Henley is off-limits for Levar. So why can't he stay away?
Five years ago, Levar survived a terrorist attack. The bombing left its scars, but he's picked up his life. He loves working for the vice president-who is openly bisexual-as his press secretary.

Levar can't afford a pesky attraction that proves to be frustratingly stubborn. Worse, those highly combustible sparks are with the very last person he should be falling for: Henley Platt, a well-known reporter covering the White House.

Henley may not be Levar's enemy, but he's definitely not his friend. He can't be, not when their jobs put them on opposite sides. Henley is absolutely off-limits, even when he shows his appreciation for the sexy lingerie Levar loves to wear.

When the terrorists strike again with a devastating blow to the White House, Levar and Henley lean on each other for support. The sparks become a raging fire that won't be doused, but what happens if they're found out?

Press is the first book in the White House Men series, a romantic suspense gay romance series set in the White House. Think The West Wing but gay, and with less politics. Each book has a new love story with a happily ever after, but the suspense plot will continue throughout the books, so the series needs to be read in order. Press has 100k words. TW for terrorism and violence.

Would you like the long or the short version of my bio?

The short? You got it.

I write steamy gay romance books and I love it. I also love reading books. Books are everything.

How was that?

A little more detail? Gotcha.

I started writing my first stories when I was a teen…on a freaking typewriter. I still have these, and they’re adorably romantic. And bad, haha. Fear of failing kept me from following my dream to become a romance author, so you can imagine how proud and ecstatic I am that I finally overcame my fears and self doubt and did it. I adore my genre because I love writing and reading about flawed, strong men who are just a tad broken..but find their happy ever after anyway.

My favorite books to read are pretty much all MM/gay romances as long as it has a happy end. Kink is a plus… Aside from that, I also read a lot of nonfiction and not just books on writing. Popular psychology is a favorite topic of mine and so are self help and sociology.

Hobbies? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Just kidding. I love traveling, spending time near the ocean, and hiking. But I love books more.

How could something so monumentally stupid feel so good?

4.5***** stars

whoop whoop, that was AWESOME!

"I'll miss you," he whispered. "I'll miss you so freaking much."
"I'll miss you too. You have no idea how much I wish things were different."
"We could have been good together.“

After the Omegas and the Dragons I now might be in love with another one of Nora Phoenix’s romantic suspense series. She does that so so good! Not paranormal this one, tho, but political.

Welcome to the White House...
as well as to a very captivating story and a forbidden romance.

Levar: press secretary for the vice president

Henley: the White House correspondent for the Washington Times.

Levar and Henley have absolute great chemistry, a connection and also a deeper understanding for each other after shared, tragic events in the past and their dedication for their respective jobs. But still —a White House press secretary and a journalist— that has disaster written all over it. And maybe even heartbreak.

“It’s super complicated. He’s… Our jobs aren’t compatible.”
“He’s a competitor?”
“Levar Cousins, Mom. I’m in love with Levar Cousins.”
“Oh, honey…”

The first book in this series is definitely intense on the romance feels because of the forbidden aspects, but it also sets off an exciting (if not to say thrilling) plot I can’t wait to continue in the next one.

This one was not high heat and also slow burn but oh so very sexy still. Gawd, Levar’s silk panties and Henley’s appreciation for them —so good!

*Strong TW for detailed description of terrorist attack.

To put it in a nutshell:

A little bit of intrigue and high topicality here. A love against the rules and lots of emotions there. Oh, and the gayest White House in history... ;-) (In real life, a certain someone would probably tweet-ranting until his phone goes up in flames before being sent into apoplexy.) Not to forget... p(m)anties. Need I say more? ;-)

Overall a heady mixture and a captivating start to a new series with lots of loveable characters who gave the events an authentic feeling. I had a few issues with the relationship, though, since up until 80% or so - although they do have some nice chemistry - Levar and Henley are not even an item, so the lovey-dovey ending was a bit out of place and not really believable to me.

