I never should have fooled around with my brother's best friend...

Emerson

Everyone thinks they know who I am. I'm the TV star who fell in love with her co-star, Wesley Rich.
But it wasn't real. It was a life designed to entertain millions of watchers each Monday night. A life I had no control over.
Until my past came to visit...

All it took was one night.
One night to relive my past.
One night to forget my future.

With someone who'd been there all along...

Logan

Soccer is my life--it's in my blood.
I train hard, I play hard, and I win. Nothing breaks my focus.

Except Emerson. Every Monday night.
She's an obsession I can't seem to shake.

I don't know what was harder: hiding how I feel about his sister from my best friend, or watching the woman I want live a life with someone else.

Finished this book out of sheer stubbornness, completely predictable

There were no surprises in this book. I could predict the entire outcome and that just bored me. I only continued with it is because I was hoping to be wrong.

Often you watch the reality TV stars lives and think "I could do that" but then what we don't see is the behind cameras and the pressure that being on camera all the time and having all your dirty laundry, secrets aired for the world to see - that is what can break relationships and put so much pressure on you to be perfect. For Emerson, her life seemed to be going down the right track especially when her reality TV star boyfriend Wesley proposed to her. The thing is though that the last few months, their relationship had been on the rocks and now Emerson is faced with the tabloids that Wesley was caught cheating on her with not one but two hookers and drugs were involved. Emerson needs time to think and has come home to visit, where her twin brother and his best friend Logan are here with their news. Emerson and Logan have always been close, and as Emerson's life starts to crash down around her, Logan is there to pick up the pieces. However what happens when Logan and Emerson sleep together and the sparks/chemistry are still as strong as ever? The pair would keep it a secret as it could ruin not only their careers but also their family dynamics if it were to get out. What will happen though when Emerson returns to her reality, and the TV producers want Wesley and Emerson to act as nothing has occurred and the wedding is still on. With two guys vying for her attention and the world always watching her every move, who will Emerson choose - her Prince Charming and Reality TV fiance Wesley or the boy next door and best friend, Logan ?

Bad Boy Player is a brothers best friend romance. Emmy is a reality star in the US and her brother Ash is a famous soccer star in England. Ash’s best friend Logan is also a famous soccer star on the same team. They grew up together so Logan has always been a part of their family. Great story low angst. I love this authors writing style. I’ve read her other series and I’m so connected to her style.

Hoo, boy.... I probably, in all good conscience, shouldn't even be writing this review, because, I admit it, I have not finished the book and may never finish it. This is one of only three books I can remember in my ENTIRE life that I haven't read from cover to cover. I don't want to be mean, but, seriously, how is Ms. Masen a best-selling author? While the premise of the story is intriguing--a reality-TV star finds out her co-star and fiance has cheated on her--and it has some likable tropes--frenemies to lovers, childhood crush--the actual writing absolutely kills the story.

Where to start...? Okay, either Ms. Masen is an inexperienced writer, with some good ideas, or she's a good writer, who doesn't edit (or apparently even re-read) her works, before unleashing them on the public. There are NUMEROUS comma errors, and, just when I got use to the dearth of punctuation, she threw a comma in, where it had no business being. She words things...oddly, and I don't think it's because she's Australian. Like, 'he drove his eyes lazily over her.' "Driving something is, like, the opposite of lazy. A driving force. Maybe Australian's drive their eyes. I don't know. A couple of times, I couldn't even figure out what she meant.

Then there's the scene, where Emmy, the h, and Logan, the H, end up in a lake at night. This scene really encapsulates the problems with the entire book (or what I read of it anyway). First, it says that Emmy jumps in the lake, UNaware of the creatures, which lurk in it. But she's obviously aware of them, because we are reading her point of view. Then, Logan's hand strokes her bare skin, getting a handful of her panties. Which is it? Bare skin or panties? This kind of confusion occurs other places, as when Emmy finds the temptation to throw her iPad across her room too great to resist...but doesn't throw the iPad. So, it wasn't really too great to resist, was it? Back to the lake scene, Emmy throws herself into Logan's arms, wrapping her legs around his waist, then, a few sentences later, it is stated that they stood face-to-face, with no mention of Emmy moving position. This is also a recurrent, though not frequent, problem.

