Can two men fake an engagement for the greater good?
Avery Kinkaid has been bowing to his father's will far too long. But when his dad supports anti-LGBTQ legislation, he's had enough. Sen. Kinkaid says things would be different if Avery had a fiancé in the wings. Well, fine: He'll just have to get one.
Rory Fisher is an activist with a heart of gold and nerves of steel. He's not afraid to call Avery on his BS, and that's why Avery knows Rory is the perfect fake fiancé to help him take a stand. If he still feels a little too much for his ex, well, he can shove that down and suck it up to beat his dad at his own game.
Until Rory encourages his most hidden desires. Until he makes Avery feel stronger, braver, and freer than he's ever been.
Loving Rory is easy, but Avery's father won't just sit back and let them have their happily ever after. They will have to fight: for their love, for justice, for a future together.
This is one power struggle they can't afford to lose.

This was a fun and light read that I greatly enjoyed that cleverly finds a fresh spin on the fake marriage trope. I appreciate how this author navigated a difficult subject matter with government interference with individual rights within the confines of a second chance romance.
Both main characters are distinct and original in their own way and are great complements to one another. Both men have an interesting arc throughout the novel and it was exciting to see how everything played out.
This was a great addition to this series and I am excited to see where it goes from here.
3 and 1/2 stars rounded up to 4. I liked the story and thought it was a good 4 star book. Unfortunately for me, I listened to this as an audiobook. It seemed stilted. This is the second audiobook in a row that I haven’t cared for the narration. It’s called buying an author you love without checking the narrator to see if you love them as well.
I was a little disappointed that after all the build up the confrontation with the Senator wasn’t more dramatic, but that certainly didn’t ruin the book for me. I love second chance romances and Avery and Rory were great. Although I personally never wanted to wear makeup or lace underwear I admire a (butch) man like Avery who does. It added to the book rather than being a turn off.
Another enjoyable entry in this series from DJ which all centres around the idea of fake marriages.
Here it's a fake fiance, used as a means to try and encourage a state senator to do the right thing when it comes to legislation which would harm his closeted gay son.
It's also a second chances romance, as Avery and Rory rekindle feelings they had as teenagers at boarding school.
What I liked best about this book though, is that it plays around with ideals of masculinity, of what makes someone not only look masculine, but feel it.
Avery is an All American hero on the outside, with his golden good looks, but he's yearning for more.
Rory, by contrast, is a powerhouse of self-confidence, in his job, his sexuality and his value.
I loved how the narrative took these men on deeply personal journeys as well as the political minefields they had to navigate.
We also get to drop in with Caleb and Julien, who are still totally loved up on Bliss Island.
Rory's family were also awesome and their acceptance of Avery went a long way in helping him to deal with his toxic internalised fears.
The narrative does drag a little towards the end, but I totally understood why it went that way, I think I was just getting a bit impatient to have Avery's dad hung out to dry by then!
A great romance with a nice element of mild lingerie kink which spiced things up wonderfully.
I'm eager to see where the series goes next as there's a fair few available options.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
Wow! I went into it thinking it was going to be a lighthearted read but it was stunningly deep and emotional. It's written in dual POV and can be read as a standalone.
Fake engagement with the one that got away is a recipe for disaster! And I loved every second of it. Rory and Avery are perfect for each. I loved Avery's journey of self acceptance. And Rory was there with him every step of the way. It is written so beautifully and there were moments my heart broke for Avery.
Loved the cameos by Julian and Caleb from the first book. The ending was everything I hoped for and more! Faking a Groom is funny and romantic and super hot. If you love a fake fiancé and second chance romance with a sprinkle of lace and silk, then definitely pick this up!

Wow. This book hit so many emotions for me that I wasn't expecting. My heart broke for Avery, and I wanted so badly to hug him and let him know that he deserved happiness. Rory was such a great match for Avery. I loved how they finally got together for real and how they complemented each other. I loved this.

I started this book because the 'fake boyfriend/fiance' with second chance friends to lovers trope, and let me say I wasn't disappointed at all.
Both characters were lovely and I liked that Caleb & Julien (from the first book in this series) were there too. I haven't read their book yet, but it was really good to see them together, and I loved how they were trying to help Avery and Rory.
Avery's background and the whole history with his father was really heartbreaking to read about. I loved that side of the story, it was really rock solid.
