Mabel and her friends are police recruits in Leicester, England, where they are currently receiving their training in this particular area of work. But, on one occasion while on patrol, Mabel happens to come across a stranger, who, after performing introductions, makes one such proposition to her, which she is unable to resist, irrespective of her current commitments.
When she begins the new job, she discovers that she is starting to love her new charge. The only problem that presents itself before her is the disturbing influence of her employer, who causes in her principled and normal existence many unavoidable complexities.
The events that follow thereafter bring forth many facts into the open, thus creating a series of unfathomable situations, which not only surprises Mabel but also brings out a completely different facet to her personality.
The Strange Encounter takes you on a journey of a strong tidal wave of emotions that invade her simple existence, followed by days and months of anguish, intensity, uncertainty, and frustration.
Delve deeper to witness a climax when she begins to discover, with the passage of time, that her tender feelings are not unrequited.
The Strange Encounter by Duriya Kasubhai is a contemporary romance fiction set in England. It focuses on a young woman, Mabel, who is training along with other friends to be a policewoman. However, her life takes a turn, for the better, when she stumbles upon Lord Brodwell. The encounter, as strange as it was, would give rise to a tantalizing love story.
The book starts off with a quick pace and everything seems to be rushing in fewer words. However, after some time, we find things getting settled, not to the point of distillation though. I liked how the author weaved the story because the transition of Mabel from a woman working under the sun to the one taking care of a child in a lavish setting is smooth. I specifically liked how she ended up establishing a smooth connection with the child, who lived with the lack of motherly affection.
As the story progresses, Mabel and Lord Brodwell fall in love that develops gradually and steamily. The author took care in crafting the scenes of brimming love and passion. However, I personally found them overwhelming. Probably, the detailed narrative springing up repeatedly made the story drag unnecessarily. It might also be because I've read similar haters to lovers trope and found it repetitive in this book. Moreover, I didn’t like some aspects of Mabel. While she represents a woman of a warm heart, she also portrays herself as a desperate woman lacking her ground. Now, this could be a very personal take but I genuinely dislike characters that fall short of holding on their ground. Additionally, the book demands strict editing to get it rid of visible typographical errors.
In a nutshell, The Strange Encounter would be a good pick for those interested in romance for its intricate detailing and polished writing. I do look forward to reading a variety of works by the author.
• 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐢 is a master of 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. In my opinion, "𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑" is an intense read; it takes place in 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 and follows the journey of 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 who end up falling in love. ☕
• We typically find the hero's journey of 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 and 𝐫𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 to be 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. And because of this plot, I adore 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥'𝐬 character. 🌤️
• 𝐀 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞! How romantic. I am getting butterflies over this 🦋. The emotions, sensations, tension, and frustration all fit in well with the circumstances. The author accurately depicted the tense situation, which has a proper impact on the entire situation. 🍻
• 𝐌𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥, a charming woman with 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥, a lovable fictional character, will make you smile. Although simple, the ground is 𝐞𝐱𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜. However, I feel that some of the points are carried on needlessly because they are unable to fully address the plot's resentment. 🧋
• Put this book on your tbr list if you enjoy sizzling novels and would like to read another one 😩✨️.
The book is a debut novel yet it was well thought out. There were surprising moments in the story which I didn't expect. Though, the author did use a lot of unnecessary complex words, which didn't seem fitting for the vernacular of the characters. It was a bit hazy on the details and in my opinion needed a heavy hand of dialogue editing. There were paragraphs on paragraphs of dialogues which is off-putting for many readers. The language was a bit too formal to my liking, it did make me question the time setting of the novel as well.
The character development of the main characters were well represented. Mabel did make me proud in many places. There were a mixture of feelings from me side regarding the other characters. The story touched a lot of complex and sensitive topics, like abuse in a well thought of way.
“Love is never unwanted. There is always a secret need for love in every individual’s heart, however hard he may try to deny”
Have you ever met someone and felt like you guys can’t get along but somehow they became a very important part of your life??
