This was a quick, fun read with really likable characters. As soon as Tessana was introduced, I automatically liked her sassy self. Oliver was a breath of fresh air. The relationship between him and Tess was only friendship so I didn’t have to struggle through an annoying love triangle after Arrick AKA Prince Taelon. Let me tell you. He is swoon worthy 😍 I enjoyed this and can’t wait until the next installment comes out. 4 stars

I really wanted to love this. The premises was sooo intriguing and sweet. But the main character literally would not have survived 5 minutes without all the help from every other character.
She does not do anything. She does not think things through or learn quickly. She blunders around naively and recklessly and Taelon does all the problem solving and quick thinking. And people just suddenly fall and pledge allegiance to her?

Case and point:

Tess: Oh look, a crow. Crows everywhere, even in my dreams. My uncle talks to crows. That’s weird.
Me: MAYBE THAT MEANS SOMETHING.

Tess: *Sees Man who looks/acts exactly like childhood betrothed, and gives away his real identity multiple times.* Nah, never met him.
Me: Oh for the love of god...

Tessa: *walks into the war room to plan take back her kingdom* I have a crown. They will just hand it over.
Me AND Taelon: Girl, you serious???

Seriously. Give the Crown of 100 Kings to Taelon. The Rebel and Cavolian armies were really pledging their allegiance to him. In the 8 years, Taelon has helped run his kingdom, become commander of the rebel army, made alliances with other free armies, negotiated with the Ring of Shadows, and made the realms a safer place by protecting the people.
For the love of all that is holy, pls give him the Kingdom or make Tess worthy of it.

Title: Crown of One Hundred Kings
Series: Nine Kingdoms #1
Author: Rachel Higginson
Release date: October 27, 2020
Cliffhanger: yes
Genre: YA fantasy

This is only my second read by Rachel Higginson; my first was a rockstar romance titled Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar.. I was excited to read something in the fantasy genre from her since I've been gravitating in that direction in the past year or so. The book cover, trailer, and synopsis really pulled me in and snagged my curiosity, all hinting at a strong female protagonist who must overcome dark magical forces to reclaim her kingdom. The writing and worldbuilding are very easy to slip into. Sometimes fantasies-especially the first in a series and feel dry and dense as you weed through the characters and backstory of the kingdom(s). Thankfully, that wasn't the case here because in my current frame of mind I need stories that are effortless.

Tessana Allisand is an orphaned princess living in seclusion inside a silent monastery. Forced to flee after her entire family was massacred, she's been biding her time in hiding until she's old enough to return and claim what's rightfully hers. Unsure of who was behind the murder of her family, it wasn't safe for her to remain in her kingdom where unknown forces would plot to finish the job they started. The monks are eternally exasperated with her independent, rule-bending side, but she has become a very special member of the holy family. Stern Father Garius shows the depth of his feelings for her when he breaks his vow of silence to encourage her to make the dangerous journey home to convince her kingdom to crown her the first queen in a land that has always passed to kings.

"You are Tessana Allisand of the House of Extentia, daughter of Fredrix, King of Elysia and Ruler of the Realm. You are a princess. You are a survivor. And now you will take the crown back to your people and show them that you are still alive.”

Tess makes the journey with her friend Oliver, a bit naively thinking that she's prepared to face the hardships that are in front of her. After being sheltered for so long, she lacks the knowledge of the challenges that are in front of her during the long trek. It doesn't take long before she meets Arrick, a rebel leader hell bent on not letting her out of his sight. At first she can't quite peg the guy. After capturing Oliver and herself, he's oddly reasonable in releasing them and returning their belongings. Not only that, but he's insistent on accompanying them to protect them from the Traveling Horde and The Ring of Shadows.

These are violent mercenary groups who a real threat to her safety, and her training in self-defense won't amount to much when surrounded by the sheer numbers on the opposing side. He's willing to shield her from these forces who may want to do her harm and expects nothing in return, yet Tess stubbornly and proudly tries to deny their help. I found that to be somewhat foolish because she needed all the help she could get. Her pride outweighed common sense because there is no possible way she should take on the risk of traveling alone when she has an offer of help in unfamiliar territory. She's on a quest to prove that she's capable of being her kingdom's first queen, and at this point she isn't quite there yet.

