USA Today Bestselling Author Dakota Willink delivers an emotionally gripping, dark romantic suspense that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Gianna

There’s a common expression I remind myself of every day: that which does not kill us, makes us stronger.
People think I live an idyllic life with my perfect husband, but they don’t know what lies beneath the façade. Like the delicate petals of the daisies he loved to give, I was easily crushed—broken, just as he wanted me to be.
I’ve learned to accept what is, but I won’t let it destroy me.
Instead, I do the only thing I can to survive—I run.

Derek

I knew she had a story. I knew it most likely contained violence. But never did I imagine the horrors she’d been through.
I’d waited so long and she’d experienced so much. She was perfectly imperfect, her scars more than skin deep. And yet, I couldn’t help wanting to get closer.
She was strong and there was beauty in strength. I was drawn to it—drawn to her. I wanted to erase her horrors and give her something new to dream about.

Wow! What a powerful story!
This book is my first by Dakota and I can definitely say, I'M IMPRESSED. Her storytelling skills are superlative. She built the danger and drama till my pulse was racing in every chapter, my heart beat outside my chest like a drum. I was shit scared of Ethan Walker, a Bible mouthing, dirty cop. and I prayed...oh lord, did I pray for the safety of Gianna Valentini.
Thank God for Derek Miller and his safe arms

A sea of abuse, a reign of terror and a mountain of oppression, pressing down on a lonely, timid little girl. She's plucked from her carefree days and imprisoned in a marriage, straight from hell. Her monster is the guy who vowed to protect her, cherish her. Well, his intention of "till death do us part" is pretty clear cause his claws are tightly closed around her neck, choking the life out of her. Along with broken bones, cracked ribs and swollen eyes.

The Hyde Disguised as Jekyll is standing just right of her, with a venomous fake smile and false promises of love
Every woman should read the book cause survivors are all around us. We must learn to appreciate them and applaud them cause like Gianna, it takes a lot of courage to fight the Devil Goliath.
Dakota doesn't hold back on details, making this story more graphically honest and hard hitting.
It's a book with a mission. To empower women with hope, to bolster their courage and show us the faces of true wonder women walking unassumingly amongst us
Well done Dakota

MAJOR TRIGGERS

I knew this book was going to be dark, but nothing prepared me for this book AT ALL. I finished Sound of Silence two days ago, and I cannot stop thinking about it. It’s been a long time since a book has affected me like this one did.

Gianna is a beautiful young bartender, struggling to make ends meet as well as the death of her mother. She then meets her knight in shining armor, Ethan. After a whirlwind romance, they marry. On the day of their wedding, there are signs that things are not what she expected. Years pass, and it is apparent Gianna has to make a move. She just has to survive long enough to put her plan into place.

Ethan is simply evil. You get to read his POV, which really makes his depravity even more bone chilling. Reading his thought process freaked me out that a psychopath like him could be walking around, especially in his position.

As you can probably guess, this book is raw and intense. More than once I had to put the book down and walk around because my heart was beating out of my chest. I adored Giana’s strength and resilience, and I can’t count how many times I had tears in my eyes.

I highly suggest you read Dakota Willink”s (the author) review where she explains her research in how to make the story as real as possible.

Gianna thought she married the perfect man, only to realize her life had become a living hell. Abused for 3 years, she finally escaped from her torment after enduring a brutal anal rape by her husband. There was nothing easy about her life and the first 30% of the book was extremely intense and raw and quite difficult to read at times.

But once Gia was able to escape, I was able to breathe a little bit easier. Yes, there were still undercurrents of danger and I knew another confrontation was coming, but the tone of the book shifted from abuse to recovery.

At the heart of this story was a journey of courage and survival. When Gia fled she was very broken but she was also strong, resilient and a fighter. She was fiercely determined to gain back control of her life and the reader couldn’t help but cheer her on as she steadily climbed out of the dark abyss that had consumed her for too long.