Rory was a cutie, I really loved him too. Rory and Avery's relationship was good, I liked that they got to know each other better this time after their earlier break up. They were young and not ready for this love story, but this time just everything was perfect for them. To fake an engagement, then fall in love for real.
I love fake love stories turning into real ones, and this book was really enjoyable to read. It was easy to read with great characters, the emotions were there, the romance and erotica HOT.
Rarely can an author so vividly bring to life the temperament of characters and endear them to me so completely as DJ Jamison has done in Faking A Groom. This stunning story is amazing and you are not going to want to miss it! My favourite quote from the book shows what a beautiful heart warmer it is: “…caught in this constant struggle between who he was and who he should be.”
Avery is the closeted son of a politician – closeted only because it’s never quite the right time to come out, according to Dad’s judgement of the political stage. Avery is beyond ready to take the step and make that statement. He trusts his father to judge when the time is right so that it doesn’t cause any hiccups in Dad’s political campaigns… although he’s getting tired of waiting.
Rory hasn’t seen Avery for years – not since he was Avery’s little secret back in College. When they meet up again at an event, the chemistry is still there, but this time there’s more to be gained, especially when Avery takes a bold step and proposes marriage on the spot!
This story has many layers: some mystery and intrigue, deception and suspense, but most of all it has love and acceptance. I simply adored the development of the relationship between Avery and Rory. So sweet but realistic and the vulnerability shown by both men is heartwarming and so epically beautiful that it took my breath away.
Faking A Groom is the third book in the Marital Bliss series but completely works as a standalone. I haven’t read the first two books (but will be adding them to my Kindle ASAP) and had no difficulty following along. DJ Jamison has done a brilliant job in showing us a broad range of colourful characters in this hard to put down book. Readers who enjoy character development, a bit of intrigue and suspense and some epic love will adore this story.
While this book is third in the series, it could be read/listened to as a standalone, although the characters from book 1 feature prominently in Faking a Groom, so for maximum enjoyment, you might want to read that one at least.
I really liked Avery and Rory, especially once their 'fake' relationship turned real. There were some portions that dragged a little and were hashed and rehashed, like Avery's relationship with his father. Really, how naive do you have to be not to realize your father is just stringing you along so you do what he wants and not what you need to do? I got it when he was a teen who'd just lost his mom, but at his age, nope, it should've taken less than it did.
Avery and Rory seemed to bring the best out of each other. Rory giving Avery the confidence to be the man he'd been duped into hiding since he was a teen, and Avery giving Rory the push he needed to do something else with his life, something he really enjoyed doing. It didn't hurt that they had great chemistry and were really hot together. ;)
Wyatt Baker did a great job with the narration, his voice is very pleasant and he really suits DJ Jamison's writing style.
I liked that even if it had a similar premise to book 1, to the point that the bad guy was one of the guys' father, it still felt different and fresh. It was a solid, enjoyable addition to the series and I hope there will be more books coming in the future.
Wyatt Baker is a new-to-me narrator, and it usually takes a few books for me to get accustomed to a voice. At times it was difficult to distinguish which MC was speaking as both characters were voiced the same. For me, it's easier to follow along with a story when a narrator uses a different tone or inflection for each main character. Having said that, the narration was more than acceptable. Baker's performance was enjoyable and I would listen to another of book narrated by him.
As for the story, one of my favorite tropes--fake relationship--is the main plot point and is what drew me to this book. Though the writing felt repetitive at times, I thoroughly enjoyed Avery and Rory and the evolution of their relationship. It was sweet how they reconnected years after their high school fling. Avery's dad was an excellent villain. Other minor characters were fleshed out and complimented Avery and Rory's story. I especially loved Rory's family.
Although part of a series, I didn't feel lost at any point during this story. Faking the Groom can absolutely be read as a stand-alone.
In all, I'd recommended this book for anyone who loves fake relationships, found family, and second chances.
***Special thanks to Neon Rainbow ARC Reviews for a copy in exchange for an honest review.***
Ok this author is growing on me. I loved these characters. And I’m a sucker for fake love. This one didn’t disappoint. Two men who hurt each other in the past, work to free their hearts in order to be together. I enjoyed the political side of it,I even enjoyed when I wanted to shake a MC and say stand up already! The smexy was good the writing was good and even though a couple was from the previous book made a few appearances this book is still a standalone. Can’t wait to see what’s next
Faking a Groom is the third book in the Marital Bliss series, but can be read as a stand-alone.
