The Hidden Power of Speaking in Tongues again explores this spiritual experience powerfully prevalent in the early church. This much maligned and controversial gift was a practical part of their worship and intercession and seeks to be rediscovered in our day.
The subject of speaking in tongues has created all kinds of issues and phenomenon in the Christian world in particular, and in our society in general. Some say it's baby-talk or gibberish, others say it's of the devil, others say it's a prayer language given by the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, and others say it is a gift given by God only to be used in a public church setting and only if the message brought verbally by someone speaking in tongues is interpreted in English so everyone can benefit. Another perspective that some churches have is that the necessity for speaking in other tongues ceased when the last Apostle died and the ancient church formed, or when the Bible was written which replaced tongues as a method God used to communicate with His people. Chavda does teach thoroughly about speaking in tongues in this book; in fact, it's the most thorough presentation I've ever read. For anyone who is interested in the topic, it's a great book to read. Whether a skeptic, a seeker, or a believer, the book will definitely provoke a lot of thinking. It's well-written and it's a pretty fast read unless something really stops you and you have to think about it. I highly recommend the book.
Chavda makes an excellent scripturally based argument for the gift of tongues. I do wish there had been more "how to" instead of "why you should", but I guess that there is a valid reason for that. The gifts of the HS are so individual that it is hard to relay to to someone else how to engage them!
This book is a wonderful reminder of the power of speaking in tongues...I agree that the Holy Spirit comes as a package and we cannot just choose one part of the package, say, prophecy, and leave the rest..As a believer,I want to make right choices, hear God clearly, receive His instructions, walk daily with Him,live an extraordinary life on earth, and having the Holy Spirit in me,plus speaking in tongues helps me get to that level....
This book is for you,who has lots of questions in regards to this wonderful gift of speaking in tongues.
I liked The Hidden Power of Prayer and Fasting much more than this. This one seemed to repeat some of the same Paul scriptures chapter after chapter with slightly different (but not really) explanations and the need for speaking in tongues. This book might have been better if the repeated stuff was trimmed (although the book would have been less than 1/2 the length). Also note this is obviously a very charismatic book, and only worthwhile if your charismatic yourself and doesn't get into any theology.
I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. It's a really good read on the Holy Spirit and his movement, but I wish he focused more on the gift of speaking in tongues. It really should be titled differently, something about the Holy Spirit. He then could of added a couple chapters on the power of speaking in tongues.
This book was confirmation of the Word I have been reading, hearing from my Pastors, and feeling in my spirit. An appetizer for the continuing feast before me in satisfying my hunger for the will of God in my life.
