Over the Faery Hill
(A Magical Midlife Misadventure #1)
by Jennifer L. Hart
This is a fun book about a down and out gal that meets a carry prince who offers her a chance to go back in time to change things she didn't like. She can go back three times. In exchange, he will ask for a favor. She agrees and chaos ensues. Its a great story with excellent characters and it made me think about my life. If I went back, how messed up would I make mine trying to fix mistakes.
I was never bored listening to this book. Great ending!

What is Paranormal Women's Fiction anyway? It’s Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Supernatural Cozy Mystery, and Women’s Fiction all tossed into the crock pot together until the flavors blend and harmonize into something amazing and new.

It's a tale as old as time, muffin-topping out of its skinny jeans and needing an extra cup of coffee to make it through the day. It's a woman who loves the hell out of her family but craves adventure and romance and all the fixings.

For me, it was a reason to get out of bed in the morning after my beloved beagle died. Sharing Joey and Robin's story gave me something to look forward to. It was a way to tell a story about and for a group of people who are often taken for granted, women over the age of 40, a group I now belong to. The mom who is expected to be chef, chauffeur, to make doctor's appointments while scrubbing the toilet all without a thank you.

It's my way to add a touch of magic into the ordinary and a dose of badly needed fun into the world.

Everyone has been faced with the question "what if...?" In this gorgeous fantasy book, Jennifer L. Hart gets to the heart of the matter. The story is not only convincing through its humour and fantasy, but also shows an unexpected depth of self-criticism and self-acceptance. With her charming writing style, the author quickly drew me into the story.

Joey Whitmore knows the day that changed her life. When the charismatic fae prince Robin offers her a chance to change her past, the temptation is great - but everything has it's price.
The tension was build-up very fast and I was very curious which decisions Joey will make and what effects they'll have.
Even if the romance is less important, the reader finds a great tension between Robin and Joey. Personally, I liked the interpersonal relationships a lot - friendships and enmities or family ties - Jennifer L. Hart has succeeded in building a realistic picture. I loved the little wisdoms at the beginning of every chapter.
Overall, a very well written book that made me laugh and made think about my own past - I can't wait for the sequel.
"The Fae Side of Forty" is the second part of this series and has already been published. I hope the audio book will follow soon.
The narrator Jacqueline Rendell is an excellent cast. Her interpretation of the individual characters is very successful.

What if you could pinpoint the one moment in your life where everything went wrong? Would you go back and fix it even knowing that it could change everything? That’s the bargain laid out to Joey. Over forty, overweight, she’s been fired from yet another dead-end job and nothing to show for her life except a busted wrist from a car accident in her teens that ruined her life. She was on her way to the Olympics as a gymnast, but that accident took everything from her. When she encounters Robin Goodfellow (yes, that Robin Goodfellow), she has the chance to change everything with only an open-ended favor given to the fae prince.

Joey is one of those characters that just can’t see her own worth. In her mind, the thing that she was meant to do—the Olympics—defined everything for her. That’s where her life was supposed to go and all of her passion is. Without that, she’s adrift with no purpose. When sexy trickster Robin comes along and tells her she can be her own fairy godmother, well why not use that to set the timeline right? Only, as she’ll find out, the grass isn’t always greener. Her path of self-discovery takes her to some interesting places with some interesting characters.

And boy, I loved those characters! Her feminist mother that she feels disapproves of her, but really, like any mother, wants to see her find her spark again. Her Grammy B with her witticisms like “If it has tires or testicles, it’s going to give you problems.” Her supportive best friend Darcy showing up for Wine Wednesdays and Margarita Mondays was an extra treat. Then there is Robin, who is just too handsome for his own good.

Over the Faery Hill was a joy to read. Filled with great characters, funny moments, and cheeky dialogue, this is a great addition to the paranormal women’s fiction genre. I can’t wait to read The Fae Side of Forty and see how Robin’s last words play out!