Personally, I think my rating for this book would be higher if I had NOT read the first book in the series, Surprise Groom, with a very similar plot featuring two boyhood friends entering into a fake relationship in order to best an overbearing father with nefarious plans.
Avery has remained closeted because of his father's political career, and it seems there is always a reason Avery stay in the closet just a bit longer, but when Avery learns his father is sponsoring anti-LGBTQ legislation, he reaches out to Rory to enter into a fake engagement to challenge his father into doing the right thing.
Avery has known Rory since boarding school, where Avery had "gone to great pains to ensure most of their school friends thought they hated one another while sneaking sex [...] on the side." Avery walked away from Rory to follow the course his father had laid out for his life, even though "he'd loved Rory Fisher when they were both too young to understand what a special, rare thing they had."
Their fake engagement quickly reignites the flames that had never really gone out between the two men and allows Avery to finally come to terms with his femme side. "There. He looked more like himself. He looked .... gay. And not the man's man kind of gay that his father believed him to be, but the real guy inside him. The one who wanted to sparkle."
Where the story didn't work for me personally was the elegiac pace at which each man comes to terms with their relationship. Things were rehashed .... hashed .... and then rehashed again. At over 350 pages, this book felt too bloated. And there's a Huge Unilaterial Decision which is one of my pet peaves where one character makes a major decision that affects the relationship without telling their partner, because "it has to be this way" or "someday he'll thank me for doing this" ...... aarrggh. Finally, the resolution with Avery's father felt a bit too ... simplistic given the weight and importance it was given throughout the book.
Most reviews of this book have been more forgiving of the items I noted, so I suspect my niggles about the book are entirely my own, and your results may vary. 3 stars for "Faking a Groom" and I look forward to hearing your comments when you read this book.
I received an ARC from IndiGo Marketing and Design in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book in the Marital Bliss series and wow, it was a lot more emotional and heartfelt than I was expecting. It follows, but is so much more than the trope of a fake engagement, this time between former school sweethearts separated due to one MC being far in the closet. Avery is a politicians son, his sexuality acknowledged but kept hidden by his father to further his political ambitions. Rory is a social justice warrior, outspoken and driven but he was never able to completely forget about Avery.
Avery is kept in her closet by his father, but when he finds out dad is about to support anti-lgbtq legislation he finally has had enough and comes up with a desperate plan to hopefully change his fathers mind. The opportunity presents itself with the reintroduction of Rory to his life years after Rory walked away from him. Rory is willing to go along with the fake engagement, to both expose the senator’s support and to save the rights organization he works for.
What really makes the story is the emotional depth of Avery. He is so much more than how he presents as a toppy, masc, privileged man. As the book unfolds we see the sadness, guilt and self loathing Avery carries in him and his inability to break free of his father influence and his own internalized toxic masculinity. He broke my heart! We see his struggle and vulnerabilities as Rory does, getting to know and love who Avery really is and owning his own judgemental mistakes. The building of their relationship is slow, with many ups and downs and sometimes I just wanted to shake Avery and tell him to stand up for himself and Rory to be more patient and try harder to understand Avery’s fears. But it all comes together and they get their very satisfying HEA.
I loved Julien and Caleb from Surprise Groom (the first book in the series) and I was so happy to see this make an appearance. Julien is as irrepressible as always and Caleb is still besotted. And with Julien’s influence we see another facet of Avery’s suppressed personality. I’m a sucker for sparkly lipgloss!
The narration was wonderfully done by Wyatt Baker. His voicing of Avery conveyed his emotional state and you really feel for him. The distinction between the various characters was easy to follow and made listening enjoyable.
I listened to Faking a Groom as an Arc was provided for my honest review but had previously purchased a copy of the book and can honesty recommend both. It can be read as a standalone, but the entire series is delightful to read
I was given a free audio copy from the author and Neon Rainbow to review.
About the narrator: He did a great job. With the different voices and emotion. My rating here is for the plot alone and has no bearing on him. I would definitely recommend the narrator.
I really wanted to like this and there are some great elements. I loved all the moments it was just the 2 MCs. They had great chemistry and so clearly loved each other from the start. That aspect made it a great second chance romance which I love. I loved when they were with Rorys friends who are a fun bunch and when they went to visit Rorys family snd Avery got to see what it truly meant to be loved and excepted.
