When Kylie walks into the gorgeous beach house, it’s a dream come true. She still can’t believe she talked her parents into letting her spend the weekend down the shore with her boyfriend, Liam, after prom. Kylie, Liam, and their friends have rented the most amazing party house—and it’s all theirs. Prom was awesome, but this is going to be even better.

Except there’s a little problem. A violent storm hits the beach and the power goes out—with no sign that it’s coming back anytime soon. Roughing it with candles and camping lanterns isn’t the vibe they were going for, but everyone wants to make the most of it. Until people start disappearing . . . and turning up dead. "He reached for me with blood-soaked hands. My scream scared even the storm into silence. The walls didn’t dare to shake. The thunder eased to a sputtering cough. Even the wind paused its whistle. Or maybe I was just that damn loud."

Okay, let me level with you all here. I went into this book expecting nothing. When I say nothing, I honestly with all of my heart mean nothing. Think shutting the light off and the room goes completely dark. That darkness of nothing is what I mean. I wasn't thinking that this was going to be a masterpiece that was going to shock and scar me or something that was going to change the horror genre forever. So I wasn't disappointed at all. That also doesn't mean that this was good.

Think I Know What You Did Last Summer but cheesier and very predictable.

The author didn't seem to try with this one. She tried to recreate a book written by R.L Stine and failed miserably. Nothing about this was serious but I did laugh my ass off. This was just plain ridiculous and hilarious. It really got to the point where you wanted to strangle all the characters because they only cared about having the picture-perfect prom and drinking to excess.

Let me tell you about the killer. You accidentally learn very early on who the killer is. It was super obvious and exhausting. Why can't the killer be someone with a crazy motive? Or someone who is just tired of being walked on? The explanation was so silly.

Prom House was one that put me to sleep. My rating is what it is because of how it made me laugh. But a tiny word of advice.... don't waste your time!

Kylie and her friends rent a large house in New Jersey for the weekend of their prom. After prom, they haven't been partying long when they discover one of their friends dead. They call the police, but once the police arrive, the body is gone. The police don't really believe them, and leave them to their own devices despite the fact a hurricane is on its way. (Yes, you read that right.) The hurricane arrives, the power goes out, and Kylie and her friends must try to survive the night with a possible killer in their midst.

If you're going to have 10 (yes, 10!) characters in a YA thriller, I expect more of a body count than what we get here. There's barely enough mayhem for this to even be considered a thriller. About 80% of it is simply Kylie and her friends arguing with each other and being real shits to each other. We keep getting told they're all friends, but nothing in what they say or the way they act would indicate this is the case. Why anyone would bother being friends with the likes of Hudson and Aubrey is completely beyond me. The characters were uniformly awful and I didn't care about what happened to any of them. And I didn't need to, because barely anything happened in this story.

As a murder mystery, it also falls flat because motives are completely thin on the ground. Sure, I could believe somebody murdering these kids because they're all intolerable snots, but one of the main aspects of any book of this kind is trying to pick out who the killer is and why they're doing it. Here, it is completely arbitrary. We know nothing about these characters or their pasts (except for some very basic fundamental parts). We don't even learn their surnames! It could have been anybody and their motive could have been anything. We don't get the motive until the climax, and of course, it's completely impossible to spot.

As I guess is typical for modern-day YA, there's a heavy focus on Kylie's infatuation with her boyfriend, Liam. She loooooves him and wants to be with him and he's just so hot and perfect, and they're having sex even after one of their "friends" has been killed. I was like, "Yep, Kylie, I know you think Liam is the bee's knees, but I'm reading a thriller here and you're really beginning to bore me!"

Plus, who hires a house on the beach when there's a possible hurricane forecast? Why on earth would police immediately dismiss a report of a murder? Why is a house on the beach so ill-equipped to handle a possible hurricane? Why the f*** don't these kids leave after the first murder BEFORE the hurricane arrives?

It was a quick read, which almost made me give it two stars, but then I remembered it was 80% bickering, 20% "I love Liam, he's so hot", and realised that this lacked anything I like to see in the mysteries or thrillers I read.

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children’s Underlined for this arc, which is...wild. I received this arc in exchange for an honest review, and I will post that review upon publication.

In the meantime...