‘The Strange Encounter’ is a romance fiction and debut work of Duriya Kasubhai. This book will introduce you to the charismatic love story of Mabel and the stranger. Mabel being police recruited in Leicester, never ever thought in the wildest dreams of her that her life will cross path with a stranger and things will change forever. Mabel is an independent and confident girl and fully dedicated to her job. She is beautiful, lovable, and passionate about her work and life. Curious to know how did the spark took place between Mabel and that stranger.
The story starts with Mabel and her friends heading on their temporary assignment of following a politician’s wife and ensuring her safety. While doing her temporary job one fine day she came across a stranger with literally no knowledge that he is going to be her future employer and no matter how many commitments Mabel had in her hand, she cannot deny the job proposal of that Stranger. Everything was going great. Mabel was excited and determined about the new responsibility that she had been allotted but there was one thing that was constantly disturbing. The presence of her new employer always influences Mabel in certain uncomfortable ways. She always felt that her normal existence is being invaded yet she feels a hint of warm emotions in her heart. It was really exciting to witness how this story unfolds itself.
Being a debut work, it’s really commendable how Duriya has managed to present this story in an exciting and fresh manner. The plot as a whole was a little bit expected but the narration was continuously making the excitement on high. Every character in this book, along with the protagonists had their own description and a proper reason behind such characterization. Few things that didn’t work for me were, I felt that the story was dragging itself at a few places which could have been eradicated by a little bit of editing and omission here and there. Also, few situations were kind of repetitive and others, where proper description and picturization could have been done, were left flat. These are my personal opinion and may vary from readers to readers. Altogether, this book will certainly not disappoint romance lovers and definitely worth your time.
• 🌸Plot: Mabel is a police recruit in Leicester. She meets a stranger who makes a proposition with her. Despite her current commitments, she agrees for a new job. However, she faces a disturbing influence from her employer. It's romantic fiction and hates to love story. • • 🌸It’s the debut novel of the author and the way she has taken us to the end of the story is appreciating and commendable. The characters are well-developed. I loved the character of Mabel a lot. The storyline was really good. The perfect blending of words, make it look so appealing to the readers. Language is really simple and engaging. In the starting, the book seems to be slow-paced, however as soon as it proceeded the pace becomes fast. I enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend this book to everyone. • •
The strange encounter is a strange tale of love and strong emotions. The best part about reading it was, it has my favorite trope, yes it has hate to love trope which is definitely my favorite whenever it comes to romance novels. This is exactly the kind of book you need on weekends when you are tired and want to relax with something interesting and very engaging. This book is like a complete power-packed story with a beautiful setting, I love it captures legalities so well, having a legal background. . . The storyline revolves around Mabel a law and order officer who confronts a stranger and their starts her story. Just like the steamy cover, the storyline is steamy too! I really liked the soft narration, nothing felt forced and within no time, I was completely into the story. It is gripping but it is huge, read it slow to enjoy it completely. . . I definitely think this book has the potential to be converted into a movie or a web series because it has drama, romance and everything I look for in a good book! I will definitely recommend it, especially to readers who enjoy romance and thrill, also to beginners who enjoy a swift writing. . Rating: 4🌟
When Mabel is presented with an opportunity that would be professionally viable and make her emotionally content, her only concern is to stay away from the mysterious Lord Brodwell. Soon, she realises that the task is toilsome than she thought and she has to fight harder to steer clear of him. Only question is , does she truly want to stay away? 🌹🌹🌹. The setting of the book was very interesting. The main characters were built well and had a very engaging character arc. This whole book gave me a very regency romance novel feel with Lord Brodwell being such a blasé and Mabel strong headed. Some of their banters were even fun. The romance was built in an easy pace, still I would have liked more zeal in emotions as much there was in passion. 🌹🌹🌹. The side characters were intriguing and even banters between Mabel’s friends was lively. However, the sub-plots with those characters didn’t do anything to add to the main story. Integrating those more seamlessly could have made the whole experience of the whole book more wholesome. 🌹🌹🌹. The narration was extremely admirable for a debut. The emotions of characters were brought out so well. Special mention for the which is attractive and conveys the tone of the book’s theme and characters. 🌹🌹🌹. This book with its entrancing characters and easy storyline can make for a good weekend read. 🌹🌹🌹.