With a new man by her side (and frankly one that deserved all the swoony stars possible 🥰🥰) Gia reclaimed her life and her transformation was inspiring.

- "We all have demons, but it’s up to us when we choose to face them. You confronted yours and managed to stand strong in the end. Your story is a testament to getting back up. I’m proud of you. You inspire me, and I am honored you’re choosing me to share your life.”

This story is graphic and doesn’t shy away from the horrors of domestic abuse. Its honestly raw and devastatingly real. I had to put the book down a few times just to calm down my erratically beating heart. Adding to the abuse was the psychological element encompassing the husband. He was psychotic and his thoughts and actions were quite chilling.

This is a book that will have your heart pounding and simultaneously breaking, but if you can handle the subject matter I highly recommend.

Solid 4 stars.

This was a powerful and gripping story of a young woman who was broken and yet still beautiful. She was abused by the hands of the one person who vowed to honor and cherish her forever, her husband Ethan. This story is graphic and doesn't hold any punches.

After 3 long and hellish years living with her own personal nightmare, she has the courage and the means to finally attempt to leave. It took time to do so, since her husband was law enforcement and he had made sure to strip any and all type of independence from her, slowly and thoroughly - she didn't work, had no car of her own, no money apart from her allowance from him. All she had or did was on his terms.

She has to wipe her slate clean and start fresh. Leaving to go to the next town over wasn't enough. She needed to be as far away from Ethan as humanely possible. A close friend helps her find a piece of solace in New York.
Everything she does is on purpose and is her trying to move on... without Ethan locating her.

Unbeknownst to her, the man of her literal dreams is so close to her. The one man, that changed her heart and mindset with just one simple conversation on her wedding day is just within her grasps. The man who was her saving grace while her husband was hurting her. She would shut off her mind and heart, just to focus on the lone man who would soon help her to see that she can live again, that she can love again.. with him.

This is the story of redemption and crawling out of a dark, dark well of broken dreams and trust. This is the story of how a broken woman find her strength again with the man whom will love her like none other. He will love her without control, without fists and without guilt. He will show her just how strong she is with and without him.

“Hello, Gia.”

Sound of Silence is not a love triangle, but a story of survival and it was our first read by the author, Dakota Willink. If you’re in the mood for something dark and gritty, this romantic suspense will answer your call, although, we have to point out that story may contain triggers for some readers, so please read the author warning: Dakota Willink does not hold back.

“You want to talk about Sleeping with the Enemy? Well, I lived it.”

We were instantly gripped by the story – being tossed from side to side with the twists and turns, and catching ourselves shouting throughout over the impending danger, whilst squirming over the actions of her husband. We felt every moment of fear and heartbreak with Gianna over her predicament, and despised her dirty cop husband, Ethan, who was one calculating bastard!

This romantic suspense is told in three POV’s. Gianna’s – from the heady days of meeting the charming (yeah right!) Ethan, through to the moment he showed his true sinister colours. Ethan’s POV is expressed in a warped, twisted, and sinister manner. And the sweet and gentle Derek, who’s POV brought balm to our tattered hearts and angst-ridden stomachs.

‘I didn’t have to lose a piece of myself to find love.’

They say you never know what transpires in someone’s life and in Gianna’s case, this rang true. To the outside world, she lived an idyllic life – a beautiful home, an attentive husband, married to the youngest Chief of Police in the Cincinnati Police Dept. Gianna appeared to have it all. But looks can be deceiving.

‘They thought Ethan was perfect in every way – from his polished exterior to the smooth way he spoke. But they didn’t know about the monster who lived beneath the façade.’

As much as some parts of this story made us feel uncomfortable, we couldn’t look away! We did feel there were moments when the book didn’t quite know what it wanted to be, but we were transfixed and horrified for Gianna on every step of her journey. We willed her to find the peace she deserved and flicked every page desperately, yet tentatively waiting to see how it played out. And breathe……

FIVE DARK & BEAUTIFUL STARS!!