I give Over the Faery Hill 4 out of 5 propellers

Over the faery hill was funny and delightful... Robin Goodfellow what an awesome character, and Darcy the quintessential best friend along with Grandma B who I loved and then we come to tumbling Joey who took a really different route to finding herself and in the end she realised the most important thing, that she was already right there the whole time she just needed to learn to love exactly who she was bum wrist and all.

I FLEW🪽 through this in a day! So cute.

🧚🏼 This one is for my southern charm midlife women that have a good sense of humor, a love of fairies.

🤔 Have you ever had regrets in life that were so big that you would do anything to go back in time and change it? What if you had an opportunity to do so, would you take it?

👑 She’s 40, southern and a former athlete who had her life forever altered by 1 horrible night. She’s been holding onto a lot of hate and regret for years and is finding it difficult to let go and move on. She comes across a fae prince that grants her a wish to go back in time, but as you know that always comes with a price.

🔥There is some chemistry with the fae prince, and the story has a very happy ending, showing character growth and enlightenment.

🎧 Listened on audio while repotting all my plants, and time flew right by! A cute little book, not too deep, but still entertaining and overall great message about how easy it is to hold ourselves hostage to our past.

I've only recently discovered the Paranormal Women's Fiction genre, and as a 43yo woman, I'm really enjoying heroines my own age going on paranormal adventures. However, I am discovering that the tropes run strong in the genre as a whole. The books seem to be more similar than different, regardless of the author. Of those I've read, they all seem to start with a dissolved marriage and broke, despondent, sexually dissatisfied heroines, who all seem to be fairly similar in personality. Hell, I've just read two in a row where she drove a VW Bug.

I don't think it's so much that anyone is copying anyone else, but rather that those entering into the new genre step into an arena in which they feel there are very strong expectations from readers. No one yet seems to be brave enough to venture farther from the established and accepted characteristics. (I'm hoping this phase passes soon.)

I could have said all that on any of the reviews I've written for PWF books so far. But, as a reader, I had to get far enough into the genre to recognize the repetitions. And I can't disparage any one book for it and not the others. But I also can't ignore that these book are starting to feel very formulaic, including Over the Faery Hill (though I do think Hart tried to be a little different by including a trans ex instead of an evil or cheating ex.)

Having said all that, I have found that some authors do better with the middle-aged heroine than others. Hart's wasn't the best. I liked Joey, but she didn't feel 40+ at all. This is also the second PWF book in a row that I've read where the heroine being middle-aged felt like window dressing slapped on so that the book could fit in the PWF genre.

Joey spent the whole book trying to correct a mistake made her freshman year of high school. I'm sorry, but I don't care if she's over-weight, 40+ years old, and complains about saggy boobs. If an author gives me a heroine whose most important life events happened at 15 and reads as if she hasn't had a further 25 years of life, I'm going to say she doesn't actually feel middle-aged. Especially if she also doesn't have any of the markers of middle life—no children, no career, no established hobbies, no favorite isle in the grocery store, whatever. If she still (or again) lives with her parents, in a life centered around her mom, dad, and grandma, and is more concerned with what happened at 15 years-old than 35, she can't possibly really feel middle-aged. She feels mid-twenties, maybe. And thus, while the book might be a fine paranormal adventure, it's not much of a Paranormal Women's Fiction book.

But, as I said, I did like Joey. I enjoyed her snark and her love for her family. I liked Robin too, thought I can't say I felt the romance develop in any true fashion. All in all, I'd be happy to read more of Hart's book.

Joey Whitmore is over 40, a bit overweight and - again - without a job. She is divorced and has a mountain of regret after a car accident as a teenager. That car accident changed her life, for after injuring her wrist she could never compete as a gymnast again. And Joey is convinced her life has turned out wrong after that.

Enter Robin Goodfellow, who reveals to Joey he is a faery prince and can give her what she wants (a chance to go back in time to change the past) in exchange for a favor.