This is billed as a mystery/thriller, but expect the opposite. If you enjoy Christopher Pike for the so bad it’s hilarious factor, you may get something similar out of this. I took many screenshots of outrageous writing here, and maybe you will, too. If the universe loves us, there is a Teen Creeps episode on this in our future. I would absolutely rec that but not so much this. Details to follow upon publication.

Two stars

_Prom House_ is billed as a mystery/thriller based on the focal point: murders at "prom house" (i.e. the apparently $10,000 per night beach house that the group of high schoolers rent for post-Prom activities. Relatable). After reading, the most mysterious part to me is how this is getting published.

What I DO appreciate about this work is its vintage Christopher Pike this-isn't-supposed-to-be-funny-but-will-still-make-you-laugh plot points, character development, and language. It pains me to not be able to quote from arcs because there are some real zingers throughout.

Although the language is highly entertaining for the wrong reasons, the characters are not. Most are flat. There is an attempt to make the main character more layered by randomly highlighting her previous trauma, but it's too little and too late and feels quite forced and in some ways exploitative. One other character-related situation of concern cropped up a few times. Two characters have parents who enter into a romantic relationship and ultimately move in together. The children of these adults are also maybe or maybe not (discussed further in the novel and not spoiled here) in a sexual relationship. I found it so odd that this was considered just a normal occurrence that could be happening. These characters are entering into a potential sibling-style relationship. Is one possibly abusing the other? Does ANYONE think this is worth mentioning or discussing? These characters are complete fools, so I it's not shocking that they don't go far into this issue, but the author and/or editors might have put some more consideration into the possible implications here. I worry for readers who will see this representation without further conversation.

My central concern is that I had no interest in these characters living. They are wildly privileged (forget the $10,000 per night - wait until you see their whiteness in play with the police), and they are flat and unlikeable. There were times I rooted for the killer, and I don't think that was the goal.

Please, Teen Creeps podcast. I need you to make an episode on this book.

If you enjoy full circle so-bad-it's-good YA, you *may* enjoy this. Otherwise, RSVP your regrets to this post-prom event.

The blurb and cover of Chelsea Muller's Prom House are what drew me into the book. Sadly, the expectations I had for a dark/twisted prom-night-murder-spree were squashed pretty early on. It isn't often that I DNF a book, but between the ridiculous dialogue and even more ridiculous 911 dispatcher response to a murder, I didn't make it 1/3 of the way through this book.

Prom House wasn't scary, it was far from entertaining, and it definitely wasn't for me.

The saddest thing about this book is it could have been good. It's a neat concept but was poorly executed. The main character is only interested in getting laid by her boyfriend even after finding a dead body and most of the book is this group of kids arguing over who could have murdered who. The author tried to make this into some kind of mystery, but by the big reveal I actually didnt even care anymore. The main character is so all over the place with her emotions and accusing people of murder I kind of felt like I had gotten wip lash by the end. This story is written like a teenager is talking so there are sentences that are constructed as such and it's very off putting. I'm only giving this a 2 stars because I thought the concept was interesting. Had the author thought to lay out the story in a different way, make the teenagers far less into sleeping with each other and not used her choice of sentence construction it might have been good.

Sadly this was not it. I was really hoping to enjoy this story and was excited about this thriller/horror book and the biggest problem I had with the book was that it was neither horror nor thrilling.

When you think about some friends going to celebrate Prom to this beautiful isolated house only to be hunted down and killed one by one...you kind of expect more horror and thrills...at least some tension or something.

Unfortunately early on you realize this is more of a teenage drama, some love stories and a lot of talk about your typical teenager worries. Nothing wrong with that but it was not what I expected based on how this book has been advertised.

Even if this could be taken as a mystery thriller, there was zero suspense and the constant talk trying to figure out who the killer was going character by character got so boring and annoying. That was just not how you build up suspense and let the reader try to figure out who is killing them. Hard pass for me

I love a good YA thriller and this one had all the things! I loved the idea of murder at a prom after party (where the alcohol is flowing and quite a few hookups...sounds like the prom after parties I attended, minus the murder, of course). I especially loved that Ms. mueller kept me guessing till the end (about who was going to be murdered and the identity of the murderer). Highly recommend!