My heart broke for Rory being broken hearted the first time and I worried it would prob happen again as I was reading. There wasn't a single moment where I felt confident in their relationship so it was like holding my breath waiting for the inevitable.
I wanted to feel bad for Avery. His situation was absolutely heart breaking but I just couldn't sympathize with him at all when he repeatedly just stuck his head in the sand and shut up and took the abuse and constantly allowed himself to be manipulated and controlled. He kept saying repeatedly that he needed to find his backbone and stand up for himself and then he wouldn't and I do mean repeatedly. Past the point of pathetic, frustrating and annoying.
It was ridiculous absurd that Avery just gives in and assumed there's no way out. Like for goodness sakes he couldn't use the same tactics his father used and catch him in his lies and blackmail him right back. The blurb was very deceiving. It makes it sound like once his father passed that bill that he was ready to throw down and that his relationship was going to give him the confidence to be tough so I was looking forward to this book. Sadly that just does not happen at all and it was disappointing.
I have not read any other book in this series. Not sure if I will. Hopefully they are alot better than this. I have only read one other book by DJ called 5 fakes dates and I really liked it.
Another day, another series by D.J. Jamison. This time around, Martial Bliss, which this series is anything but (at least at first--who needs "traditional" love/marriage when you can fake-dating trope your way into true love and martial bliss). The third and final book is titled: "Faking A Groom".
["Can a fake engagement help Avery embrace his true desires?
Avery Kinkaid has been repressing his deepest urges for as long as he can remember. For his father, he has remained in the closet as a gay man. Out of fear, he's buried his craving for pretty clothes, makeup, and anything else deemed too femme. But when his father takes it too far--supporting a senate bill that undermines everything Avery stands for--he's ready to call his bluff.
All he needs is a groom.
Rory Fisher--a spirited activist who's not afraid of a fight--is perfect for the role of fake fiancé. Except, Avery doesn't anticipate just how much he's missed his ex or how deeply he still wants him.
Rory brings Avery’s desires into the light and loves not just the exterior Avery shows to the world but his true self underneath. He makes Avery feel stronger, braver, and freer than he’s ever been. But Avery's father won't just sit back and let them have their happily ever after. Avery will have to find the strength to fight for what he loves -- for Rory's sake and his own."]
I reeeeeeeeeally dragged my feet reading this one. I just...it was incredibly hard to deal with all of Senator Kinkaid's homophobic bullshit and heartbreaking to read all of the toxic bullshit that Avery had been brainwashed into believing.
All of that drama made the relationship angst feel like a penny in a well. Though, it turned out to be a hot-as-fuck penny. ;)
Trigger Warnings (should have probably added some to the first novel's review, by bad): homophobia, hate-speech, political bullshit, blackmail, internalized-homophobia, toxic familial relationships, suicide, etc #surprisegroom #wranglingagroom #nobodysgroom #fakingagroom #djjamison #maritalbliss #maritalblissseries #books #queerbooks #queererotica #bodicerippers #bookstagram #bookphotography #ilovebooks
Wow!! This is a great book , this is about Avery and Rory, the one who got away, this is a fake fiancé, second chance at love, poor Avery he comes out a long time ago to his father who is a Senator and always finds a way to manipulate Avery into staying in the closet, Avery wants to enjoy being out, find a boyfriend and wear pretty thinks, but he knows that his father will be mad and he doesn’t want to lose him because it’s just him and his father, Rory and Avery meet again in a event, Rory is the Director of an organization that helps people who needs legal aid call Equal Justices League, he loves his job and is proud to be part of this organization. Avery discovered his father supports an anti-LGBT legislation and asked him to not to vote in favor because it will affects LGBT people to adopt, but his father tells him that the only way to withdraw his vote is if Avery has a fiancé, so Here is where Avery ask Rory to be is fake fiancé. But they need to come to an agreement that works for both of them, Rory needs money to help more people and Avery wants to be able to be out and no more hiding . So they agreed to fake their engagement, Avery goes to live with Rory and at first Rory wants to resist Avery but one weekend on Bliss Island and Rory see the real Avery a shy guy who wants to be free to express the person who he really wants to be. Rory and Avery journey is really hard with lots of disappointments and regrets, but I love that Rory is there to encourages Avery in being who he wants to be and nothing is wrong. There’s great moments with Rory’s family that helps Avery and Rory encouragement helps him to become a the man he always wants to be and accept himself. This series is quickly becoming my favorite, I love that they got their HEA and so happy that we catch up with some others characters of previous books! Can’t wait for more! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Faking A Groom, the third book in the Marital Bliss series is a great fake boyfriend romance. This DJ Jamison had me consumed throughout.
