Move: How the New Science of Body Movement Can Set Your Mind Free

Rate this book
*Shortlisted for Sunday Times Book of the Year *
*A Greater Good Science Center Best Book of 2022*

An eye-opening journey into the power of human movement and how we can harness it to optimize our brain health, boost our mood and improve every aspect of our lives

For our earliest ancestors who hunted and gathered, movement meant survival. Our brains evolved to reward physical activity. Moving, thinking and feeling have always been inextricably linked.

Yet what happens when we stop moving? Today, on average, we spend around 70 percent of our lives sitting or lying completely still. Our sedentary lifestyle—desk jobs, long commutes and lots of screen time—is not only bad for our bodies. It can also result in anxiety, depression and a lower overall IQ.

But there's good news. Even the simplest movements can reactivate our bodies and open up a hotline to our minds, improving our overall well-being and longevity. And we don't have to spend countless hours in the gym. In fact, exercise as we understand it misses the point.

Veteran science journalist Caroline Williams explores the cutting-edge research behind brain health and physical activity, interviewing scientists from around the world to completely reframe our relationship to movement. Along the way she reveals easy tricks that we could all use to improve our memory, maximize our creativity, strengthen our emotional literacy and more. A welcome counterpoint to the current mindfulness craze, Move offers a more stimulating and productive way of freeing our caged minds to live our best lives.

This book presents a pop science accounting of some of the more interesting scientific literature on the benefits of moving one’s body – be it through dance, martial arts, walking, or otherwise. That being active is an important element of maintaining a healthy mind and body will come as no surprise. Still, there are a number of specific points this book makes that may come as a surprise to many, such as that those who do an hour of intense exercise a day but otherwise live desk warrior lives may not be as well off as they think.

As the topic (and the scientific literature from which the book draws) is huge, the author focuses specifically on the mental benefits of physical movement, both attitudinal / psychological benefits and cognitive benefits such as improved creative thinking or memory. I found the book’s organization to be beneficial, and – in particular – believe it was a smart move to include chapters on breath and rest – topics that are integral to a life of movement, but which might not spring to mind. Particularly, the chapter on breath discusses findings on synchronization of breath and movement more than does many books on breath or movement, as well as offering extensive discussion of the benefits of 3 and 6 breath per minute (bpm) breathing.

There are a lot of books out there on this subject – though usually they focus either on exercise or on a particular approach to movement. Those who read extensively on the topic may not find much that is new in this book. However, I think “Move” holds its own, and also distinguishes itself in some of its fine points of emphasis. Certainly, if one is looking for a book to introduce someone to the benefits of movement, this is a prudent choice.

At last, I got to read a non-fiction book that was not about the author but the subject. It was heavy on the science at times, but after several pseudo-memoirs I've read this year, it was more than welcome. The book's main idea is the importance of movement to our physical and mental health and how we can improve the latter by moving more. The book was not about vigorous exercise or going to the gym every day but about everyday movement, walking, dancing, and core exercise that are more natural to us than crunches, etc. The claims are backed by scientific research, so this is not a book about miraculous cures or spiritual practices (although they mention yoga, meditation, and other practices where research has been conducted). Also, there is a summary of how this information could be implemented in your life after each chapter and at the end of the book.

I listened to the audiobook edition, but it isn't on here yet. The narrator was very good, clear and confident.

Interesting. Helpful information, easily digested advice. None of the information is new but this book brings it together in one place for the non-specialist to understand. I particulalry liked the sound of 'natural movement'.

Very neurotypical, bit sniffy about neurodivergent people (stop describing us as disordered!), and doesn't take into account sociological factors of mental illness and distress, puts it all down to not moving enough.

There's lots of anecdotal and scientific evidence that elevates the connection between mind and body--essentially raising the question of whether they are separate (as Global North cultures like the US often insist through discourse and policy). Williams grabs hold of this consideration and reframes our thinking, offering that our brains evolved in relation to humankind's ability to move and be active in particular ways (on our feet, interval activity throughout the day, moving in natural ways that reflect the life of a hunter-gathering life, etc). The book then proceeds through different types of movement (aerobic exercise, muscle building, breathing, rest, stretching, etc) to explore what the current scientific studies have to say about how these impact and relate to our state of mind (from mental health to alertness to creativity to focus). The result is boiled down to simple considerations: movement on our feet, using our weight or natural movements to build strength and finding ways to engage our ligaments and such through particular types of stretching, and nose-breathing at different rates that feel entirely actionable throughout one's day. In this way, I really like what Williams provides--a guide to increasing movement, enhancing our relationship with our bodies, and emergent ways our bodies work with our minds for better outcomes. Where I'm a little more skeptical or feel like there is a gap is when it comes to people with different bodies. Taken too seriously, the book leaves open a suggestion that those with less mobility are less capable. It's not explicit but in the absence of any real discussion of different body types (besides young and old), it feels a bit silent.

An extensively researched but highly accessible read, which tells us all what we know deep down: that our sedentary lifestyles are damaging our health. This book does not tell you to join a gym but instead provides sensible advice about incorporating different ways of moving into everyday life. It ends with an action plan that anyone could follow. It left me motivated to make changes to my daily activities. I can't recommend it highly enough.

🌻Suprakaituoti
🌻Šokti, šokinėti (net jeigu šiaip sau kelis kart pastriksėt)
🌻Muzikos ritmas (120 dūžių per minutę)
🌻Tempimo pratimai (nepersistengt man)
🌻Fascija (judėjimas kuo įvairiau)
🌻Lankstumas
🌻Kvėpavimas per nosį (6 įkvėpt iškvėpt per min. 5 sek.

