When James Alatook was six years old, his parents went on a voyage to the Forbidden Isle and never returned. Nine years later, he’s following their footsteps by joining the Valagoo, the pirate fleet his parents belonged to before their disappearance. Instead of making them proud, he and his best friend are rejected by Governor Grimaldi, leader of the Valagoo, during the Assignment Ceremony in Widow’s Square. With his future stripped away from him, James decides to do the defy the Valagoo and start his own fleet with the other rejected teenagers from Widow’s Square. The band of misfits leave Horseshoe Bay and commandeer the first ship they find. James’s story takes a mysterious turn when he discovers the ship is actually Aringold Wind; the magical vessel his parents disappeared on nine years earlier; the one Governor Grimaldi claimed to never have returned. It’s clear he’s been lied to his whole life, but can he and his crew evade Governor Grimaldi’s noose long enough to discover the answers he’s searching for? With all the pirate clans in Estes seeking Grimaldi’s reward for their heads, a magical ship might not be enough to survive.
To describe this work as solely a nice adventure story for young adults is reductive. While I do think it will capture the curiosity and passion of many younger readers, the plot and its underlying themes really resound of what it means to form a fellowship, not a mere friendship, but a group of people who will live, suffer, rejoice together and fight for one another until death. I recommend this book to anyone who knows what it’s like to be searching for a cause, for meaning, and ultimately for a driving force for life. The story of James echoes that of many human beings across the centuries, and is very relatable. Plus it’s about pirates and supernatural powers, which is awesome to say the least. We hope this is the beginning of many more adventures for the Javelin Fleet. Thank you to the author.
