When jewels become lethal in the London of 1912, both River and the Doctor turn up to find out why. A mystery takes them centuries into the past, and onto the high seas, where a superstitious crew edges towards mutiny. The star-crossed couple are about to find out that, while gemstones inspire jealousy, love can be the deadliest treasure of all...
while I love Alex Kingston as River Song combined with an ADHD 10th Doctor played by David Tennant, they make a believable couple and their adventures are welcome generally. This particular audio adventure did not ring my bell. The idea of lovers that want to kill each other through explosive jewel which are hidden at several places in time, is just not working for me. As separate setpieces the timelord and his River works but the story failed to woe me. Now for the good news the Doctor saves earth again and learns about poetry from River Song.
Sometimes what's great about Doctor Who is the discovery of a bit of history you never knew about before. In this case it's the Cheapside Hoard. This episode takes the established facts, mixes them with some speculation about the hoard's origin, and then adds in an extraterrestrial element. It's that last bit that might have pushed things just a little too far. But at least it's a good, straightforward adventure for River and the Doctor.
It’s pretty average all the way through till the end. The doctor and river are a fantastic duo, but not really given a satisfying story of their own within this story. Instead the plot is an interesting but hard to follow investigation with unclear stakes. I liked the setting, but there’s no satisfying payoff. The end is every cliche of doctor who wrapped into one sequence. 4.5/10 - it’s not bad persay, just disappointing given the talent of actors involved
Who in the right mind would want to steal exploding jewelry? Who else but the irrepressible Professor River Song. And the Doctor is just as baffled by her presence as he was when he first met her. Alex Kingston and David Tennant have great chemistry and it shines through even scene they perform.
I am relishing in this series with 10 and River because we get to see them together. I also am enjoying the stories as well, answering the question how dating could have gone between them.
Wasn't sure about this one at the start, but it had a very solid ending. And to think I started listening to it before the big reveal in that last episode...!!