[Prom House] is a fun, twisty, fast-paced YA thriller that combines teen angst, romance, and complicated relationships...with the added drama of a murderer on the loose. I bought the book for my friend's boyfriend’s daughter’s 15th birthday and ended up reading it before wrapping it up. It only takes a few hours of time. The story brought back memories of all those high hopes and the times of not being sure what you should or could do with your life...but above all else you just wanted some memory-making fun even if it’s just for a weekend. This book captures all those emotions and delivers the high school drama in spades. The only thing I saw that probably won’t made any difference what-so-ever to a 12–16-year-old... was that there was no build up to turn the characters into “flesh” in our minds and not just words on paper. We never really got to know them so it was hard to really care about them. Overall...a fairly good read for a few hours of reminiscing.

Kylie and her friends have rented a gorgeous beach house so they can party as much and as loudly as they'd like after prom. Unfortunately, not long after they start their partying, Kylie and her friend Aubrey discover Cam, Aubrey's boyfriend, dead. Kylie is convinced that he was murdered and that his murderer could still be somewhere nearby. When the cops arrive, however, Cam's body is gone, and Kylie and the others can't convince them that it isn't a prank.

Now the cops are gone, and everybody's stuck in the house as a violent storm hits and takes down a nearby power line. When yet another person in their group winds up dead, it seems more and more likely that whoever killed Cam is still among them. Can they find the killer before whoever it is claims more victims?

While reading this, I was strongly reminded of the movie Bodies Bodies Bodies, although that movie was a lot slicker and had more fun moments. Kylie and her friends weren't exactly likeable, although it was hard to even properly dislike them since readers were told so little about most of them, just A is sleeping with B and whatnot.

I feel like this might have been a more enjoyable book if it had embraced its slasher aspects more, but the body count was surprisingly low considering how quickly the paranoia and distrust ramped up. For the most part, this book and its characters were just dull and vaguely annoying.

Prom House by, Chelsea Mueller is a fast-paced YA thriller with a classic slasher-movie vibe. The story follows a group of teens who rent a beach house for their prom weekend, only to find themselves trapped inside with a killer. One by one, people start dying, and trust quickly erodes as the remaining survivors try to figure out who’s behind the murders.

The book moves quickly, with short chapters that keep the tension high. The isolated setting and stormy weather add to the claustrophobic horror. If you enjoy mystery-driven horror with a "who's the killer?" element, this delivers.

It has shallow character development. Some might find the characters a bit underdeveloped, making it hard to get attached to them. Making "love" during a friend being murdered was out of the ordinary.

It leans heavily on familiar horror-thriller clichés, which could be enjoyable for fans of the genre but might feel repetitive to seasoned readers.

If you like quick, popcorn-style horror with slasher and mystery elements, Prom House is a fun, fast read. It’s not the deepest or most original thriller, but it delivers on suspense and entertainment.

Trigger warnings: death of a friend, murder, natural disaster, graphic descriptions of dead bodies, cheating, domestic violence, child abuse (in the past)

2.5 stars

The blurb of this gave me strong And Then There Were None vibes, and I was absolutely here for it. Unfortunately, this was mostly...dull and strangely lacking in tension. Like, you're trapped in a house during a huge storm. The house is flooding. Your friends are being murdered. The murderer is clearly one of you. You'd think it would be PACKED with tension and creepy vibes. But instead, it felt like there was more concern for their various romances and interpersonal relationships than there was for the fact that people were DYING and they had no way to communicate with the outside world.

Also this is going to be nitpicky, but they're in the house for...two nights? I think??...and I don't remember anyone eating. Not once. Drinking, yes. Eating? NOPE. And it felt weird.

I had a lot of the same issues with this book as I did with There’s Someone Inside Your House- the lack of tension, the teen drama getting a lot of time, the hints of backstory drama of the main character that I genuinely could not care less about. Despite a strong start (first dead body shows up SUPER early), this book petered out real fast and was just incredibly predictable and formulaic.

Oh, this book is bad. I'm not sure if I would have thought it so bad it's enjoyable if not for it hitting one of my least favorite fictional problems: the author completely fumbles tropical storms/hurricanes.

Pretty sure this is supposed to take place in June but I can't tell if I imagined that. If not, it's in May. In any case, it's stupidly early in the hurricane season and yet there's a tropical storm off the coast of the Jersey Shore where our doomed party is taking place.