Unnecessary and inappropriate italics. First, they were used for thoughts. Okay, great! Then for sentences, which were whispered. Erm, all right. Then, for absolutely no reason that I could discern. I could have italicized that last sentence to denote my absolute incredulity, but I really did it, just to show how distracting it is.

Then, there is 'that.' The word 'that.' Ms. Masen overuses it and overuses it incorrectly in almost every single dependent clause she writes, eschewing the use of 'who,' 'whom,' and 'which,' not to mention the commas, which (not 'that') should have preceded them. An occasional use of 'that' instead of 'which' would have been understandable, but this goes far beyond that (ha!).

But, what really ruined this book for me was the inept handling of verb tense. Pick a freaking tense and stick to it! Tense would change mid-paragraph, even in mid-sentence, and Ms. Masen has absolutely no clue how to write a past event, being related in the present tense. Her whole grasp on tense is shaky, at best. And it was the tense issue, which made me give up on the book, yet, ironically, gave me the biggest laugh I've had yet this week (it's only Tuesday). Logan is regretting a break-up, but, as usual, Ms. Masen doesn't have a handle on tenses, so it's not written in past-perfect tense or even past tense. Then, Logan has one of those 'oh well, it's in the past' moments, and says to himself, "Past. F***ing. Tense." Oh, my God! I laughed so hard, because there wasn't even any f***ing past tense in the paragraph, describing the situation, which occurred IN THE PAST! Sooooo ironic!

I kept reading for another ten percent, just because I enjoyed that so much. But, eventually, the continuous editing in my head jerked me out of the story one too many times, and I gave up. I know that some readers aren't as picky about those sorts of things, but this was really egregious. If you don't mind flip-flopping between present and past tense, with no rhyme or reason, you will probably like this book. It has engaging characters and good pacing. Other than that, it's a hot mess.

I love this drama-filled romance between childhood friends Emerson and Logan who have become a a world famous reality star and soccer star respectively. It's about how fame can ruin even the closest, most meaningful relationships and I enjoyed seeing the pair go from despising each other to needing each other on a base level. Seeing them mess up made for an interesting and compelling read that was difficult to put down. 5 stars.

Logan has been Emmy's brother's best friend since forever. So much so, that he is just part of the family.
Until one night everything changes between Logan and Emmy.

I really enjoy reading brother's best friend trope stories and this one is great.

There's angst, friends- with-benefits and secret dating.
It's also nice and smutty 🥵🥰

Great easy read and I'll be looking at getting some more books from Kat in the future.

This book has a really interesting premise. Emerson Chase is a reality TV star, and the book opens with an on screen proposal from her boyfriend and co-star, Wesley. Meanwhile, her brother’s best friend, Logan Carrington, has been watching the show, and is being torn apart watching the girl he’s always desired, marry someone else. That’s what it says on the back of the book, but it’s false advertising. At the start of the book Logan doesn’t desire Emerson (Emmy), he doesn’t watch the show and he’s actually in love with someone else (Louisa, who feels like a character that should have been removed after the first draft). Emmy goes home for a weekend early on in the novel (like Chapter Two) and something dramatic happens that makes her run from her on screen relationship, straight into the arms of Logan. What follows is 300 odd pages of too-ing and fro-ing, screwing, arguing and a very unsatisfying HEA.
It is so disappointing, as this book has one of my favourite romance tropes of all time, the brother’s best friend. The angst, hiding in cupboards so the brother doesn’t find out and the general inevitably of them getting together because the pull of their attraction is just too strong. It’s all too good. Except the reason it is so good is because of the intimacy between the two characters. There is usually emtoional intimacy and caring love that develops before the sexual love and intimacy. The characters have seen each other in weak points and triumphs and have genuinely cared from each other along the way. Seeing each other differently as they age and develop is icing on an emotionally satisfying cake. Add in some delayed gratification and it’s the stuff dreams are made of.
In ‘Kicking Reality’ you never get that sense of care and intimacy. When they aren’t acting on their clear physical attraction, they don’t seem to like each other that much. They call each other names like “man-whore” and “slut” and not in a friendly banter way, in a mean way. Even during sex, they weren’t particularly emotionally intimate There isn’t any self-control and therefore no delayed gratification. So all the benefits of the trope were lost.

