I read this book as a teenager and loved it. Took me years to find it again. Finally I did and I still love it just as much as I did back then. Such a mature romance for a teen book. It truly read like an adult novel as much as possible, with a lovely slow burn.
I remember the day I bought it, I was a highschool freshman. I remember reading it while seating on a window ledge using a lamp post's light bec I was no longer allowed to turn on the bedroom light. I miss my teenage books. This was one of my favorites.
Just reread this with my 13 year old daughter- while romance books have come A LONG way, she loved the story and I loved the nostalgia! I read this so many times as a teenager.
This gets top marks for its genre. Great premise, loved the modern take of city girl/country visit and boy, Lane was hot! Responsible, hardworking, football star in the past but a serious guy. :-) Some of those lines that came from his "voice" were wonderful. All of the characters were rational, true to character and the "obstacles" to the romance between Lane and Stacy, given the time frame, were realistic. I appreciated that Stacy was not a "complainer" character and she rose to her challenges. That being said, her ability to put together 3-course meals fairly easily as a 16 or 17-year old for a family of 8 (including Lane and Grandma) when supposedly all she did before was go to a boarding school and play tennis was a little out there. And finding out at the end that she owned a house of her own (which presumably would be used after she and Lane got married and could raise kids of their own, visiting aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents down the road) --- LOVE!
Worst line of the book, "I can't even decide what clothes to wear -- how can I pick a president?". Is it always truly necessary to make the girls look STUPID to appear more desirable?