Arrick was clearly a "good guy" right from the start despite being a rebel leader who is seen as a criminal by most. From the first introduction, it's easy to deduce that he means her no harm...at least it was for me. There is a twist involving Arrick which I must admit was 100% predictable based on the amount of foreshadowing given to the reader. Personally, I feel as if we are almost beat over the head with a continuous barrage of hints that neutralize any mystery that could have been there. When the reveal finally comes, the heroine is dumbfounded that she was so blind to the truth. The fact that it seemed so glaringly obvious only serves to make the heroine appear completely oblivious and witless. Is this the young girl that's going to inspire confidence in overturning patriarchal traditions? I do realize that she doesn't need to be perfect, don't get me wrong. There is room for character growth here, and she does grow in confidence by the end of the book as she experiences more of the real world. I just wish that the twist had been more subtle so it could have been more effective.

After returning home, the real fight begins as she must produce the missing Crown of Nine that she's been protecting and prove her identity to those who thought she had died. As if that's not bad enough, her uncle is clearly not thrilled at their family reunion and challenges the validity of her claims. If she is unable to prove herself beyond a shadow of a doubt, she could pay the ultimate price-her life. She lays everything on the line for the good of her people in the hopes that she can root out the evil at the source of the royal assassination.

Why three stars? For me this isn't a bad rating, although many see it that way. Three means that I enjoyed it, but I just didn't love it or find anything plot-wise that stands apart from the rest. Maybe it was the fact that I've read other books with similar plot points this year. For me, it was like a combination of Shielded by KayLynn Flanders and the Crown of Shards series by Jennifer Estep. It was just a little predictable for my taste, but having said that, the book was by no means bad. The romance was sweet and promises to deepen in the installments to come. I liked Tess a lot overall, and though she had her faults, I respected her and found it easy to root for her up until the end. She's a young woman willing to fight against all odds and risk her life for the well being of not just herself, but her people. Her unselfish actions coupled with her courage in returning to the nightmare of her childhood makes her a worthy heroine. I will be interested to see where Rachel Higginson takes the series as many questions are left unanswered. If you're looking for a straightforward fantasy with a strong romance, this could be the book for you.

I could not ignore the purpose that had been given to me the second I saw the crown again. I could not ignore the call to fate that had led me this far. I could not ignore that I had been born into a bloodline that belonged to the Seat of Power as much as the Crown of Nine belonged to it.

This is a story of tradition, legacy and revenge, as a young woman fights for her right to the crown.

I've read several books by this author, mostly on the lighter side of romance, so I was genuinely curious how her foray into the fantasy world would be. As you can see from my rating, it was a worthy risk on her part. While I'm no stranger to the fantasy genre, I sometimes struggle with the complex world building. Thankfully, that is not a key element in this story. Yes, the kingdoms in this book are not real, but the story itself is easy to follow and added to my own personal enjoyment.

Tessana "Tess" Allisand escaped her home in Elysia eight years ago, following the slaughter of her entire royal family. Hidden away in a monastery in Heprin, she has bided her time to return to her homeland. When one of the Fathers presents her with the family crown, she long thought destroyed, she knew it was time and had the weight of possibilities on her shoulders. Could she become Queen of the Realm? The cards were stacked against her from the get-go.

Tess and her friend, Oliver, do not seem well equipped for this large voyage, facing one obstacle after another. But while under capture by the Rebel Army, she strikes up a friendship of sorts with one of their leaders, Arrick Westnovian. I had my suspicions about him, and I'm wondering why Tess didn't see the signs that were so obvious to me. Nevertheless, he proves to become a key ally and her protector during her travels.