This is definitely a beach house, btw, and yet not for a moment do the cops, called to the house about a dead body, try to get these stupid teenagers out of the beach house or mention the evacuation orders.

Also, no one worries at all about storm surge, or staying away from all the windows, even after a street sign hits one and nearly takes it out.

All of this I could maybe ignore if not for two things:
A) Kylie says she's been through a lot of tropical storms and has some knowledge about them... but never demonstrates any proof of that.
B) Our early season hurricane? Is Winston. WINSTON. They're named alphabetically, so this? This is just lazy writing, editing, and just so, so dumb.

Finally, I didn't care about this group or even one of them enough to actively root for anyone. Not even the killer.

On the plus side, it was easy to read aside from mentally screaming, "That's not how that works!" more than is healthy.

me the entire time reading this book: 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑

this was so boring. 90% of the time the characters were arguing about the same thing over and over again. i lost count how many times they said, “we need to stick together.” also, main character is just so stupid. i was rolling my eyes every time she speaks.

i have so many questions: 1. why didn’t they leave the house the first time one of them died? 2. how can the police just leave the crime scene in a huff? 3. last but not the least, where are these kids’ parents??? like, your child is at a prom house and there’s a hurricane coming. shouldn’t you go out there and collect their asses? 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyways, i should’ve dnf’d this.

all imma say is the killer was so predictable but the book was still really good. I knocked off points tho for how dumb Kylie was in trying to figure out who the killer was bc she had good tactics and points. BUT GIRL WAS LITERALLY BASICALLY PICKING OUT HOW THIS ONE PERSON WAS SO OBVIOUSLY THE KILLER BUT THEN NOT SUSPECTING THEM??? I just wanted to reach into the book and shake her 😭

This book is really a 4.75 star. I started this book early in the morning (12:45) and had less than 40 pages left when I fell asleep (2:30) with this book laying across my chest so I wouldn't lose my page. I woke up this morning (9:50) and picked the book right back up again. I finished it way faster than I thought (10:15) because the acknowledgements were longer than I thought they were. I loved the story of this book. 10 kids go to a rented party-house after senior prom. But a storm happens, people can't leave the house, and then they go missing. When they're found, they're found dead. Since no one can leave or enter the house because of the storm, the group of friends realize that the murderer is inside the house. I wasn't really shocked by the plot twist because there were only 3 people out of the living friends that I knew for a fact WEREN'T the murderer. I was expecting it to be any other people. I've been putting off reading this book since July, and I have no clue why because it was sooooo good. I'm in a really bad slump right now and I feel like this book was just one thing I needed to get out of it. Also, I love Liam (our MC's bf). He's always there for Kelsie (our MC) even when she suspects him to be the murderer. He lets her just sit and talk to him, he knows what scares her and tries to protect her from it. He also puts complete faith in her that she will figure out who has murdered their friends. Chelsea didn't write him to be one of those swoon worthy guys that are most peoples love interest, and I think that's why I like him so much, he's real. I can actually find a guy like him. And I love that so much.

Please please please read this book. It's short and simple if you just need a quick palette cleanser.
10/10

It was a really easy read and throughout the entire thing I was interested it was kinda cringy at maybe 2 scenes but it didn’t make it bad. At the end I had a slight inkling as to who was behind everything but I was still pleasantly surprised it didn’t give me this huge reaction but the book as a whole was good and it all gave closure and I liked the messages and it was enjoyable to entire time which is why it’s a 4 and not a 3 no more detail. I was annoyed at Kylie some of the times like little things but I was so confused as to why she was making out with her bf in the bathroom when they just found their friend dead like huh Bahaha but the fact Noah was walking by with Cam dead! 😬 I’m so scared to have new friends now it really put into perspective things and makes you think how well do yk ur friends and how everyone would be if something did actually happen. I liked how a lot of it seemed realistic and how ppl would be to a degree I was so shocked how Noah was acting at the end like full blown psycho and it could happen to anyone which makes it scarier and better of a book he just made me feel so uncomfy when he was calling Dani his little object yikesss I think I might just be dumb but throughout the book I had no idea who it was until the last bit I kept switching between so many ppl which I live in a mystery crime book. I wish we had more depth into Rory and Hollie being drugged and stuff like what was that about why? I would sooo fast when things started to pick up again and I loved that a lot of ppl didn’t like and it has low ratings but I thoroughly enjoyed it easy read, intriguing, full circle/ closure.

