Kosztolányi was born in Szabadka (Subotica) in 1885, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but which now lies in northern Serbia. The city serves as a model for the fictional town of Sárszeg, in which he set his novel Skylark as well as The Golden Kite. Kosztolányi studied at the University of Budapest, where he met the poets Mihály Babits and Gyula Juhász, and then for a short time in Vienna before quitting and becoming a journalist--a profession he stayed with for the rest of his life. In 1908, he replaces the poet Endre Ady, who had left for Paris, as a reporter for a Budapest daily. In 1910, his first volume of poems The Complaints of a Poor Little Child brought nationwide success and marked the beginning of a prolific period in which he published a book nearly every year. In 1936, he died from cancer of the palate.
The literary journal Nyugat (Hungarian for "West"), which played an invaluable role in the revitalization of Hungarian literature, was founded in 1908 and Kosztolányi was an early contributor, part of what is often called the "first Nyugat generation", publishing mainly in poetry.
Starting in the 1920s he wrote novels, short stories, and short prose works, including Nero, the Bloody Poet (to the German edition of which Thomas Mann wrote the introduction), Skylark, The Golden Kite and Anna Édes. In 1924 he published a volume of verse harkening back to his early work, entitled The Complaints of the Sad Man.
Kosztolányi also produced literary translations in Hungarian, such as (from English, at least) Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", "The Winter's Tale", Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland", Thornton Wilder's "The Bridge of San Luis Rey", Lord Alfred Douglas' memoirs on Oscar Wilde and Rudyard Kipling's "If—". He was the first authentic translator of Rilke's poetry, and he worked a Hungarian masterpiece after Paul Valéry's "Cimetiere Marin".

Sok minden kavargott a fejemben olvasás közben: a pedagógusok mindenkori megítélése, a humanizmus és annak kudarca, szellem és anyag szembenállása – mindenekelőtt pedig az, hogy milyen pontosan ábrázolta Kosztolányi az erőszak megítélését egy zárt közösségben. Mellékhatásként intenzív hányinger előfordulhat.
Ebben a regényben (ahogyan a mai Magyaroszágon is) akár tisztel valaki egy pedagógust, akár gyűlöli, ezek az érzések a legritkább esetben szólnak magának a pedagógusnak mint személyiségnek. Egy fogalomnak inkább, egy intézménynek. A nagybetűs Tekintélyszemélynek, aki a közoktatás feltalálása óta minden ember életében létezik. Hivatásos felnőtt, megtestesítője mindannak, amit a tanítványai egytől kilencvenkilenc éves korig egy felnőttől elvárnak. Illetve dehogy egy felnőttől. A mindenható Úristentől.

Het verhaal van een zelfzekere hautaine leraar van een gymnasium die door de vlucht van zijn dochter en een rammeling van studenten die een onvoldoende kregen , tot zelfmoord wordt gedreven . Mooie psychologische schets, goed en vlot geschreven ;
Eerst dacht ik dat hem om een boek in het genre van de campusroman was ... maar naar het einde toe is het eerder een psychologisch drama die zich ook buiten de campus afspeelt.

The timelessness and complexity of the theme and the virtuosity with which Kosztolányi shapes it into a story; the writing style—calm yet inspired, straightforward yet meticulous, realistic yet not mundane; the fine psychological portrayal of diverse characters—these are just some of the things that make this book a true masterpiece.
Personally, what appeals to me most about The Golden Kite is the general tone—this very specific Pannonian melancholy that gently flows around, almost palpable, contained in the summer air, evoking tragedy that is hard and painful, yet beautiful at the same time.
The only questionable thing about this novel is whether the chapters that follow professor Novàk’s death are excessive or not. While reading those final pages, I couldn’t help feeling they’re spoiling the whole thing, but I guess Kosztolányi just felt the need to additionally emphasize the vainness of the smalltownish circle of existence, going further down the timeline, seeing into the futile lives of his daughter and some former students (provincial conscience, after all, is what ultimately led Novàk to commit suicide).
Since the novel begins with a (benign) gunshot (the gun goes off signaling the beginning of a race), making Novàk’s fatal gunshot the closing scene of the book would make even more sense—in symbolic terms, but also for the fact that the suicide is depicted masterfully (perhaps the most powerful description of suicide in literature I have ever encountered—not exactly the best recommendation for a book, but I just can’t help noticing).

