John J. Newman combines over forty years of genealogical experience with his position as Director , Information Management Services, Indiana Supreme Court. The author is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and holds a master's degree in American History from Indiana University. After teaching on the high school level for seven years, he joined the staff of the Indiana State Library in 1970. That fall he was appointed Indiana State Archivist, a position he held until transferring to the Indiana Supreme Court in 1986."-- from back cover of American Naturalization Records, 1790-1990.
While definitely not a page-turner (what textbook is?), the layout and execution of all the essential topics in US history is quite impressive. As much as possible Newman cuts straight to the point, and much has been added to the overall narrative to include women, native Americans, African Americans, and other minorities. There's a lot of great analytical tasks and tons of primary source activities. Never thought I would say this about a textbook, but I was actually impressed.
The general text was of good use for framing the content of the exam but the extra stimulus was generally not useful. As for it being just a regular book for understanding US history it was lackluster in its whole representation of the US but the swathes it did cover were done well.
