First to Lie

Rate this book
I’m living the dream. My comic book shop supports me and my ailing mother, and I have a chance to buy the strip mall it's in. For only a dollar. That is until my dear friend and landlord dies before the sale, leaving the place to his estranged son who plans to shut my store down and sell the building.

If only I can confront my new landlord and convince him how much the place means to me, and how much it meant to his father. But he’s ignoring my calls and my emails, so I take it one step farther and track him down in his nightclub. I should’ve done my research first.

***

I inherited all my dad's assets and ambition, but none of his gullibility. Some young thing tried scamming him out of a place worth millions and she thinks she can fool me. So imagine my surprise when I hit on an insanely hot woman at my nightclub and learn she's the persistent comic book shop owner I’ve been avoiding.

She stopped in to find me, but has no idea who I really am. It's time to teach her a lesson. Using a fake name, I get close to her. The only problem is, I want to keep getting closer and to do that I have to keep lying.

First to Lie is a full-length standalone novel in the Unraveled series. It was previously published as Unmistaken Identity in the now obsolete Fanboys series.

I really liked everything about this story. It was easy to read and very sexy! It was intriguing because you didn’t really know when the other shoe would drop, as they say. Most of the storyline is clouded with a lie but you still can’t help but root for them. There’s a vibe of emotion that runs throughout the story as well and sometimes it’s up and sometimes it’s down, but always well blended. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series soon!

3.5 stars even though hero lied and deceived the h from the start up until 80% of the book I really enjoyed and liked the hero but then he shows his true colour and acted like a real asshole throws insult at her.

What the hero did is unforgivable!! he flew her on his private jet to insult her teach her a lesson or something and drop her off somewhere abandoned her in the middle of the freaking night to go home alone by herself! She didn’t have purse or anything with her. What he said to her That was low on so many level.

The way he treated her and accusation are hell no no Leave his ass. Not once or twice he just keep on insulting her, calling her names, judging her character especially after spending time and knowing her personally being a ultimate jerk is not ok and she keep trying to explain him she’s a good person is annoying stop he isn’t worth it!

he made her life miserable because of his selfishness then finally show up at her house. Everything is forgiven and forgotten just like that. Seriously no grovelling!! No begging!! nothing!! He’s rich and has a magic dick so it’s ok!!

Oh Boy! Im so glad I let Intuition make my book choice this time. The cover was so cheesy and I didn't even like the guy on the cover🤫.

But I was pleasantly surprised. Tight knit story with absolutely great H and h. I really liked how Mara stood up for her self against the rich and powerful Wes. Good for her and I wish other writers take a leaf out of this book to make their gals spunky and self respecting.

Highly recommended. 👍👍👍👍👍

This is the first book in the Unraveled Series and is a great enemy to lovers' romance. This is a full-length romance that's guaranteed to steam up your Kindle. Mara and Wes will take you on one heck of a roller coaster ride. This book is overflowing with emotion, angst, passion, and chemistry. Wes was convinced that Mara tried to con his late father out of an expensive piece of real estate. To find out the truth he went undercover as Sam. Plenty of drama and emotion as they sift through lots of family secrets. The book is hard to put down once you begin. The characters are multi-faceted and likable. A HEA and no cliffhanger. I read a free copy via Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

First to Lie is the first book in the Unraveled Series. This is an enemies to lovers romance featuring Mara and Wes. Mara is a kind-hearted woman trying to save her comic book shop. Wes is a jilted billionaire convinced that Mara is a gold-digger.

Wes pretends to be someone else to figure out how Mara scammed his father. As they spend time together, Wes realized that Mara has nothing to hide. Wes and Mara have sizzling chemistry and as unplanned feelings develop and truths come out, will they last?

This book was an emotional, angsty, funny, steamy story. There’s well rounded characters and an interesting plot dealing with an alleged betrayal. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

4 stars

I loved how this book started. It was unusual, off the beat of what I usually read. This story keeps you interested all the way through the book and had a few secrets on the way. The characters Mara and Wes are very unique and I loved the pairing. Mara has had a rough life. Her mom has MS and she is taking care of her, her business has to shut down because the owner's son has given her 45 days to move out because he is demolishing the place that she has her comic business. Mara is spunky and I love how she is this down to earth person. I liked Mara from the beginning. What she stands for, what she is going through, so when she decides to go to Wes's bar to plead her case, I was all in. Wes has made a name for himself. He is ruthless in business. When his father died he decided to demolish the one thing he thought he loved more than him. So when this woman walks in asking for him in his club, he decides to see what she is really about. But what he does is hide his real identity to see what Mara really meant to his father. What happens is a roller coaster of lies, truths and secrets. They are going to have decipher between them all to get the complete truth before it is too late. Even though Wes is ruthless at his job, he does have a heart. When he is with Mara he is a different person, but when you have all the wrong things pulling you, you can't can't figure out who is telling the truth, the that is hwere the problem is.

These two will have a lot to work through before everything will show its true colors. So many lies will be told, that you won't be sure what believe, but I have to you, you will love every minute of it. I just have to say that this is the first time reading this author and I can't wait to read something else.