Rory and Avery get their second chance in this book. From the beginning, the emotions come alive with the long lost love feeling. Of course, there's plenty of tension and unresolved feelings as well. There's frustration and political motivations at play. And then there's an agreement to become fake fiancees. Personally, I love the way it all develops.
This is a story of Avery having always been forced into the closet. All for political reasons. This is a story of Avery trying to be real to himself, as he learns he doesn't have to live under his father's shadow. And, wow, Rory has an interesting past, with a loving family who all fight to help those who can't help themselves. His family fights for equal rites and more and it's wonderful. And yes, it's a total contrast to Avery's family, as Avery's father works against gay rites, despite knowing his son is gay.
Not only is Avery gay, but he has a femme side that he's longing to explore. He likes silky clothes and makeup. This is a story with stockings, garters, and lace panties. It's all wonderful sexy and fun to read as with Rory, he finally finds someone who can support and encourage him. He's always been conservative on the outside, even though he's anything but. I love that Rory helps him to find himself.
Written in alternating 3rd person pov, the writing is great. The characters are complex and have a compelling journey. The pace and tone are enjoyable and I was left loving every second of this tale. I found myself experiencing all the emotions along with the men and I couldn't put this book down.
Faking a Groom is fantastic book. I definitely recommend this DJ Jamison read the next time you're in the mood for a fake fiancee romance. And if you love lingerie wearing men, this is a must read.
Damn, Avery's character broke my heart. Living in the closet under the guidance of his father, he finally hits a wall when possible legislation comes through denying the rights to minority groups. His drunken plan to get himself a fake fiance brings Rory back into his life. Avery will use this relationship to uncover the legislation and Rory can use it to gain support and financial backing for the charity group he works for. Win-win if they can get through this with no feelings or acting on their attraction that they first shared in back at school which ended when Avery wouldn't come out so Rory walked away. Rory is fully justified in how he feels about what happened at school but as time progresses and he gets to see a whole new side to Avery, he learns just how hurt the other man is on the inside. He has constant feelings of self doubt, low self worth and struggles to accept who he truly wants to be. It's beautiful to read that Avery finally has support and encouragement from someone he can trust and show his true self to, occasionally bringing tears to my eyes, happy and sad. They have definitely grown since school and their wants and needs are now more aligned than ever but they have a real fight on their hands when it comes to Avery's father, the Senator, a real horrible piece of work! Luckily Rory's family are amazing and show Avery what family is supposed to feel like with love, care and acceptance freely given. It was also good getting to hear from Caleb and Julien again (book 1 of the series). They offer support and advice, even giving Avery a much needed boost whilst they have a getaway to Bliss Island. This book can be read as a stand alone, even with character crossover between books. Another great fake relationship story from DJ Jamison. Definitely a recommended read. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Avery, Avery, Avery … I really didn’t expect to swoon for him as hard as I did. He is broken and hurting and trying to find the courage to be on the outside what he feels on the inside. He finally decides to push back against his domineering father and calls upon the least likely candidate to help: his high school love, Rory, who Avery left behind when he ran away from who he is out of fear.
Rory is a great character: open, accepting, encouraging and willing to fight for what he believes in. He’s the perfect support for Avery, who is digging deep to find love, mainly for himself, but also from a partner - namely Rory. Particularly in the early parts of the book, Avery’s isolation and loneliness are so evident and poignant, your heart can’t help but break for him. There’s a line in particular where Avery meets Rory’s cat, a stray that Rory took in, and Avery remarks how that is just like Rory, with his heart of gold always willing to take in and love the cast-offs, the loners and those who need it. Avery then whispers to the cat, “He probably won’t keep me though.” My heart. That monologue epitomizes Avery - alone, desperate to be seen and loved and not believing that anyone would want to. We then watch him timidly come out of his shell over the course of the book … it gets you right in the feels.