I knew this story would be dark just from the blurb but after so many good reviews I just had to dive in and try it. The first part of this book will test all your boundaries and leave you with your heart in your stomach wondering how someone can be so cruel. After your stomach is successfully about to fall out of your ass you will see the light at the end of the tunnel and fall in love with Gia for not only her strength but her determination. I don't want to go too much into the story because if you decide to read this book you need to experience it to its fullest. That is all I got for this one.

Dear Readers,

I hope you enjoyed reading The Sound of Silence. This book was inspired by a piece I wrote for Nevertheless We Persisted: Me Too, a special audiobook collection of essays and poems from people who are survivors of sexual discrimination and abuse.

While The Sound of Silence is fiction, there are many truths to it—not in the actual storyline per se, but reflective in our way of life. For too long, victims have been silent. Some remain quiet because of shame, others because of fear. Silence also comes from societal pressures that convince victims their story is not real, valid, or important.

I realize parts of this book were not always easy to read—just as the life of a victim is not easy to endure. I spoke to many abuse survivors while writing this book, seeking their input to ensure Gianna’s story was nothing short of authentic. While being married to a radicalized serial killer is far from reality, the story of her abuse isn’t.

The women I interviewed told me about their experiences, and I will forever be grateful to them for their brutal honesty. These brave women shared stories of put downs which, eventually, turned into full blown criticisms from their partner. Soon after, the control would start. They were questioned, had no personal space, and endured unrealistic demands. Then came the mistreatment, cruelty, and abuse. It was often so subtle, by the time it was noticed, it was too late. More often than not, the women were made to feel it was somehow their fault. The feelings of confusion, bewilderment, and fear were so powerful, they no longer recognized their way out.

During my conversations, I came to realize one very important fact. Every woman I know has been victim of harassment, abuse, or violence of some kind. I want all the women out there to know, me too.

People often say, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” The reality is, it’s not the easiest thing to do. No relationship is ever black and white. Then there are those who indirectly suggest the woman provoked an abuser by saying, “Well, what did she do?”

Trust me when I say—no woman ‘asks for it.’

For too long, victims have been told to be quiet, to feel ashamed, and are forced to shoulder the blame and suffer in silence.

This is wrong.

On average, twenty-four people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. Nearly one in ten women in the U.S. have been raped by an intimate partner, while one in six have experienced stalking victimization in which they felt fearful or believed they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed. Those are staggering numbers.

To the strong women who shared their truths with me, thank you. I salute your bravery, resilience, and capacity to love. You are beautiful, capable, and worthy. You are magnificent and strong—and more powerful than you can imagine.

Love, Dakota

If you or someone you know is a victim of abuse, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−SAFE.

5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐
The Sound of Silence is a must read. ( I had an ALC copy)
The subject of the story is marital abuse, and at times it's a heartstopping gut wrenching listen. Having said that very early on you know that every word of this story has been written with thought, care and sensitivity whilst never sugar coating the traits and behaviour that an abuser presents towards their victim and the long road that they must go on to find the person they once were.

Gianna like many felt she'd found her forever love in Ethan like so many of us with no thoughts to the devastation that lay ahead of her. Ethan like most abusers had a dark and troubled past having been abused himself. Although this should never be used as an excuse to remove ownership of their actions.
On Ethan and Gianna's wedding day she has a brief encounter with Derek that Ethan interrupts but Little did she know at that they would meet again in the future. Even though the story moves on in time it still remains true to the subject so when Gianna eventually meets up with Derek again, who is the polar opposite of Ethan in every way. He's encouraging and patient allowing Gianna to be who she wants to be, he gives her the confidence to be herself again, allowing her to make decisions, whilst not rushing her into anything and gives her the space to find the real Gianna that Ethan so cruelly stole from her.
You will find this story hard to comprehend at times, it's both heartbreaking and tense but does mirror many real life stories of those who suffer at the hands of an abuser. As much as you will pray for Gianna, you will also admire her ability to dig deep to find her inner strength to learn to trust again in Derek.
I applaud Dakota Willink for tackling such a sensitive subject with the upmost care, your authors note chapter was truly an inspirational listen which left me in awe of you as an author and Connor Crais, Sarah Puckettvo and Sean Crisden as narrators for taking on this delicate project to tell the story of domestic abuse and the baggage it creates for both the abuser and the victim and how a victim can turn their life around to start a new life, and so I thank you all.