Prom night by Chelsea Mueller is a YA murder mystery book. It has all the hallmarks, suspicious deaths, being locked down in a house during a storm and adults who don't believe the kids.

While reading this, I felt that it had the same easy read as the old point horrors. It doesn't skip ahead, we take this journey with the characters step by step. It's pace is quite slow though.

It's definitely for young adults. There is not a whole lot of character development but I suppose if there was we would be able to pick up on who did it right away. It has some themes about finishing school and going to college and early relationships.

That characters were generally likeable. I did get sick of them not answering questions straight. Kylie was interesting, after the first murder she kind of viewed herself as the one to take control and keep her friend safe.

All in all, a good quick read for young adults looking to try out the mystery/thriller genre.

What should have been the best weekend of their lives… became the worst in this exciting and paranoia-filled book!

In this book we follow a girl, Kylie, who is looking forward to a fun night with drinks, music, and more to close a year of school and to celebrate going to college. There are 8 of her friends and one tag-along who apparently almost no one likes. The weekend was supposed to be terrific… but ended up with death, near-drowning, and a storm. Not a weekend to forget.. just not for the good reasons.

I absolutely LOVED that very early in the book we get our first murder. Haha, I so didn’t expect that to happen, I thought for sure that he was just pranking them, because I am so used to horror books starting late with murder/gore. But he was truly dead!

I loved that there was a storm as well, I do love a good book about storms and murder. About people stuck in one place… nowhere to go… nowhere to run. I did think it was odd that no one evacuated them or even tried doing that (but we are not alone as we learn in the end). The storm started off pretty OK, but quickly became something of a beast. Water rising, wind blowing, stuff flying around.

I did love Kylie and Liam together. I have to say, given the book, I was definitely on my toes whenever Liam did something suspicious. I just kept hoping that he wouldn’t be the one because I just loved the romance and the fire between Kylie and Liam.

BUT I had expected more murder, more gore, and more scariness. Things did happen, oh yes, they did. But it was mostly paranoia that happened as the storm continued to rage around the house. As things got more harrowing. I have to say as soon as I found out that we probably wouldn’t get many more murders, I settled in for all the paranoia and loved it all. It was great to see how the characters got more and more defensive or more secretive as the story continued and our MC kept asking the questions. And she wasn’t going for a no. I had fun trying to figure out, along with Kylie, who was the killer and who was next.

The ending felt a bit rushed in my eyes. We are just a few pages away from the book ending and I was still not sure who was the culprit (though I had some thoughts) nor how this would end. Then a lot of things happen in one go and while it was exciting.. I would have liked it to be a bit less rushed. A bit more natural, instead of how it felt now like OH, we are already through the pages, quick, let’s end this one.

All in all though, even with the rushedness of the ending, and the little murder/gore, I flew through this book and I couldn’t put it down.

What happens when a group of friends rent out a fancy house to have a party after prom? If you didn’t say murder, you’d be wrong! Dead wrong!!

Within the first couple of chapters, someone’s been stabbed in the neck while his ex-girlfriend is left screaming and sobbing on broken glass next to a pool. They obviously don’t have their phones, because they’re in bikinis and there is a KILLER!!! Where would they keep their cellphones anyway?!

This gives 90’s (almost slasher) horror movie, which I loved. I was convinced I knew who the bad guy was for the majority of the book, but I’m happy to say… I changed my mind towards the end and was right the second time around. 🤣

not worth it. i almost didn't even finish, it's very badly written. it's pretty obvious who the killer is fairly quickly into the story (at least, you can narrow it down to one of two people for the most part) and the main character is way too obsessed with her boyfriend. forgetting your friend just died because you want to kiss your boyfriend? yeah no

the main character is also very self centered. she kept talking about how she felt like she needed to take charge and then going "well how come i'm doing all the work around here to figure this out". poorly written characters for the most part.

What should be a normal prom party ends with people dying. There is a murderer on the loose. I recommend you not to read this scary whodunnit story at night! Prom House is an easy read starring the young Kylie, who has to figure out what’s going on. Chelsea Mueller has a descriptive writing style which gives a realistic vibe to the story. I definitely recommend this YA thriller!