Will Joey take her chance to change October 3, 1996? What will she have to give up for this? Will she be happy with the results? And what about Robin? Why did he seek out Joey?

Another very original and warm story from this author. I really felt for Joey as she is such a real person with all the doubts and regrets we all sometimes have. And would we all not wish for a chance to be back in the past - even for a little while - to see life as it was then and the people you love(d)?

I really can't wait for the next in this series! Robin is such an intriguing character and I want to know what Joey is up to next! Loved it.

*** I want to thank the author for this early copy. This is my honest and voluntary review and I have ordered my own digital copy for when it hits the digital shelves. ***

Who hasn’t wanted to go back in time and change one choice in their life? Joey Whitmore, once Olympic gymnast hopeful, has hit middle age and hates everything about her life. If only she could go back and change her life. She knows exactly when she needs to go. Then a far shows up offering her just this opportunity for the bargain of an unnamed favor done for him later.

Common sense holds out for awhile but temptation grabs her.

I really liked the rules connected to this form of time travel. They felt more realistic than the typical story of going back in time. Also, I was not disappointed when Joey does experience the reality of trying to change things.

The only part that bugged me was how naïve she seemed about the impact of her mucking with time. There were quite a few issues I felt she should have anticipated. Even so, the story is entertaining.

I think the premise of the book was good. I enjoyed seeing a main character who was not the young perfect person , but rather a middle aged somewhat frumpy woman. The story itself was fun if a little predictable and the moral seemed to be , be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. I was also quite surprised that the "romantic element" that seems to be present in this genre was very tame and not a huge part of the story. It does sound as if this might be more of a thing in upcoming novels in the series. Overall a fun urban fantasy.

Imaginative Timetravel PLUS Great Characters

What an imaginatively created story! The quality of the writing is a joy to discover on Kindle Unlimited in the Women’s Paranormal genre. I loved the concept, the story line and the characters. The way that Joey manages to out maneuver the handsome fae at his own bargain was a brilliant plot twist. Well done, I Can’t wait to read the next adventure in the series.

Good storyline

While I liked most of the characters and storyline, an area that was significantly problematic for me was the deadmaming and misgendering of one of the characters. I understand the pov is first person and from the main character who knew that character pretransition, but it really was disconcerting and interfered with my enjoyment of the story.

I loved this one. This was funny, tragic, seriously deep and just a really good book. Maybe I'm feeling my age ( and sharing to much) but a birthday is coming up and this hits home in a way. Could you imagine having the power to change your life? Who would you be and would it be better or worse? Would you make a deal with the Fae to find out?

This book deserves an Olympic gold medal!

What a fun and entertaining book! One of the best books I’ve read in a while - and I’ve read some great books! Which means this deserves 100 stars, not just a mere 5. I was won over within pages. Completely, totally won over. I found myself excited by the story and smiling a lot.

There are bad books. There are okay books. There are good books. There are great books. And then there are exceptional books that stand out for all the right reasons. That stand out because you just want to dance in your seat with excitement. This is that kind of book. So exciting! Well written too. I don’t even know exactly what made this book so outstanding, but I guess that everything I love just came together in a perfect way: the writing style, the lighthearted tone, the relatable main character Joey (short for Josephine), the exciting plot, the fun element, the magic, the mindbogglingly amazing twists and turns. That all mixed together worked like a charm. And this author just gained a new fan, a huge fan!

And at the end all I could think was W.O.W. WHAT A RIDE! Un.Put.Downable.

Just so you know: this book is not completely ‘clean’. I know some readers would want to know that. Some cussing, some funny innuendos.

“Yet the part no one talked about was the discarded life that he or she had outgrown and slithered away from like an old snakeskin.” This wording about transpeople made me uneasy. It’s like the author, by likening them to snakes, evoked older imagery about snakes being dark creatures, not to be trusted, evil. And that connotation is just yuck. Also, all the woe in the MC’s life seem to be because her husband is now a “glamorous” woman. And though the premise on the blurb sounded good, this intro just didn’t sit right with me. DNF 5 % in.

