Detective Jo Fournier #4

The Other Mothers

Rate this book
It’s a crisp spring morning when the small-town community around Briar Ridge Elementary School is shattered by devastating news. Bright and shy five-year-old Nicole has disappeared at recess.

Nicole’s mother, Gia, is lost in her grief. On the same day her baby girl vanished, Gia found out she was pregnant with the sister Nicole had begged for. Gia is also devastated that her best friend Karen was supervising the playground when Nicole was taken. And when Nicole’s body is discovered, Gia can’t help but ask: why didn’t Karen protect her little girl?

Someone knows what happened in school that day and Detective Jo Fournier is determined to find the truth. Jo’s little nieces also attend Briar Ridge and she would cross mountains to keep them safe. As she starts to dig into the mothers’ secrets, she begins to wonder if anyone is telling the truth. Gia’s been hiding a part of herself for years and Jo can tell it’s eating her apart. And Karen is definitely lying—but what is more important than finding the killer of her best friend’s daughter?

As Gia and Karen struggle with their guilt, a teacher at Briar Ridge dies in what looks like a tragic accident. But with two deaths in such a short time, Jo knows better than that. In this school, where soccer moms flock to the gates with cookies for teachers, someone is willing to kill to keep a secret. The only question is who.

A completely addictive thriller that will not let you go until you turn the last heart-thumping page! Perfect for fans of Gregg Olsen, Christopher Greyson and Teresa Driscoll.

M.M. Chouinard is the USA Today, Publishers Weekly, and Amazon Charts bestselling author behind The Vacation, a standalone psychological thriller, and the Detective Jo Fournier series, featuring The Dancing Girls, Taken to the Grave, Her Daughter's Cry, and The Other Mothers. She loves animals, coffee, amateur genealogy, and anything to do with Halloween or the zombie apocalypse.

M.M. Chouinard's first fiction story was published in her local paper when she was eight, and she fell in love with Agatha Christie novels not long after. While pursuing a Ph.D in psychology and helping to found the first U.S. research university of the new millenium, the stories kept rattling around inside her skull, demanding to come out. For sanity's sake, she released them.

The Other Mothers is the latest book in the Detective Jo Fournier series by M.M. Chouinard. In this novel, Jo’s investigation involves a local elementary school. A child goes missing at recess, and is later found dead. Of course, Jo is determined to find who killed the child.

This is a fantastic crime series. I love mystery series with strong female characters. Jo is smart, dedicated, and tough, but she’s also got flaws, making her relatable. Her personal story is interwoven into the mystery story, making for a more enjoyable novel. In fact, all of the characters are well developed and interesting.

This is the fourth novel in the series, and I recommend reading this series in order. However, The Other Mothers can be read as a standalone novel.

The Other Mothers is a complex and intriguing mystery. With a compelling story and entertaining twists, this novel is sure to thrill fans of crime fiction.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Jo Fournier has a very difficult case ahead of her. At first she is called to an exclusive elementary school when five-year-old Nicole has disappeared. Sadly, Nicole‘s body as soon found. As Jo begins to delve into the case, one of the first people that she speaks to his Nicole‘s mother, Gia. Sadly Gia has not only lost a daughter, she discovers that she is pregnant and now knows that Nicole will never have the chance of possibly having a baby sister.

Gia and other mothers volunteered at the school, and one of them was her best friend Karen who was the supervisor at the playground on the day that Nicole disappeared. Quite naturally, friction exists between the two women at the loss of Nicole while Karen was at the playground.

It doesn't take Jo long to realize that someone knows what is going on. What’s more than evident is that someone is lying. As the story develops certain things are revealed about specific characters in this book. The book takes surprising twist and turns as these facts are slowly revealed. To make all matters worse, one of the teachers at the school suddenly dies. Why has a child and now a teacher lost their lives?