This author made a great book. It is unique and it keeps you reading till the end. I loved how it was written and the story line was unique.

I LOVED Unmistaken Identity so much that I'm starting out my review with some whining.....I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END! Mara Baranski is responsible young woman, who hasn't been dealt the easiest hand in life, but instead of laying down and giving up, she's started her own business, so now she's living a superhero fan girl's dream with her comic book shop. And she's made it work well enough to support her, and her sick mother. But when her landlord, and dear friend, passes away, his son takes over, and evicts the businesses on the property. Mara keeps trying to talk to him, but he's doing his best to evade her. Wesley inherited all of his father's assets, even though his father had abandoned him when his parents divorced, which has left him bitter. Now he wants revenge on the woman who scammed his father, and will go to any lengths to get it, even pretending to be someone he's not, to get close to her. What he didn't count on, was the connection that was developing between them, so will he drop the revenge or go on to the bitter end? OMG! As I sit here in my Wonder Woman clothes, all I can think is how much of a girl crush I have on Mara, and where can I find some of her superhero leggings. Which means that I had her back 100%, and wanted to junk punch Wesley so many times for being such a douche, that I'm still jacked up. Marie Johnston talented writing style shined through this original story that I was instantly captivated in, to where I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough. Even though Wes was a jerk, their chemistry shot sparks everywhere with sexy times hot enough to almost short circuit my kindle. And I loved the cast of entertaining secondaries, as they were sweet, and made me laugh as well. So I'm super excited about this new series, and will be waiting impatiently for the next book! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Cute and very sexy!!

Marie Johnston gives her readers a little bit of everything in Unmistaken Identity. Something for the comic lovers, the angst lovers and steamy sex scenes to top it all off. This was a nice cross between a millionaire/nerd romance.

From the blurb, we know Wes is hiding his identity hoping to trap the b-word that used his father for his money. Mara has called Wes's office many, many times looking to speak with him, so he knows he's got her right where he wants her. What he doesn't know, is that she's one smoking hot, down to earth chick that he finds himself instantly attracted to. So, let the games begin!

The power struggle between Mara and Wes was comical at times. It reminded me of a bumbling sitcom from the 80's, where everybody is in on the scheme except the two that actually matter. All the slip ups not caught from either side were funny. However, it wasn't funny when Wes realized what a huge mistake he'd actually made.

I liked these characters right off the bat. Wes was a villain with a heart he tries to hide and Mara was just a super cool chick with a rough past that she didn't let bring her down. Instead she learned from her mistakes, possibly to her own detriment now. It was intriguing to see Wes change from chapter to chapter, all the while knowing good things must come to an end.

The book is well written and balanced the serious, humor and sexy well. Nothing gratuitous, it meshed nicely and all I kept hoping was for these two crazy kids to find a way to make things work. We also get a short epilogue to see what Wes and Mara are doing in the future.

Unmistaken Identity
By: Marie Johnston
I was asked by the author or publisher to give an honest review of this book.
I give this one 5 tiaras:

I really enjoyed this book, it’s a book about a corporate man taking on a young Sci-Fi comic book owner and trying to figure out how she could have been so close to his father. He wasn’t close, didn’t have a good relationship with his father, and doesn’t understand how she could have. Everything she does makes him think that she is adorable, cute, and sexy.. but he fights it off arguing with himself. He tells himself that she is coercing everyone with her wildly ways and that she has to be putting out to make things go her way all of the time.
Wes has always been rich, a great business owner, and the most eligible bachelor. Everyone always wants him for what he has and/or what he can do for them. He doesn’t believe that someone could possibly not just want him for him, so for a young girl to just be friends with his father just doesn’t register in his world.
Mara is a young business owner with a past that she tries to keep in that past, a mother she has to take care of, and she is losing the comic store that she loves the most in the world. The son of her best friend Sam is taking her livelihood. Sam died before he could sign the paperwork giving her the strip mall for a dollar so she could own her store outright and be able to take care of her mother.
When the two meet… sparks fly and not always in a good way.

Mara owns a comic book shop, until one day she finds out that she doesn't. Her kind, elderly landlord died and his greedy son took over. What's she going to do? She has 45 days to clear out the comic book store and find new arrangements. At her low point, she goes in search of Sam's son, only to find someone else. She's still going to lose her comic book shop, but maybe she has a shot at love. Mara feels herself slipping more and more under his grasp. When the truth comes out can she handle it, will it break her heart?

Wes can't figure out why his dad would sell Mara the strip mall for $1. She must have been a fling. What other reason could there be? When Wes meets Mara, he says his name is Sam. He wants to know how she conned his dad. Then things escalate and he can't stop thinking about Mara. Could they have just been friends like she stated all along? He decides to dig deeper into Mara's past and things don't add up. When push comes to show, Mara doesn't back down. And Wes is ready for the fight.

This is a cute story. The only issue I had was about her past. If she had the means for certain things and invested wisely, she'd be fine, even with her sickly mom. Her past seemed sketchy to me. That was the only downfall of this book.

