The Christmas Table

Rate this book
From Donna VanLiere, the New York Times bestselling author of The Christmas Hope series comes another heartwarming, inspirational story for the holidays, The Christmas Table.

In June 1972, John Creighton determines to build his wife Joan a kitchen table. His largest project to date had been picture frames but he promises to have the table ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Inspired to put something delicious on the table, Joan turns to her mother’s recipes she had given to Joan when she and John married.

In June 2012, Lauren Mabrey discovers she’s pregnant. Gloria, Miriam, and the rest of her friends at Glory’s Place begin to pitch in, helping Lauren prepare their home for the baby. On a visit to the local furniture builder, Lauren finds a table that he bought at a garage sale but has recently refinished. Once home, a drawer is discovered under the table which contains a stack of recipe cards. Growing up in one foster home after another, Lauren never learned to cook and is fascinated as she reads through the cards. Personal notes have been written on each one from the mother to her daughter and time and again Lauren wonders where they lived, when they lived, and in a strange way, she feels connected to this mother and her daughter and wants to make the mother proud.

The story continues to from 1972 to 2012 as Joan battles breast cancer and Lauren learns to cook, preparing for the baby’s arrival. As Christmas nears, can Lauren unlock the mystery of the table, and find the peace she's always longed for?

This is a Christmas story, and this is the 10th book in the Christmas Hope series. I have not read the other books in this series. This is way more than a Christmas story. This story is also different then most other Christmas/holiday story I have read before. I love reading Christmas story in June and July. This story follows two families that is going through life changes events near Christmas. The time lines are 1972 and 2012. Everything in the story comes together over recipe cards and a table. I really loved this story, and the ending was so very good. I did find the time lines hard to follow at first because there was nothing big happening or very different to make them stay apart in my mind, but that changed fast. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

The Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere is a 2020 St. Martin’s Press publication.

2012

Lauren and Travis learn they are about to become parents. Lauren’s friends from Glory House pitch in to help her prepare for the pending arrival. Visiting a local shop, Lauren buys a used table and discovers, by chance, a stack of old recipes. Not knowing how to cook, Lauren decides to try out these recipes. As a result, she realizes how special these memories must be for someone and hopes to find the table’s previous owner.

1972

John Creighton is trying to build a table for his wife, Joan, hoping to have it done by Thanksgiving. While John struggles with his project, Joan, who is battling breast cancer, begins work on the Thanksgiving meal- determined to make it more special than ever. For inspiration, she turns to her mother’s recipes…

In all the years I’ve been reading Christmas/holiday books, I have never read one of Donna VanLiere’s books!! I do have several of them on my Kindle- but… well, you know the score by now…

I’m thankful I made time to look through my TBR pile for older holiday stories before diving into some of the newer ones I’ve added this year. This is such a lovely story! The power of prayer and faith is woven throughout the story, as does the various stages in life and the challenges and wonders they present.

Overall, though, it’s an inspirational story that will warm your heart and leave you with a full heart and a smile on your face!!

I love the idea of Christmas in July. It just brings me a warm and fuzzy feeling! So, I picked up a Christmas book.

This story is presented in dual time settings. One in 1972 and one in 2012. In 1972 John decides to make a special table for his wife Joan and their two children and hopes to have it finished before Christmas. In 2012 newly married couple Travis and Lauren purchase a refurbished table for their home. Underneath the table they find a secret drawer that houses some handwritten recipe cards.

I loved the idea of the recipes bringing the families together. I was so delighted that the author included some of them at the end of the book! I did not even know that a Chocolate Chip Cheeseball existed! I made this for my family as a treat and they loved it! I also can't wait to try Aunt Dee Dee's Peanut Butter Fudge! It sounds delicious. I think Christmas might be extra "tasty" this year!

This was a heartwarming and faith-based story that touched my heart. I thoroughly enjoyed how the stories intertwined. I really could see this as a very sweet Christmas movie! It truly was a treat to read! (Honourable mention to this cover that I absolutely love.)

The Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere is the tenth full length book in the holiday romance Christmas Hope series. The Christmas Hope series is another that changes characters in each book along the way so all ten full length and the one novella in the series can be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so.

The story in The Christmas Table divides it’s time between two timelines changing the point of view between the main characters in each. In 1972 Joan’s husband, John, has promised his wife a new table before Thanksgiving but Joan’s illness has put him behind schedule. In 2012 Lauren Mabrey has discovered that she is expecting a baby and her friends begin to help her get read to welcome her little one. During this time Lauren purchases a new kitchen table and finds recipe cards inside that she is sure would be missed by their owner.

The Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere is the first book of the Christmas Hope series that I have read myself and the story did read fine as a standalone. I loved the way the timelines were woven together in the end of the story and they did flow well all throughout with the characters being distinct from one another. I will say I did feel it could have gone a little deeper as it was a shorter novel leaving me wanting a bit more but overall it was a nice, sweet Christmas tale.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Such a sweet Christmas story! very inspirational story of faith and the power of prayer. Two different families decades apart share love, the warmth of holidays as well as recipes when the second family buys the first family's dining table. It heals them and brings them together in a time when they need it the most. A very inspirational story of the power of prayer.

Heartwarming Christmas dual timeline (1972/2012) where two couples each receive news that tests their faith, but ultimately gives them the strength they need to rise above.

A tug at your heartstrings kind of tale, this will no doubt be on Mom's Christmas list this year.

A heartwarming Christmas story based on a special table that connects two different generations with delicious recipes? Chocolate Chip Cheeseball? Truffle Cookies? Three-cheese Egg Casserole? Pumpkin Ricotta Pancakes? Yes, please! I have been missing out on The Christmas Hope series all these years and I did not realize it. This story was beautifully done with some great bantering between two old friends adding a comedic element. I loved it and can't wait to try some of these recipes.

This is a unique story about a used table that Lauren Mabrey buys from a furniture store. There's a history that comes with the table. It's a time split novel that travels from May 1972 ( Joan and John Creighton) to May 2012 ( Lauren and Travis Mabrey). Readers get to know two different families and find out the story and history behind this table.
After bringing the table home Lauren finds a drawer under the table top. Inside she finds some old family recipes. Lauren doesn't cook and becomes fascinated with following the recipes and learning to put out good meals for Travis. She knows that somewhere someone is missing these recipes and begins a search to return them to their rightful owner.
There's a lot of heartache and challenges with the Creighton family in 1972. John built the table from scrap wood he found in a barn. He hopes to have it done by October but than circumstances causes him to fall behind schedule. He sets a new goal for Thanksgiving but then moves it to Christmas. His goal is to give it to Joan for Christmas.
It's a tradition for me to read at least one book by Donna VanLiere every Christmas. This book was different because Christmas came at the end of the book. I loved the way the story led up to Christmas and the spirit of the season is certainly not missing. I got caught up in the story of both these families and thought the ending of the book bought closure.
If your read Christian Fiction and love the Author's books this story is for you. There are other books in this series that have the same characters. However I feel that the book can be read as a standalone. The meaning of the story will not be lost if read as a stand alone. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
I borrowed a copy of this book from my local Library. A review was not requested. All opinions expressed here are my own.

The Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere is one of many in a long line of Christmas themed books she has written over the years. I've read a few here and there not realizing that it was, more or less, a series. It is, however, one of those series that features a different person in each book so that you can read them as a stand alone feature. Some of the characters will be familiar if you have read her other books and some are newly introduced. Regardless, it is an endearing story featuring a dual timeline, the 1970s and 2012, a kitchen table and recipes that have been lovingly  written for someone's daughter. How the two timeline's merge and the importance of the table is beautifully told and intertwined. I loved the story, thought it was wonderfully and carefully written and enjoyed the recipes at the end of the tale.

I was not forewarned that VanLiere's books are Christian based and I think it is important to know this. There are many people who celebrate the holidays, Christmas, or who are religious but do not believe the same way as others. In this particular book it wasn't so overt that I felt uncomfortable, but I do wish these types of books were marked accordingly. That said, I did like the book and do recommend it for your holiday reading.

Newlywed Lauren finds a collection of handwritten recipe cards in the drawer of a refinished table she buys for her new kitchen. Each recipe has a tender, personal note from a mother to her daughter. Lauren teaches herself to cook using the recipes and begins searching for their rightful owner. The book alternates Lauren's story with flashbacks to the original owner and her family. The storylines converge at Christmas.

This is a sweet, short, faith-centered book with some delicious-sounding recipes and good dialogue. It would make a nice Christmas present for a cook, an expectant mom, or anyone who enjoys passing along treasured family recipes.

This book is not for readers looking for conflict, complexity, or mystery. All the characters are admirable; the antagonists are physical fragility and the struggle to have faith when bad things happen to good people. It would be more helpful for readers who want to try the recipes if all of them were collected at the end of the book, instead of only a selection of the many dishes described.

Many thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for the honest review.

A feel-good, faith-filled story of two woman, Joan and Lauren, and one homemade table. Joan’s husband made it for her in 1972; Lauren finds it in 2012, filled with recipes cards containing notes from a mother to a daughter. The dual timeline, which seems de rigueur these days, works well in The Christmas Table, especially as it poignantly ties the narrative together at the end. For readers who love simple inspiring stories of relationships, faith and giving. The latest in the Christmas Hope series by this NYT bestselling author.

