Personal and Universal Look at Intuitive Eating

I've read this author's other book on binge eating and thought it was very well done. I'm pleased to say that this book is excellent as well and is the perfect adjunct to the other book. It also works for those who do not consider themselves to have problems with binge eating. As in the other book, the author comes across as someone who has worked through this on a personal level and continues to act based on the principles she’s discovered. She also comes across as very compassionate toward the reader who might struggle with different aspects of intuitive eating, like the inherent kindness that is part of it. We are so used to the diet and exercise industry blaming and shaming us, taking a tough stance and asking that we be hard on ourselves and critical of nearly everything we do and eat, that we may not at first feel able to be gentle with ourselves as we embark on a very different way of eating and thinking about food.

The author lays out the rules of intuitive eating over several chapters, covering the basics of where it came from and what it is. Further chapters look at reframing your mindset, dealing with emotional hunger, and making peace with your body. Then she branches out to intuitive exercise, offering a gradual way for those of us who might be sedentary. Although, not everyone can start by taking the stairs! After exercise, the author spends a little time discussing mindful eating, which can certainly help the intuitive approach. Then she gets down to brass tacks talking about meal planning, even including recipes. The last official chapter is on intuitive eating while pregnant, and she's also included a bonus chapter on how to teach your child mindful and intuitive eating. if you're tired of battling it out with food because of your weight or if you seek acceptance of who you are and what you look like despite what society seems to tell you, this book may very well help you on your path.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

It’s great for those who need to understand emotional eating. I found it lacking in the area I need: habit formation. I also understood a lot of it to be replacement “you musts”. For example, instead of working hard to compensate for cheat days, you MUST be kind to yourself and you MUST allow yourself to to make mistakes and take time to learn what works. While I understand the principle, the presentation of such things is equally important and that should be calm and kind, too.

It’s a good summary about Intuitive Eating, but she doesn’t give credit to the authors of the movement.

I didn’t really care for this book on Intuitive Eating. I prefer the one by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch.
