Beneath Black Sails #3

Under Black Skies

Rate this book
Enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies. Now they’re ‘just friends.’ Sure.

Reunited with her crew, Vice is on the hunt for Drake’s treasure. But there’s a good reason it hasn’t been seen in two hundred years – it’s hidden by fiendish clues and deadly traps. To keep her crew – her family safe, she can’t afford a single misstep. That’s easier said than done with a distraction like Knigh Blackwood around.

Knigh might not sail for the Navy anymore, but he’s found a new place in the world – home with Vice on the Venatrix. Even as he longs for more than ‘just friends’, he battles with demons from his past and one from his present. To save his family, he needs money. Lots of it. A legendary treasure would be the perfect solution.

But traps and troublesome feelings aren’t the only dangers they face. When treachery strikes at the heart of pirate-kind, no one is safe: not their home, not Knigh’s family, not even the Pirate Queen herself.

If you love the banter of From Blood and Ash and the steamy romance of A Court of Silver Flames, you’ll love this new adult fantasy series that fans are calling sexy and intense.

Download UNDER BLACK SKIES today and set sail on an adventure where tentacles lurk in the deep, half a map leads the way, and even treasure isn’t what it seems.

-----------------------------

As you might expect from pirates, these stories include moderate cussing and steamy scenes.

Clare Sager writes darkly addictive romantasy full of slow-burn steam, gut-wrenching conflict, and morally grey *everybody*. Dubbed the Queen of Edging by readers, she takes no responsibility for lost sleep or therapy bills.

When she’s not breaking hearts with her Shadows of the Tenebris Court series, Clare can usually be found drinking coffee, lifting weights, or impulse-buying stationery.

She lives in Nottingham, Robin Hood country, so it’s no surprise she writes about characters who don’t always play by the rules.

This book is as fast-paced and addictive as the previous books. I am so happy that I decided to give this series a chance! I am loving it! I also recommend reading the prequel before diving into the series as some elements of this book and the previous one are linked to what happens in Across Dark Seas.

This book picks up right after the end of Against Dark Tides, as Perry's crew is on the hunt for Drake's legendary treasure. As in the previous books, this one is full of swashbuckling adventure, magic, and pirates. The hunt for the treasure and the relationship between Vee and Knigh is one aspect of the plot, but there is also a political angle in this book, as some pirates are teaming up with Mercia, and even going so far as to attack and betray other pirates.

“Everyone leaves,” she muttered, so quietly, it might’ve been to herself rather than him. “They leave, they die, or they let you down. I know that. I know.”
His heart shrivelled. Oh, Vee. He fastened both hands around the cup to keep them from her.

Vee continues to change and mature in this book. I admit that it annoyed me a little bit when Vee was scared of showing true emotions and so afraid to be left behind, but at the same time I can understand where it comes from, and it makes her more human. We are so used to seeing the snarky Lady Vice that never lets herself feel any "weak" emotions, it was nice to see that she was human and just as vulnerable as anyone else under all her bluntness.

Comfortable ease and physical tension—a strange contradiction. That was the only way to describe working with Vee.

I admit that while I enjoyed the sexual tension between Vee and Knigh, I was not sure if I would like this whole "let's just be friends" plan, but I was impressed. They get a chance to "start over", and to build back their relationship slowly and on stronger bases. There is a lot of personal growth and because of that, a lot of growth in their relationship too. I need to say though that while I enjoyed the angstier aspect of their relationship, a part of me was so frustrated to see how they could have saved themselves many headaches and frustration if they'd just communicated a little more clearly...

Knigh was so obviously in love with Vee, but he kept telling himself "That's never gonna happen. How could she ever forgive me and want to be more than a friend after I betrayed her?". On the other side, Vee was longing for Knigh, but thinking to herself "Oh, but how could he ever want to spend more time with me after he fled the Navy and his whole life just to save me?". Again, not enough communication because it was obvious to everyone that they were head over heels for each other, except for them. While I enjoyed the angst it added to the series, it got a little repetitive near the middle, but the pace picked up soon after, and the book as a whole was still an amazing read.

