Everyone looked up to the Senator, and he mentored so many people. A few knew about his mistress, and even his illegitimate daughter. But no one knew his ultimate secret. A secret that would only be revealed when he died, but death did come a little sooner than expected.
Kelly's son, Cash, is running for the Oregon Senate with the blessing of Senator Johnson. But when the Senator dies, long held secrets come out, even some about people who were threatening to blackmail him. And was he really murdered? Could it have been suicide?
Only his wife knows, but she's become mentally incapacitated. Kelly and Mike never planned to get involved in this case, but sometimes, you just have to do the right thing.
An inspirational page-turning cozy mystery that will leave you with a smile on your face, a tear on your cheek, and a belief in your fellow man.
I enjoyed this book. Most of the book was over before the murder happened but I thought this worked well because it gave the author plenty of time to introduce you to the suspects and there motives for wanting the senator dead. Like normal there was plenty of suspects to keep you guessing and each gave you his or her perspective. There did seem to be a lot of people who felt there only option left was murder of someone who seemed to be a nice guy but good for the listener as it made for an interesting story. The mystery was good and and played out well as each suspect was eliminated until only one possible answer was left.. Despite the death and the sad subject I liked the out come of the story, if only they had talked to each other earlier. Kelly’s son, Cash, is running for the Oregon Senate with the blessing of Senator Johnson who is standing down at the next election did to cancer. Unfortunately he doesn't make it. Was it suicide or did someone else pull the trigger on the gun? The day before the senator death Roxie introduced her friend to Kelly. She needs Kelly's advice it seems she had been seeing the senator despite him being married and he was being blackmailed by at least two people over his affair with her. One was by his step daughter jealous that she wasn't entitled to any money from his will and the other was a high powered fixer that wanted him to vote a certain way. Could one of them have killed him? As Kelly, Mike and Cash look into the death they find out that they were by far not the only ones that wanted him dead. Can they find the killer and bring him or her to justice? I liked the narrator she does a good job with the voices and even gave one of the characters a Scottish accent. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I have read all of the books in this series and have liked all the characters and their dogs. I especially like Kelly’s first dog, Rebel ,a boxer, since I’m a boxer lover myself. This book features Kelly’s son, Cash. He recently completed his tours of duty and was injured thus retiring from the military. In this book he is running for state senator and his mentor is killed. There are several people who want the senator dead. The senator does die, but he was on his deathbed with cancer. Was it the cancer, suicide or murder. The coroner says he couldn’t determine if it was a suicide or murder. One by one the suspects are eliminated til we know who the possible killer could be. This book is easy reading and keeps your interest to find out “who done it”. In past books, the boxer always saved the day. In the last book it was Rebel and Cash’es MWD who saved Kelly. This book had no dog helping which resulted in my four not five star rating. This is a cozy mystery and a fun entertaining book. It won’t win any awards, but it is enjoyable and easy reading. I have the next book already loaded and ready to read.
Dianne Harman strikes again. Book 20 in the Cedar Bay mystery series has all the elements of a well written mystery that delivers a punch. Senator Johnson is dying of cancer and does not have long to live. Yet he has more people wishing him dead, than celebrating his well-lived life.
Two men vying for the top job, Jerome, the senior man in the Senator's office, and Cash, the Senator's chosen favorite. A disinherited daughter Gigi from his wife's first marriage is filled with rage at both her parents. A lobbyist who threatens him with blackmail if he negates his promise of a certain vote. His wife Judy, struggling with mental illness, becomes more unhinged when she learns a secret that the Senator has hidden for more than a decade.
With a skilled and deft hand this bestselling author takes us along this intricate, mysterious path.
Be sure to read it! Another delightful book by the master of cozy mysteries, Dianne Harman.
Politicians all seem to have their little secrets which they keep securely hidden. It doesn't necessarily mean they are bad people but others seem to think that politicians are not human and are not allowed to have private lives.