'UNMISTAKEN IDENTITY' by Marie Johnston is Book One in the "Fanboys" series.
This is the first book I have read by Ms. Johnston but I will say I have found a new author! This is a bad boy millionaire story with a hard working normal women. Mara was friends with Wesley father and had worked out a deal to buy the shop from him. But after he died Wesley isn't going along with the deal and thinks Mara was scamming his father. When Mara goes to confront Wesley after he sent a notice of eviction. Mara goes to his night club to try and surprise meet him. Wesley plays on the fact that Mara doesn't know who he is and pretends to be someone else to try to close in on her being a Gold Digger. But what happens with the truth comes out.
Really enjoyable read!

It started with reading a small blurb on this book and I was immediately sucked in. Maybe it was because the main character was a little outside the norm, I'm not sure, but I'm super glad I got a chance to read this book. The storyline is one that has been similar to some others I've read but this author had a way of pulling you into you completely lost track of time and didn't do all the things you should been doing instead of reading! Lol. Still, even though the book was good, I was left feeling a little down afterwards because of the hurt Mara endured even after she chose the higher road. She is a strong character that many of us would hope we could be when faced with hurt and a bleak outlook. I loved that. It was refreshing that her knee jerk reaction wasn't to hurt back. It surprised me that she didn't keep Wes in the doghouse longer though because he deserved it! Still, this was a great book and worth the read!
I volunteered to review a free copy of this book.

Excellent contemporary millionaire romance. I enjoyed this book because the readers got a lot of good background information on the main characters so we therefore understand their choices in life. Wes is bitter towards his deceased father. When he finds out expensive property was to be sold by his father for $1.00 he decides to investigate the woman who was to get it, Mara. Upon meeting Wes chooses to go by the name Sam, which happened to be his father's name. Mara works hard to keep her comic book store going while taking care of her disabled mother. Wes is convinced that Mara must be a gold-digger that was using his father. There are a lot of emotional swings in this story. Wes got close to Mara under false pretenses and name. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading more books by this author and am hoping for another book to be made in this series.

Marie is definitely brilliant and she has proven it yet again. One of the things I love most about her books is her willingness to colour outside the lines when creating her wonderful characters and boy does it pay off. Mara, Wes and all of the supporting characters of the book are a refreshing blend of witty, fun charismatic and relatable personalities. The story pulls at your heart strings and although you desperately want them to get their happy ending you absolutely don’t want the book to come to an end. The sex is steamy and not at all over the top, the light and happy parts of the book effortlessly bring joy to your heart and the more serious aspects leave you wishing you could reach in and help them. Definitely one click worthy.

I was asked by the author for an honest review.

I would have like to give Unmistaken Identity 4.5 stars. It had an interesting plot and enough complexity to not be entirely predictable. I liked how strong the character of Mara was. The comic/video game references were interesting to someone who knows the marvel/dc characters from the movies (so not an actual fanboy like the characters in the book). I don't think I've ever read an actual comic book.

I also like that it was set in Minneapolis (where I currently live), even though the only places I recognized in the book were city names and the Pfister hotel in Milwaukee.

What is with the ending?

How do I leave a review without spoilers? Yeah, I can't with this book. I thought I loved this book, even with Sam's/Wes' horrible words to Mara, I knew the apology would come and the make upset would be amazing. So this guy spews horrible things but when it comes to apologizing it is a simple I was wrong, I am sorry. SERIOUSLY? This author would like us to believe that he can use up paragraphs putting her down but one sentence makes the apology. This completely ruined the book. The way it was written it's like the apology was an afterthought.

I was given this as an ARC and I loved it!

Wes started off with the wrong impression about Mara and eventually came around and then Mara got the wrong idea about Wes. But that was his fault. lol

It's a passionate story about two people who should be together but because of Wes's dad, there are a lot of things that need straightening out. They finally work it out, but there a bit of angst in there... both for the characters and for the reader. lol

I enjoyed this story. It definitely had some love/hate emotions going on for me. Mara was such a sweet character, & Wes, well that's where all the love/hate comes in! LOL I was sucked into the story, couldn't put it down. I even had a few tears in places. The flow was good, I didn't see much for mistakes. The plot was a bit of a stretch since I couldn't see some of the things being plausible, but in spite of that it was still an enjoyable read.

Whose conning who??

All Mara wants to do is keep her comic book store open. All Wes wants to do is tear down the strip mall to build condos. A "chance" meeting at Wes's club and he thinks he has her all figured out. Wes thinks that she is a con artist out to get his father's money and property. When Mara finds out that her new live interest is really the man that is putting her out of business. Well... She's just going to con him. But really? Who can con the heart?

Not my Cup of Tea 3.5*
I much preferred the second half of this book to the first. Wes was a more likeable character and there was more substance to the story. The first half just seemed to be all about sex and Wes concealing his true identity. I’m not surprised that Mara was hurt when she found out but couldn’t understand why she didn’t immediately call him on his behaviour; it made her seem almost as underhanded as him. Felt the book blurb was better than the story itself.

Cute book

I thought this book was cute, as comic books and Comic Con are not my cup of tea. Mara is adorable, doing everything she can to care for her mom. Wesley is a lost soul, not understanding why his father stopped spending time with him. Two unlikely people to ever get together, eventually meet.