“You know what would keep her away?”
Vee raised an eyebrow. “Tell her you have syphilis?”
“Wow. That took a dark turn.(…)”

The sass and banter between Vee and Knigh were cute and funny. It added a few lighter moments amidst all the heavy sexual tension, life-threatening quest, betrayal, fighting, and deep personal questioning. I like that they were able to keep this lighter side of their relationships despite the fact that they clearly both want to be more than friends.

“Yes, Aedan. She’s my sister. And I’m telling you to back off.”
Aedan lifted his hand defensively, the other cradling his food. “Hey, I thought you respected women, including their decisions. If your sister were to decide—”
Knigh laughed and shook his head. “Oh, my friend, you misunderstand. I say back off not as her brother, but as your friend. She would run rings around you.”

Knigh and Aedan’s friendship was a cute little bonus to the story. It was cute to see them bonding and being able to laugh and have each other's back despite the rocky start they had in the first 2 books of the series.

Captain Fitzroy is still a part of the plot, and for some reason, he is starting to grow on me?! I am not exactly sure how it happened, but I don't really hate him anymore. I am not saying that he's a good person or that he's my new favorite character, but he somewhat redeemed himself in this book, and I am curious to see how his character will develop in the next book.

There is a surprising addition to the cast of this book (for a too-brief moment), and we finally get to really meet Lady Isabel, Knigh's sister. She appears as a fragile and demure flower, but she is strong-willed, honest, and not afraid to speak her mind and go after what she wants. I really hope to see more of her in the next book. One strength of this series is the large cast of brave, strong, and brilliant women.

That ending. I am so glad that the fourth book is released and that I don't have to wait before reading it because that ending is a little bit cruel. This series is a great adventure full of romance, naval fights, and a deadly scavenger hunt, but there it's also about people learning to accept their flaws and work on them, coming to terms with their past, and trying to become the best version of themselves.

Chapters 39, 40 and 57 were 🔥🔥🔥

But no seriously the first half of chapter 39 was so raw and genuine. Vee was so brave to show her vulnerability and true feelings and I command her for that. 👏

I am so proud of Vice. She's growing! She's embracing her "soft emotions!" She's delegating! Look at her go.

In Under Black Skies, we find Ni and Vice, but not together. No, they're "just friends." Yep, just friends. Vice is totally not pining after Ni, and Ni is totally not losing his mind over Vice. The good news is the two have plenty to distract themselves with. They are closer than ever to Drake's treasure; treasure that hasn't been found in 200 years. Yet, there are still quite a few clues that need to be solved. And Vice's walls just might tart tumbling down in the process.

All right. Clare, how do you do it? These two have literally gone from enemies, to allies, to lovers, to enemies, to friends, to secret lovers? And it all works? HOW?

The Beneath Black Sails books just get better and better as you go on, and Under Black Skies is no different. We have such a delicate, but skillful handling of past trauma and dealing with the frustration of forward movement and growth not happening as fast as we want. For Ni, it's learning to get a handle on his temper and remain in control while fighting. For Vice, it's slowly learning that the potential pain is worth the happiness of allowing herself to open up. She is definitely becoming self-aware, and I love seeing her genuinely try to be better. Ugh! It's so good.

Overall, I love it here. I love the character growth, I love the mystery and clever pirate clues and traps, I love all the kittens! Amazing.

Leave these pirates lost at sea!