I have read many thrillers over the years and always at least one surprising twist to come into play. However I will say, without a single spoiler, that the twist in this book I could never ever have expected. I have been thoroughly enjoying this series and this book, The Other Mothers, is truly an excellent read.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The Other Mothers is the fourth instalment in the Detective Jo Fournier series, set in Harristown, New England. Detective Fournier is called back into work a day before the end of her fortnights enforced medical leave due to a serious incident at private tuition-funded Briar Ridge Elementary School in order to lead the investigation into a frankly horrifying and deeply worrying crime that will rock the community to its core. Five-year-old Nicole Marchand goes missing during recess despite being surrounded by other children and two adult monitors - third-grade teacher, Jim Karnegi, and parent volunteer, Karen Phelps - and everyone nearby is frantic. Once the Detectives arrive on the scene they are informed that kindergarten teacher Stephanie Roden had discovered her body laying near two dumpsters with a sky-blue puffer jacket covering her face and desperately tried to resuscitate her. Who could suffocate and discard an innocent little girl like trash? They begin conducting interviews first at the school and then the wider area, including looking at possible opportunists and local registered sex offenders. Karen Phelps, one of those watching out for the kids during that recess and a good friend of Nicole's mother, Gia, is interviewed, and although she gives all the "right" answers she seems shifty and nervous. Worryingly when her mother, Gia, is notified she doesn't seem all that phased by her daughter's suspicious death but she isn't the only one. Nicole's father, Anthony, refuses to take time off work to meet the Detectives to discuss the horrendous situation.

It's blatantly obvious something isn't right within the family and within the parents' friend circle but the team are having a hard time deciding quite what they think is going on. Is this just the way they as people deal with loss and trauma as not everyone deals with tragedy in the same manner or does their strange lack of emotion point to serious underlying and deeply disturbing issues of some kind? Shortly after, there's a trip from Briar Ridge to the Ancient Egyptian Museum (AEM) located in downtown Wiltshire when fourth-grade teacher Layla Madani is killed. Fournier and Arnott are greeted by AEM curator Dr Neil Gamal who takes them to the crime scene. Leyla had apparently fallen off a pyramid modelled after those in Giza despite being given rigorous instructions and there being protective ropes and waist-high handrails all the way around to stop accidents. It appears someone is targeting those associated with Briar Ridge but why, and how are the two cases connected? This is a compulsive, enthralling and highly emotional procedural with a huge dollop of mystery and enough of both engaging personal plotlines, and getting to know more about Jo, alongside the crimes and thrilling investigations. The suspect pool is huge and the twists plentiful so you're never sure what is coming next and that makes for a riveting and thoroughly gripping read. There are so many secrets, lies, deceptions and pure malice to make this one of the most sinister, chilling and deeply disturbing thrillers I've read in a long time. Highly recommended.

The Other Mothers by M.M. Chouinard is the fourth installment of a gripping series focused on Detective Jo Fournier. I was late coming to this gem of a series, but I am making it a priority to catch up on what I've missed, and I cannot wait for the continuation. This one, however, can easily be read as a standalone.

A five year old girl has been murdered, found lifeless in a school shed during recess. Returning from a brief leave after suffering a miscarriage, Jo is shocked not only by the horror of the crime, but by the realization that this is the same school attended by her two nieces. Reunited with her partner Bob Arnett, Jo must discover how such an event could possibly occur under the watchful eyes of a tightly knit school community, in a case that will hit more closely to home than ever before.

I was fully invested in this complex case from the very start, and was thrilled for the chance to reunite with Detective Fournier once again. If you have been following this series, or jumping in for the very first time, you will not be disappointed.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

Exciting! Chilling! Author M. M. Chouinard’s new installment in the series was one rocking ride from beginning to end.

A five-year-old child was murdered and ruthlessly dumped behind her school during the recess break. Who would do such a heinous thing? Then came the reaction of the mother who was calm and collected as if grief couldn’t touch her hair. OMG! How? Why? And there was more… Her coterie of friends had something to hide. All of them were puzzled by this family who had more wealth than emotions.

Then a fourth-grade teacher died under mysterious circumstances. From the same school. This school seemed to be was truly a cesspit of nefarious things. And it took all of Jo’s mental fortitude and determination to investigate the gruesome crimes.

I wouldn’t claim to remember Detective Jo, as all my police procedural leads had squished into my brain, but I was given enough backstory to love her. The case was a ruthless one; there were many suspects. I had my theories, but I was more eager to get to know the truth. The Other Mothers seemed to be hiding something.

A thorough investigation, a suspenseful well-plotted story, great chemistry between the lead detectives, and smooth camaraderie within the team made the pages fly right to the final reveal. It was quite a ride.

