I read the first two stories and that was two too many for me. I really disliked the writing quite intensely.

A collection of five short stories all pondering queer and non-monogamous relationships. In 'The Sociologist', Polak gives the most direct discussion on this with the protagonist being an actual sociologist giving public talks on non-monagamy and 'debunking' love despite being disillusioned by their own advice. In 'No Petting', non-monogamy is contemplated through the protagonist's visit to the zoo, which sparks comparison between ourselves and other animals, freedom and society. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of Darwin's personal life and his studies of evolution. 'Staying Isolde' similarly used the assumed monogamy of lobsters to contrast against a straight couple's foray into non-monogamy.

'What do want to know' was the least philosophical of the bunch with a fairly straightforward story of an older woman who's daughter refuses to acknowledge her partner. And similarly with the title story, 'The Dandy', which tells the story of the people behind a popular feminist magazine. I'm typically attracted to stories about fame, a little too much name-dropping for my taste, but the form of the story was intriguing (told through a journalistic perspective) and the messiness of the relationships was entertaining.

A couple of interesting observations about modern relationships, especially the queer and polyamorous kind. I liked the varying styles, some diary like, another a fake portrait of a magazine’s editors.
There is no verdict, no “this is how it should be” but just views on how things are. Little vignettes about life.

Aan de andere kant van dit ontspiegelde glas zit trouwens de zilverruggorilla, baas van de wereld. Hij kauwt op zijn wortel en kijkt met kalme verwondering naar de homo sapiens voor hem. Arm wezen, zie je hem denken. Staat aan de enige goede kant van de kooi, erbuiten, en vraagt zich, naar binnen starend, slechts af waarom ze het liefste in een doosje gestopt wordt.

Minuscuul bundeltje in de toegankelijke reeks Literaire Juweeltjes, met deze keer vijf verhalen van Nina Polak. De verhalen gaan praktisch allemaal over relaties die aflopend of afgelopen zijn. Heel erg Polak dus, net als de schrijfstijl, die wel iets meer basic is dan in haar romans. 'Isolde blijven' en 'Wat wil je weten' vond ik de beste verhalen. De andere drie vond ik eigenlijk behoorlijk matig. Ik denk dat Polak niet echt tot haar recht komt als korteverhalen-auteur. Ze is bij uitstek iemand die haar personages heel lang op de voet volgt tot het bijna als jennen voelt, zo nauwgezet, en in deze extreem korte verhaaltjes heeft ze daar niet de ruimte voor.

Daarmee heb ik Nina Polaks gehele oeuvre tot nu toe gelezen. De resultaten: 1 keer twee sterren, 1 keer drie sterren, 1 keer vier sterren, 1 keer vijf sterren. Is zij nou zo grillig of ben ik dat?!

Super-quick and super-clever, The Dandy is a delightful short story collection that gives an interesting edge to modern relationships.

It has a thought-provoking simplicity to the style and characters in every story. Relatable and very easy to read, I highly recommend to readers who enjoy brief bursts of storytelling about relationships and people who have a quirky side to their personas.

Een van de meest grappige literaire juweeltjes die ik in lange tijd gelezen heb is ‘De Dandy’ van Nina Polak. De ironie en gelaagdheid in de verhalen maken van dit kleine boekje een prachtige eerste kennismaking met het werk van de auteur.
Dit literaire juweeltje bestaat uit vijf verhalen, die de lezer erg nieuwsgierig maken naar haar verdere werk. De subtiele ironie in ‘Isolde blijven’ pakt de lezer meteen en maakt nieuwsgierig naar de andere verhalen. Daarnaast zijn relaties volgens mij het verbindende motief in deze kleine verhalenbundel. In ieder verhaal komt dit op een bepaalde manier aan bod, waarvan ‘Isolde blijven’ een echt ijzersterk voorbeeld is.
Dus voor lezers die van ironie houden met meerduidigheid en willen kennismaken met het werk van Nina Polak is dit literaire juweeltje een aanrader.

Jeetje wat een fijne schrijfster! Heb meteen, ook na het beluisteren van deze podcast, van Theater Bellevue, Gebrek is een groot woord van haar gekocht. Heb er zin in. Ondertussen is mijn Kerstvakantiestapel drie meter en hoorde ik laatst dat ik maar één week vrij heb, en dan nog alleen als ik vind dat ik per se vrij moet hebben.

De dandy zijn 4 korte verhalen in een literair juweeltje. De dandy zelf is een interview, een artikel, over opkomst en teloorgang van een hardcore feministisch tijdschrift en de vrouwen die aan de touwtjes trokken. Ronduit geniaal.