There’s nothing particularly novel about the premise or even the events that transpire in this book, but the characters are so well crafted and the romance is so well done, it really makes the book something altogether different. I highly recommend you give this a read so you can meet and fall for Avery too. You do not have to read the prior books first, although you might prefer reading Surprise Groom before reading this since the main characters show up prominently here and many of the events of Surprise Groom are referenced.
Faking a Groom is the third book in the Martial Bliss series and could easily be read as a standalone; however, I strongly recommend the entire series. This book is a contemporary romance with a second-chance-love trope, forbidden/fake relationship trope, and friends-to-lovers trope, which are all set against a political backdrop. The politics, while an important plot device, are not overwhelming and do not take over the book. D.J. Jamison has written a beautiful love story with a sweet (and hard-earned!) ending. There was angst, suspense, and then that beautiful taste of sweet victory when the main characters overcome all their obstacles. I was cheering for Avery and Rory and felt so satisfied when they got their happy ending.
The characters for Faking a Groom are really interesting and well crafted. Avery is a complex man with competing loyalties to his father, his career, and his heart. Avery had to grapple with these different elements and figure out what was truly important to him—this took sacrifice and a lot of growth. Rory was awesome. I enjoyed his spirit and dedication, but also appreciated his softer side. He, too, had to reflect on his own priorities and determine what he truly wanted in his future. Together, these two main characters had a beautiful romance (with some amazing, hot sex scenes).
The audiobook was narrated by Wyatt Baker who did a great job. Wyatt has a really pleasant narrative voice that worked really well for this book. He narrated each character distinctly and made it very easy to follow along in the story. I also enjoyed his performance which strikes a nice balance between performative but not over-the-top. The audiobook production was well done and made for a great listening experience.
This is the third in a series, now I won't lie, I did NOT read the previous stories. Caleb and Julian did come up and were in this quite a bit, I have no clue who the other book is about.. maybe those characters didn't speak out to me IDK. Anyways, I didn't think it did any harm not to read the other books and that is rare for me to say. Rory is Caleb's friend and that's where the tie in is. Avery and Rory had a thing way back in the day when they were both in school. Avery super in the closet while Rory was not; of course the two were at complete odds at that point and time and ending up going separate ways. Now, Avery's father is still in politics and while seemingly ok with his son's lifestyle still insists on him staying locked up tight in that closet. When Avery gets wind of a bill that will have negative impact on the LGBTQ community, he begs his father to reconsider. When that does no good, Avery is desperate to think of something that will change his mind. Avery's grand scheme: find a fiancée and force his father to reconsider. The fiancée being Rory, Avery's one that got away. But will Avery's plan even work? Will his father reconsider? What happens when Avery and Rory both end up with feelings that make this more real than fake? Will Avery still be faking a groom?
I love these fake groom stories, the whole scheme of it, going into this for show only but then the feelings creep up and surprise they fall in love. This had a whole lot of drama, not overly done, but some was a bit heart breaking. Really good naughty bits, and some jumping off the page chemistry. I give this 4 stars.
I admit I almost didn't read the books - A lesson reminder don't judge a book by its cover. I almost overlooked the books due to the cover. It just didn't capture my attention. Don't make the same mistake grab the books!
What a gift inside. Surprise Groom - A M/M romance. Caleb is in love with his Island Bliss and is the wedding & resort owner. He is delt a tough hand, he finally has the reins to take control after his father passes. Unfortunately the mountain of debt & a legal claim has him under the thumb. Can one out fox a master, perhaps with a plan & a best friend! Juilian is sassy, smart & it should make you grateful those that love you (come at 2am if you call no questions asked) you know the ones - hold them closer! This is for all the times Evil won - karma evil goes down!
Wrangling a Groom - this story 100% just got me, I was so moved - this is a love story Wyatt that reminds you even in these times equality is not accepted or equal everywhere. The hardship, torment & future holds this one worth the read. Lost love, old grudges can anything change? Diego really that had me really worried for Wyatt. Communication absolutely the key. The roller coaster - worth the fight for what you love!
