The history of Western art music comes alive in this sweeping overview. Based on the definitive Grout/Palisca A History of Western Music, Concise History of Western Music offers a wealth of information in a convenient form accessible to all music lovers and features lush illustrations, music examples, and contemporary accounts from musicians through the ages.
I read this for school and I think it gave, like the title suggests, a concise, yet thorough overview of music history. I found the beginning chapters really fascinating, especially when it talked about how the early Greeks revered music and viewed it as one of the most important parts of their society. I had never learned that before and how I wish it were still like that today! I was really impressed how this textbook was able to make Gregorian chants and Organums and Motets digestible and comprehensive for me, which previous textbooks had been unable to do. Overall, really enjoyed reading this!
I have to say, this is probably the best textbook I've ever read. I loved the way it was organized.... it was very helpful and easy to reference. The appendix was very detailed, which was great for my open-book quizzes this semester. I enjoyed the text and the history, and I aced a class I had previously dreaded, hearing how challenging Music History could be.