I DNF at 41%. I really never thought I'd say it but there is such a thing as too slow burning of a romance. Every single action Vice & Knigh make towards one another is second guessed ad nauseum. There will be a LITERAL chapter of 5 - 6 pages from her POV, followed by the same from his POV, as they both analyse & over analyse every single interaction they have. It's unreadable. I made it to 41% but probably skimmed or skipped over at least half of that. The villain, Mercia, is the most interesting character but at nearly the halfway point he has yet to make an appearance. Meanwhile, the author has taken the idea of showing rather than telling to unprecedented extremes. She shows absolutely everything. It is obnoxious & boring. I don't need a 3 page breakdown from Vice everytime Knigh says something flirtatious. I was trying to stick it out because I was mildly interested in the mysterious treasure they've been attempting to find, but after days of dreading having to slog through this drivel, I decided I had to put it aside. I won't be reading the final book, either. I just don't know how the same author that wrote the prequel story about how Avice became Lady Vice-- which was gripping, character driven, action packed, I adored it & was so excited to read more-- also wrote this painful slog through the minds of two characters who just need to get together already. This isn't a slow burn. It's a burnt roast. I am so turned off by the endless pages of the main characters' ridiculous, repetitive thoughts. At this point I would actually enjoy the book more if they went their separate ways & fell in love with someone else. Life is too short & my TBR list too full of books that might actually be entertaining, for me to continue to waste my time with this utter crap. If you like a slow burn romance so slow that you no longer care if they fall for each other, so slow that they both must be utter idiots who overthink absolutely everything & never accomplish anything outside of analysing every single thing each other says, then maybe this book is for you. I wouldn't recommend it. And I doubt I will be reading anything else by this author, either. It is rare for a book to turn me off so thoroughly when I'm halfway through a series, but for my own sanity I can't take it anymore!

All of the struggle, and betrayal, and turmoil, and separation, and HISTORY that Vice and Knigh have together have lead to this moment. Their relationship is one of the most complicated romances I've ever read, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I was a little concerned about how much I would enjoy this book after the two main characters decided to be "just friends". Admittedly friends to lovers is my least favorite trope. However, my fears were completely unfounded with Under Black Skies. The growth that their relationship undergoes is absolutely wonderful. Their progression is slow, but not in an annoying way. It was natural and beautiful to witness. The take that this story gives us on fated mates is refreshing. Sure Vice and Knigh are supposed to be together, I can see that, you can see that, EVERYONE can see that.

But, I dare to ask you, which version of themselves is supposed to be with the other? The younger version of Vice, Lady Avice Ferrers? When she was young, miserable with her station in life and the expectations put upon her. Or maybe the freshly appointed Lady Vice? Who was on a single minded quest to prove her worth and value. Which iteration of our FMC is supposed to be with Knigh? Sure they could have been married at 18 and avoided all of the drama that has happened to them in the last few books. But that version of Vice and Knigh would be vastly different from the version of Vice and Knigh we have now. All of the history they have with one another, the good and the bad, equally contribute to an unshakable bedrock foundation for a relationship that will last a lifetime.

Sager manages to weave a beautiful tale of love and redemption while also giving us a world that is rich and vibrant. The overall story line of this latest installment of the Beneath Black Sails series is a fast paced, action packed read that will have you flipping pages until the very end. At which point you'll undoubtedly throw the book across the room and curse the author's name while simultaneously begging for the next book. Buckle up mateys, you're in for a wild ride!

This book follows directly on from Against Dark Tides (book 2), and I absolutely loved it!

I sobbed so many times reading this, and loved every minute of it.

I adored the enemies to lovers to enemies to 'just friends', world-building, magic, found family, adventure, treasure hunting, deliciously steamy romance, and epic sea battles.

I loved how the characters started to come to terms with their pasts and find their place in the world.

This gave me an epic book hangover that took me days to recover from — highly recommend!

really? DNF

Three books deep and vee - the main character - still , STILL can’t admit she has feelings for Knigh. Are you for real?
That is so boring. So unbelievably boring and annoying to read which is why half way through when I realized there is literally NO change or growth or anything I just started flipping pages and skimming.

To then be not shocked at all when nothing else had happened.

The “adventure” part of this story is also a drag. Three hooks deep and it’s on repeat. Get stolen by the navy. Find a clue. No closer to the treasure. Repeat.
Add in really broken conversation which makes no sense. Imagine that every sentence you spoke you stopped half way through then said nothing as you spaced out and had 15deep thoughts to then change the conversation all together.

It makes no sense and it’s stupid.

If after three books your main character is still too stupid to realize she has feeling for the other character and even tells her friend yeah go sleep with him then I’m out. That’s next level

As promised, this story brings back the adventure and intrigue, and reduces the angst by about half. There are many clever twists and turns, including some fun with the fae-magic. The required repairing of the relationship between the H and h is well done, with a good amount of soul-searching and soul-baring. There are a few angsty bits, but they are not overwhelming as in book #2.