Okay wow - fabulous. This is my favorite ~wellness/self help/educational book I think I’ve ever read. Williams does an excellent job presenting scientific information in a very accessible way. (As such, students of human biology and folks who have a deeper understanding of the mind body connection may be less enamored, but STILL)

Not only is the material distilled effectively for the layman, but also it is presented in a way that provides key, actionable takeaways. Huge win for the little people! Love!

Not to toot my own horn, but I also found this entire book very validating. I’m a huge stickler on steps, but I never truly understood ~why~~ walking is so important. Now I’m like heck yeah. Dance parties? LOVE EM. Partake in them regularly. Had no clue they were so crucial to our mental wellbeing. Core work to slow aging? Cool. Count me already in. Mindful movement? Breath work? This somehow both knocked my socks off and legitimized my entire existence.

Idk yall, I had a cup of coffee today and I don’t usually drink caffeine so we are rippin’ in this review.

I especially loved the deep dive on fascia because I vaguely remember learning about the benefits of stretching and twisting during the anatomy portion of my corepower training, and this was an important and again, validating callback. Similarly, this is the first time I’ve come across a discussion of heart rate variability (HRV) outside of my oura ring experience. That specifically was very exciting because I’ve asked my primary care physician about his thoughts on HRV, and the dude was a wet blanket with absolutely no discernible knowledge on the topic and certainly no insights to share.

Anyway, I truly already want to read this again because I have a strong and totally unrealistic desire to retain literally every single tidbit and factoid shared.

Xoxo if you made it this far, read the book. Love you. Mean it.

Found this guide to movement incredibly helpful as I look to restart an exercise routine. Encourages readers with its compelling examples of how movement aids our brain, boosts mood, and impacts everyday life. The author, a seasoned science journalist, reveals how much is needed and what we can do to truly feel better and live with more ease. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to feel better daily!

Thanks to the author, Harlequin Trade Publishing, Hanover Square Press, and NetGalley for the ARC; opinions are mine.

All in all a very easy to read and understand account of why we all need to move more. Not a lot I didn’t know and learn from my rheumatologist but it was good to reinforce some of the facts. And if you’re interested in more there is an extensive list of notes at the end. I did like the closing line “Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a dance party about to start in my kitchen” I guess she’s listening to Bowie ⚡️

It was fine. It didn’t need to be as long as it was. The introduction said that moving is important for your health and being still is bad. The rest of the book felt unnecessary after that point because it just reiterated it for the rest of the book. It reminded of research survey papers as it seems that its value may lie in all of the studies the author grouped together. Also, there were many instances where she told us conclusions and then said that the science hasn’t yet proven or understood whether it’s true or not yet. I could’ve done without the speculation.

A great book on the importance of taking care of our body through, walking/running, strength training, dance, posture, stretching, breathing, and rest. The book did a good job providing research on how each of these can have a huge impact physiologically as well as psychologically. Each chapter ends with some nice bullet points on action items you can take to start utilizing these in your daily life.

The book hit me on a personal level too since I've really felt the importance of movement over the years through each of the topics mentioned. So it was nice to read about all the different benefits these activities can have, some of which I was completely unaware of. Overall a great book I'd recommend to anyone since the benefits can be life changing.

If you are interested in movement/human science/health or need a reason to get active this one is for you! As a very big movement & anatomy nerd this was everything I needed and wanted, a very human and realistic look at how we can use our bodies to have a healthier life! my only down side is I just find it so hard to pick up non-fiction, this was so interesting but I did really have to make myself read it which I feel I wouldn’t have to do with a 5 starer? (But definitely read this) !!!

Caroline Williams"
"A welcome counterpoint to the current mindfulness craze"

Fascinating look at how movement affects our brains and how we process emotion. This is not a book about modern exercise. This book address evolutionary biology, primate evolution, human hunting and gathering movement patterns and what the simple act of asking our bones to bare weight does for hormone production and emotional states. Additional chapters about dancing, core activation, stretching our connective tissue and breathing. I appreciate the authors thorough review of scientific studies and due skepticism of certain alternative practices (but spoiler alert, yoga is amazing for your brain). I came away with a lot of new knowledge and some practical tips that I plan to implement to move in ways that benefit my brain.

I have been looking for a succinct book about movement for a long time now. Others have often included pseudo-science, wellness culture, or alternative medicine bullshit. This one is a straight to the point book talking about different areas of movement, the science behind it and how it it beneficial (or not so much) for us.

We all know movement is good, but being reminded of it, with a bit of background knowledge, was fun.
So here the gist, as we all know already:
Walk, use gravity, learn survival skills (e.g. swim, jump, climb), do rhythmic movements, belly laugh, stretch a little bit, breathe, focus on how your body feels, let your mind wander, trust yourself, ever stop learning, and more.

In a shocking twist, I actually finished this book.. it only took me 1.5 years! I’m still giving it 5 stars since I found it to be super fascinating to read about the science behind how movement positively affects the body and mind. The main takeaway is that exercising once a day isn’t really what it’s about and focusing on low level movement throughout the day has a much more profound effect on overall health. If you like reading about scientific studies that explain the why behind things that are presented as fact to us (why walking and meditation are good), then this is the book for you!

Basic to a fault. The author collected a lot of research but doesn’t do much interpretation of it, and many of the studies were one-offs or early investigations that had conclusions along the lines of “doing X *could* improve outcomes by a small percentage, although more information is needed.” The main messages were just exercise more, calm your mind, and get better sleep. This is nothing new to anyone (although I guess if you wanted an annotated bibliography on the related research, this might be a good starting point).