Levar's and Henley's story is told, the story arc is not. Not finished, I mean. I have my suspicions who's really behind the attacks, but there's only one way to find out... By waiting for the next books in this series. ;-)

If I tell you that my number one TV show of all time is The West Wing, you can probably guess how excited I am for this series.

And Press is a great introduction to the crazy world that is working in the White House.

I have two minor concerns with this book though which I'm going to spoiler although they don't reveal anything specific.

So they were the only two things which popped me out of a narrative which is superbly paced, packed with great world building without a dumping of information and which has a realness to it which I'm really looking forward to seeing develop further.

Levar and Henley are a gorgeous pair. They're scorching hot, the chemistry and connection between them flies off the page.

There's also a fantastic set of secondary characters who are going to make up the rest of the series as I understand it and I'm very keen to see how Nora is going to pair them all up.

The main plot itself is intriguing, I love anything which hints of dodgy dealings in the corridors of power 😁

Very much itching to find out more as this series progresses.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I struggled with this one and actually found myself bored at some points. It started off well, but then I feel like it dragged in the middle, to the point where I put it down to read something else before finishing.

Understandably, since this is the first in a series with a continuing plot through the series, there were a lot of characters, plot points, and background introduced, and sometimes that just slowed everything for me. The underlying arc is intriguing and I'm interested to see who is behind everything and why, I just didn't gel with the presentation of it I guess.

I also didn't feel a lot of chemistry between the two leads, possibly since there is so much going on and they aren't together a lot during the majority of the story.

I'll give the next story a go. Like I said, the underlying story arc is good. I just hope with all the character and plot introductions out of the way, the pace and focus will be tighter in the next one. There were also quite a bit of grammatical errors and missing words in the story that could have been avoided with a proofread.

It seemed a little bit long, some parts may have been cut but I also think that being the first in the series new characters should be introduced for the next ones.
That saying, I will jump on the next one 🤣

4.5 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 (lovesick fools)

This has everything. The transition from professional relationship, to flirting, to crossing that professional line, to love and to heartbreak. Truly, this is what I love about books where characters fall in love. I get to be around for everything. I'm not as fond of established-relationships or second chances.

The ONLY thing that could have been better is the catalyst for the resolution of the book. Now, it wasn't something that made NO sense. It made a lot of sense, but it did come out of nowhere.

I initially thought that this would be about a group of queer friends or teammates, but they really started off as strangers, brought together by tragedy. I could tell exactly who was the next book was going to be about because the characters were ham-fisted into the story for a brief moment. Like, the MC was attracted to both of them even though he had expressed no attraction to anyone else besides the other MC for the entirety of the book.

Nora Phoenix write for older audiences, focusing on older characters like men in their 30s and 40s, which at first I wasn't appreciative of. Like, why would I want to read about someone with a dad bod, an average dick and insecurities? I could just live my life, right? 😆 she's won me over, though. I like seeing a mix of attractive and average people. People of different body sizes.

Can wait to read the next one (though if you know me, I'll probably forget and get around to reading it 6 months from now.)

I've been following Nora Phoenix's career for a few years now. I'm a part of her facebook group. Her story is a huge inspiration for my own writing. I own a lot of her books. Yet I've never actually read anything of hers until now. I don't even know why, it just didn't happen. I'm sad that it took me so long to get around to it, but I'm happy because now I have so much catching up to do.

I really enjoyed Press. Before I found out about M/M I really enjoyed reading a political thriller every now and then. So this really was the best of both worlds. The plot was engaging, I was rooting for the Mc's, I really cared about some of the secondary characters (I can't wait for some of them to get their own HEA's).

However I do think a few years of reading M/M have softened me. I wasn't all too happy about some of the violent things happening. The first chapter had me horrified. It does come with a trigger warning for violence though, so I mean, I can't blame anyone.

I'm looking forward to next book.