Two families, separated by time and circumstance become connected through a simple kitchen table made with love for a wife and mother dying of cancer. Forty years later, a young wife, pregnant with her first child becomes the table’s new owner and discovers a hidden drawer filled with recipe cards filled with personal notes to someone’s daughter, someone who didn’t plan on being there to watch her grow.

Lauren is left wondering about the woman, the family and where they were now, knowing she must return these treasures of love. Spanning 1972 to 2012, the cards tell a beautiful tale of the love of a mother for her child and family. She is now determined more than ever to find this lost family, return the cards and thank them for the unwitting gift.

Donna VanLiere’s THE CHRISTMAS TABLE will melt even the coldest of hearts with the shining power of love and family. Beautiful, endearing and magical, this tale will leave readers better for reading it! (Not to mention a better cook, with the recipes at the end!)

This is my first Donna VanLiere book and I can see I've been missing out on a lot! The Christmas Table is the tenth book in The Christmas Hope series and, while it can definitely be read as a standalone, I did feel a bit overwhelmed at first with all the folks at Glory's Place. I got the distinct impression that their stories have been told in previous books. But I caught on to their quirks pretty quickly and I'm now hungering for more. Luckily, my library has the whole series so I've just put a bunch of them on hold. :-)

This shorter length novel packs an emotional punch as it embraces the true meaning of friendship and love and living in community with one another. And the way faith draws them all together. I got teary at the end.

And I loved the dual timeline aspect and the way the recipes almost write their own story. In fact, the author has included full recipes at the end of the book which is an added bonus.

A heartwarming faith and family feel-good holiday read.

The Christmas Table by Donna VanLiere is a lovely women's fiction story that kept me turning the pages throughout the afternoon.

The story is about two women, one in 1972 and one in 2012, and their lives as they experience life surrounded by family, friends, love and faith. Ms. VanLiere's writing is poignant and descriptive throughout the story. The plot is smooth and the characters develop organically and become people who I would love to call friends. The recipes shared between mother and daughter all sounded delicious and some of them were included at the end of the book. A Christmas story that links two women from different generations by a black walnut table and family recipes.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from St, Martin's Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

This book was such a delight to read. It is more than a Christmas story, it is two stories about families that are tied together but just don't know it....yet.  The book flips between 1972 and 2012 and centers around some recipe cards that were found in a table in 2012 that were written by the mom in 1972. Joan in 1972 and Lauren in 2012 learn how to cook with these recipe cards and the notes are very specific. This was a blessing for both women since they knew how to make the basics and these were more complicated recipes (somewhat). I have to say that my mouth was watering while reading the book.

This is the tenth book in a series and some of the other reviews that I have read mentioned that the characters flow from the various books. I think I could tell that in this book by Lauren's mention of her wedding and other details, but this book can easily be read as a standalone book. The author does a brilliant job of character development and I didn't feel like I was coming into the second act of a play and missing information.

While the story focuses on the women surrounding Lauren (in 2012) when she discovers she is pregnant and supporting her, there is also a little bit of a mystery on whose table this was that Lauren purchased with the recipe cards. She wants to give them back and a surprise twist will reunite her with the owner. The story in 1972 follows Joan who is battling breast cancer. This hit close to home since I am a breast cancer survivor myself. It also shares her family's response and you can see the love her husband has for her and wants her to keep fighting. Several members of the community come together to support the family especially spiritually.

All in all, this was a lovely book and I had a hard time putting it down. I will definitely take a look at some of her other books in the near future.  We give this book 5 paws up.

What a beautiful, heart-touching story! I almost wish this book was not listed as a “Christmas” story, because it’s a story that can be read at any time of the year. It takes a talented author to write a split-time story and have both timelines equally interesting. I loved Jean’s story, set in 1972, and her struggle to discover hope in difficult times. I equally loved Lauren’s story, set in 2012, and the hope she’s found in her faith. driends, and fami,y. As Lauren cooks her way through the recipe cards she found in an old table, she could never imagine the journey on which these cards will take her. Just have some tissues on hand when you read the last couple of chapters in this book. My heart was full when I finished the last page.

I didn’t get this book read before Christmas, but I had, it would have been in my top reading list for 2020. As it is, it was a great way to begin a new year of reading. Don’t miss this one!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Delightful!