Since her departure years prior, the kingdom of Elysia has been ruled by her uncle, Tyrn Fennick, who I hated immediately. Desperate to remain in power, I didn't doubt that this man would do everything possible to keep his seat at the crown. And it was clear some darker elements were at play. While this book only hints at those elements, I expect they will become a bigger part of the story in the next installment. I'm eager to see whether Tess has the ability to rise up against her enemies.

If you are looking for a new fantasy series, this is worth checking out.

This book has such a vibe of something published in 00s that I caught a nostalgic feeling from it. Epic, good/evil, just/unjust… like fantasy was many years ago. I find this kinda cute, even.

The book is okay. You can’t rate her like you rate other fantasy now, serious, complex, overthought. This story is almost fairytale-ish.

So, what do we have here?
A feudalistic system of several kingdoms which are loyal to one central kingdom, “the first among the equal”. There is a special crown, a symbol of power. It is called the Crown of One Hundred King since there were exactly one hundred kings before the massacre of the royal family. MC’s father was the 100th, her brother was supposed to be the 101st but then everyone was killed but Tessana, our protagonist.

She was saved by her betrothed and given to silent monks. She grew up in their monastery, gained a friend (a very talkative apprentice of the silent order). From time to time she dreams of her dead family and travels to flashbackland where she was followed by a prince of a neighbouring country, a handsome blue-eyed-black-haired boy she was betrothed with.

When a raven caws at her resulting in her falling into the river to drown, the monks see it’s time to let her go. The moment itself is outright hilarious: a silent monk speaks, gets The Crown from a bookshelf and gives it to Tess. He goes like “now go get your throne back” and to her reasonable objection that there’d never been queens, only kings, the monk just tells her to become a queen. Then he gives her The Crown (the most important thing in this realm), the monk apprentice and sends her to a creepy Blood-something forest, good luck, have a nice day.

But wait, there’s more.

In the very first tavern, she finds out she knows nothing about the rules of the reals. She’s not informed at all. There are Rebels, there’s war, something evil… and she’s like, what? Plus, she needs papers to travel. Papers she definitely doesn’t have.
She’s approached by a creep in a cape and runs away… just to be captured by him and his merry band of bandits in that creepy forest. He robs her and leaves her hanging but she needs to get her crown back, plus the amulet from her betrothed she’s been keeping for all these years. She just sneaks to the bandit camp, pokes the creep in his deary parts, and he’s suddenly all gentlemanly and ready to help. Tess denies the help so we have the funniest dialogue where a bandit leader repeatedly begs the protagonist to allow his army to escort her through the dangerous lands…
Really.

Anyway, we see that the rebel leader is a young guy with blue eyes and black hair, Tess is immediately reminded of her betrothed, so you kinda know who’s the guy. He calls himself Arrick, and despite the fact that the prince from her childhood had a different name, Tessa starts suspecting him right away. And we have his identity revealed somewhere near the middle of the book, thank you.

So, after all these coincidences, how can you compare this book to other all-serious fantasies?

Tess is naïve but cute. She also has a cute fox. Tess is kind, just, noble and has a sense of humour. She’s likeable.

Arrick/Taelon is twenty years old, had an army, knows how to deal with intrigues, defeats the bad guys, saves everyone, is beautiful, noble, etc. Completely unrealistic Disney prince, but here, in this book, this just adds to the naïve atmosphere.

Tessana is dumb when it’s needed for the plot. Sometimes it’s too silly, however. Like, only in the end of the book did she connect the cawing ravens and attempts of her life, after a hellish amount of these events. She sees nothing wrong in a creepy woman in a raven-feather dress. The woman’s name is (no joking) RAVANNA. Like, really.
Also,

All things considered… I still enjoyed the book. It’s a good one-time thing.

To read if: you want a classic epic fantasy about “defeat the bad guys, get the throne back”; you want a cute, kind, and funny protagonist; you want a Disney prince.
Do not read if: you hate naïve silly plot-building; you want serious fantasy politics and intrigues; you want something more cruel, severe, rough.

This was my fate. I was meant to rule Elysia and the entire Realm. I was meant to be Queen. And they would not stop me. Whoever they were.