Wow! What a book. I love this series and I think this is my favourite book so far.
Detective Jo Fournier is due back from leave but returns a day early as a five year old girl’s body has been found and it looks like she’s been murdered.
What’s even more shocking is it happened on school premises, so Jo and Arnett have a real puzzle on their hands.
Suspicions are aimed at teachers and parents as cameras didn’t pick up any other people entering the school but could it really be someone who knew her?
Another body is soon found and again the murder is linked to the school as it happened on a school trip to the local museum. This time it’s a teacher who has lost their life.
Jo is struggling with some things from her past and tries her best not to let it influence the investigation but at times she finds it hard.
When the killer targets someone close to Jo she knows she’ll do anything to save them and has to dig deep to overcome her past, to save a life.
This is a great read as one minute you think you’ve worked it out, then something else happens to make you question it.
A brilliant addition to this great series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

What an unputdownable story! I am late to this terrific series, and jumped right in with this fourth one, The Other Mothers. It reads fabulously as a standalone, but I so enjoyed it that I’m going to go back to the first to catch up.

A small New England town is shocked when a little girl is found lifeless in her schoolyard. Detective Jo Fournier, already grieving, has just returned to work after suffering a miscarriage, and must solve this horror. She is vulnerable but relentless. With her partner Bob Arnett, the hardest part is discovering how such a tragedy could possibly occur under the watchful eyes of schoolteachers, a good friend of the mother, and a tightly knit community. Also confusing is the reaction of the child’s mother, who was either too calm or possibly just in shock. Then comes the death under mysterious circumstances of a fourth-grade teacher, and the case becomes even harder for Jo. Too many pieces in the puzzle, too many people to suspect, and the other mothers seem definitely to be hiding something.

Jo Fournier is a brave and deep feeling character with problems from her past, but she’s still driven to find out who is lying and why. I never guessed. The ending was a shock. This is a gripping, fast paced thriller that pulls hard at your heartstrings and will be hard to forget. Now I’m going to read more in this fabulous series. I’m so glad to have found it!

A young child is killed on her school's playground surrounded by children and two adult monitors. How does that happen?
Jo returns a day early from her short leave of absence- dealing with her past loves and their sudden, violent deaths as well as a miscarriage.
Jo and her partner, Arnett are at a total loss - after scouring video tape, key card access, albis, etc, they have nothing.
Just three close women- Karen, Gia, and Molly. Jo just needs to figure out who is lying and why.
Great suspense. Little long but moved quickly.

The Other Mothers by M.M. Chouinard is the fourth book in the Detective Jo Fournier series. This particular book did fine as a stand-alone and I was able to follow the plot. However, its apparent that reading them in order is best to understand and appreciate the characters at play especially Detective Fournier.

Detective Jo is called back from medical leave early to investigate a child that has gone missing from the local elementary school. What starts as a potential abducted child case quickly turns to a murder investigation. But it wont stop there. By the end of this book there will be much more bloodshed and death. However ,the party responsible is who you least expect and will leave you utterly shocked!

M. M. writes a gripping and fast paced thriller that not only grabs your attention it also rips out your heartstrings. The Other Mothers is a truly unforgettable read. I honestly cannot wait to read more from Detective Jo Fournier. I am ecstatic to have found another series worth following!

Just couldn't get into this book at all. I stopped and started again numerous times but it didn't resonate with me. I didn't like the characters, the storyline was too jumpy and packed with way too much excess information about characters or their stories. I persevered as other reviews were good and part of me wanted to know who the killer was but I'm afraid I gave up again halfway when I found myself skim reading and not absorbing. Not for me at all.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via NetGalley and for letting me take part in this tour. I really enjoyed the previous books in this series so I was looking forward to seeing where this one took me.

This book was addictive! I seriously struggled to put it down. Chouinard really does know how to draw you in and keep you there. The beginning was paced slow but that allowed the case to build up and the links to form. The last third of the book was very tense and action-packed.

Jo and her team had a lot of potential suspects but none of them really fit. At first, I couldn't work out who the killer was and then I kept changing my mind. There would be one slight bit of evidence that made you question all of your thinking. It was extremely clever.

