Still trapped in the school, or at least a depressingly real facsimile, seven students are left to figure out who among them committed suicide and set all this into motion. But the revelations are coming far slower than their numbers are dwindling…
Come for the atmosphere, stay for the atmosphere. A School Frozen in Time has lost none of its mysterious aura for its second instalment and builds upon its first volume, while still offering precious little by way of answers.
It does this by focusing entirely on just a couple of the core cast and that’s definitely one way to get us invested before the boom gets lowered. If I had to ding the book for one thing, it’s that it does travel down the well-trod ‘overworked student’ path this time out (though it does make a meal of it)
Oh the brutal pang of unrequited love and not understanding somebody half as well as you think. There’s lots of both here in the first half, the book’s best part, and one fully adorable game of catch. You just can’t help but root for the underdog sometimes. Even when blood starts gushing from their crush.
When half of this pairing vanishes, however, it’s certainly under slightly different circumstances than the initial one from last volume and there’s a big question mark over whether these vanishings are fatal or actual escapes from the nightmare (I mean, it’s a ghost story, we’ll probably never know).
It takes them a little long to reach this point, but the guys finally figure to look outwards for somebody they might have driven to suicide as a group, inadvertently, because they prevented at least one within the group, showing that they can pick up on one another pretty well. And there’s more than a little malice directed towards them.
There is absolutely nothing to detract from the teacher theory, as he looms in the background like a faceless entity this time which makes him even more likely than before. If he’s a misdirect, he’s a very good one.
We end off with a little time travel, but I’m pretty sure that this particular past is immutable and we’re just getting a sneak peek at who’s off the cast page by the end of next volume. Prove me wrong, book!
I’d talk about themes and such, perhaps, but the series is still holding everything too close to its chest to bother speculating, honestly. Right now it seems like some seriously vicious vengeance by person(s) unknown, so not much to work with, really. Some books are journeys, some are rides, this is definitely a ride and a mighty fine one.
4 stars. I’m an utter sucker for any story where a cast is whittled down slowly over time, whether it be murderer or spooky ghost forces. This is no different. Well, maybe a little because I was really bummed by who got taken this time around, which means it was the right choice by the author.
I’m not expecting anything revelatory from this series, but I am expecting to be entertained and it has yet to disappoint.

While I'm still not the biggest fan of this artwork, the story is really, really compelling. I find that this series digs really well into the mindsets of the typical student tropes, like the nerd, the popular one, the sensitive student, etc. And in doing so, we get these sometimes heartbreaking backstories that add more life to the overall plot and bring up more questions for the overall mystery of who ended their life.
Why are these students there? Who is keeping them there?
I can't wait to find out. Also, nice cliffhanger!

It's amazing how many mystery manga make me think about Jean-Paul Sartre's play Huis clos; it probably says more about how much of an impact the play had on me back in high school French class. But nevertheless here I am again, listening to one of the characters' words in my mind as the manga's players worry that they, too, have no exit: Je veux m'en aller, je veux m'en aller...

I read the first instalment a good few months ago, so it took me a while to get back into the story. This prevented me from being fully invested from the beginning, hence the lower rating. However, once I remembered the premise and the characters my interest piqued again and I can't wait to see how the author wraps up the story.

Wow, this just got waaay better with the lore it's trying to set in as well as the other references to other works and "similar events" happening in various countries in the manga.
It had a few cringey aspect but it is very minimal compared to the first book. I'm definitely very intrigue and enjoying this. Things are getting more serious than the first and I love it.

Having set the stage with the disappearance of Mitsuru in the first volume--with only a thick, probably-unsurvivable trail of blood left behind--we're past the "what's going on" atmosphere that left the characters uncomfortable, but not necessarily fearful.
Fear is appropriate now. As one girl points out in the previous book: one of them is going to be next, because if Mitsuru had been the target, the rest would be able to leave the school...and they can't.
They start by considering stories of supernatural disappearances, cases where people disappeared and then reappeared improbable amounts of time later, and what affects these things, considering that perhaps they are all inside (mentally? spiritually?) the person who died. Honestly, this section seemed very clumsily-done to me, and I don't think it's just an issue of translation.
Following in the tradition of Mitsuru from the previous volume, who got to be the focus of flashbacks and given some character development, it's clear who the next target is when another character gets the same treatment. And another--I have to wonder how this series is going to wrap things up, since it started with 8 students and 2 of them are gone by the end of volume 2.
I looked it up, while trying to find a release date for the next volume: there are only 4 books. So either the pace is going to pick up a LOT in the last two books, or...maybe it will wrap itself up badly? I'm afraid, especially since this was a first manga for the artist.
Still, it remains intriguing. The characters are starting to sort things out better, and are second-guessing their initial hypotheses about the causes. As one points out near the end:

* A very in-depth review, read this after you've read Volume 2*
I thought this volume was as equally good or better than volume one. The beginning was kind of dragging with the Langoliers correlations but once we get through that section of the volume and dig into the Shimizu story line, it definitely picks up. I like her back story, it was enough to keep me invested but it was a little repetitive. I think there is a lot of face reaction panels when it isn't always necessary. The art style is not my taste, a little meh but I like when she draws her characters really scared. I lowkey wish it was just a horror manga like Junji Ito, I think that's where she thrives. The Shimizu incident did make me think the "culprit" (for lack of better words) is Takano but then the author took this turn with this long conversation with Takano and Akihiko where it looks like they were spectators to what happened but I'm still skeptical. I don't know how to feel about Mizuki. The way the friendship fell out seems kind of superficial and shallow like if they were that close, why would she not talk to Mizuki if there was a problem? All of that did make me cross Mizuki out entirely though. I have to say the manga ends off on a exciting cliff-hanger with Akihiko that made my overall opinion about the volume way better, making me excited for the next volume. I hope the momentum continues onto the next volume but overall a good volume.