In this story we have Tess, who is living in a monastery with monks that have taken a vow of silence, in a kingdom far away from hers. She's been hiding there for the last eight years, since her family was massacred. Now several signs show her that it's finally time to return back home and reclaim her throne, since Tess is actually a princess and the legal heir to the throne of her kingdom and her realm. A wild adventure awaits her and Oliver, her friend and companion. They meet some people along the way, friends or enemies, only time will tell.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I devoured it so fast and it was so good!! It had everything I love in a fantasy. The lost princess trope and her old story with her betrothal, gave me the romance I desired. Also, her friendship with Oliver was just perfect and let's not forget all the animal companions 😍😍 There were some intense scenes and maybe some predictable stuff that happened, but they didn't take anything from my reading pleasure 🙌🏻 Definitely recommend it ❤️

It has been some time since I read a YA fantasy story, but being as it’s Higginson doing the authoring, I was all in. And let me tell you a little something...it was so absolutely fantastic. Higginson picked right back up with this genre like there was no time lost since she last penned one. She delved back in and wrote it, owned it and delivered it. She gave CROWN OF ONE HUNDRED KINGS the perfect amount of fantasy, romance and intrigue to keep my heart happy and my mind content. Written perfectly and beautifully, this book was every bit of 5 Stars. I am so excited to see where this trilogy goes from here.

This was a fun read! Very reminiscent of your traditional medievalesque fantasy with princesses, castles, hidden identities, a journey, and threats to the throne.

I enjoyed the new world, and how there were nine unique kingdoms that were united by a common ruler over all of them. The characters were young, and I enjoyed seeing some of their growth. The hints of magic and darkness lingering around the edges has me excited for book 2!

The plot in this installment wasn't too distinct - I mean, we have a lost princess who has to hide her identity in childhood, who then travels back to her kingdom as a teen to take her throne from a corrupt extended family member (already, it sounds like the plot of a recent favorite of mine, The Queen of the Tearling). And of course, along the way, she suspects one of her traveling companions to be someone she used to know and love, but for some reason just doubts it the whole time when it's really obvious???

However, I enjoyed some of the more subtle parts of the story - there have only ever been kings, so how will Tessana be accepted as a female ruler? She is young and admits her naivety with regards to her kingdom - how will she grow to understand the needs of her kingdom and be just? She was destined to be married off and queen of a neighboring kingdom, but now has to take on the role of Queen of her own country. Lots of little details that kept me intrigued and invested in Tessana's development!

The romance felt sudden at first, but I'm curious how the dynamic will work between the main couple, given their responsibilities and differing ties. Also - Oliver. I loved the portrayal of a PURELY friendship relationship between Tessana and Oliver. It was sweet, felt like siblings, and was so wholesome for them both.

I hope the politics and struggle pick up in book 2! This was a great introduction to the world and story, and I'm ready for some bigger happenings! I have a feeling the ravens will be involved...

**romance notes: attraction, light kisses, mentions of being betrothed. very YA tame.
**content notes: fires & mortal peril, assassination attempts, creepy dreams, gore is remembered in hindsight but only lightly described.

High fantasy is very much a hit-or-miss for me. The elaborate storytelling and complicated set-up can be hard for me to settle into. I'm happy to say that wasn't the case with Crown of One Hundred Kings. Something about the way Rache Higginson has written this made it feel relatable and understandable - even as she wove a complicated tapestry within the story.

Truly, I think the writing was my favorite thing about this book. I appreciated the attention to detail over the course of Tessana's travels, but I am a sucker for character driven novels and so - for me - the dialogue is where the sweet spot was here. My goodness, it was so much fun to read! I'm hard pressed to say whether I loved Tessana's adorable friendship with the incorrigible Oliver more? Or the simmering chemistry and sparky banter she shared with Taelon. In either case, or in all cases, there was so much to love about the way these characters were written, and how they interacted with each other. It kept it real to me. And, of course, it made me care so much for these characters.

There's a lot of set-up in this book, which isn't unusual for this genre. It dragged a little in spots for me, but in other spots it held my attention completely as my eager brain greedily ate up these words, dying to know what happened next, and enjoying every second of the adventure!