Ahh!!! Where do I start? Ok, so I went in blind, didn't read the full blurb, so I had no clue what I was getting into. Actually won an Audio ARC in a giveaway.

Let me tell you how Dakota, this was my first time reading her btw, drew me in so quick. The writing is flawless, the story is captivating and the characters play their part perfectly.

The story is told in 3 POVs.

Gianna, she's living life day by day nothing much going on until a stranger comes to her aide one day. They fall madly in love, get married and then that's when all hell breaks loose.

Ethan, is not what he appears to be. He was supposed to be Gianna's knight in shining armor. He was more like a turd in the toilet.

Derek, an accidental encounter with Gianna on her wedding day left him wanting more. All he gets left with is her earring.

Once Ethan's true colors show, Gianna hauls butt and runs right into Derek. These two fall in love but Gianna is still very much afraid of what Ethan is capable of and so she becomes a badass and learns to defend herself.

This book reminded me very much of Enough, with JLo. But it is written with so much emotion and feeling, it was hard to put it down when I needed to. I can say this will not be the last book I read by Dakota.

I had the pleasure of listening to an ALC of The Sound of Silence by Dakota Willink. This was such a difficult book to listen to, it has a lot of triggers due to domestic physical abuse. In the author's note chapter, she did a great job voicing out the struggles of women who survived this sort of relationship. I appreciated that she did her research and interviewed survivors to bring authenticity to Gianna's story. It showcases the strength of these women to overcome their fears and move on with their lives. Such a powerful dedication piece.

The book was narrated by Sarah Puckett, Sean Crisden and Connor Crais. All 3 narrators did an amazing job bringing life to this very sensitive book. I'm new to 2 of the narrators (Sarah and Sean) and they were great as Gianna and Derek. Now, I've listened to Connor Crais before and this is such a new version of him that surprised me! His versatility and range from what I'm used to (romantic boy next door or alpha male character) to this creepy, stalker, psychopath is just beyond talented! I could not put this audio down and had to finish it. Thank you Dakota for a well-written book and bringing awareness to domestic abuse. This is a must read/listen!

Gianna worked in a bar and thought she had found her soulmate with cop Ethan, but things could not go more wrong, as her life become a living hell, and after 3-years of suffering she finds the strength to run and reinvent herself as Val. Derek saw Gianna on her wedding day and never dreamt he would ever see her again, but through chance he sees her in the park. Theses two start of as friends, and the chemistry between them is intense, but what will happen when Gianna’s past comes back to haunt them? This is a beautifully written story which had me totally enthralled throughout this addictive page turner, and this author has done an outstanding job in penning this tale with such sensitivity and compassion. Be aware that this story may contain triggers for some readers! I look forward to reading more from this talented author in the future.

I am now going to listen to as many of Dakota Willink's books as I possibly can. Because that book I just read was pure gold. It had me on the edge of my seat! I caught myself many times stopping the task I started doing to just close my eyes and listen to this book. I loved Derek and his patience with Gia. And I loved Gia's strength. This book had everything I love in a dark romance. 5 stars and MORE!!!!!

This one was really good! Even though this deals with a tough subject of marital domestic violence/abuse, Dakota did put a different spin on Ethan's past. This one is really fast paced and to me it had a thriller vibe to it. Very well written.