It has those “regal” 4💫💫💫💫 • 👍🏻 Flint and Mabel fit like missing pieces with the adorable John! Lord Brodwell is just...Swooon...😍😋 👍🏻 An awesome plot, seamlessly blended characters and a perfect storyline which is smooth and seductive and regal....you can get lost into it!🤩 👍🏻 The story has love, friendship, loyalty. It has humor and banter, a bit of high handedness and snark too!🥰 👎🏻 The beginning looked monotonous and over cooked with a lot of characters and details that you start floating away amidst it... 👍🏻My recommendation: Donot lose hope with the beginning because your patience will definitely be rewarded! The story slowly reached its peak and was definitely worth reading till the end❤ • If you are into Regal Lords and sassy Milady Romance, this could be your next fix!🤭🖤
2.5/5 Mabel, the protagonist and her friends are police recruits in England. On an ocassion at work, Mabel comes across Flint aka Lord Brodwell. He offers Mabel a job which requires her to stay at his place. Flint has a nephew who is a little disturbed and Mabel has the appropriate skills to help him back to normalcy. Mabel takes up the job and what follows is the influence of her employer who is constantly intimidating her. How would Mabel be able to work under such an employer? Why does he criticize her so much? Read the book to know more. The book is more descriptive than narrative. The language is of moderate level which makes the reading enjoyable. The title and the cover are fine. The dialogues and chapters are lengthy and the plot moves at an slow pace except for the first third of the book. The initial chapters of the story have a whiff of mystery and action which was what I expected more of from the writing combined with romance. There are multiple loose ends in the book which can be improved upon. There were lots of scenes which were expected and didn't add to the storyline. This kind of sidetracks the reader from the main plot. The writing has potential but the plot needs to be worked upon.
What I did enjoy was the change in Flint's behaviour towards Mabel and how decently the sensual scenes have been written. The book is a one time read if you are into descriptive books and enjoy slow paced writing.
This novel is a delightful exploration of love and ambition, centered around a young woman whose life is transformed by a chance encounter with a stranger. As a dedicated police recruit, she faces the challenge of balancing her professional responsibilities with her unexpected feelings for this new love interest. The author does an excellent job of capturing the protagonist’s emotional journey, allowing readers to connect deeply with her struggles and triumphs. The narrative is filled with moments of tension and tenderness that keep readers invested in the story. Each character is well-developed, adding depth to the protagonist’s journey. This book is not just a romance; it’s a thoughtful reflection on personal growth and the power of love.
Duriya’s debut novel The Strange Encounter is a whirlwind of love, uncertainty, and self-discovery. Following Mabel, a confident police recruit in Leicester, the story takes readers on a journey where her professional duties lead her to a mysterious, charismatic stranger who becomes her employer. What begins as a job soon turns into an emotional storm, affecting Mabel’s career, identity, and inner stability. The author has crafted a refreshing take on romance by embedding suspense and moral dilemmas that Mabel must resolve. While some chapters felt stretched, the overall narrative remains engaging and is a wonderful read for those who enjoy complex, character-driven romance.
As I always say I am really a diehard fan for romance novels and this book definitely is one for readers like me who love romance, passion, and an intriguing storyline. The title of the book is apt and the cover is gorgeous. Haters to lovers concept - we have at least once or twice started loving the things or people we used to hate. It's a natural instinct of not feeling comfortable initially with something but with the time we get fond of it due to the situation, circumstances or as we meet tgem every day and hence start loving them. Same is the case of our protagonist. The story begins with Mabel working on a project dedicatedly and then the twist comes when she encounters a stranger for her new job and the story takes shape. . The quirky scene between the stranger (Lord Brodwell) and Mabel are quite sensuous, witty and hooking. The haters to lovers plot is amazingly depicted by the author. The character development of every character is very well developed by the author. The conversations are witty and makes you laugh any second. The sensual writing style adds to the beauty of the storytelling. The incidents are very well portrayed. The antogonists(Mabel's friends) description and incidents felt on and off. Sometimes there was too much unnecessary exaggeration and sometimes it's quite fun. Overall a really beautiful and amazing fiction read and I would really love to read more of author's work! She has a very fluent and beautiful writing style.
