Susan’s childhood dreams of becoming a space explorer fizzled when she found out calculus was involved. Luckily, she didn’t need math skills to fly jets--or to create sky-high stories in her head, first for herself, then for friends, and now for readers everywhere.
A New York Times/USA Today bestselling author and a military veteran, Susan won the prestigious RITA® Award for her book Contact, a sci-fi aviation-thriller romance.
After encountering the author's writing in the Pets in Space anthologies which offered novellas from this particular series, of course I had to spring for the box set and start my sci-fi romance adventure at the beginning and read steadily on through.
Star Raider #.5 Prequel
While written after the series was established, this story came chronologically at the beginning when the Vash Empire and it's eight ruling families are established. And, Star Raider tells the story of a hidden camp of people eking out their survival on a decimated world until resistance fighters come. One raider captain is bold enough to dream big of a fair ruling federation and see it through even while he sits in a hidden cave on his decimated homeworld controlled by a vicious warlord. He will do it for the love of his life, a brilliant munitions maker who must find the courage to stand beside him and face forward.
It established the dark times and the desperation, but also told of people who survived and grew strong. I enjoyed the connection to the characters and the intro to the world, but wished for more pages so the parts that had to be summarized like the confrontation with the warlord could have been fleshed out. Still, a good start.
Star King #1 Star
Rom B'kar was once the heir to the B'kar throne until he rebelled against the Vash Nahdah's rules to go after a charismatic terrorist leader and his growing group set on taking over the galaxy through violence, death, and his brand of dictatorship. Rom's brother is lost and his life is nearly lost and his father casts him off. When his life wavered, he was caught up in a dream with a beautiful woman who gave him the will to live and then vanished back into his dreams. Now twenty years later, a smuggler and trader captain out in the frontier, Rom is in on the first attempt to establish trade with earth and there meets the woman of his dreams, literally.
Jas was once a good fighter pilot until she was shot down. She was rescued, but while out in the desert, she had an amazing dream about a golden-eyed alien warrior that being roused to consciousness dispelled. Going on to a life of marriage and kids and a husband who cheated and then left her after many years, she has been hollow and cynical about trusting a man and love. Then the alien race comes and she catches a glimpse of a brooding alien in the background of the delegation and the sight makes her determine that she will take a chance and have an adventure in space and maybe discover what this alien captain has to do with her dreams.
And, a sexy adventure commences between this pair who have past troubles that have left them scarred and wary of taking a chance even though everything about them feels complete and right when they are together. I loved the blend of space adventure, worldbuilding, character development and a romance that made sense between two seasoned people. The story had a riveting climax and ended on a good place to launch the next book in the series about Jas' adult son Ian.
Star Prince #2 Star series
Some years have passed and Rom from the first book and his human wife, Jas, have settled into ruling the Vash Nadah empire. Now it is Jas' son, Ian, who as Rom's heir must carry the torch. Ian is on a mission out in the frontier for Rom to learn what is going on in these far reaches of the galaxy. He needs to prove himself to the Vash that he is worthy and he wants to have Rom's well-done as well. Ian has found some disturbing evidence that the Vash Nadah has let things slip so conditions have gotten bad, but as he tracks facts and rumors, his ship acts up and he can't seem to keep a pilot. An earth senator is also investigating something on the frontier and Ian needs to track him. Thus, he hires a mysterious female pilot who, sadly, can't seem to hold her liquor and has her own reasons for avoiding a Dar security force.
Princess Tee'ah Dar is stifling under the traditional royal role and only wants to be a star pilot. When her parents take away her wings and push her toward an arranged marriage, she escapes to the frontier and finds herself as the pilot of a smuggling crew. Slowly she realizes that the captain, Ian, is the Vash heir to the throne and she needs to get away from him if she doesn't want to get dragged back into her old traditional Vash role and lose her freedom. But, losing Ian hurts as bad as losing that freedom she craves and besides she wants to help him with his mission.
Just as exciting as the first book. I enjoyed Ian and Tee's story. They face sabotage, intrigue, and then a huge decision from each of them. The world of the story, the larger cast of familiar characters, the strong and engaging secondary romance, character growth, and of course the romance all came together so well.
Star Princess #3 Star Series
After stepping aside when he learned that Princess Tee'ah, his fiancee, and Prince Ian, the heir to the Vash Nadah throne were in love, Prince Che Vedla is being advised to quickly take a new bride to save face for his family and the Vedla bloodline. Always the consummate Vash and royal, he agrees, but then shocks his advisers when he decides to take an unofficial vacation as the hunt for a bride and wedding preparations commence. His destination is the wild frontier of earth and he will have Ian's sister, Ilana as his guide. On arrival, there are a few hiccoughs, but Ilana is more than he imagined and she helps him find the rogue inside. As his time draws to a close, he realizes that leaving earth and Ilana will come at a high price.
