An utterly mesmerising novel. Literary flair, breath-taking plot twists and psychological insights. You will be challenged to consider the corrupting consequences of racism on different communities and individuals alike. The Vanishing Half is one of those novels that comes around only rarely, to seize the imagination in a way that captivates its readers through its powerful use of raw emotion. It follows the story of identical twin sisters who run away from home at age 16 and then slowly work back to their point of origin, one as a single black parent and the other who has passed herself off as white and lives an entirely different life, with a white husband who knows nothing of her past. Such a beautiful story about family and identity, how it shapes us and what it means to reject important aspects about who we are. Brit Bennett did an amazing telling the story of the Vignes twins and their lives, definitely recommend reading because the imagery and the depth of the characters are just so incredible!