This book is a romance novel with a different setting and strong characterisation.
The story is about a woman named Mabel who is a police recruit in Leicester along with her other friends. They are well admired for their work. Mabel suddenly meets a stranger Lord Brodwell who offers her a job that is to look after his nephew who is mentally unstable. She's offered this job due to her knowledge in child psychology. Mabel agrees to the job even though she isn't fond of the rich Brodwell. Slowly she realises the job isn't at all whatbshe thought it would be and has quite a lot of difficulties.
The plot is built in a good way and the characters especially Mabel's friends, uncle were also done with proper care. Each had some kind of story which I liked. I have said before that I got Mills and Boons vibes from the book and I enjoyed it.
The popular hatred to love theme was definitely well handled by the author. It was fun to read their banters.
One thing was that the book sometimes became too descriptive over some matters and that slowed the pace. I would have preferred shorter and crispier writing style there.
I would reccomend this book to readers who are into romantic novels especially those who have a thing for hatred to love plots
I am a kind of novels lover, I love reading the book's which have romance, tragedy, emotions, suspense. For me this book is like full-package to enjoy my weekend, the author has done a fabulous work on this book. . . This book takes us on a strange path which is full of frustration, emotions, anguish. . . In the starting you will fill little bit confusing because it has lots of character but while going forward you will become a part of it, it will immersed you new world, I had been deeply connected with the characters "Lord Brodwell" & "Mabel". . . This book also help me with dealing our day to day problem and given me ideas how to face them. . . Rating 4/5
Sometimes you get attached to a person even without having an intention of doing so.
It was a new genre altogether for me to explore, hate to love, with a bit of sensual stuff. I was nervous and excited to read this and as soon as I finished it, I was left with mixed feelings.
Set in England, this book tells us a story of Mabel, who along with her friends, is working on a temporary assignment. She is a beautiful and young lady with fire in her eyes and with a tongue as sharp as a knife. She is dedicated towards her work and does not fail to live her life to the fullest.
Flint is a handsome man, occupied with his work mostly. He wants someone to take care of his nephew, who he loves the most. John, nephew of Flint, is mentally unstable ( at least for some time ) and fails to do normal chores that people of his age can do in seconds.
Flint offers Mabel to be a care taker of John and bring him back to the normal state. Mabel had done her studies in psychology for quite some time, which helped her in understanding the mind of a child who is alone and insecure. Will Mabel accept this proposal or will she simply deny?
There is no rationality when it comes to why we feel certain things, the way we feel. It is what it is. I loved how well the bond between Mabel and John was shown in this book, filled with emotions and love. Love is unconditional and it doesn't take time to happen. No one can replace a mother but we often come across some humans, who simply can make everything magical just by their presence.
The book starts when Mabel and her friends are working on their current assignment and gradually proceeds towards the main plot. It follows a slow and descriptive narration for almost one third of the book, with long chapters, it felt tiring to follow through the book.
Writing style of this book is neither lucid nor it is difficult, it's in between. This book should be read by people who are fan of "Hate to Love" stories. For me, it was my first time to read this genre so I was clueless about what to expect.
What did not work for me was the exaggeration in some parts of the book and the failed sarcasm in some storylines, especially the scenes when Mabel and her friends were interacting, it sounded so clichéd and annoying.
The idea of this book has so much of potential to move people but because of some annoyance created by characters, it may spoil the mood of readers. Moreover, some emotions felt shallow to me and I was expecting them to be more deeper and pure.
Over all, it was an average read for me. If you love "Enemy to Lover" story, go for it.