Wow, I shouldn’t have liked this book. It had so many things I don’t usually care for. There was inner monologue and men wearing women’s lingerie. These are not things I usually enjoy. And yet, I really loved this book. It was so full of feelings. I cried from happiness and from sadness. I also loved Henley and Levar. I was so sorry for it to end.

Smart and sexy

Politics meets romance in this forbidden love tale of a quick-witted Press secretary and a shrewd White House reporter.

Nora Phoenix does a wonderful job escalating the tension between these clever men. Clever dialogue and fast West Wing style pacing makes this story a breeze to read.

Disclaimer.... I was a sensitivity berareader for this book....

I was one of the very lucky people who had the chance to read this book really early. Reading this was a privilege for so many reasons (personal and general) and I've been debating a review that would do it justice.
This is me trying to do it justice…

1. The Beginning…
This book starts with a bang. Five years ago, a tragedy occurs, our two main MCs cross paths, but because of the situation, don’t interact. Fast forward to 5 years later, each man is now holding their dream/almost dream jobs. Now, they most certainly interact, in a professional aspect only.

2. The MCs…
- Levar:
Age: 32 years-old
Job: the VP’s press secretary
Inspiration pic:

Levar focuses on the job. Five years ago, he survived the terrorist attack, but not without emotional and physical scars. Today he is ambitious, focused, and determined to rise up and get through any obstacles he may face.
- Henley:
Age: 39 years-old
Job: White House Reporter
Inspiration pic: #DaddyZac with brown eyes

Henley has also survived that fateful day five years ago. He’s doing what he loves, has a boyfriend, and has fun antagonizing Levar. But that slowly unravels and Henley is left questioning his life choices and the reasons behind them.

3. The Plot…

Based on the title alone, you know there will be politics in it. You’re in the white house quite a lot, our MCs interact there, changes occur there, especially after the second terrorist attack. What was refreshing though, was that the politics never overwhelmed the story. The romance didn’t take a backseat to the politics. On the contrary, everything that happened in the white house somehow makes our MCs grow closer together, despite the many obstacles thrown their way.

4. The Relationship…

As you might imagine, Levar and Henley aren’t supposed to or allowed to be together because of their jobs. there’s a conflict of interest there and both of them are professional to a fault, loyal to their jobs, and determined to stay that way. Nevertheless, they start a friendship at first, based on their shared tragedy and their genuine interest in each other. However, this friendship slowly morphs into more. The transformation is as innocent as it is inevitable. Any hang-ups each MC has with himself is negated by the other’s acceptance. They’re truly puzzle-pieces who fit in every way.

“Thank you.
For being a creep?
For being sweet and affirming me the way I am, Levar said.”

5. The Intimacy:
This is a slow burn romance at its best. Pseudo-enemies, to friends to lovers. The transition was smooth and seamless. These men didn’t fall into bed right away, and their sex scenes, though hot and heavy, were not the most intimate parts of their relationship. The hugging, being there for each other, their banter and serious discussions, and the acceptance of every facet of the other’s personality and appearance were much more poignant.

“You’re talking to your friend Henley, not reporter Henley Platt from Washington Times, he said softly.”

P.S. the sex is still hot though…

“Hush baby… This is my show, my gift to you.”

6. The Suspense…

This aspect of the plot is pretty consistent throughout the whole book. There is always something happening; a problem to be solved, a crisis that needs to be averted or worked through. You’re on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what will happen, be it with the MCs’ relationship or the White House crises. A literal “Blast From The Past” changes everything and the story takes a huge turn towards change.

7. The HEA…

Our MCS work HARD to get their HEA. Sacrifices and changes are made to ensure the continuity of their relationship. Both MCs grow and thrive in their new roles and that only brings them closer still.

“Levar had the best friend in the world….and also the best boyfriend.”

I highly recommend this series, and I can’t wait to see what the other books will bring to the table.