The only downside is that I inferred that this would be the end of the trilogy, but there's one more book to go. This feels like a shaggy dog story at times, but I'm enjoying the ride.

WHAT THE F- WAS THAT?!

You are an evil genius for doing this to me, Clare Sager.

Before adding anything else I just wanna say Knigh Blackwood deserves all the dreamy sigh. *cue swoon*

I know I don't say it enough so I'm saying it again- I'm OBSESSED with these books! Pirates, swashbuckling adventure and excitement, monsters, magic, swoony romance (it's steamy just sayin'), lovable cast of characters, and an adventure-filled treasure hunt... what more could you ask for? Under Black Skies has it all!

I don't know why but I was a bit scared for a moment there with Saba. I'm still feeling meh about FitzRoy but he's (really) slowly growing on me. I think it was great to see Billy again. Perry's still my favorite. Barnacle (and kittens) equals ADORABLE! And I still think we don't get enough of Knigh playing guitar. I. need. more.

I'm gonna try not to say too much to avoid spoiling anything but I love how the author handled Vice and Knigh's relationship. Suffice it to say, it has gone a long way from that first meeting in the ball when there were still a lot of lies and secrets and deception between them. They have both grown so much (individually and together) and it shows. Ugh, I LOVE these two! <3

One thing this installment proves? Clare Sager always delivers. I have so much love for this series!

Give me book four!

"She was sunshine, even here in such a bright, bright place."

"Even if his answer might be no. Because the chance it could be yes was worth the risk."

"Each part of him pulled towards her, like he was a compass point and she was north. Did that make her his course, his guiding point?"

The story continues and we finally see some exponential growth! But then suddenly she regresses back to not telling about feelings. Why does every writer has to stoop to this to be able to create an interesting story? Yes a character can make a mistake but when they take a step forward why then do they suddenly have to go 15 steps backwards again? This is it how growth and lessons work. You have the knowledge so you use it as it gets better results. This is something that irks me soo much. Like just write the story and attribute it to flaws and not make it drag just because you want a few more chapters extra. This book felt as it could have been twice less pages and still have told the core story.
Also the fight with her crewmate about the supplies was unnecessary and downright mean. Also her other friend/crewmate who wanted to have her love interest was such a red flag man!

I have read every book in the series thus far. I enjoyed the story. The way that the author described the characters, ships and islands, I could picture what everything and everyone looked like. The only part of the books that I didn't care for were the sex scenes. Thankfully they were brief and only one or two per book. But overall I love the story of Vee and Knigh's love. I am hoping that the next book will be coming out shortly as this book is left on a cliffhanger.

I volunteered a honest review in exchange for an ARC copy of this book!

Loved the book! Sager has created a lush world and great characters. The action is exciting and the heat between Knigh and Vee is yummy. The book does end on a cliffhanger, but I am looking forward to the next. Can't wait!!

Set sail on an adventure with Knigh and Vice as they work together with the crew to find Drake's treasure. At Book 3 of the Beneath Black Sails series, I have come to the realization that Clare Sager loves to torment me with insane sexual tension. The author explains SO well how the characters are feeling and the mental hardships they fight within. I really felt like I came to understand Knigh and Vice 10x more and I'm waiting for their happily ever after.

This series just keeps getting better and better with every single book.

The adventure, the romance, the TENSION - especially in this third installment. Oh man, 'just friends' has never been dripping with so much yearning. You're in each of the main duo's heads (Vice and Knigh), so you as a reader know damn well how much they both want it, but you also know they each have their own reasons for holding back.

But the steam comes eventually, and when it rains, it pours! This was the absolute best I've read from Clare in terms of erotic romance, and she'd already set a ridiculously high bar in book one with that damn cave chapter (which I STILL read from time to time...).

There was so much to love in this book. The character development was insane, the romance swoon-worthy, and of course, the fantasy pirate ventures galore. Vice and Knigh each soar to new heights with their fae powers, unlocking hidden secrets not even they knew they had, and like any feel-good story, discover they're strongest together.

...but that ENDING! I both want to scream and cry about where it left me, but it did its job - anyone who gets that far will have no choice but to go on to the fourth and final book. I cannot wait to see where Clare ends this series, though honestly, I'm not sure I'm ready to leave Vice and Knigh behind...