Kicking Reality by Kat T. Masen

Emerson Chase has lived in the spotlight through a reality T.V. show, and now soon to be married to handsome, smooth talker Wesley Rich. Everything was scripted with T’s crossed and I’s dotted as cameras trained on her and the relationship 24/7. Until word hit that Wes wasn’t as faithful as it seemed. As magazines and paparazzi’s get more dirt about Wesley’s side piece, Emerson escapes back home. It was suppose to help her get a break from all the flashing lights and cameras in her face, but instead she comes face to face with her childhood friend. Logan.

What could possibly go wrong… right?

Kicking Reality was an interesting story, but I can’t help, but also roll my eyes. A lot of mix feelings throughout the read. Perhaps, I’m being picky, but it’s just how I felt when reading this story. However, I did enjoy the easy friendship/ banter that went on between the two characters as you got to know them. Especially seeing Emerson away from the lights and camera, for the most part. It’s sorta hard for both, reality and sports star to fully get peace and privacy… With that being said, I don’t feel like their relationship (as they built one) was exactly healthy. Overall, the story was good and had me interested for the most part.

This book really annoyed me, most of the male characters were really degrading to women and their view of relationships and how women should be treated was horrible. I felt like there was no character development for any of the characters and the romance and how they fell in love was never explained it kind of just happened, the only reason I finished this book was that I just hate not finishing books. Also the writing wasn't the best in my opinion either but I am sure it is for someone else. This is not a hate comment this is just my opinion and this obviously changes from person to person 💛

This Is a really good book from Kat T. Masen. Emerson is a reality tv star that's engaged to her costar Wesley and is used to having her life run by her team. She finds living life in front of the camera is becoming harder and harder. She thinks Wesley is her only salvation only to find out he has been cheating on her with another woman when he is caught by the hungry paparazzi who made sure to let the news fly. When Emerson heads home to escape the heavy attack of the paparazzi, and while there she happens to spend some time with her brother and their childhood friend Logan. Growing up the three of them were always together and up to mischief together. Logan has been around for as long as she can remember but he has always been like a brother to her, until now... Emerson and Logan have this love/hate relationship but Logan sees how Emerson needs support during this trying time Logan is there to help get her mind off her troubles. Emerson and Logan have this intense sexual chemistry and I loved reading how their relationship goes. This is a hot falling for your brother's best friend story with the added twist of the reality show dramarama, Logan and Emerson have to go thru a lot of drama and angst to get their HEA but what a great romance it is. There is drama, tension, heartbreak, heartache, angst, forbidden love , passion and love. This is a great story and I cant wait to see what Ms. Masen has coming up next.

My Rating: 4.5 stars *****

This is my first book from Kat T. Masen and it certainly won't be my last. I thought it was written well and the flow was very smooth and easy. I will admit up front that the italicization of dialogue did annoy me at first but the story sucked me in and I eventually didn't even notice it anymore.

What I really enjoyed about this story is the fact that Emerson is in a reality show that started with real feelings. When things went south quickly, she is left to continue with the show. We get to see just how difficult things can be when your in that type of situation.

I enjoyed both Emerson and Logan. They are both strong and hard headed. They also have huge hearts. I wanted more of the bossy Logan because let's me honest, it's HOT!

We've had the falling for your brother's best friend story before but I think with the added drama of the reality show, it sets this book apart from some of the others. Logan and Emerson have to go through a lot of drama and heart ache to end up where they do.

"You make me crazy. You make me thing that nothing else in the world matters. Not soccer...nothing. I hate you for it."

Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more stuff by Kat T. Masen. If you are looking for a childhood friends to lovers story with some fun banter, a crazy twin bother who has zero filter and two people fighting hard for love, then this is the story for you.

I loved this book. Emerson is a tv reality star that's engaged to co star Wesley and is used to having her life dictated to her by her team. Living her life in front of the cameras is harder and more scripted than it looks and she's growing to dislike it. On a rare trip back home, she spends some time with her brother and their childhood friend Logan. Growing up the three of them were always together and up to mischief and I loved how they were when they were back together. I liked the family dynamics in this book. Emersons family reacts like my own would probably do and I loved the close bond she shares with her mum.