Ilana Hamilton watched her dad's infidelity and her mom's sorry and determines that if she never lets anyone get close or stick around then that won't be her lot. She will be in control; she will be the one to do the leaving. She is independent and strong. And, she's terrified of getting on a ship to go to her brother's wedding on the far away B'kah homeworld. But that is nothing to the fear she experiences when she realizes that being in Che's presence is enough to knock her off balance and make her cool as a cucumber routine out to be the shallow cover that it is. She thought she had him pinned as an arrogant, stuffy traditionalist who she had pegged and could control. Oh, how she got that wrong. Che is dangerous to her and she has to put up or shut up about being strong and going for what she wants- like when she went for her dream of film making.
Two seeming opposites figuring out themselves and each other even while someone is plotting intrigue to make sure the sparks between them never ignite. It took me a bit to get into Ilana because her denial that she has issues and her big, bad sassy front had me impatient at first. But, then I I warmed to her and really wanted her to see her be honest with herself and break through her real fears- and I'm not talking about the flying. Che was so good for her and it took a man like him to call her bluff and deal with her crap until he got through to her just as she was just the woman to show him who he really wanted at his side. It was fun the way Ian was playing matchmaker and strong, loyal Muffin finally got his own side romance.
This series remains strong for me and I loved that surprised twist at the end though, it didn't exactly surprise me since I had a hunch about all that was going on. This series works so great getting it in order.
Star Champion #4 Star Series
Klark Vedha is the disgraced second son, but he has paid his dues and is now free. He knows he has a lot of ground to make up if he is to have his father's respect once again. His most immediate way to do this is to bring the bhaja Galactic Cup back for his people. He owns a promising team, but he hears about an outside shot- a street bhaja player out in the frontier on Baresh. He has a feeling about the mysterious 'Sea Kestrel' who has the instincts that only the best of the pros have for the sport. So, he makes the deal and trains young Kes to go all the way.
Jemm has grown up scrambling for even life's basic needs, but her father's dreams of making good and getting his family off world live inside her. He taught her to play bhaja even though girls and women were kept from competing and playing and she showed she had his great skill at the sport which she has hidden until now when her family needs the money beyond what her ore hauling job can bring in. Her street sport work gets noticed by a pro team manager and she decides to conceal the truth about being a woman so she can compete and earn the money to take care of her family and fulfill her dad's dreams. It gets complicated when Prince Klark doesn't turn out to be like no other of his class and he genuinely cares about people- about her. She's falling for him, but must protect both their dreams by not revealing the truth when they really have a shot at the Galactic Cup.
A sci-fi sports romance! Who would have thought? I was glad to see Klark redeemed after being the villain figure in an earlier book and it was great seeing him paired with a woman from the wild and struggling world of Baresh. I kind of wish bhaja was a real sport- clever and even mystic as well as physical prowess all rolled into one. Loved seeing this pair figure it out in spite of secrets, pasts, class differences, and tradition. Great way to finish the main arcs of the series though I'm glad there are still some side stories to enjoy.
Star Heroes #5 Star Series
Star Heroes is a two-novella book featuring stories that appeared originally in the esteemed Pets in Space anthologies one and two. First up, Star Puppy, is an adorable tale of a smart, sweet Baresh Yipwag puppy who brings two romantically challenged humans together and puts them onto a terrorist plot. Rorrn is a Vash Nadah prince who leaves the palace to follow his dreams to be a military star pilot as part of the fleet who patrol the frontier worlds under Earth's oversight. He loves his fellow pilot, Trysh, but she resists his efforts to court her. Trysh is competing with the exasperatingly charming Rorrn and struggles to resist his flirting efforts with her. He isn't serious and besides, after her high class military hero dad abandoned her trailer class mom and wanted nothing to do with her, she will trust that rather than her heart to the Vash prince. Until a puppy...
Engaging and warmhearted with a tinge of intrigue. Loved that Puppy gets to narrate alongside her 'Tall Ones'.
Star Hero is the second of the two novellas telling the heroic story of Puppy's Yipwag buddy, Bang Bang and his 'Tall Ones'. Bang Bang was a rescue dog for the taciturn Marine, Lt. Lukas Frank, and he happily repaid his companion by bringing him to Star Pilot, Carlynn Riga, in a love at first sight moment. All seems to be going well between the big Marine and the charming star pilot until Lukas' PTSD starts driving a wedge into their relationship when he shuts down and pretends he's fine. It takes Carlynn disappearing while on a mission for Lukas to realize what he stands to lose. Bang Bang must help his Tall Ones find each other once again.
I loved this quick sci-fi military love story with a dog hero matchmaker. It might be short, but is full of excitement and nice development.
Oh, the groan of having to leave the Star series world. I have come to really love it. Those who enjoy lighter, but sexy sci-fi romance should definitely give this series a go.
