beckwith are moving into the White House you sure better get typing on that sequel and SOON! CONGRATS ON YET ANOTHER 6 STAR SERIES!

This was a guilty pleasure finish.
I get hooked by Nicholas Sansbury Smith - and when it's read by R.C. Bray, it's really easy for me to pop on that ol' Audible and listen while I drive. I do think by this point the story was getting a bit long, and we needed to end here (which we did).

The characters all return (who are still alive), and and it's a satisfying conclusion. We'll leave it there as to not spoil it. If you get the chance, listen to it on Audible, R.C. Bray is amazing.

Extinction Darkness is book 4 of this series. The suspense has continually increased. The characters are all well defined. I feel like I know them all personally. Science goes too far. Life and death along with freedom vs slavery are the stakes in this series.

Fast-paced and non stop action made all of these page turners. Stay up all night nooks. America has a fighting spirit that keeps on fighting no matter water. The narration was

Fantastic

This was my favorite so far! We know the characters and are invested in their battles and oh boy the story is excellent. Final battle between the humans and the New God's. "All it takes is all you got" was definitely well displayed in the book. Yes I would love to see more of these characters. The fight to take back the country would be an excellent series.