Cash was the current Senator's pock for when he retired. He had cancer and did not have very long to live. This Senator was much beloved by the people. Unfortunately he had to make decisions that not everyone agreed with. And unscrupulous people would try to use his secrets against him to get what they wanted.
Kelly got drawn into one of these secrets and so felt for the woman that she tried to help. Unfortunately the Senator was murdered or committed suicide in his office-----
Who did it? You will probably not guess--but I know you will not guess at the ending!!
I love a really good cozy mystery and this one is just that! I read this in one sitting, three hours of sheer shutting out the rest of the world! Then, I made out my shopping list so I can try the recipes; I'll have to figure out some ingredient substitutes, but hopefully, my creations will come close? No gluten, no dairy, and no liquor??? Now, I'm going to go pick out another one of Dianne Harman's cozy mysteries for tomorrow's read!
I started reading this book, and I got sad. I was sad when I learned about the senator’s health then. It made me wonder if she took the concept from real life events. A real senator etc. But anyway, I found myself crying when the senator died. Call me an old softy. It, the one good thing was the dessert that Mike fixed. Going to try that myself.
I enjoyed reading this book because it was intriguingly different. Kelly was given a beautiful orchid by a grower whom she didn't know. This was the beginning of a complex mystery that ended with the death of a Senator. Very good characters who provided lots of surprises.
Kelly's son, Cash, is running for state senator under the mentoring of Senator Johnson. The senator is near the end with terminal cancer when a gunshot is heard from his office. Although several people had threatened exposure of a family scandal, the police could not determine murder or suicide. A very interesting family story.
this is another wonderful story, the senator picks Kelly's son Cash to run in his place, they know the senator is dying but when he isfound died , it turns out to be murder, but by who and why Kelly and the gang start to look into . if you have read any of the other books you will want to read this one very good
This 20th book in the Cedar Bay cozy series centers around an Oregon senator’s murder. Although he is dying of cancer, several people have a grudge and Kelly, her husband and team must work to figure out who did it. There is a personal connection as well, as Kelly’s son, Cash, is taking over the senatorial seat. Such an easy reading series
It is amazing the reason so many people actually wanted the Senator dead. Yet the crew who come to attend to those who grew up separately, must come together. Now, to wish I had orchards. Read the book. Dianne Harman writes a good book, as always. I only wish this one was a tad bit longer.
Deep realistic unhappiness. True so many marriages stay together for egos, careers, what others will say! Living lies children are hurt and when it goes to far. This time Kelly didn't get into trouble.
Kelly has her work cut out for her with this one! This one is twisted and full of characters involved in politics. It has family drama and secrets. There is a husband and wife. They both have children from before. They both are keeping secrets. I enjoyed the characters and the plot.
Senator is dying, and many are wanting to hurry his death. Secrets are hidden are now coming out. Plenty of clues and suspects to figure out. Good narration and good story to enjoy. Given audio for my voluntary review
Wow, another read that I could not put down. So many choices as to who murdered the Senator! Plausible reasons for the deed made the outcome one of doubt. Very good book!
I have read and enjoyed many books by this author but not this one. I found it rather disjointed and a poor thought out plot. I would not recommend this particular book.
This books premise might have been more believable had it been published many years ago not in 2020. The big secret being hidden would not habe been much of a secret nowadays. Way to easy to discover so this hurt my enjoyment of the book.
The Senator is dying of cancer and chooses to back Cash Conner as he replacement. What secrets does he have that will come out at his death and who is responsible. Intriguing look at our political system and small town life.
This was a very interesting portrayal of a lasting hidden love that in the end united all members of what should have been a family. The recipes are delicious as always.
This Series is a great read, entertaining and it does hold your interest. A little small but still very good. Very easy to read in one sitting. Great reading everyone!
Liked this book and like the series, but proofreading is becoming an issue. Mixing up Kelly and Liz and his and hers. Is the author really writing these books?
