Mel the Chosen

Rate this book
In this magical middle-grade graphic novel, nothing is more dangerous than a wish come true.

More than anything, Mel wants to be a grown-up, and to make her own decisions, instead of having her parents pick what she wears, where they live, what they have for dinner, and where she goes to school. Then Mel gets the chance to travel to a magical world, where she can make her own choices and return all grown up. But what happens when you get older without living your life along the way?

3.5. Absolutely in LOVE with this art style and while the adventure had heart, it lacked some narrative clarity.

What a disappointment. I saw Mel the Chosen by Rachele Aragno in a library shelf so I picked it up after missing it the first time. I then wanted to read it after glancing the blurb, which made me think I would enjoy the book. I was wrong. The low ratings warned me to avoid the novel. When I finished it, it was so underwhelming.

It starts with the first character I see, Mel, wanting to grow up and be free from the restrictions of living as a child. She suddenly stumbles across another world called the Here and Now where she can have only one wish come true, and for her, that is to instantly mature into an adult. I liked the art of Mel the Chosen as it's all in watercolour. However, my most prominent gripes lie in the titular character, Mel. She's unlikable in more ways than one. Mel can sometimes whine when a guardian acts like an adult (responsibly, of course. I don't want Mel's guardians to neglect her so why did she whinge about them?) She is also naïve when she trusts antagonists too easily, especially the leading one, Malcape. He grants Mel's wish much to her eventual detriment as she soon regrets that and wants to escape the Here and Now. I couldn't connect or relate to the other people either.

To summarise, Mel the Chosen initially looked promising, but after finishing the text, it dissatisfied me. It could've been a huge hit if the author improved some aspects of her fictional composition, particularly the characters. Instead, it was a miss.

Essentially a lesson about 'be careful what you wish for' and don't be in a hurry to grow up. Unfortunately, the story was hard to follow and all over the place. Graphic novels are meant to be comfort reads for me and I tend to lose interest quickly if they take too much brain work or are too confusing, which is the case here.

I love the beautiful art style and while this adventure-fantasy book does have some great themes, the execution was sadly lacking.

based on the afterward and the descriptions and illustrations of the magical items and the castle at the back of the book, the author has clearly built an entire world around this character. unfortunately, that wasn't translated into the narrative. instead it is entirely plot-convenience driven and mel is a quintessential mary sue character.

While this has a great message of just be a kid, you'll be a grown up before too long, it was very disjointed. Mel's parents are fighting and so she escapes to the roof with her cat, only to fall into the next door neighbor's apartment. There she learns that he was actually a young boy instead of this old man, but when he made a wish, the evil sorcerer took his youth. Mel is labeled as the Chosen One, and is tasked with helping Otto find the sorcerer and defeat him, therefore saving everyone in Here&Now. Mel travels with Otto as they cross many fantastical lands and "help" people along the way. There's no structure to this story though, there's no explanation of how they got to Here&Now, and all the backgrounds for these characters are half told because either Otto or Mel encourage the others to continue the journey. Sure there's a happy ending, but it's such a fantastical tale that absolutely nothing makes sense. I am also not a fan of this art style, but I try not to critique books based on that.

Mel the Chosen is an extremely scattered chosen one fantasy in which, Mel, a young girl who longs to grow up, stumbles into a neighbor's apartment, encounters a wizard, and is portaled to another world where she must defeat the vile Malcape for reasons.

There's altogether too much going on here. Sometimes, it feels like Rachele Aragno is attempting a Phantom Tollbooth tale, where our hero journeys through several lands and has several strange encounters and none of it truly matters. Mel the Chosen is no Phantom Tollbooth, though. The afterward notes that the character and setting were devised by Aragno when she was a struggling teen and it 100% shows. Mel, the character, doesn't want to grow up, but this story probably should have.

What a magical story with great underlying messages. More than anything, Mel wants to be a grown-up, & to make her own decisions, instead of having her parents pick what she wears, where they live, what they have for dinner, & where she goes to school. Then Mel gets the chance to travel to a magical world, where she can make her own choices & return all grown up.
But what happens when you get older without living your life along the way? Enchanting adventures & magical mishaps abound as Mel grapples with what it means to grow up. Great messages about being careful what you wish for, wanting to grow up to soon..wishing away years of your life, & more. However, I couldn't stand Mel lol, & I just stayed irritated the whole book because of her. The story is also a little scattered, & confusing at times. The artwork by the author is so beautiful though, & really loved that.💜

This was a really cute graphic novel. I love the artistry in this - there's whimsy in every line! I wasn't super invested in the plot, though, which was a little disappointing.

I love the art within this graphic novel-- it's bright, colorful, and the style is charming and unique. The quirky settings are what really made it stand out for me, but unfortunately the story was a bit.. lacking.

I couldn't get invested in Mel. Or her character, rather. Because there's no emotional background to relate to. Or there's no reason WHY I should care about her journey. She's just.. the chosen one. Okay.. and what else? Is she clever, kind, compassionate, smart? Is that what makes her the chosen one?
Oh.. no.. because a bee loved her so much?
Oh, okay I guess. I mean it's a cute concept.. but.. come on.

Okay, I'm being too mean.
This book is unique, and the author (I feel) has a lot of potential. But the characters in here are so lack luster! Mel isn't given time to shine, nor do we get to see her normal everyday life. Show me (besides one argument) what the rest of her life is like. Why doesn't she have friends? Is it because she's suffering from the loss of her grandparents? Is it because she doesn't know how to make friends? Is it a combination of those things?
How does Mel feel about making friends across this journey? How does that impact her? Oh, and how do Mel's friends feel KNOWING that.