Strange Encounter: A Romance Novel This is a romance novel that introduces the heroine Mabel as a young ambitious police recruit whose life is altogether upset by her reclusive and mysterious employer, Lord Brodwell. This book, set against the background of 1970s England, vividly portrays the fight Mabel is going through between her profession and the emotions she has only just started to sow. Brilliant characterization of Mabel makes her relatable strong as she is fragile. The plot is at times dragging itself, but the historic context is what adds depth and what keeps one reading is the tension growing between Mabel and Brodwell. Good friendships in the life of Mabel brought light-hearted moments, but subplots did not tie up very well with the bigger plot. No doubt, it is a first novel with romance and historical intrigue mixed in it that makes it so memorable to anyone interested in tales of love, loyalty, and self-discovery. Overall, The Strange Encounter has been pretty well drafted to grip a reader at its end. 7777 This novel has very effectively narrated the aspiration of a woman to become a policewoman in the 1970s. Professionally as well as personally aspiring with accidental romance with her employer Lord Brodwell, it adds a peculiar flavor to the novel making it both relatable and intriguing with the transition of Mabel. The author has created a personality that can be associated with the reader through the narrative of Mabel's interior struggle between sense of duty and desire. Indeed, although plot development is not equal, the dialogue between Mabel and Brodwell holds enough tension for the reader but lightens it using the funny tone brought in for this novel because of the unrelatableness of Mabel's friends to very important actions. Romance reader, who likes mystery's twist, will love The Strange Encounter cocktail of drama and emotion combined in time. Any first novel in which some serious protagonist is set within an evocative setting should do to spend the good weekend reading on.

My opinion -
The cover of this book is very pretty and The title of the book also matches to the story perfectly.
The story definitely keeps you hooked till the end and I finished this book with around 400 pages in only 2 days.
All characters from the story are very well developed and written. And how cute the little John is ❤️ Loved the sassy nature of Mabel!
For a debut novel the writing style of the author is very impressive and the vocabulary used is vast.
I felt some parts of the story were dragged unnecessarily. Also I wish we could have seen more details about flint like more of his past/work etc.
The overall story is engrossing and perfect for romance lovers and those who loves hate to love romance.
"The Strange Encounter" by Duriya Kasubhai is a contemporary romance set in England. The main character, Mabel, is training to become a policewoman. Her life takes a surprising turn when she meets Lord Brodwell, this mysterious, wealthy guy who pulls her into his world—and into his family life, especially with his young nephew. It’s all very unexpected and, honestly, pretty charming!
Ooh, is there a love story? Absolutely! The romance between Mabel and Lord Brodwell starts slow, with a lot of tension. It’s one of those “enemies to lovers” dynamics, so there’s plenty of chemistry and some fiery exchanges before things get romantic. The relationship takes time to develop, and while it drags a little in places, Mabel’s bold, sassy nature and Brodwell’s mysterious vibe keep things interesting.
How’s the writing? Worth a read? For a debut novel, Kasubhai’s writing is solid! The story is descriptive and gives a nice mix of romance and drama. The side characters add a lot of fun and warmth, even if their stories could be tied into the main plot a bit more. If you’re into love stories with a modern twist on classic romance, it’s a cozy, enjoyable read for the weekend.

Reading this book was such an engaging experience! While the plot was somewhat predictable, the narration was so captivating that it kept me hooked from start to finish. Each character, not just the main ones, was beautifully developed with distinct personalities and well-thought-out backgrounds. I loved how every character’s actions felt purposeful and added meaning to the story. This attention to detail gave the book extra depth, making it much more enjoyable than I initially expected.
Overall, this is beautifully crafted, blending romance, personal growth, and a rich, atmospheric setting. Set against 1970s England, Mable, a sternly serious police recruit, finds herself trapped in an inexplicable love and supernatural bond with enigmatic employer, Lord Brodwell. Here, the reader is constantly burdened with flawless surrender to the tension between Mabel's calling as a professional and her passion for romance with Brodwell, thereby adding new dimensions to her characterization. An excellent historical backdrop weaves in the world of Mable the atmosphere of reality. The author does this in such graphic detail that one can almost view a roller coaster ride before the reader's eyes, drawing Mabel closer to reality in her struggle with conflicting loyalties. The tension inside her relationship with Brodwell will prove enough to keep readers hooked, if nothing else, just for the romance laced with a touch of suspense. But overall, The Strange Encounter comes as a gripping first novel for combining passion and mystery-plot features and makes for a very entertaining challenging read for those who happen to love character-driven romances set against rich historical backdrops.