Jo has really grown over the series and in this book, a lot of personal things come to a head. You don't need to have read the other books to understand as these are explained. I think in this book Jo really turns a corner on her past.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next one!

The Other Mother is the first book I've read by M.M. Chouindard. It's the fourth book in the Detective Jo Fournier series, but I've not had any trouble catching up with the characters. I really like Jo and the way she works with her partner Detective Bob Arnett to investigate a tragic crime. I really like Jo as a main character and the way Bob supports her on the job, but isn't afraid to speak his mind, either.

The subject matter of the book is very sad - the murder of a very young girl - but it's still a very good book in spite of the sadness. The story is told from multiple points-of-view, including witnesses, potential suspects, and the lead detective, Jo. I think I suspected almost everyone of the murder and had several possible motives in mind, but was wrong on everything. The story is heartbreaking, but very well-written. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. 4.5 stars

The murder of a child is difficult to understand and it’s what the detectives in this story are dealing with. It was difficult to read because of the plot but the story sucked me in and I didn’t want to stop reading, I had to know the reasons for the murder of a little girl and also why her mother reacted in such a strange way. The revelation of the killer completely surprised me and the ending was tense. I really like this series and can’t wait to read the next instalment...

My Review:

Wow, wow, wow!!!!! I’m speechless. Did I really just read that???? This is the first book I read by this author and I loved it. This book is part of a series but can totally be read as a stand alone. I have not read any of the other books in this series and I didn’t have any problems what so ever.

This book follows Detective Jo and her partner trying to find out who murdered a poor innocent little girl. While they were trying to find this child killer there were more and more victims as the investigation continued. Was it just a coincidence or was there a serial killer on the loose? Who killed this precious girl and the others? Was it someone close to them? Was it an accident or was there something more sinister involved? You find out these answers and so much more.

I want to start off by saying how amazing this book was. If you like a good mystery with a bunch of twists then this is the book for you. I loved Detective Jo. Even though she was battling her own demons she kept it together to solve the horrendous case of a child killing. In my mind those are the worst kind of killers. Who would want to kill an innocent, sweet, loving child? It’s so hard to stomach who would and they must be very sick in the head. With that being said what a sick, twisted, head spinning ending that was. I couldn’t believe who the killer was. I say that about a lot of books but this one I truly would’ve never guessed it in a million years. Way to go to this author for all the wonderful surprises. What really shocked me though was not even the identity of killer as much as who let it go on as long as it did. Now that person is the one who should rot in jail forever. I can’t really say too much more without giving it away. I’m telling you guys you will be shocked beyond belief. Kudos to MM Chouinard for an excellent book and I will be reading the rest of this series.

Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

A series of shocking deaths at Briar Ridge Elementary School devastates the community. Detective Jo Fournier and her partner, Detective Bob Arnett, of the Oakhurst County State Police Detective Unit are called in and begin an intense investigation that involves the scrutiny of the teachers, staff, administration, and parents at the school. A close knit group of mothers, known as "The Witches of Briar Ridge", include Karen Phelps, Gia Marchand, and Molly Hayes. These women seem to be involved somehow in what is happening but there is so much going on that it's hard to tell what secrets they are hiding and why. NO SPOILERS.

Wow, this was very intense and I could not put it down (even though I had half an ear to the AFC Championship Football Game). It was definitely one of the better series reads I've devoured so far this year, and I can't wait for the next installment having read all the previous books as well. Suffice to say that, although I had some suspicions, this took a serious turn that was extremely chilling.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend. Be sure to read the series from the beginning.

Whatever you do avoid Briar Ridge school. People who go there die. This was my first Jo Fournier book and it won't be the last. Jo is a tough shrewd detective. She's suffered loss, but is ready to open herself to a new relationship. The author is good at throwing off the reader. I missed the mark on a few clues as to who was really behind the killings. And when the truth is revealed, it's chilling and macabre. I think that's why I like reading psychological thrillers, because they are chilling and gripping. In the Other Mothers, just how far will a mother go? Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read.

The other mothers is my first book in the series and what a great story to start with.
I enjoyed this psychological thriller from the beginning to the last page.
I had so many theories throughout the story and I knew there was something off with the family but never have I thought about that twist at the end.
Jo Fournier was an interesting character, a challenging one with her own personal story and past intertwined with the case on hand and I loved how the author made her strong but at the same time caring and we got to see her insecurities and how the case is affecting her in so many ways.
Fast paced, great characters and a very twisty must read story.

