"Listen to me brother, you said it in your speech." Doug scanned and found the line he wanted. "I have known the luxury of freedom all of my life. The freedom earned by those who have served before me." "That's my favorite line," Doug continued. "I like it because it's true. The luxury of freedom. Freedom earned. And now it's our generation's turn, and you are that representative. My brave brother, the Warrior of Indian City." Dave smiled. After a moment, Doug added, "It really comes down to this. Grandpa froze and starved so we can enjoy the simple pleasures of being together and laughing. Dad left part of his soul in the Mekong Delta for us to have Christmas Eve parties and toys on our birthdays. The full measure of devotion." In this epic chronicle, Douglas Veverka pays tribute to his family's American experience through their story of service, struggle, and sacrifice.
Heartwarming story! 3 generations of a close and devoted family, their powerful love for each other and the book states it well. The sacrificing and patriotism throughout each generation, and the belief that we are guided by our faith. Very much enjoyed!
I read this just before carrying the stone and story of Army SSGT David Veverka for The Summit Project in Baxter State Park. Touching story. I felt so much heart in reading this book and could feel the love and the loss. Thank you.