No spoilers but if Hallmark makes you emotional then this is way level up from there. Hallmark makes you dissapointd, then this is for you - tough, emotional & cover to cover it will capture you! V2, S3
Story: 3 stars. I like a good fake husband/fiancé story. This is so similar to L.A Witts's Husband Gambit its scary. I liked that one better, maybe because of the audio. Back to that later... First I need to shout to the void that I an so tired of the dragging out forever that last bump in the road! Like in television and movies the counter on the bomb take 10-20 minutes to go form 10 seconds to the last 2 or 3 seconds they stop the bomb. In this book an hour and a half. It is not that thrillig! We all know they stop that bomb, or in this case get back together... don't drag it out so much that it gets anoying...
Now over to the audio: It is not the worst, I must admitt that. But the narration of Rory was not good. The book says Rory stood on a soapbox, and that must have been the only que Wyatt Baker took from it. Because All His Lines Was Narrated With What I Can Only Describe As A Capital Letter On Every Word. An With A Somewhat Fake Or Forced Jovial Tone I Get From People How Want To Sell Me Things They Don't Want To Sell And They Know I Don't Want. Something that do not give to book any help. I felt the other caracter wispered and had feelings in their dialogue but not Royce. He did not wisper when he did, I to remind me often that he was not a unsensetive bastard because he had a forced jovial dialogue and the book came after with ... he wispered. Not a problem if you read it yourself, but I prefer audio. And this was not a good narration, just because of this. Either give none og the caracters feelings in their dialogue or all. Otherwise you might not cheer on the couple because on is a fake, unsensitive bastard who can't read the room with sosial ques....
This was another good read in the Marital Bliss series, although some of it was really heart breaking too. All the books in this series contain a fake marriage trope ( always a winner hehe ) with each of the marriages becoming real in their own way. Avery and Rory are old high school sweethearts who didn't exactly part on good terms. The reason for their "fake engagement " is simple. Rory will use the Avery Kincaid name to score donations to help his work to continue to help the unfortunate. Avery will get to come out to the public in the only way his politician father will allow, in a committed relationship. This all sounds good in theory right? Wrong!
Not only do real feelings start to form, surprise surprise!, but Avery's dad is not going to let his son go flaunting his self without a fight. The man isn't afraid to get dirty. He also isn't afraid to issue threats. It was sad to see how much Avery suffered hiding himself away at the bequest of his father. It was slowly killing him inside. I loved how Rory worked to coax him into being his real self, not the mask he wore for everyone else. Every time Avery would show a little bit of who he was I wanted to cheer for him! Baby steps with Rory holding his hand the entire way...until he didn't have to. When Avery was finally ready to stand on his own I was so proud of him right along with Rory. Those two complemented each other just right and I was satisfied with how everything ended up.

What do you get when you mix an anti-LGBTQ Senator father, years of being forced to deny your true self, and some alcohol? The answer is you get a fake fiance. Avery's story is heartbreaking, so prepare yourself for some possible tear shedding. I despise his father, which honestly doesn't deserve the honor of that title, because a father he is not. Rory is Avery's ex from high school, and he is amazing. He is self-confident, secure in his knowledge of who he is, and has an incredible family that support him fully. Things did not end well back in high school for these guys, so it was interesting to witness them coming back together for this ruse. Both had good reasons for why they were entering into this fake engagement, and you can tell that they both really have pure hearts. I loved that Rory was able to help show Avery that there's nothing wrong with who he is, that he didn't need to hide anymore. Rory's family, man I loved them for how they accepted Avery, made him feel welcome to be himself, showed him the love and support he didn't receive from his own father. That's how family is supposed to be. And when Avery found his strength to stand up for himself, to refuse to be shoved to the back of a closet anymore, I was so happy for him. These guys couldn't have been more perfect for each other, and their happiness is well deserved.
2.5 stars....While there are elements of the story that are interesting the plot was just too slow moving. Additionally, the MCs did not inspire me to want to root for them. They were a bit too whiny and self indulgent for my liking. Fake fiancé and fake marriage tropes are always a hard sell for me and this one is so transparently poorly done that you can see from the start how it’s going to collapse leading to the crisis moment.
I kept hoping for redemption, that at some point we’d see the MCs stand up for themselves and give the villain what he deserves but that just doesn’t come to pass and it is infuriating, especially that Avery allows himself to be so manipulated and that he is so passive about it. His big rebellion is putting on lip gloss?! Really? Likewise, Rory’s reaction to the situation is irritating and meek. Anyone with half a brain could have spun themselves out of the threat posed by Avery’s father and turned the tables on him. It never occurred to Avery to use the record feature on his phone for crying out loud?!
