Mo Kane was a friendly tour guide from the city of Grahwood, Wessing Territory, on the planet of Rohavoake. She had lived her life secluded from the secrets of the other two territories of her world — the middle territory, called Semweisse, and the eastern territory, known as Essidel. Before Mo’s time, the three territories were completely sealed off from each other by two magical barriers called World Rims, which were impossible to pass through. Wessing is where people went to live away from magic. The nearest World Rim was the only magic many people in the western territory ever saw.
Thus, she grew up and lived her life, never seeing what magic could do. Then, her father died, and no perpetrator could be found. Instead, the only clue Mo had was a strange insect she had never seen before that her father had left behind in a jar on his desk. In investigating her father’s mysterious death, she found herself suddenly in the midst of a strange foreigner claiming, impossibly, to be from across the World Rim, a group of assassins, and a strange creature unlike any animal she had ever seen.
Mo sought the help of her sister, Janika, who is the Captain of the City Guard, and her old friend, Sorcha, who her father had known and trusted. Her lackadaisical lifestyle was shaken up as she discovered that her friends weren’t who she thought they were, and who she could really trust came under question.
The foreigner, Kyle Greenhand, really did cross through the World Rim, and it turned out he was more than just a handsome traveler; he was a blood hunter. Furthermore, Mo’s close friend Sorcha was a powerful warlock. The two of them revealed to Mo that she was, in fact, the Worldbuilder foretold in prophecy, and Sorcha gave her a magical artifact called the world well. This device allowed Mo to travel instantaneously.
By using it, the trio escaped to Semweisse to figure out why the World Rims were failing, why demon familiars were getting through, and what all this had to do with a mysterious demon master called Amobis Kai. Unintentionally, however, another friend of Mo’s, a city guard named Yoni, ended up on the other side of the world well with them. Yoni and Sorcha set off to find answers to help Mo on her quest, and she and Kyle headed to a tribal village of people called the Durgers. There, the tribal oracles revealed the location of an artifact called Bazoth’s Gate, which was necessary to defeat Amobis Kai. Mo and Kyle leapt through the world well to meet the guardian of this artifact, who turned out to be a less-than-friendly warlock who escaped with it again.
In trying to find him and Bazoth’s Gate, Mo overheard her sister conspiring with a member of Amobis Kai’s guards. To protect the secrets of a parchment their father had given Mo, she decided to burn the parchment. Unfortunately, she was recognized by Janika’s commander, who unintentionally followed her and Kyle through the world well back to Semweisse.
Now, Mo must convince Commander Janson to switch his allegiance and help her defeat the agents of evil and chaos…