Love box sets for easy rereading. Though these books flow on, time wise some are spaced really far apart and are not really interlocked, so very easy to read as standalones. I have been a fan of this author for years. Having this author put this series into one box set is an absolute bonus. Having read most of these books out of order, it was wonderful to find them boxed up and in Kindle Unlimited too. All books have been reviewed individually and I won’t copy them here as it would be a very long review. I will say Ms Grant writes a tale that takes you along for the ride and brings your emotions into play. Read through Kindle Unlimited.
This is a good boxed set of sci-fi alien romances. Some of the books were better than others, but all were good. I also enjoyed the two "extra" novellas featuring the alien version of dogs.
One problem I had with all four of the full-length books was that they seemed a bit too long -- I thought they could have been shortened a little, without losing any quality. Overall, the set gets 4 stars from me.
Another minor problem I had with the entire series was that all the aliens were just like humans, except for differences in skin/hair/eye color. It seemed more likely that at least some (if not most) of the aliens would have had more physical differences than that. It made the alien/human romances simpler, but I didn't think it was believable that all the aliens would be so much like humans.
Star Raider, 3.5 stars: This novella served as the introduction to the series. It introduces the Vash Nadah people, and their world, from many thousands of years ago, providing lots of important information about their history and world. I liked it, but would have liked a bit more backstory on the H/h.
Star King, 3.5 stars: This is the first full-length book in the series. It features a mostly likable couple, but I did get a little annoyed with the alien H a few times -- he automatically assumed that the human h abandoned him on purpose after their first meeting, with no evidence to prove that. Once he realized that was not what happened, though, he did get better. One problem I had with this story was that the first meeting of the H/h was very confusing. They were both injured, and she just showed up on his alien world? Much later in the book, it was explained that they were probably both dreaming or having a vision -- but the circumstances of that, and how/why it happened, were never really detailed. That part left me a little confused.
Star Prince, 4 stars: This is the romance of the human stepson of the Star King (who has been made heir to the kingdom), with an alien princess. I liked both him and the h, and thought they were good for each other. I did feel for the h, who felt trapped by the restrictions placed on women from her culture. As technologically advanced as the Vash Nadah were, they were surprisingly backward with their treatment of women, and with their attitudes toward lower economic classes and other races. I liked how their story was resolved, though.
Star Princess, 4 stars: This is the romance of the human stepdaughter of the Star King, with an alien prince from another Vash Nadah kingdom. Their story is a good one, where they both learn to understand each other's cultural differences and how their backgrounds have shaped them. They both come into the relationship with prejudices, but learn to overcome them and fall deeply in love. I actually really liked that the alien H was the one who changed the most, and did not expect the h to completely adapt to his world.
Star Champion, 4.5 stars: This is the romance of an alien prince with a commoner alien woman who his culture would have considered beneath him. In the beginning, I wasn't sure I would like the H, simply because of his actions in previous books, but he redeems himself pretty quickly. I liked that he was willing to fight the customs of his people, by allowing a woman to play on his sports team -- especially since he was still trying to recover his own reputation from his earlier mistakes. I actually thought his transformation was the best, and the most surprising, of all the alien characters.
Star Heroes # 1, 4 stars: This novella is about how a human/alien couple was brought together by an alien version of a dog (Puppy), who was incredibly smart. I loved the way some of it was written from Puppy's viewpoint, and that his intelligence was so obvious. The way he detected a bomb, with no specialized training, was amazing.
Star Heroes # 2, 4 stars: This is a novella about how a human couple was brought together by an alien version of a dog (Bang-Bang), who was incredibly smart and also seemed to have some psychic abilities. I loved the way some of it was written from Bang-Bang's viewpoint, and that his abilities were so obvious. The way he got the couple together and later helped to save their lives, with no specialized training, was amazing..
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Such great, well-edited story telling and world building, in addition to the romance! I love space operas, and this series is no disappointment in that department. These stories are really about how wonderful men find and woo women into their lives, finding mutual love and respect (not domination, as you find in many Sci-fi romance novels). Did I mention, there are intergalactic wars, political maneuvering, royals, family drama, clash of the classes, clash of the sexes, space travel, nature, city life, slums, beaches, deserts, storms, dancing, swimming, drinking, capitalism, sports, fighter planes and space craft, motorcycles, hover cars, and porches, cell phones, and galactic real time coms...? The men are intelligent, deep, sexy, and adoring—what’s not to love?!
The cover art doesn’t do this series justice. As you may imagine from the images, yes, there are intimate scenes, but Susan Grant puts so much more into her writing than just sex—the plots are extremely compelling. Plus, “Alien Romance” as listed in the description doesn’t portray these books correctly—Grant writes about humans spread through the known galaxy, on distant worlds, not “aliens.” I’m just saying, don’t judge these books by their covers. They are soooo much more than alien romance novels!