Professional footballer Logan comes across as a bit of a man whore but he does have a heart in there somewhere. When Emerson gets some shocking news, Logan is there to help take her mind off it. With a love hate relationship, thousands of miles between them and Emersons personal life imploding, the last thing she needs is this new sexual chemistry between them.

I've read all Kat T Masens other books and the one thing that I love about Kat's characters is that they're real. They have flaws and bad habits just like we do. They make mistakes and you're not going to like them all the time. There's going to be times you get frustrated, when you roll your eyes, when you want to shake some sense into them. And that's what makes it so much easier to connect with them.

If you've read Kats previous books there are some familiar faces that pop up briefly and one hell of a jaw dropping bombshell that floored me. It played on my mind all the way through this book and I'm still not sure how I feel about that just been thrown in there (I'm torn between not been surprised because it's Kat and she likes to do the unpredictable and wanting to be slightly stalkerish until I get more details).

Ms Masen does it again.

Only she would take a reality TV star and match them up with a UK soccer star and let the chips fall where they may.

I have never wanted a character to get punched in the balls as much as I did Wesley! He was everything I despised - egotistical, arrogant and a complete ass. How Emerson even faked any kind of relationship with him is beyond me!

And Logan... talk about swoon! Even though Emerson is adamant she isn't interested, whenever she needs someone he's just there!

A book filled with laughs, cringe worthy moments and characters you'll undoubtedly have a strong reaction too!

Enjoyable new adult romance, although most of the characters were immature and fairly unlikeable. So my opinion is "yay" on the author's ability and the story itself but "meh" about the characters. I don't think any of them would actually be capable of having a long-lasting relationship in real life.

3.4 KU I liked where the story was headed but it fell short for me. Reality stars Emerson Chase and Wesley Rich had a tv show but Wesley messed up. Logan Carrington a childhood friend who is best friend with Emmy’s twin Ashley finally figured out yet liked each other but I need more to the store. But give it a try

I loved this book, Kat did an amazing job writing this, it had laughter, angst, heartbreak and some steamy moments.

Emerson was wonderful, she had spine and even when things got too much she still kept on swinging.

Logan, swoon...... even though he had a hardened skin he still had a heart that not many had seen.

Together Emerson and Logan was off the charts with their hate love relationship but it was amazing seeing them come to terms with everything, and I really hope to hear more about them in the future.

The secondary characters were great whether you wanted to punch them or hug them they helped make this book amazing.

Genre: Romance - Comedy, sports (soccer), Reality TV, Brother's Best Friend
Stand-Alone: Yes
Part of a Series: No (At least I don't think so)
POV: Emerson and Logan
Steam Level: Hot
5/5

Welcome to Reality TV. Land of scripted proposals that air quite a bit later than they occurred and nothing is as it seems. This book is hilarious! Emerson has a potty mouth, tells you what she thinks and takes no crap from anyone. I absolutely love main characters like that. Logan is competitive, strong-willed, and calls Emerson out on her crap. Since he's best friends with her twin brother and they have alway hung out together it's not in a mean way - he just knows her too well to fall for some of her shenanigans. Her for his too. The head-butting and slightly forbiddenness of their relationship tests their commitment. Throw in Emerson's "fiance" and Logan's man-whore ways and the sparks of jealousy make Emerson and Logan both combustible and flammable. The use of humor made me snort-laugh a few times throughout the book (that's a good thing). And the Reality TV premise is a fun genre to play with since it's "reality" but scripted and also airs at a later date that when filmed. Mix in social media and nothing is as it appears. Wesley, Emerson's fiance, knows how manipulate social media and the people around him and Emerson has to play along for the sake of the network and rating. While fun this book definitely paints Reality TV in a negative light. If you're looking for a laugh out loud romance with characters who are not afraid to speak their minds with a bit of a potty mouth this Kicking Reality is the book for you. I read this book in just a few hours and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be looking up more of Kat T. Masen's books in the future.