There might have been a bit of a chance at a decent story here but it all just felt to pat and too lacking in imagination.
**I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion.**
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I've read the previous two in this Martial Bliss series so this one is my third read.
A second chance plot. Strong emotions are on about every turn of the page in this one. Politics and parental ambitions play it out here. Avery is out to his parents but isn't allowed by his strong-willed father to come out of the closet; this would upset daddy's lofty political ambitions; a man who as a senator wheels State power. Avery needs to grow a backbone badly. Into Avery's life reenters Rory Fisher and an opportunity presents itself.
At first this seemed kind of a patented plot formula; privileged (Avery) to poor (Rory), friends with benefits, clashed in college, now one looking for help and the other willing to lend a hand in the deception. But after getting into the plot the reader discovers Avery and his fight for his own life and not of his father's inflexibility to make Avery into what dear old dad needs to fulfill his lofty political ambitions. And, don't forget that father who ignores his son's emotional needs. Characters Caleb and Julian from book #1 Surprise Groom make appearances to lend advice and direction. There is justice at the end but only met at a high the final price of ruin; but a HEA for the M/M. I'm leaving a voluntary review for the ARC I received.
This was a fun fake relationship romance set fictionally in my home state of Maine, which I loved!
When Avery’s political father backs a bill that will take some rights away from the LGBTQ community, he scrambles to find a way to make his father see reason. Avery is gay and has come out to his father, but he hasn’t gone public with the truth yet for fear that it will affect his father’s career (and change things for him as well).
Rory was Avery’s college boyfriend, but the relationship sadly ended when Avery refused to come out and wanted to keep the relationship a secret... but the feelings the two share for each other have never truly gone away.
Avery and Rory will fake an engagement, hopefully strong handing Avery’s father to pull out from this new bill and gaining donors for a benefit that Rory has upcoming. Problem solved!!
This is a second chance romance, which I loved. It deals with a lot of homophobia, both external and internal. Avery has to come to terms with who he really is as a person and learn to be able to be comfortable in his own skin with the truth finally out.
Thank you so much to the author and Neon Rainbow for by gifted audio copy of this book. The narration was wonderful and breathed life into these wonderful characters.
I loved this book. Avery in particular is such an intensely complex character. Having spent a lifetime hiding at his politician father's request he is finally done hiding in the shadows. I have such a sweet spot for Avery, trying to break free of the toxic thoughts that his father has been force feeding him since he was a teen proves very difficult. I love how determined he is to be true to himself, not just in his sexuality but in how he expresses it. Rory and Avery were childhood sweethearts but split when Avery was unwilling to come out. When Avery's dad throws his considerable weight behind a bill that would hurt the LGBT+ community the pair decide to fake an engagement to try and derail his plans. As they reconnect Rory realises that he may have been too quick to judge Avery and becomes his biggest supporter. I love the fact that Avery's layers are peeled back bit by bit, we get a real sense of the psychological conditioning that he has been subjected to and watching him slowly overcome the image of what he should be as opposed to who he is. Rory is the best sort of cheerleader, not too pushy but allowing Avery to become more true to himself.
Loooove the tension in this one. Avery and Rory dated secretly in boarding school but Avery's politician father manipulated him into staying in the closet "for now," causing Rory to leave. Years later, Senator Kincaid is still keeping Avery in the closet but now he's supporting a bill that will lead to discrimination of LGBTQ+ people. Avery finally realizes his dad has no plans to ever let him come out and when he runs into Rory at a fundraiser, he comes up with a plan. The two of them will tell his dad they're engaged and if he refuses to remove his support from the bill, they'll go public.
It turns out the senator is a master manipulator, and things never go as well as Rory and Avery hope. They both still have feelings for each other and it's not long before the lines between fake and real start to blur.
🔥: These two are crazy passionate together and their scenes are loving and graphic. So much steam is packed into slowly paced scenes. Rory also gives Avery the courage to embrace his not-so-masculine side. 😆: We get some comic relief along the way as these two get to know each other again. 😭: Your eyes may water a bit as Avery faces some hard truths and starts becoming his real self. His path to self-discovery is so inspiring!
Love this series! I'm sad to say goodbye to it, but it was a hell of a ride. So much emotion and love and romance and ahhh I wish there was more!