Look, I know I sound like an English teacher, but I'm saying all this stuff because I know this book can be better! The charm, the whimsy-- all of it, yes ALL of it, has so much potential! But we don't get to see that whimsy elevated/ be impactful because the characters themselves fall short. There's not only no emotional connection between them, but there's no emotional depth to them!
What sort of insecurities/ obstacles does Mel have to over come? How does this help her defeat the villain? She has to be more mature, you say?
Okay, SHOW that. Don't say it. SHOW it.
Show Mel acting childish-- selfish, spoiled, like a know it all, not being understanding, etc-- and then show her overcoming those traits, and realizing her mistakes. Bam. Maturity.
Oh, you're saying she has to understand that growing up is important?
What I said still implies. Mel doesn't grow up within the book, she more so just goes on a quirky quest that really doesn't hold any value.

I think that this story/ world is so cool and whimsical but it falls flat on its face because the characters are so one dimensional! We don't see Mel grow, or change, we don't see her make any good friendships, etc. Instead, we just see her go on cool adventures. Which is nice, but this book is trying to be more, but failing. I don't get to see how Mel's loss of her grandparents impacts her, or how her everyday life impacts her, nor do I get to see WHY she's worthy of being the chosen one.

Look. I've rambled enough. I just hope the author's next work is better, and for the lack of a better word, more mature. This book is cute, and fun, but nothing more. It could've been more if more time had been put into the characters in story. I hope to see more from this author, since they're very talented, and have so much potential. I do hope their next work is better.

TROVERETE LA RECENSIONE COMPLETA SUL BLOG IL SALOTTO DEL GATTO LIBRAIO
https://ilsalottodelgattolibraio.blog...

I was wholly surprised by how much I was touched by Rachele Aragno's, "Mel the Chosen". At first this tale of being careful what you wish for reminded me of "Madeline" and "Peter Pan", given the illustrations and whimsy. I was pleasantly startled by how much it reminded me of Neil Gaiman's, "Coraline" instead.

Mel is a adolescent heroine we all can identify with, whether we can admit it yet or not, when it comes to the growing pains of being ignored and/or brushed off by adults. It is frustrating to not be at the helm of your own life, and it can lead us all to thinking and doing things that we later regret. This is especially true when it is towards the ones who love us most. Fortunately, the growing pains subside, and appreciation warms the soul.

Going back to the illustrations, I would adore a set of notecards, bookmarks, prints, and postcards crafted by Aragno. They are delicate, bold, sweet, and at times eerie all in one "bite". If I follow up with another one of her books it will have little to do with the plot, and will be more so for the illustrations.

Often, we do not feel that we are special or chosen when it comes to everyday life, but that could not be farther from the truth. We each have a charm that makes the world a better place, and rather than tarnish and refuse it we should savor it. Yes, there are wishes we would like to come true, but if we devote too much of our energy to those wishes then we will miss out on so many adventures that lie ahead of us. Mel learned that lesson, and now it is our turn.

A superficially charming but ultimately rather unremarkable middle grade coming-of-age/fantasy/adventure story.

Very visibly European in its character designs and linework. The art is very, very impressive (delightfully busy pen and ink and expertly-done watercolors) but it may look a little rough or rustic to readers who are accustomed to the flat, smooth, Cartoon Network-ready look that has long dominated in MG graphic novels.

The story proceeds with its own dream logic and the characters are all romantic and interesting but we rarely stay with anyone long enough for them to develop in a meaningful way. For such a rich-looking universe with so many tempting narrative threads, the story just seems a little thin. A good additional pick for anyone who really likes fantasy adventures.

The artistic style notwithstanding, the episodic, everything-is-a-side-quest-for-an-intriguing-person-in-need nature of the work might appeal to readers who liked Over the Garden Wall.

Mel - The Chosen, written by Rachele Aragano is a good graphic novel. However, I didn't find this book so interesting. But, I loved the coverage!

The story starts with a young girl who is tired of her parents. She always hated them. One day, she entered a magical unicorn world. She is fascinated by her surroundings. Rachele did a wonderful job of describing the scenarios. Coming back to the story, the young girl wished to grow soon. She learnt magic and in a hurry, she made a huge mistake! Unfortunately, the story was hard to understand and follow. Graphic novels are meant to be comfort reads for me but I lose interest if they are too confusing, which is the case here. I love the beautiful art style, but the execution was sadly lacking.

This is a beginner graphic novel, but people interested in fantasy [like me] won't find it interesting. I would suggest this novel to children aged 9-15 years.

It really doesn't take a lot of effort to read graphic novels, but by about 80 pages in here, it didn't feel worth my continuing. Main character Mel just didn't feel human. Her choices and emotions don't make sense to me, even given that kids (really all people) can be mercurial and irrational. I wanted to go with the flow as frustrated Mel gets drawn away from the parents who ignore her and her needs and into a fantasy world where she's precious and special, the savior everyone depends on. But the world and the way she interacts with it really annoyed me. The other characters claim to find her important but still don't listen to her. The quest doesn't get enough explanation, and so her movements don't make sense. She apologizes for things that aren't her fault. Maybe this changes as the story continues, but it didn't feel worth the effort to find out.