Lady Vice and Knigh Blackwood are back at it searching for Drake's lost treasure in the third installment of the Beneath Black Sails series.

Clare Sager has made us go through so many emotions from enemies to lovers to friends - ugh and then this cliffhanger ending! The emotional rollercoaster that Vice rides is genuine and heartbreaking. Knigh manages his own demons and society expectations after finding a new place amongst a pirate crew. I adore Perry's sage advice to both of them, especially about Vice choosing joy. The characters have continued to grow since the beginning though growth isn't always linear. Loved the addition of Knigh's family, and as always Barnacle and the kittens. Clare Sager is the queen of sassy inner dialogue that feels genuine and relatable! We both cannot wait for the final installment in the Beneath Black Sails series.

I asked my husband to help me write this review, since he's read it too! Everytime I pass Andrew a book, he asks if it's about pirates.

My husband's concise review is as follows:
"It's an excellent piratical adventure. Read it."

Book 1 was still the best so far.

Most of this book was more of Vice struggling with her emotions and feelings for Knigh. Of course we can explore character feelings, but ad nauseum? Book 2 was all her feelings (or refusal to acknowledge her feelings). Now most of book 3 too?

Maybe I was just soured after book 2, but this book just didn't hold my interest as much as book 1 did. Found myself skimming after about 50%. There was way too much circular thinking and repeated thoughts. For the content, this book could have been under 300 pages instead of ~450. Too much filler for no reason.

And what's with FitzRoy? He orchestrates the capture of Vice in book 1, is utterly remorseless about it up until this book (supposedly), and that's it? I'm with Knigh on this one - why did Knigh practically get his head bit off over the betrayal but Fitz pretty much gets away scot-free (he was her captain for 3 years vs knowing Knigh for months)? Fitz is the man who said "I wonder what it's like to see a woman I've bedded hanged" and antagonized Vice while she was imprisoned. Are we just supposed to forget that happened? Also, what happened to his reward for her capture (lands, riches) - he just goes back to being a pirate immediately with no repercussions? And what happened with his co-conspirator, Bricus?

Such a shame. I love Clare's Fae/fantasy books! I've read the standalone ones, and plan to start A Kiss of Iron soon. Perhaps this is just a symptom of her first series and her writing got better?

I'll start by saying I received a free ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. So we're back at it again with more Knigh and Vice. They're inching closer and closer to Drake's treasure, sought after by pirates for centuries and promised to be of value beyond comprehension. They're also struggling with their feelings, after hurting each other in all kinds of ways they've decided it's best if they're just friends. Cause that always works out well for people with that kind of chemistry.

You can definitely see the character growth in both Knigh and Vice. In book one I wasn't sure how their relationship was going to work with all of their separate traumas and inabilities to commit but they're really pulling through. I love the romance because neither of them is satisfied to let the other be unhappy and they're so good at acknowledging when the other is suffering. They're getting so much better at knowing one another and pushing themselves to be better about it. Yet they're also simultaneously both so ignorant of their own issues which is the perfect combination for angst.

My only criticism would be the back and forth being a bit heavy towards the middle. They rehashed their feelings so many times that it felt a little repetitive. That's definitely not a bad thing for everyone, but I think compared to the last book I was just expecting a lot more pirate action. I do understand that there are four books in this series though and we can't just rush into a whole war and everything. I think that the ending also made up for some of the middle that I struggled through.

Now I don't want to spoil anything because I definitely think this whole series is worth the read but I will say I feel GUTTED by that ending. I didn't know I was signing up for a top tier cliffhanger but I did ask for the angst so I don't know what I expected. I'm very excited to see how everything gets pulled together in the finale (I'm pretty sure this is a four book series but I could be wrong). If you're a fan of fantasy, romance, pirates, or fae, this series really just has it all and should be on your shelf ASAP.

Oh yeah even with the great romance and all the pirate battles, my favorite characters are probably Barnacles and her whole squad and I demand more page-time for them.