The narrators Sean, Sarah and Connor were perfect for their roles.

WOW!!! This book so much more of what I was expecting, this story shattered my hearth and put it back together piece by piece. What an amazing story of survival, determination and hope this book was.

Giana thought she found the person that will cherish her and protect her when she met Ethan. But life didn't turn as she wanted and her dream became a hell. Ethan was not the man she thought she married and she endure for three years the most horrible circumstances with him until she had to run for her life.

Three years ago Derek met this beautiful bride that stir this feelings in him and never in a million years though he would see her again. But when by accident he sees her, this spark that he felt before with her comes back full force unfortunately Giana, now Val as she introduce herself is a different woman with a shadow over her shoulders.

What I love about this story is Giana's determination to live and start all over. I love how Derek is there for her, his patience towards her made me fall in love with his character. Their chemistry is beautiful and what's starts as friendship becomes so much more.

When Giana's worst nightmare comes back to hunt her she needs to make a decision and thrilling and unexpected surprises, keep me at the edge of my sit , I couldn't put this book down.

Definitely a must read!!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Gianna
There's a common expression I remind myself of every day: that which does not kill us, makes us stronger. People think I live an idyllic life with my perfect husband, but they don't know what lies beneath the facade. Like the delicate petals of the daisies he loved to give, I was easily crushed-broken, just as he wanted me to be. I've learned to accept what is, but I won't let it destroy me. Instead, I do the only thing I can to survive-I run.
Derek
I knew she had a story. I knew it most likely contained violence. But neve did I imagine the horrors she'd been through. I'd waited so long and she'd experienced so much. She was perfectly imperfect, her scars more than skin deep. It was near impossible to separate truths from lies but I knew her secret. And yet, I couldn't help wanting to get closer. She was strong and there was beauty in strength. I was drawn to it-drawn to her. I wanted to erase her horrors and give her something new to dream about.

The author has a warning on this book and you should heed it if you are sensitive to domestic violence. This story just about tore my heart out too. This book deals with a lot and I have to say that it was gut wrenching at times. But It is not all like that. Dakota Willink did her research, put in her time and wrote a book that will have you reading as fast as you can and will tear your heart out but put it back together again. I am not talking about the story as I don't want to give anything away about it. Just grab this book and read it or you are missing one beautiful story.

There are books that just sink into your soul bone deep, and Dakota Willink has done it with this one for me. It's not the romance or horrors of domestic abuse. It's the realistic way this story is presented. Gia and Ethan are married after a whirlwind romance. Ethan is a charmer, but there is a whole other side to this man Gia had no idea existed. After several years of abuse, she breaks free and begins a new life. Bumping into Derek, who she met on her wedding day is just coincidence. But things always happen for a reason right? Building a new relationship over time is working out so far, but will she ever stop looking over her shoulder? Will the fear of Ethan coming to get her ever stop? And what will Derek do when he finds out her past? So much is invested in the outcome of this story, and Willink grabs it by the horns and gives it all to us. There is no sugar coating, so if you do not like this type of book, don't pick it up. It's violent and tragic, but there is hope and love too. It's smartly written and the best part for me is the awareness it can bring to so many. You never know what happens behind closed doors, and this story is proof. I loved it. The characters, the story line and the way it stays true to life. Willink has a winner on her hands and it moves straight to the top of my 2020 list.

The narration brings this amazing story to life. Each character perfectly cast. Sarah Puckett comes in as Gia. She has that wonderfully happy and excited voice and when things begin to go bad, Puckett has a way of inserting sadness in her tone. It's not the depressing kind, but it resonates in her voice until things begin to get better. Fantastic performance. Moving on to Connor Crais. I love his voice and boy does he play the crazy Ethan well. Maniacal, yet totally charming he is amazing! And Sean Crisden as Derek with his warmth and love as he courts Gia. His voice is smooth and caring. I loved this casting, and it brought the story to life.