Not the best but also not the worst. Let me tell you one thing though. Kids are terrifying. And this book proves that a mother will do absolutely anything to keep her children safe. I spent the whole book thinking everyone was stupid because Molly was clearly the killer. Yikes, it’s not. It’s the daughter!! This story was well thought out and made it very believable that the child committed all the crimes. The author covered the bases for that and made it easy to get lost in the story.

Misty's Corner Review :

The Other Mother's is the thoroughly addicting book four in the Detective Jo Fournier Novel series! Once again, I find myself thinking, 'how is this the first time I'm reading a book by XYZ author?' M.M. Chouinard fits this bill perfectly! Book four is my first, but it definitely won't be my last of her novels; I've already 1-clicked books one through three in this series!

I was 100% hooked right from the start; a detective struggling with a challenging personal situation pulled back into work early to lead a case involving the death of a kindergartner on school grounds, which is soon followed by a few more casualties. Who is keeping secrets, or better yet, who isn't in this uppity small-town? The deadliest secret is one that I can almost guarantee you'll never guess...

Jo is a solid female lead, easily likable, and relatable. I enjoyed reading through her inner monologues as she worked the case. I especially found a few of her interactions entertaining, not the subject matter of the case by any means, but more so the decision to either hold her tongue or put someone in their place!

The storyline itself was a non-stop, heart-pounding suspenseful read! Twist after twist, with all key characters always under suspicion. M.M. Chouinard undoubtedly has a way with words, captivating me from page one all the way through page three hundred and thirty-six! I was not expecting this novel to end the way it did! WOW!! I wish I could say more and deep dive into that ending, but I refuse to spoil it! Just do yourself a favor and check this one out!!

Many thanks to NetGalley, the author M.M. Chouinard, and the publishers at Bookouture for my advanced copy of this ebook and my spot on this Books-on-Tour event! I have honestly and voluntarily reviewed this title.

Thanks for reading!

An impressive read following on from the other books in M.M. Chouinard's Detective Jo Fournier series.

In this one, The Other Mothers, Gia Marchand's little girl, Nicole has disappeared whilst her best friend, Karen was meant to be looking after her during playground supervision at the local primary school - Briar Ridge Elementary in Harristown, New England. As Detective Jo Fournier starts her investigation Nicole's dead body is found but not everyone is surprised or phased by the suspicious death...

I believe The Other Mothers would work as a self-contained read and I loved learning more about Jo. For me, she makes for a near-perfect main character with her inner strengths and vulnerability. Although not without flaws, she showed empathy, despite having personal difficulties of her own, and the camaraderie and bond she shared with her partner-in-crime, Detective Bob Arnett were entertaining and delightfully pleasing. They made the perfect team and Jo's relentlessness and motivation were admirable.

Michelle M. Chouinard’s overall style wowed me again as did the wonderfully thrilling plot in this tale of secrets, criminality, suspicion and pure malice. I really appreciated Chouinard's ability to not only draw me into the sordid, dark story immediately but also keep me enthralled until the very last page. The level of tension that built throughout the story was noteworthy.

For me, The Other Mothers has is all - a plot brimming with mystery, suspense with many twists, as well as family dynamics, characters that are real and believable and a killer ending that blew me away. Michelle M. Chouinard has become one of my favourite authors and I can’t wait to see what's next in this magnificent series.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

The 4th book in Detective Jo series and I finally have a sense of Jo. I like how her family dynamic has evolved over the last 4 books. This book felt different - the previous books we were aware of the murderer and this one we were kept in the dark for a large part of the story.

I probably would have given this book more stars if it wasn't stated that being on the spectrum was something a parent would be ashamed of or try to hide. That didn't sit well with me. It is a spectrum - everyone is on it. Let's not support or encourage ableism (even in fiction).

When five year old Nicole is found murdered at school Detective Jo Fournier is called back from her leave to investigate. Nicole’s mother, Gia, is detached and cold and her two best friends, Molly and Karen are trying to support her but it seems they all have their secrets.

Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.

Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.