I loved this book, LOVED it! I adore Vee, even though I want to shake some sense into her at times. But I think that’s the beauty of Clare Sager’s writing - she gives us these amazing, badass but ultimately flawed heroines that we can relate to, get angry at, laugh with, break our hearts alongside and feel their journey genuinely and with complete investment.

This is the third instalment and whilst I (and everyone else) can see, Vee and Knigh belong together, they decide to be just Friends. I adored how their relationship progressed and I just wanted more all the way through the book.

Without giving too much away, this is gorgeous tale of love (all types of love as the relationships between the rest of the characters and familial bonds that have been built are beautifully done too) and redemption.

Lastly, hello?! What was that ending????? I read this when it first came out and even now that ending is as shocking now as it was the first time and this time I don’t have to wait for months for the next book (this was a killer!)

This is the third book in the series and you will want to read the first ones in order to fully enjoy it. In case you’re reading this review before those, I will do my best to avoid spoilers but really, stop reading this and go read those books!

Following characters from the first books, Vice and Knigh we see their relation go into even more twists and turns. There are also other characters from the previous books as this one takes up just after the previous one.

This adventure story has romance, a quest for treasure, battles, magic, swashbuckling and more. It’s fast-paced and the plot is well-developed. The only downside for me was the cliffhanger ending.
I really enjoy the writing style. The descriptions has me smelling the high seas and feeling the wind in my face. The dialogue is great fun too.

I read an ARC of this book and have chosen to review it.

Whereas the second installment was more slow in the romance part of the story, since both mais characters were hurt and undergoing so many changes in status and living situations this one takes the wreckage and builds it up beautifully! Lots of adventure, romance and steam in one more installment of what is turning out to be my favorite fantasy pirate series ever!! Knigh and Vice started the series as enemies turned lovers and went on to be enemies, then frenemies, companions and now friends and reading it all developing in such a brilliant way was more than satisfying! I’d definitely recommend the series as I have already done so many times and this new installment didn’t disappoint one bit!! The worst is waiting for the next one to be released!!

I AM SCREAMING!! That ending has caused me to expire. Wow wow wow best book yet! So much action, tension, LONGING, breathtaking moments, and more! You could cut the sexual tension with a knife and all the Vice and Knigh moments were SO GOOD! And not just the steam; they finally TALK and the therapy sessions were so soul-baring and honest and it made my heart just ache. I love them so much.
But then OMG the last 30% of the book got crazy! Nonstop jaw-dropping action. Absolutely breathless as we raced to that ending. Thank goodness the next book is already out because I’d be losing my mind otherwise!
Y’all gotta read these books!!!

4/5⭐️
2.5/5 🌶️

I got all my sexual tension in the first half of the book! I loved all the torture Knigh and Vice went through staying “just friends.” 😂

That being said once they came to their senses I did lose interest and struggle through some chapters.

Don’t get me wrong the hunt for Drakes treasure is still going on, and entertaining, but I got a little bored of the same old plot line. Vice is still maturing, but I do respect that she WANTS to be better.

The ending did draw my attention back in, and I can’t wait to start the next book to see if they can find Vice! I need her and Knigh to confess all their feelings and get married!!

Fae and pirates...it can't get better than that...two of my favorite things. This is the third book in the series, and I've been invested since day one. Clare Sager has a knack for drawing the reader in and painting a vivid world with flawed but exciting characters that are too real to ignore. Even the antagonists are some of my faves. I can't help but still like Fitz after all he's done because, let's be honest, if we didn't, how could we still love Knigh? And Vee...she's such an amazing, strong main character, but she still has weaknesses that were explored a bit more in this book. I'm anxious to see what happens in book four, and I almost don't want the story to ever end. Honestly, I think Clare Sager could write fifteen more books about Vee and Knigh's adventures and I would never get bored.

I read this awhile ago but forgot to leave a review!!

I love Clare’s work. Under Black Skies had so much going for it. Great character growth first and foremost. And such an intriguing story. I had a hard time getting into the book in the beginning but that faded and I was met with a fantastic end that left me yearning for the next book!! I love Vice and Knigh and there complicated relationship. I love that Vice is starting to grow and show that she’s trying! It was just great all the way around.

Kudos to Clare, yet again! And bring on Book 4!! 🥰