Not a bad start to Nora's new series. I suspect the possible, but not probable 'terrorist' storyline will be the main thread that encompasses the entire series , together with the fact that several of the important posts at the White House are taken up by men who are gay . Some of the first names in the story i.e. Calix [WTH?? 😏], Coulsdon etc are rather weird, but what do I know 🤔. I have no idea how long the series is planned to be, but I've already picked out the leads of some of the other stories...Rhett, Calix, Seth, oh and maybe even President Shafer himself.

As is usual with Nora's stories, I had real problems with the quality of the 'so-called' editing, grammatical errors, typos etc. For heaven's sake, PLEASE start using the services of a professional editor!! Perhaps she's comfortable with who she uses and is not too bothered by/couldn't care less what her readers think, and perhaps one of these days I WILL vote with my purse and stop buying her substandard work? I also think she suffers sometimes from the fact that she's not American and is probably thinking with her European hat on...and yes, I'm being generous. 3 rounded down stars.

***edit March 2021. Have called a halt to this series and Nora's work in general. If she doesn't care enough about her readers to put out a decently edited 'product', then I can't be bothered to buy any more of her stories. Sorry, not sorry.***

It was okay! Levar and Henley spent over half the book stuck in their feelings, constantly thinking about each other but never actually doing anything about it. It dragged a bit, and then suddenly—boom—they’re together and living their happily ever after in the last chunk of the book (like, 80% in).

That said, I really enjoyed the political intrigue. That part kept things interesting and is honestly the main reason I’ll keep going with the series. So while the romance didn’t totally hit for me, the worldbuilding and tension behind the scenes made it worth the read.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Press is the first book in Nora Phoenix’s White House Men series. She describes the series as “The West Wing but gay, and with less politics.” For those familiar with the TV show, there is that same vibe of energetic idealists working to make the world better. Phoenix also throws in a few Easter eggs, including a White House correspondent named Danny (who I presume is a nod to the show’s reporter Danny Concannon), as well as the frequent request to “walk with me” (which harkens me back to the “walk and talk” style of the show). That said, while the story gave me a touch of nostalgia for the TV series, there is definitely no reason you need to be at all familiar with it to enjoy or follow along with this book.

Press follows dual paths of the romance between Levar and Henley, along with a simmering suspense element with regard to the bombing. Not only do we witness the attack through the prologue in the eyes of both men, but it is clear from the start that the Pride Bombing has deeply affected both Henley and Levar.

5 stars!!

I stayed up way too late finishing this. It was so good! I know it’s not political. But it does have a touch of politics, enough so that it fits the theme but not too much that it just overtakes everything and broadcasts the author’s political stance.

I’m definitely intrigued by the political events in this book and have a feeling it’s going to be a long time before we hear the conclusion to the political events that happened in this book. Can’t wait!

Good start, but I wished there was more action with the investigations/bombing/drama within the White House.

Levar and Henley had great banter and I liked their relationship.

Overall good story, but I am excited to read about Rhett in book 3!

This story wasn't bad but it didn't read like a typical romance. Political intrigue greatly overshadowed what little romance was presented and even though the story wasn't hard to follow I wasn't prepared to be as invested in the overall plot to enjoy this as much as I could have. I wanted romance first, politics and political mystery second. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here.

Levar Cousins, 32, starts off as assistant press secretary to the vice president and is later promoted to press secretary. Henley Platt, 39, is the White House Correspondent for the Washington Times. They are both survivors of a terrorist bombing and therefore understood each other in ways most others couldn’t. They also… couldn’t stop flirting with each other. Because having any relationship beyond a professional one created a conflict of interest that could get Levar fired, they never let their relationship develop beyond a certain point. Their feelings for each other continued to grow but they never fully acted on them until the end of the story. They did have sex a few times but there wasn’t any intense longing, jealousy, possessiveness, or passion. They mostly tried to ignore their feelings, focus on their jobs, and try to convince themselves that any relationship they might have is doomed to fail.