And it was an adventure - one that's not over yet. I suspect it's only begun. There are a lot of loose ends that have not been wrapped up and my heart doesn't really know what to think of everything right now. I'm nervous and excited to see where the story goes from here, but I'm so happy to be on this journey with this wonderful cast of characters! ~ Shelly, 4 stars

Gah I loved this book! It was soo soo good!

Fantasy is my jam, especially high fantasy! The adventure, the world building, the characters.. just everything about it, and Rachel Higginson does it fantastically! It has been a hot minute since I devoured a book, but I could NOT put this one down. It sucked me in from the very beginning, and I loved every second of it!

The Crown of 100 Kings follows an orphaned princess, Tessana, who goes on a quest to take her rightful place on the throne. The plot is full of twists and turns, and just the right balance of seriousness and humor. I cannot wait for the next installment, and to see more of this world and the people in it!

Read this book!

“You are not just a girl, Tessana. You are Tessana Allisand of the House of Extentia, daughter of Fredrix, King of Elysia and Ruler of the Realm. You are a princess. You are a survivor. And now you will take the crown back to your people and show them that you are still alive.”

2020 may be a rough year, but thank goodness for it bringing a new book by Rachel Higginson! Loved this book and I can't wait to see how the rest of the series goes! Tessa and Oliver's friendship brings me joy. I just love those two. I want a Shiksa of my own as well. And that Rebel King? He's definitely got some swoon to him. A lost Princess, a (not so) silent Monk, and a Rebel King travel through a forest.... Get ready for adventure, secrets, tragedy, a bit of swoon, and the sense that there is something MORE going on that can't quite be seen. I highly recommend checking out this book!

Tess is 17 and has been hidden away ever since her (royal) family was murdered 8 years ago. She is possession of the 'crown of nine' and one day she feels it is time to travel to her home, Elysia, to claim the throne. Her companion is young Oliver and on their way they also find a young fox kitten Tess adopts. They encounter the Rebel Army and their leader offers Tess protection on her way to Elysia.

The writing is of course, delightful. Rachel Higginson can spin a tale. I enjoyed the story. Tess is young and fierce but also a bit foolish in my opinion. She is 17, has no army or anything to protect herself, but is adamant to confront the current King. Both Tess and the hero (I assume he is the love interest) are not really fleshed out. They are young, beautiful/handsome but nothing special as of yet. Just being a princess does not make you special.

The story is kind of a fairy tale about a lost princess trying to claim her Kingdom and encountering the evil uncle/King. Nothing unpredictable and no shocking twists in this book but that might change in book 2 and 3 of this trilogy. So, I am looking forward to the next!

I really wanted to like this book. I don’t like to post negative reviews, and I always want to look for the best in everything I read. But when it came to Crown of One Hundred Kings I just didn’t get what I was hoping for. Maybe it’s because I’ve read quite a few books lately that have absolutely blown me away, but personally, I left this story feeling pretty disappointed.

Having a basic fantasy plot, or using well-used character tropes, is absolutely fine but there should also be something more beyond that, besides a quest and a moustache-twirling villain. I’m sure others might find this story a lot more interesting than I did, but unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.

I loved this book up until about 60% in, and then the momentum stops, with the odd pacing and story choice. The budding romance, which I was excited by earlier on, even felt less everything by the end, like we missed a step. In the last section everyone kept going on about their dedication to protect Tessa and she is dragged away and almost killed a couple of times. I'm worried Tessa will become a super warrior, like most fantasy YA protagonists are these days, as her sword fighting skills are amazing by the end. So, I loved the Anastasia-like story, potential romance, and simple plot, and I even didn't mind the most predictable character reveal ever; but it all went a little downhill by the end, with the most annoying villain. I hope book 2 will be great.