The plot becomes darker in this volume, and unfortunately for the students, they continue to fail to find answers as to why only the eight of them are trapped there. I find this story to be complex with so many layers, because as it unfolds another memory of another student, it shows that sometimes, no matter how close you are with someone, there will always be something that you'll miss from them.
I have no idea how these students are connected to the suicide, but one of the theories is that they might be the cause for the person to jump off, and I cannot help but lean towards that theory most.
There is a scene where 'something' impersonated one of the students and when 'it' gets exposed, the way 'it' turns all bloody and creepy faced really gave me goosebumps.

The Langoliers are going to eat me.
An assortment of students trapped in a school and it appears at least one of them has already disappeared leaving a great smear of blood which more than likely is fatal. When discussing what has been happening to them one student mentions the Langolier Incident to the others (which is not where I was expecting this story was going for sure) that they might be trapped inside...the mind of someone else. Just starting this volume my excitement for the series had begun to plummet with the explanation that at one time an entire airplane was once trapped inside a terrified little girl as though it was surly the most likely scenario and totally natural.
Mind you just because it was theorized by one student and accepted by the others does not mean this is the answer to what is going on seeing as to at least one student has already gone missing before this volume and more are to follow. Then there is the scene with Takano and Shimizu showing whatever controls this world is not constrained to any rules of reality so I guess we will just have to read on if we want to see if the theory pans out. :)

I want to first add a trigger warning as this manga covers suicide. With that being said, I was very impressed that they included the suicide hotline and a warning right in the beginning of the manga. Very well done, as we never know how things may affect people.
In this volume we start to get some Easter eggs thrown our way. A lot of mysterious things start happening and chaos breaks out as our group tries to figure out what exactly is going on
I’ve heard people compare this to The Drifting Classroom, they even make reference to it in the manga, which reminds me, I need to read that ASAP! I really enjoyed this manga. I love stories like these, Psychological Thrillers are my weakness.

Super creepy vibes. It didn’t seem like fantasy, but that they have introduced this concept that some people under great stress can and have sucked other people into their minds is….weird. They’re so matter of fact about it, as if it makes sense. Ok, if the girl swallowed the plane, what made the plane come back out? Now that we’ve seen more of Mizuki’s past, I wonder if it will turn out to be Haru that committed suicide and subsequently is blaming them. That bit of story came out of nowhere, and I’m unclear why the other seven aren’t enough friends with Haru to help her through whatever stupid teenage angst she was experiencing. If Mizuki and she are inseparable, and she’s part of their group, wouldn’t Haru also be? Did they abandon her for Mizuki, who was more visibly struggling?

I feel like I could almost copy and paste my review for the first volume here, mostly because there is not much of an advance in terms of the big mystery. Though I have to say I like the new theory posed at the end, and it seems to be consistent with other things happening here, especially when it comes to Takano and Shimizu.
In any case, I am still enjoying the moody atmosphere and the nuisances of the relations among the different friends and students. And, hopefully, also starting to be a little bit more clear on the who is who of our cast.
Next volume coming soon. And since there are only four in the series, I am expecting things to gear up at least a bit... though I think it will be still enjoyable anyway.

This is the second volume in this series. This is about a group of 8 students that seem to be frozen in school alone. Its on a day when one of them has committed suicide and they don't know what has happened or who it was. It is so mind bending to try and figure out what has happened. I love the psychology aspect of it. I cannot wait to get to the next volume. It seems to be a different student as the main character per volume. Some of the artwork can get a little fuzzy but the story really keeps you intrigued the entire time.

Okay so they're highlighting the individual characters more and yet they're not. We've only got two volumes left and It's almost going too slow for enough fleshing out for me to understand why this is happening. Hoping for more character growth and relationship growth in the next one. And hopefully we'll find out that this specter that's doing this to them isn't as malicious and revenge seeking as it seems right now.

Lots of repeated conjecture in this volume as the students try to solve the how and why of their predicament. I feel like I could enjoy this series more with a more capable artist. Panels and characters are very sterile and washed out (though I suppose the later is intentional to create the “dream” atmosphere) and there is very little movement. The story is interesting, but not interesting enough to overcome the lackluster visuals.

Volume 2 starts out a bit slow, but when I tell you it goes from 0 to 100 in a blink of an eye...I'm not joking. It got heavy fast. And I thought I knew who it was, but now I don't think it can be them.
So glad I bought all 4 volumes at once so I don't have to wait to keep reading.

I thought I knew
I thought I’d figured out who was responsible and who did it, but now I’m back to the beginning with another off my list. Interesting theories are being brought up, and some of the interactions haven’t gone as I expected. I’ll have to wait on books 3 and 4 but I am in it for the rest of the series unless something horrible happens.

Have to deal and fight with inner demons as well as their personal past! With trying to figure out the classmates who took their own life! With Takano and Akihiko just now remembering that they were there at the scene of the crime, has to figure out who they saw! Black and White memories are now shifting back into color itll be not to long until they find out and remember who it was that day!

I’m enjoying the series so far, but am struggling to keep all the characters straight. I’ve had to check back and reference the character sheet at the start a few times while reading. Still an interesting story and the suspense continues to build!

3.5 ✨️ rounded up. This is a fun read. The pacing is really quick and gripping. the story is really dark, but I think the themes are explored well. I don't feel overly connected to any of the characters, though.

Die Geschichte zieht sich für meinen Geschmack etwas. Außerdem fand ich die Rückblicke teilweise schwer zu verstehen, vor allem weil für mich nicht immer eindeutig war, wann ein Rückblick anfängt und wann er wieder endet.