Creo que he leído una traducción mejorable. En algunos momentos he sentido una cierta confusión temporal: algunas acciones se narraban en pretérito imperfecto, como si fuesen acciones repetidas en el tiempo (cantaba), cuando en realidad, por contexto, tenía más sentido que se hubiesen narrado en pretérito perfecto, como si fuesen acciones puntuales (cantó ). Lo he buscado y he visto que en húngaro solo hay un tiempo verbal para el pasado así que corresponde al traductor optar en español por el pretérito perfecto o el imperfecto. Diría que la traducción que yo he leído no es muy fina en ese aspecto.

Si tuviese que venderla diría que es una especie de Stoner pero más coral, más dramática, más reflexiva e igualmente conmovedora.
Puntos fuertes: el trazado nítido de los personajes y el retrato realista de las relaciones profesor - alumno.
Mención especial para el personaje de la hija del profesor, fascinante y repugnante al mismo tiempo (¿machismo? ¿misoginia?). Tiene una escena inolvidable con un doctor, ella en cama aparentemente enferma y él intentando descubrir qué le pasa, que parece sacada de El exorcista (exagero, probablemente el parecido solo está en mi cabeza).

Gimnáziumi tanárként nem tudom úgy olvasni, mintha nem lennék gimnáziumi irodalomtanár.
(Aki Novákohoz hasonlóan hosszabb névre tett szert…)
Tudom olvasni a regényt regényként, ám tudom olvasni példázatként, parabolaként, intelemként, pszichoanalitikus szövegként, kordokumentumként, társadalmat reprezentáló műként is, Hilda megszabadulásaként, Novák Antal tragédiájaként, Novák Antal ügyeként, Novák Antal sorsaként is.
Vagy másként.
De mindenképp olvasnám valamiként valamiért.

Kosztolanyi este un scriitor si poet reprezentativ al literaturii maghiare. Imi aduc aminte ca in liceu am invatat "Edes Anna" si mi-a placut foarte mult, de fapt toti colegii mei fusesera entuziasmati de carte. Daca reusiti sa o gasiti merita citita, e profunda si asta este ceea ce il face special pe autor - profunzimea si calitatea scrisului.
"Aranysarkany" a aparut in 1926 iar actiunea sa se desfasoara intr-o mica localitate de provincie. Este despre un grup de elevi de clasa a 8-a, in frunte cu Vili Liszner, un stralucit atlet. Urmarim de asemenea si viata profesorilor, mai ales a profesorului de matematica si stiinte, Antal Novak si a fetei sale, frumoasa Hilda. Toate acestea sub atenta supraveghere si "imbratisare", de acolo sus de unde e inaltat de catre elevi, a zmeului de aur ce parca vegheaza asupra scolii.
Este un roman ce trezeste amintiri si nu numai, trezeste din fiecare cititor copilul, elevul, studentul, indragostitul, strengarul, amintindu-ne de viata de adolescent cu emotiile examenului maturitatii, cu toate experientele care ne-au format si care au facut din noi adulti.
Personajele sunt punctul forte al cartii - Vili este un vlajgan bun la sport insa dezastruos la invatatura, are 20 de ani si este tot in clasa a 8-a. Tatal sau, un negustor bogat, este disperat sa-l vada absolvind cumva. El ajunge antieroul cartii insa nu este nici aratat cu degetul, nici judecat, ci autorul ne lasa sa tragem noi insine concluziile.
Hilda este indragostita din orice roman care-si incearca farmecele ducand baietii la pierzanie, mai ales pe Tibor. Acesta este indragostit nebuneste de ea, are suflet de gentil, de aristocrat. Stie ca fata mai umbla si cu altii dar nu poate trai fara ea:
"Aici, in toate este ea si totul inseamna dragoste, prima, sfanta si prosteasca dragoste, fata de care restul este nimicnicie..."
Ultimul si cel mai impresionant personaj este profesorul Antal Novak, figura pe care n-o s-o uiti niciodata, genul de profesor iubit si admirat de elevi dar si de care le este frica. Cititorul se va atasa de el fiind un om si un dascal exceptional.
Novak are foarte multa constiinta, totul este pe sentiment la el. Faptul ca esueaza in educarea fiicei sale care fuge de acasa cu Tibor, faptul ca da gres si cu Vili, care se dovedeste a fi un repetent si un bataus, e fatal pentru el ca profesor, ca om, ca orice. Esueaza pe toate planurile in viata - in iubire, ca parinte, in cariera, in meserie (a vrut sa devina om de stiinta) si nu-i mai ramane nimic.
Ultimele cateva pagini sunt atat de triste incat ca cititor aproape ca te doare fizic. Am simtit ca as fi vrut sa-l iau in brate, sa-i alin cumva durerea si sa-i spun ca maretia e in interior, nu neaparat in realizari, bunuri sau distinctii. Si ca a fost un profesor desavarsit pentru ca uite ce lectie de umanitate ne-a predat.
O carte care iti sfasie sufletul si mintea. Cititi-o asadar, acesta este singurul meu indemn.