Wow. I am so glad I was able to get an arc for this. I was seriously captivated by the book, the whole time. I didn’t want to put it down! It has everything you could want adventure, mystery, friendship, romantic tension, everything. Even though this is the first book of the trilogy, there is no cliffhanger, but it does seriously have you wanting more. Tessana was perfect, she is strong and resilient and exactly what you want out of a heroine. All the characters are written wonderfully. I’m dreading the wait because I can’t wait to continue!

I have been waiting for Rachel to write another fantasy series since falling in love with her Star-Crossed one years ago! The level of detail in world building she creates is absolutely phenomenal, and I especially like how she writes characters who are young but not juvenile (if that makes sense). Loved the pace of the book, the character interactions, and the overall storyline. Can't wait for book two! (Big thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

I am hooked, now I must wait for the next one.

All I am going to say about this book is that I love Tessana and Taelon and cannot wait to read more about them. Keeping my fingers crossed they find a way to be together and that the uncle gets what he deserves.

Not my favorite story. I love the idea but certain plot points don't seem to match up. And the vibrant characters I'm used to from Rachel's writing aren't in this book. Im hopeful the next book will clean up some of the story and the characters will be built out more and be more believable

I love Rachel Higginson and I am so happy that she has started writing again! I had the opportunity to receive an ARC for an honest review, so here it goes! I enjoyed the characters of this novel, especially Tess, but I felt that they could have been developed to a greater degree. I loved Shiksa so much and I would have really enjoyed if her little fox personality would have been developed. I also felt that Taelon was entirely predictable. I think that this book had great potential but it didn't go the extra mile to be original, it felt a lot like Sarah J Maas. I enjoyed reading this book but it didn't feel like an immersible world like the Love and Decay series. I think that the rest of this series has the potential to be amazing, but I wanted more from the first book!

4.5 stars — Well wasn’t that all that and a bag of chips! This is technically my 3rd time reading this book, though it has changed over that time. I think this final copy is just about perfect: it has humour, action, suspense, mystery, great friendships, and a splash of romance.

Tessana is everything I love in a YA heroine — feisty, sassy, vulnerable, but still with so much courage and hope. She has a huge task set in front of her, and honestly she could be a bit naïve at times — the way she would trust some, but more importantly the way she was wary of others for reasons that others had given her. But it left so much room for her to grow, and she did just that. She still has a long ways to go, but that’s what makes it compelling to want to continue on her journey with her…you know, besides all the plot stuff *snort*.

While we didn’t see a lot of Taelon, I really loved what we did see. He seems so right and honourable, but with a bit of roguishness thrown in for good measure. I appreciated the glimpses we got of her past with him as well.

Oliver was the perfect best friend companion. I loved the way he would call her on her shit, and bring her back down to earth. He was hilarious, but also brave and loyal. I hope we continue to see more of them bantering back and forth in the rest of the trilogy. There were a lot of other great secondary characters, most with not a lot of screen time but enough to be impactful. And then there’s Shiksa…I love that sweet girl and can’t wait to see her role in the future.

My romantic heart was rewarded with a truly fire kissing scene, which was enough to satisfy me.

The whole mystery surrounding her family’s deaths, and what has happened in Elysia, has me in tenterhooks. I have theories out the yin yang, but no idea how many are actually correct…only time will tell.

All in all, as with all books by Ms. Higginson, the story stands the test of time and rereadings, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Side Note: I tried listening to the audiobook for this reread, but I was not a fan of the narrator. For me, she didn’t make the story compelling. And she didn’t have a great range of consistent voices, so it didn’t bring anything new to the experience, and I just read instead.

High- fantasy is one of my favourite genres of books, mainly because it transfers the reader to a whole other world where the rules tend to be quite different from the rules we live by in the daily life. Twisted and turned and shaping a whole different world in which the reader is immersed, living the life of the characters he/she is reading about. And quite an escape from the ordinary world we are all used to.