The overall plot is not resolved and I do plan on eventually reading the second book. Again, this story wasn’t bad, it just didn’t have enough romance. I’m hoping that since the groundwork has been laid for the overall plot and all necessary character introductions have been made, future stories will focus more on the relationships of the main characters.

Nora is one of those authors that can jump through tropes and genres and do something amazing every time. This series is more political than any of her books (barring maybe the irresistible omegas series, but that is also very fantastical) and I swear this is the only way you can get me to read the functioning of a foreign government.
Set in a parallel timeline, this book starts with a terrorist attack that both main characters live through. It has dashes of forbidden love and relying on, helping and trusting each other even though they know they shouldn't. It's beautiful and 100% worth the time.

I liked the MC’s and the slow-off-limits-burn they had going on. But this dragged in parts and I was skimming. When the ending came I was a bit underwhelmed with how everything just worked out. Maybe we’ll see the fallout of their relationship in further books?

I was intrigued enough by book 2’s sample so I’ll keep reading and see.

Very solid 3.5 stars

Terrific story centred on the fall out from a dreadful bombing at a New York Pride parade five years before the main action. The story's told through two survivors of that day, Levar (now a press secretary to the Vice President) and Henley (a White House press correspondent), with a focus (obv) on the public communication of events, following a second horrific incident.

I really liked:
(a) the sensitive and nuanced exploration of survivors' reactions to having survived;
(b) the confident way the strands of the plot are introduced and explained, through the lens of the White House press corps. (There's an interesting (though brief) discussion about the extent to which journalists are responsible for the uses to which other people put the information they publish.)
(c) the hugely authoritative details of how the press corps and the White House operates. Is it accurate? No idea, but to this massive "West Wing" fan, it felt spot on, and I was totally captivated by the expert scene setting.

Where does that leave the romance? Well...trailing, I'm afraid. Phoenix is good at charting the developing friendship between Levar & Henley, and using their jobs to illustrate their characters. But tbh the flipping from friendship to ILY came a bit out of nowhere, and I was annoyed by the frequent & stupid breaches of their professional responsibilities. In structural terms, the solution to their "we can never be together" conflict was provided by a third party. I know I'm being picky, but a deus ex machina always makes the MCs appear weak: I prefer my MCs to solve their own problems.

To be fair, the plot - which will stretch over 7 books, I think - is complex & the ramifications far-reaching, so it's perhaps no wonder that the romance feels overshadowed. I'm certainly going to pick up the next couple of books in the series (which will each feature different MCs) because the plot and setting really hooked me in.

PS I have no idea who is meant to be featured on the cover, but he looks in need of a laxative. And a nice warm vest.

Given its premise, Press, the first book in Nora Phoenix’s ‘White House Men’ series, should be a great read. It isn’t.

Even setting aside both the gratuitous inclusion of a main character’s fascination with wearing women’s lace panties - something completely unnecessary to the plot - and the page after page after page of repetitive narratives of sexual encounters, the most important element of the story - the identification of the mastermind behind terrorist bombings in NYC and DC - is raised again and again, and then just dropped.

In her blurb for Press, Phoenix indicates that the mystery will be solved in some future novel in the series. But for the moment the reader is simply left hanging.

The only reason this novel receives 3 Stars is because of the well developed primary and secondary characters Phoenix has created.

The protagonists, Levar Cousins, a White House Press Secretary, and Henley Platt, a highly respected White House reporter, are terrific characters. They deserve a better telling of their story than they receive in Press.

An exciting new series by Nora Phoenix, and if the rest of the series is like book 1, then I am in for a great time indeed. This book was informative and fun, with a sizzling hot, yet real romance between two very likeable men. Levar and Henley are both fully-rounded characters, each with his own voice, and I love them both and was totally invested in their HEA. I also liked the secondary characters; the plot was interesting and I think there are surprises ahead in the books to come.

I usually hate books about politics (or politics, full stop), but the politics is few and far between, more as background then an actual topic. It just set the stage for a believable story.

There is descriptions of violence in the book, so read carefully if that is a trigger.