Nagyon megkapó, emberi történet ez. Tetszett, ahogy bemutatta azt, hogy nem létezik tökéletes tanár, tökéletes gondolkodó, aki mindenkivel képes "elbánni", aki mindenkivel képes szót érteni... és hogy ebbe hogy pusztul bele valaki, aki erre törekszik egész életében, és aki arra büszke, hogy mekkora tudással rendelkezik, mennyire jó nevelő és mennyire ő a tökéletes arany középút az oktatásban a kollégái között. Hihetetlen érdekesnek találtam Hilda történetét is - nem tudtam eldönteni, hogy pusztán egy tinédzser volt, akinek a korából adódó zsizsegésével a mindent túlzottan logikai módon megoldani akaró apja nem tudott elbírni, vagy tényleg hisztérikus volt. És pont ez tetszett benne.
A mínusz fél csillag az írási stílusnak szólt, illetve annak egyes elemeinek... Novák ruházatának leírása marha vontatottra és már-már röhejesre sikerült.

Ironically enough, i have noticed this book at a Spanish bookstore- translated.
Then, since i am familiar with most of the author`s work, i have asked one of my friends to bring a copy for me when they visited.
This novel was also set at the same city as Pacsirta, hence the enviroment was already "in front of my eyes". This time however, a whole lot of new characters were introduced which i really enjoyed.
Without giving any spoilers - according to my assumption, we tend to be used to happy endings, and the "good guys" to be rewarded- but this story went differently. This is much appreciated by me though, since just like in real life, it does not always end up that way.
Then, since i am familiar with most of the author`s work, i have asked one of my friends to bring a copy for me when they visited.

Może nie „Ptaszyna”, ale nietrudno było dać się porwać do początków XX wieku na austro-węgierską prowincję, by wśród puszt pożyć przez chwilę skomplikowanym dramatem miejscowego nauczyciela, jego niewdzięcznych (?) uczniów oraz córki nieszczęśliwej, bo zamkniętej w konwenansach społeczności i epoki. Także Pepike - usłużnej samotnej kuzynki, mojej ulubienicy. Jeśli można stopniować, to pisanie Kosztolányiego stanowi wyraz najwyższej urody. Tak już się nie napisze.

Kosztolányi fue profesor de Sándor Marai. En la novela cuenta la vida de un profesor que intenta inculcar en sus alumnos y en su hija bondad y nobleza del alma. ¿La fuerza vital es desagradecida? ¿Los jóvenes, unos egoístas?

Interesting book. I do not really understand why we have to read books with such a sad ending all the time in school, still the writing was great and the characters fleshed-out.

Szkoła jako ponadczasowe źródło cierpień (trochę żartuję, ale może nie tak do końca). Do przyswajania w dwugłosie z filmem Gábora Reisza "Wytłumaczenie wszystkiego".

Wederom een goede roman van Kosztolanyi. Zeldzaam hoe constant hij schrijft. Bij elke gelezen roman twijfel ik of deze met 4 of 5 sterren moet worden beloond. Ook deze roman zit stilistisch perfect in elkaar. Kosztolanyi schrijft fantastisch, met prachtige beeldspraak en fraaie karakterbeschrijvingen. Omdat de schrijver de roman zo uit zijn mouw lijkt te hebben geschud mist er voor mij toch iets aan zijn roman(s). Het is alsof je op een afstand mag kijken naar een geregisseerd verhaal. Het niveau dat Sandor Marai (leerling van..) haalt is veel minder constant, ondanks dat weet hij in zijn goede romans dichterbij te komen. Marai lijkt door schade en schande wijsheden ontdekt te hebben. Het is alsof Kosztolanyi de zinnen moeiteloos op papier heeft gezet. Dat komt ook door de schrijfstijl die hij hanteert. Hij zet de karakters in zijn romans neer en reflecteert nergens. Tot een beoordeling van het gedrag van zijn personages komt het nooit. De verteller is tamelijk objectief. Daarom kunnen zijn romans soms wat afstandelijk overkomen. In De gouden vlieger is de karakterschets van docent Novak typerend voor het gehele oeuvre van Kosztolanyi. De docent natuurkunde is tragisch en tegelijkertijd lachwekkend (volgens de schrijver: zoals ieder mens). Als ons gebeurtenissen overkomen die we met onze copingstrategie niet de baas kunnen, veranderen we in lachwekkende en tragische wezens.