World building and setting are two things I focus the most when reading fantasy and high fantasy. Being a whole different world, the details must not only be appealing and interesting, but they should make sense and seem natural to the world described in the book. A world without logic is a world that lacks, regardless if it is fantasy or not. All the little details put into the creation of the world and plot should grow up in equilibrium and in a logical matter. In this way, the world seems real to the reader, and not forced or having to deal with plot holes that make the reader question the ability of the author to create a relevant world that would actually make sense. “Crown of one hundred kings” displays a high fantasy world that is rich and mainly logical, the build up is constant, the set up of the world has a lot of details and plotting and I can only appreciate that because it’s one of the things that draws me closer to a book. I love the work that is put in the details, in the building of the fantasy world and the rich sense of adding up to shape a solid setting.

Adding up to this, a second thing I really liked in the book was the writing. I am a huge fan of a creative and detailed narrative that embraces the reader with the style of writing. The action is rich and also enriched with the style of writing that envelops the reader deeper into the world. I love a writing style that is warm and rich, filled with description, that shows emotion towards and between the characters, and also shows a display of love between the author and what he/she created. It is much similar to showing somebody a thing that you love and enjoy doing. This is how the process of creating this fantasy world filled with action, plot and characters should look like. Like the author truly enjoyed the work on her own. And what I can say about “Crown of one hundred kings” is that you can tell that the book was written with feeling and emotional investment.

The characters should look and feel like real people, even as displayed in a fantasy world. Tess, the main character of the story, is an orphan taking a quest to regain her birth right to be the one standing on the throne. So from the start there is a heavy burden on her shoulders that she should be deemed and prove to be able to claim. It is the display of a strong main character, put through hardship, a premise usual to the entire high fantasy genre meant to help grow both the world and the character along with the story. I loved the relationships between characters, being friendship or romantic interest, the interactions between them were adorable and the sparks were real. Just as in a real life situations, they didn’t seem forced or meant to express more than they were actually supposed to.

The sense of adventure is something that should never miss in a fantasy world and this book was filled with adventures and quests, of one thing adding up to another and the narrative being build up on the next action that would be made. Everything building up to more and more and developing a complex plot that keeps the reader hooked on the story and curious to know what happens next. And to where things will end up based on the plot and character decisions, on hardships and future events happening in the world.

As a conclusion, I recommend this book especially to fantasy and high fantasy lovers, to readers loving a detailed world building and rich set ups, strong characters and epic battles, taking in a world filled with fantasy and intriguing plots that lead to a flow of dashing events.

5 stars!

The murder of the royal family of Elysia leaves the little princess, Tessana, in the hands of peaceful monks, trying to find her place in the world. However, her place is not with the monks, it’s on the throne ruling over the nine kingdoms. Tessa’s birthright makes her the only one who can bring peace to the world but there is evil who wants to finish the job they failed when they let her get away in the first place.

With the Crown of Nine that rules over the realm and a sidekick named Oliver, Tessa goes on a quest to take back her place in the kingdom. She has it all planned out but you know what they say about best laid plans, things never go quite as you expect.

I love fantasy so Crown of One Hundred Kings is right up my alley and it did not disappoint. Tessa goes on an epic journey to reclaim what is hers but it proves more difficult than she ever imagined. From rebels and mercenaries, to unexpected allies, Tessa must face her fears and fight for what she believes in.
I ached for this realm, this realm that used to be united and prosperous. This realm whose people trusted each other. My need to change it now bloomed into an intense sense of purpose. It started in my toes and bubbled through me, rushing through my veins, filling my blood with intention and my bones with determination.

It’s an adventure full of self-discovery and growth. There are battles to be won and people to save. There is darkness that threatens everything Tessa stands for that pushes Tessa to the limit. She is strong and brave though, and her exciting and daring quest leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Along with the action and adventure, there is a glimpse into what could be an epic love story. Betrothed as children, Tessa and Taelon had their life planned out. Now, things are different and they must figure out how they fit into each other’s lives, if it’s even possible.

Tessa still has a whole heap of challenges before she sits on the throne and I cannot wait for more! It's has a wonderful mix of light and dark, fun and feels, and I loved it!!
My quest had finally ended.
But the journey to becoming queen was just beginning.

I had high expectations about this book, unfortunately it didn't meet me half way either. . .