I really tried to enjoy this book. The idea of the plot was fun, if not predictable, but still could have been a cozy read. There are anti-lgbtq and sexist undertones, and obvious body-shaming parts that were difficult to get through.

Reviewed at Paranormal-y Romantic

Over the Faery Hill begins the Magical Midlife Misadventures series with a fascinating concept – if you could change one event in your life, would you and could you handle the changes that would result by altering the timeline of not only yourself but others in your life as well.

I think we’ve all wanted a “do-over”, sometimes just wishful thinking other times an almost desperate longing. Joey falls into the second category. She is convinced that one event prevented her from going to the Olympics and by not fulfilling that dream her life has been one curse of bad luck every day since that one fateful day. She’s about to get her wish… and will discover that it’s not all she thought it would be, it’s far, far more complicated and complex than she could have ever imagined.

Joey is about to meet Robin Goodfellow. A fae prince, a trickster, and the answer to her desperate wish – or is he? Robin has an agenda of his own (all tricksters do) and as Joey gets what she believed she wanted lives will be changed… even Robin’s.

Over the Faery Hill is full of laugh-out-loud moments, deep life-long friendship, zany family members, and magic. It won’t take long before you’re wrapped up in the quest for Joey’s wish to come true and the chaos that results. I had such fun with this story – and some thoughtful moments as well because, well, the ‘grass is always greener on the other side of the fence’ way of thinking isn’t always the truth.

Joey learns some harsh life lessons along the way, lessons she’ll put to good use… until the day Robin returns — and then who knows what will happen. We’ll have to wait until January 2021 to find out. This is a complete story, yet there is an indication that all is not done yet and will be picked up at this point (or near) in the next story of the series. Not a true cliffhanger, but you know more is to come.

If you love a heartfelt story with some laughter and some tears, interesting characters, and some thoughtful moments then you should be picking up Over the Faery Hill right now and get started on this magical adventure.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Over The Faery Hill' Book 1 of the Magical Midlife Misadventures
Author Jennifer L. Hart
Narrator Jacqueline Rendell
Length 8 hours 3 mins

Jennifer thank you for giving me the opportunity to listen to and review your brilliant and funny book, I loved it and was so hooked I finished it in just 1 day.

This is the first book in Jennifer L, Hart's new series, Magical Midlife Adventure's, and what a great start. I love her style of writing Jennifer has created a realistic story full of fantasy, magic, romance and laugh out loud humour. I also must add Jacquelline Rendell has done an amazing job, of narrating the book and bringing the characters to life, her voice is clear, pleasant and to listen to.

Joey Whitmore is a rather unlucky 42 year old, whose life has slowly fallen apart after an accident during her childhood. Joey meets a rather charming but naughty mischievous and slightly sly fairy prince that gives her the opportunity to go back in time and try and change her future, and that is where the fun, adventure, magic and laugh's begin.

Will Joey be successful on her journey and end up with everything she wants, will it be a happy future and make her happy ? or has she opened a can of worms and made things worse? Well I am not going to spoil the story for you, by telling you if she has a happy ever after ending you will have to read/listen to the book to find out. However I will give you a hint that that there is a great twist at the end, which will leave you wanting more and to move straight on to the next book

The next book in the series is called the Fae Side Of Forty, it was released on 24/02/21. I am looking forward to listening to it when it becomes available on Audible. I can not wait to see what is next in store for Joey and the other characters in this magical story.

Over the Faery Hill is a powerful and moving exploration of self-discovery and the journey towards personal redemption. As a reader in my forties, I found this book to be not just a story, but a mirror reflecting the profound truths of life that we often overlook in our pursuit of happiness.