First and foremost WOW! I am a pretty critical reader, rarely giving higher than 4 stars so you have to blow me out of the water and this book did just that. It takes a unique author to tell a story that revolves around so much vulnerability, betrayal, fear, and yet incredible strength. This story had so many elements it's hard to articulate without spoilers. The characters are well written, very real, and each have their own quirks. I appreciated that for instance when Derek was speaking the author portrayed that while he was a good man, he still had the same thoughts of any other regular guy, he still had wants and desires and would catch himself having to rethink and almost battle with himself, not because he was a bad guy just that he was human. When you are a woman who has survived any type of unspeakable act the internal battle is real and even with therapy. You constantly second guess, wonder, feel bouts of shame, but then you find an inner strength, a will to survive, a will not to let it define who you are. This author did a perfect balance of all of that, I could feel the struggles of Gia, I could feel the evil of Ethan, I could feel the confusion of Derek. I could feel the hairs on my neck standing up, I could feel the pit in my stomach, I could feel the ache of my muscles, I could feel the determination, self preservation, and the pure will reading these words. I don't know how I have never read anything by this author, but she will be on my permanent one click list now. If you like a romantic suspense that has a powerful woman with a great supporting cast than this book is for you. I would suggest you read the synopsis for any warnings the author gives, if you are triggered by certain things.

I received an #ALC of this book and couldn't wait to listen. This book is narrated by Sarah Puckett, Sean Crisden, and Connor Crais. The story revolves around Gianna who is swept up in a whirlwind romance with Ethan, who she meets at the bar she worked at. Ethan is a cop, and has a dark past. Connor completely blew my mind with his performance of dark, twisted Ethan. On the day of her wedding, she meets Derek and they have a brief conversation that is interrupted by Ethan. This book has a lot of time jumps in it. On the run and few years later, she encounters Derek again. This the story of how one woman overcomes an abusive, domestic relationship to find inner beauty and confidence in herself. She battles many demons and finds strength that she is enough and can face and battle her darkness. All three narrators gave fantastic performances of this dark romance. I was hooked from the start, and left with an engaging eye opening experience.

When Gianna married Ethan the future she envisioned soon turned into a nightmare when she realized that their life and love is nothing but a lie. Years later their relationship reaches a crisis point and she manages to escape but her battle to reclaim her life is just beginning.

Derek met Gianna by chance on her wedding day, but he has never forgotten their encounter. When fate brings them back together, he can see the toll her past has taken on her and he is so supportive and understanding as she works to become the woman she used be.

Both Gianna and Derek are such compelling characters, and their story captures you from beginning to end. After everything she has endured she is so much stronger than even she knows, and Derek gives Giana exactly what she needs with no thought of the consequences to himself. The narrators did a wonderful of bringing out the personality of the characters as well as the emotion and suspense of the storyline. 🎧The Flock

The Sound of Silence swept me away on a gripping, intense and satisfying journey. As Dakota Willink is new to me, I began this story with my mind open to a new and exciting reading experience. It was the best thing I could have done. The story was a total surprise. The way it was written impressive. The content was sometimes confronting and dealt with sensitive topics. The author delivered this story with respect and frankness. The suspense was endless and fierce. Gianna's life was brutal and her struggles heartbreaking, making my connection to this character deeply heart felt. Derek was there to guide her and be her strength when she fumbled. He wanted to be her everything, while admiring her courage, her independence, and her courage. The Sound of Silence is a brilliant and riveting romantic suspense that I got lost in. And I was blissfully happy doing it. 4 stars.

So the story focuses around marital abuse and at times my heart broke when I was listening to this it was so gut-wrenching. From very early on you know exactly what it is going g to be happening in this book. I feel like the author handled it really well and respectively and sensitively too. I really like that the author tackled these topics and it was written really well.

The narrators of the audiobook did a fantastic job with this story and really brought it to life and also handled it with such care.