These stories are wonderful. Reading them in the order of this series made the most sense since Star Raider explains their entire code of ethics. The Vash world is an eleven-thousand-year epic, honorable, family oriented, warrior/protector group of 8 clans across the universe. The stories bring up an ongoing theme of whether traditions should be maintained without qurstion or altered to mold to modern times, personal happiness and peaceful integration with people of Earth.
Each story left me wanting more, but most of the characters have a satisfactory conclusion to whatever their initial conflicts were. Although all these books were fun, entertaining page turners, my favorite of the series is Star Champion which has similarities to Mulan and then a Pygmalion (My Fair Lady) quality. It could have had different twists to the plot, but I liked how it was written with the woman as the strong warrior.
Memorable parts that I will be thinking about for a long time, for instance, riding giant snails (like Dr Doolittle!), Muffin's name and quiet nature (small parts of multiple stories), Uncle Yul, and weddings from the perspective of alien-dogs.
I don't usually purchase books outside of KU but instinct told me to this time and I am so glad I did.Every book is different but simply connected to the previous one, I recommend that you read the first book and then you will automatically slide into the next. These books are so well and smoothly written you become engrossed in the storyline and become part of it. I didn't want them to end but they did and I am looking to read more of this author. As things are happening in this world at this time these storylines become more possible and if this happens I hope there are heroes around as are in these books! Incredibly well written with such detail. I am completely addictive to reading more. Thank you Susan for a memoriable few days of good reading😊 Chewie
I absolutely loved this! Strong characters, and not only the male but the female ones as well, good plots and a brilliant narration style plus a good portion of humour makes these books an absolute joy to read. Some stereotypes were shown, but with a twinkle in the eye, or so it seemed to me. Even the villains were likeable! If you like sci-fi mixed with romance, actual plots and some humour, you will not go wrong here. And this boxed set with 7 books (some longer, some shorter) will give you hours of reading pleasure on over 1500 pages. Absolutely brilliant author!
I really enjoy the author’s history of the Vash Nadah Trade Federation and how Earth becomes a small but significant influencer, changing the Federation one attitude at a time. For a technologically backward and less-than-affluent frontier world, Earth and its rambunctious peoples do seem to insist that an ancient empire live up to its own ideals (with a few tweaks). Not bad, Earth – we are so not the final frontier!
Loved each one of these, even the last two dog-POV tales, which initially made me groan but were quickly evident to be nice additions to the main stories.
The "alien" angle is never overdone, just approached in a logical way as we branch out beyond our worlds I have to say I'm disappointed to see we manage to come off as ignorant arseholes. Not surprised, just bummed.
The author has created an interesting universe, and story concepts are appealing to me, but for me the characters weren't well developed. There were character arcs, but they were told to me more than shown. The steam level was mid to high range and the sex scenes were well done - however, sexual encounters are no substitution for authentic interaction.
What a great set! I really loved being able to follow the growth of the Trade Federation and its people all in one place! Each story has strong heroes and heroines with a variety of challenges, but also romance and great HEAs. The last two feature pets and are a little shorter, but have the same strong characters and HEA. Don’t miss these great stories!
This story was riveting. I love that the story moved to different points in time. You saw the beginning and hoe early actions affected life centuries after. The lives of individuals from different class and hoe each was affected. Life always moves and status is not as important as honor.
I almost read these books individually but I’m glad I decided to read the set so I could just uninterruptedly read all of them through one after another. One can tell a good series from the sadness felt when each book ends. The characters that Susan Grant crafts are so realistic that they feel like beloved family. You just want the stories to never end!
From first to last...a great set of stories. World/galaxy building, suspense (in some), romance in all...good job. I did skip back and forth a little, but none of the stories disappointed me. Worth the read.
A slew of engrossing Sexy alien men and women finding love and happiness which makes me happy too. Fiction, bah, I enjoy losing myself in the possibilities and the intelligent dog-like creatures that matchmake too.
I would need a whole book to say how utterly absorbing these tale are. Clever situations, intensely real people and it sucks you right in. Complex, riveting and beyond eXcellent. Gotta read this!
Overall I enjoyed the stories. Each one was slightly different and unique. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the short stories at the end. There was a good balance of action and romance. Also with a decent amount of character development.
This series was a roller-coaster of emotions. Each couple's story presenting challenges that required character growth from both parties. I also loved how the characters keep showing up in other stories in the series. A really great read
Entertaining. The author avoids most of the tired old memes. (aka/The Big Misunderstanding, etc.) There is occasional rough language & fairly graphic sex scenes.
Star Raider, ***** Star King, ***** Star Prince, ***** Star Rogue, ***** Star Champion, ***** Star Puppy, ***** Star Hero***** Love this collection of great stories:)