The protagonist, a 40-year-old struggling with weight and dissatisfaction, takes us on an intimate journey through the corridors of her mind. What begins as a narrative of unfulfilled dreams and missed opportunities transforms into a compelling revelation: the source of her unhappiness is not external circumstances or the passage of time, but her own mindset.

The author skillfully weaves a narrative that resonates with anyone who has ever felt stuck or unfulfilled. The turning point, where the character realizes that it was not time or external factors stealing his happiness, but her own mindset and fixation on failures, is a profound and universally relatable moment.

The character's journey towards self-acceptance and living in the present is depicted with authenticity and sensitivity. The writing is both evocative and introspective, inviting readers to reflect on their own lives and choices. The narrative unfolds with a perfect balance of introspection, dialogue, and moments of revelation that keep the reader engaged from start to finish.

One of the strengths of this book is its ability to inspire without being preachy. The lessons learned by the protagonist feel organic and earned, making them all the more impactful. The themes of self-love, forgiveness, and embracing the present moment are delivered with a gentle touch, leaving a lasting impression on the reader's heart.

This is AMAZING

Make this your next read! I absolutely loved this book. I could empathise with a middle aged Joey who feels like the meaning of her life as an Olympic gymnast ended after a car wreck when she was 16. Since then life held no purpose she married but that ended in a way no-one would expect. Heck here she is middle aged she's living with her mum who it seems it's perpetually disappointed by Joey she has no career, she can't hold a job down for more than 6 months. If only she had never got into that car all those years before?.
What if you could go back in time? What event would you change? Maybe work harder at school? Not start in a bad relationship? Say things we always wished we could to family members who are now gone?
Well Joey is going to get the chance to go back and change things but what will happen if she can? Will she like who she becomes? What of the bargain she will have to make to do the impossible?
Such a well thought out story, the characters, though obviously fantasy were believable we can see Joey's worth but she can't. Such a great story line, don't tell me you haven't thought about going back and making changes?.this book shows us how our pasts make up a patchwork of the person we become, every bump, relationship argument makes up the whole, but we are to close to the subject matter to see that. Robin Goodfellow is a contradiction wrapped up in a nice package a trickster by nature how is he going to deal when bested?
Each chapter begins with a nugget of wisdom from Grammy B, which are clever and funny and all rooted in some truth just said without filter!
Bring on book 2 I hate cliff hangers!!!

This was a fun book that was definitely worth the read. Some parts even made me tear up a little. I loved the message that, even though some things in life might not have turned out as you had planned, you can still become everything you are meant to be—because that vision of who you “should” be isn’t the same as who you are *meant* to be. You are valuable. You affect the people around you, and you matter. That is a message that I can definitely get behind, and one I think so many people need, both young and middle-aged alike. I also laughed out loud reading this book several times.

The reason I didn’t give it more stars is because of some issues with development and editing that drove me crazy. I felt like the relationships between some of the characters (Joey and Clara, and even Joey and Robin) could’ve been developed better. There were also several issues with the editing, including switching from past tense to present. Near the end, the main character drives off, leaving her friend behind, and I had no idea where she left her because it wasn’t mentioned. I read this part over several times. I finally assumed she must’ve left her at her house… I hope that’s where she left her, anyway…

All of these things are issues that could’ve been resolved with a few more beta readers and a couple more rounds of editing.

However, I really did enjoy the story. I felt like it was really clever and the ending, overall, was very satisfying. The story itself, and the positive message, I seriously, absolutely loved. *Definitely* worth the read.