The Strange Encounter is the most passionate and romantic mystery novel as it gives a tale of an encounter between Mabel, the young police recruit, and her employer, the mysterious Lord Brodwell. 1970s England brings yet another flavor to this novel by catapulting the reader into Mabel's turmoil of fending off her professional duty versus growing feelings. Mabel is indeed a strong-willed woman, full of persistence, but vulnerable towards new emotions, yet still fighting those emotions. What makes her inspiring is just that she's believable, something which cannot be expected from many characters described in literature. Though the pace here is a bit loose, the tension created between Mabel and Brodwell is indeed exciting. The historical setting and Mabel's relationships have also given much depth to the story. However, the side characters do not feel as intimately linked to most of the plot of the novel. This would be one excellent first novel for any romance fan that deals with themes of loyalty and ambition. Generally, The Strange Encounter is a love story that's well-crafted to remain memorable among its readers.
Any book associated with the England of the 1970s fetches along with it massive loads of romance and mystery. This debut novel by the best-selling author has caught all that and narrates an account of determined police recruit Mabel and how her encounter with Lord Brodwell changed the course of her life. The chemistry between them is very vivid, tension between professional aspirations and a desire for Brodwell aptly canvassed by the author. The history setting is so richly painted to give many depth and atmosphere to the story. Tortoises in narration speed occasionally but the emotional depth added by it along with character development of Mabel keeps the readers glued. The lighter moments are coming from her circle of friends, though sometimes incoherent with the overall storytelling. Aside from romance and self-discovery, historical detail will make The Strange Encounter a fulfilling read for aficionados of complicated love stories. Any readers who might want to read romances touching upon the personal dilemmas of the protagonists will therefore enrich this romance in the center with thought and emotion.
The Strange Encounter by Duriya Kasubhai is an thought-provoking novel that blends elements of magical realism with deep emotional exploration. Set in a seemingly ordinary world, the story follows a protagonist who experiences a life-altering encounter that challenges their understanding of reality and their place in it. The story shows up themes of identity, self-discovery, and the human condition. transformation and th The characters are well-developed, and the narrative is introspective, allowing readers to connect with the protagonist's internal journey as much as the external events.
However, while the mystical elements provide an intriguing backdrop, they may feel surreal and somewhat disorienting for readers seeking a more straightforward plot. captivating read for those who enjoy literature that challenges conventions and invites reflection.
In the Strange Encounter, Mabel's ambitions at becoming a police woman are scathed by being forced into the arms of her superior, Lord Brodwell, within this description of the specifically depicted 1970s England. Throughout life, Mable's journey is always a very emotive read in an attempt to balance professional ambitions with growing attraction. Though it becomes draggy at times, yet it's the intricacy of the intense love story between Mabel and Brodwell, that keeps me hooked into it with its historical information. The banter of friends at times, which has made me laugh at places, could still have been well wrapped around the story. The author has quite successfully portrayed the protagonist as vulnerable and tough at the same time; he seems to depict ambition, loyalty, and a quest for self in him. This is just the book that the reader would like-reading deep layered stories as well as some familiar characters to go with a gripping love story full of romance and mystery or even a slice of history.
Mabel is a quite ambitious young policeman recruit whose life gets turned upside down because of Lord Brodwell in this historical romance. As Mabel shares all her experiences firsthand, the reader follows this relationship from her view, as she shows his tension and passion as they act out an intense conflict between duty and desire, making this a real page-turner. This author has very graphically painted the turmoil inside Mabel as he unfolds how she strengthens her inner self while still feeling vulnerable about her emotions. It would seem that the strength in the depth of characterization on Mabel makes the readers interested in the story as it unfolds, though the plot drags at places. The warmth contributed by her friends is purely from there since the subplot could easily have been woven into the main story. For romance enthusiasts who enjoy developed characters and historical settings, this is quite a good read that combines elements of romance, mystery, and coming-of-age into a satisfying read.