What a joy to spend time with Lauren, Travis, Gloria, Miriam and other characters previously met in Grandon. Newlyweds Lauren and Travis learn they are expecting a child. "Grandmothers" Gloria and Miriam are delighted and immediately begin planning how to redo Lauren and Travis' home to prepare for their new addition. One item to be added is a kitchen table. This part of the story line takes place in 2012. The bickering between Gloria and Miriam provides just the right amount of humor.

The second part of the story occurs in 1972 and focuses on John and Joan Creighton. John is newly dabbling with woodworking as a hobby and decides to make a new kitchen table for his family. Joan soon learns she has breast cancer. Watching their love grow stronger and discover faith in God was beautiful. There were several times where strangers cross paths with the Creightons and have a profound impact on one or both of them. "God doesn't waste any opportunities."

Get the tissue ready for the final pages. What a fabulous ending. Another Christmas tale beautifully written by the talented Donna VanLiere.

My gratitude to publisher St. Martin's Press for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

「❝They're not just recipes. They are family stories and memories.❞」

This book made me hungry.
Very hungry.

The Christmas Table is filled with stories of people, hardworking people. These people have such a tight knit community, and honestly this series is so cute all together.

𝓑𝓾𝓽...... It lacks the depth I'm used to.
This is like my 5th or 6th book in this series (yes I'm reading them somewhat out of order based on availability) and all of them have had outstanding plots. All of them have amazing characters and I can definitely see that VanLiere can really get into her characters heads, but it's almost as if she's never heard of show not tell. One of the blessings of reading is that you get to create these worlds in your heads, and that these people called authors basically give you the outlines and instructions. The beauty of books is where words stop and the brain fills.
VanLiere constantly is spoon feeding us details and writing things like he thought or his dark blue eyes with the dark brown hair turned around and he nodded his head.
Now I don't want to be negative in anyway bc I do rly enjoy her plots, but I'm just missing the depth of the words. But seriously A++ on plots.

𝓦𝓮 follow two different years back and forth (which is done beautifully and I never felt confused at all) between a sweet couple who when close to fire only grows stronger which is so, so, so inspiring to see, and a newly wed couple. I LOVED the cooking and food related themes (I borrowed a Sam's Club copy which actually includes some of the recipes 😋 ) and it showed the absolute beauty and connection that food and family create.

「Overall, I enjoy the series but I wish there was a bit more depth to the writing. But I want to thank Mrs. VanLiere for her work bc I'm very much enjoying the plots of these deep end, hea, family, and community stories」

Content: 0.5/5
TWs: The battles of a loved one with cancer, lacking a relationship with parents bc they weren't there for their children and ended up in foster care
Age recommendation: Anyone 14+ could enjoy this (There's nothing content wise but the older you are the more you would appreciate the family and family building aspects)

In 1972, John is building a kitchen table for his wife Joan. Meanwhile, in 2012, Lauren and Travis acquire the table and can't help but wonder why such a lovely handmade gift was given away. Will Lauren be able to find the table's original owners?

Since I hadn't read the previous books in this series, I felt a little lost at the beginning with so many characters making an appearance but focusing on the four main characters helped tremendously. This story sure sounded like something I would love... Christmas, woodworking, handwritten recipes, expectant parents, etc ... but unfortunately, it was not the book for me. It was a light, sweet, faith-filled story, but without including spoilers, let's just say that I found the premise and plot points weak and too coincidental.

I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Every once in a while, I read a book which just happens to be the most perfect read for what’s happening in my life at that time. The Christmas Table is story of love, family and community with a message of keeping faith during some of our darkest hours. It really is just what I needed.

This book is the tenth in a series but can be read easily as a standalone. It is told in two time frames - 1972 and 2012 and surrounds the importance of a family table originally built by John Creighton for his wife Joan. John has never really built anything, but promises to build Joan a table for their young family in time for Thanksgiving. Inspired by John’s creativity, Joan decides to use the recipe cards her mother has given her and learns to cook and bake, with her children alongside her making memories. Her progress slows when she begins a courageous battle, fighting breast cancer.

The second story is of Lauren and her husband Travis who are expecting a child of their own. Lauren purchases a refinished table second hand and discovers recipe cards within its drawer. Feeling a need to learn to cook, she uses the recipe cards to teach herself and enjoys her success in creating delicious meals. She feels the love and stories behind each recipe, and determines the need to return the recipe cards to their rightful owner. The challenge of finding the owner is one that proves to be quite difficult.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how the two stories were intertwined as well as the sense of community felt by reading the book. I was touched by the support that the men, in particular, gave each other What stood out to me the most, however, was the spiritual message that was spoken by several of the characters in this book which helped maintain their focus during difficult times. What more can I say? This is an absolutely beautiful and moving story and one that I am sure to remember for years to come.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for the honest review provided here.