I really enjoyed this book. This story line poses the ultimate question if you could go back in time what would you change? For the main character there is no question, she knows exactly the date and even the time but she soon learns that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. It's a compiling story and has you asking the whole way through is she doing the right thing? The story is crafted to keep you hooked and emotionally invested in the out come of that decision. Joey is a damaged character that you can't help but feel for but at the same time she isn't as powerless as she thinks. The other characters are just as complicated and you will want to get the next book to find out what happens.
After a car accident wreaks her chances at the Olympics, Joey's life is one big mess until she meets Robin. But Robin is no ordinary man and he offers her the chance to rewrite history. Will stopping herself from getting in that car change her life and her luck? Robin is giving her the chance to travel three times in exchange for a favour that he can collect at any time. Robin is a Fae Prince and although he can not lie he has ways of getting around thing and getting what he wants and he wants Joey owing him a favour. Should she strike the deal? Because changing her last might not be everything she wishes for.

Oh, to have three wishes to go back in time and change what happened. Is there a catch, you betcha.
Joey Whitmore is in her 40's and has regrets, and boy have they ruined her life, and along comes a far trickster to offer her a chance to redo some of it. Oh yes, all her dreams can come true, if only she can change this one event and her life would be amazing the way it should have been.
What could go wrong. This is a story of a woman's self discovery that happiness is in her hands, she has been having trouble getting to it.
Joey deals with her life unfulfilled and regretful, and now a chance to soar. The support characters in this book are great and thru the story it reveals how much love she has in her life and doesn't realise it.
This book is funny, sad and whimsical and a little bit of realism thrown in to a magical midlife adventure.

I can't wait to read book two, as I feel Joey is going to come into her sassiness and love of adventure and using her life skills to the utmost.

Congratulations Jennifer, on another masterpiece. Looking forward to many more in the series.

I was very grateful to receive an advanced copy of this book, Jennifer L Hart is one of my favourite writers and continues to write great, enjoyable books.

"'All’s well that ends well. Hogwash. Nothing ever really ends except in faery tales.'-Notable quotable from Grammy B."

What if? What if you could go back and "fix" your life? Would you? Could you live with the consequences? Josephine "Joey" Whitmore has spent her entire life thinking that if the "what if" never happened everything would be so different. And after losing her last job....she's had it.Her car's impounded; Mom's is on its last legs, and Grammy B's is older than dirt. She's divorced, lives at home with Mom, and has never gotten beyond the accident. [Regret much?].

And the, opportunity knocks...if she answers, will she like what she sees? There are so many blessed spoilers I can't give them away....but, be careful what you wish for.

Such an un-put-downable read! I love Jennifer Hart's work in any field, but this one is unique and marvelously written. Joey, Clara and Robin are fantastic characters, and I have so many highlights in this ebook the thing glows pink. Fantastic work.IMHO, one of the best books of my year. Highly recommended 5/5

Over the Faery HIll is a fun story with lots of lessons to be learned. The main character, Joey, is a middle aged woman who feels like she is cursed. After a bad accident as a teen, an injury ruined her chances of becoming an Olympic star. Instead of adapting or finding something else to focus on for her life, she stays stuck in the past and in regret, and lives what she thinks is a miserable life. Then she meets a faery who bargains with her and offers her a chance to change the past. It's a fun story with magic, time travel, and light romance. I liked that the romance was not the full focus of the story. This is all about Joey and how she must overcome this or be truly cursed forever.
It resonated with me because I'm in my 30's and at times I have focused on my regrets or bad choices and it can be easy to get stuck in that mindset instead of focusing on the present and future.
The book was well written and the narrator for Audible was great. I really enjoyed this book!

A fae prince, magic, and time-travelling chaos!

Ever daydream about what might have been? Think about how your life could be better if ___ did/didn't happen? Well, that's what you find when Joey, a 40ish woman thinking she's a "loser", with the luck of Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum (complete with life guidelines from a "grandma Mazur") meets sexy, mysterious, flirty faery prince, Robin.
The chaotic time-traveling situations orchestrated by Robin made me giggle, groan, and ache for misguided Joey, who has to decide if what she always wanted, truly brings the happiness and acclaim she longs for.

I found this to be an entertaining listen, and I'm looking forward to book 2, because... that hook!🤯

I received an ALC from author, promotor, or publisher, and chose to leave an honest review.