Just a very general aspect of the characters I have problem with, Tessa, the pretagonist is a 17 year old girl who is naive and brainless like a 10 year old. She even thought just because she has 'The Crown' she can easily become queen. Through out the book shows her concerns what her people may think or what not about her becoming queen after years of her parents death and her desaparece, but in the majority of the time she has these spoil brat mentality like: "when I become queen I do this. . . I'll order that .. ." She rush through (OBVIOUS) problems, has no knowledge whatsoever of the outside world (since she was raised inside a temple), her reasoning isn't so reasonable most of the time which make me worried if she even becomes a queen, and the icing one the cake. . . She can't add 1 plus 1 together with obvious hit about her 'fiancé'

'Fiance' who started off first as Arrick. He's betrothed with our protagonist since childhood, in the book he is now 20 year old with obvious similarities of Tessana childhood fiancé but no matter how she always compared them with all similarities she never put 2 plus 2 together to get the conclusion that he is, in fact, Taelon. . .her fiance. . . When she finally discovered the truth I palm my face so hard I have a red mark.

Note I am not hate shaming this book. This story has potential but the author made the Male protagonist (Arrick/Taelon) better suited to lead a kingdom over this girl pretty much useless except she knows a thing or two of fighting.

At first I thought probably she will go through rough character development, nope.
Maybe she will realize Tealon is a better lead to finish everything and just marry him to give him the right of her throne so together they'll fix the kingdom. . . .nope

Conclusion, the author pretty much made a brainless teenager to try to become queen, with no outstanding skill and make a very (any other story male protagonist) badass and good looking male protagonist feel in madly in love her, just because.
Please author, if you're reading this jusy make Tessana inteligente and actually useful so she can become worthy of being a female protagonist.

I really missed having a Rachel Higginson book in my life. I haven't really felt like reading much at all this year and when I do read it feels more like a chore than a desire. Then I get Rachel's newest book and I reminded again why I loved reading!

Rachel's writing just instantly draws you into this new world. She writes such compelling storylines and characters that you can but help instantly fall in love (or hate) with. A story about loss, struggle, and finding your destiny against all odds.

Tessana lived a charmed life until it was all ripped away with one brutal act. Forced into hiding she is chased by nightmares of her past and fear of the danger that still hunts her. I appreciated this character. She was strong as she was naive and vulnerable. Though she lost it all she was still able to grow up loved and protected. It will serve her well as she fights for her throne but I enjoyed that she was the usually jaded I hate the world heroine that is so often found in YA fantasy. it was refreshing to say the last.

I just have to say I adored Taelon. That man is everything I love in a hero. Strong and Loyal it was great to see him work but also loved how he didn't try to overshadow Tessana. He would always protect Tessana as he promised as a child but let her forge her own destiny. They both had amazing chemistry with each other and the witty banter was to die for.

The book was perfect and had some faults. There were some continuity issues and felt like the important player's attitudes were a bit to caviler for the dangers they were heading into. However, I was still captivated by this book and it was hard to put down.

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

This is the first young adult book that i have read by this author and i am certainly not disappointed. Along with a brilliantly written story, the world building is credible enough to make it feel real.

Tessana was only young when her immediate family was murdered leaving her bereft and in peril. Tessana was spirited away to another kingdom and looked after by silent monks for many years before she starts having dreams of needing to go back home.

Tess takes along her best friend Oliver who lightens things up and also keeps her company. The world is not what it used to be, danger is around every corner and the world is in unrest. It is not long before Tess and Oliver find things are very different to what they were expecting and there spirit and determination will be tested. She is also a very strong character in both will and the determination to do what she was born for, she stand up for those around her and of those she feels need her help.

I guessed who the guy who comes into the picture was very quickly and was glad to be right and was glad that Tess may only be 17, but she was not an immature 17, therefore was more relatable to me, or it may just have been the authors incredible writing.

Tess's journey is the main plot of the story with an undercurrent of romance with he new male character and although the book does not end in a cliff hanger, it does leave many questions unanswered leading into the next book of the series, which i seriously cannot wait for.