Kicking Reality by Kat T. Masen
“Remembering who you are, 4 stars”

Emmerson is one half of a Hollywood power couple and shes pretty happy with life. Until she sits down and starts evaluating life and what she wants. A quick trip home should ease her fears but it turns out to be a trip with a domino effect. Will she keep up being the woman on Wes’s arm or will she find that she craves more out of life?
Logan has always been a part of Emmy’s life, that’s what happens when your best friend is her twin and the three of you used to do everything together. Yeah, they’ve all came along ways since then, but he hasn’t forgotten where he came from and when he sees Emmy struggling with that he wants to help. Then one phone call changes everything. After one kiss there is no going back. Their lives have an ocean of water between them, so is there a chance of this working?
I really did enjoy Kicking Reality. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes out there. But for me the only thing I didn’t really care for were the games. Depending on your definition of cheating this may fall into that category. Then there was the fact that Emmerson let almost everyone in her professional life walk all over her and I hated it.
Did I want these two together? Yes, but there were parts of the story that kind of sucked with where my moral compass sits. Don’t even get me started on the disaster that is the third leg of Emmy and Logan’s tripod. -insert eye roll- As far as I am tracking this is my first story by Masen and I do plan on trying more of her stuff.
So, if you’re in the mood for a book that isn’t so black and white then Kicking Reality maybe it for you.

Kicking Reality by Kat T. Masen is a friends to lovers romance. Logan and Emerson will drive you up the wall with happiness, sexiness and angst! This was a fun, flirty and addictive journey with twists and turns that I devoured in one sitting!

Emerson Chase lives in the spotlight on a reality TV show, engaged to Wesley Rich. Scripted to a T and followed by cameras 24/7 is becoming a little too much for her. Word hits that Wes has a side piece, the paparazzi swarms, so Emerson escapes back home only to come face to face with Logan, her childhood friend. Logan, talented soccer player with a cocky attitude, comes to help when her life blows up, but can she take another highly sexual relationship? Especially one with someone whom she’s known for so long?

Both have been friends for eternity, times are changing, feelings and emotions are escalating making it harder for their attraction for one another to be contained. As their emotions soar, buttons are pushed, which comes the wonderful angst that makes you turn those pages faster!

Kats books are raw and real. With all her wonderful and flawless books; her secondary characters play a major role that round out the story. Her characters and scenarios are ones that could be an everyday experience. Her characters have flaws and mistakes which makes it so much more relatable to the reader. You will find yourself staying up late to finish the book to find out the conclusion between Emerson and Logan! In continuation to Logan and Emerson, I wonder who will get the next story…

I freaking loved this book!

Brilliant story,so different and refreshing!
This story blew me away, not my normal read and that's what made it even my delicious and exciting to sink my eyes and teeth into.

Firstly the leading characters are an explosion of colour, they are characters you can tell are so invested in their author needing their Author to tell their story. Emerson,Ashley and Logan are beautiful written.I wish I could have been inside this authors head when her character's were telling her their stories as she typed it all down.
Too life the characters come alive, they become people you feel you know.
I love how this story makes you feel invested in there lives,I was swept off my feet with love, lust, anger, sadness and the reality of reality!
There is a brilliance in this book it has the most beautiful moments that you will resonate with and feel the warm fuzzies!
That close to home heart feeling, then the moment of love, real love when nothing else matters that heightened feeling of excitement, beautiful butterflies that make your tummy tingle and a smile like the Cheshire Cat.
That moment is something everyone will connect with male or female,I thank this author for the great feeling this book gave me and it was filled with such tasteful naughtiness that had me.........I can't even describe how it made me feel,It was just that damn good!

~You want to read this baby or your so missing out~

I was a bit torn on how I felt about this book. I completely loved the premise, but it felt a bit too much like watching Laguna Beach or The Hills. I really enjoyed Emerson - she was quite feisty and a ballbuster. Love a female character who isn't afraid to be herself. I was proud of a lot of her decisions.

I really wished we could have gotten more into Logan's head. He was by far my favorite of the story. I couldn't get the idea of his leg tattoos out of my head. Logan was super passionate and always quick with an innuendo or smile. His fire matched Emerson's proving there is a thin line between love and hate.

However, when I finished the book, I still felt like I didn't really know Logan or Emerson, let alone any of the secondary characters. In fact, I felt like I missed quite a lot on the characters, like missing some episodes of a favorite show and trying to piece things together. There are quite a few bombshells in the book which were essential to the storyline, but they didn't feel complete to me. Without giving any spoilers, all I'll say is Ash.

I really do like this author's writing style and will certainly pick up her future books. My only hope is to have some of the storylines filled in a bit more.
