This is a cliffhanger. I'm not a big fan of those and usually will only read them if I know that's what I'm getting into. In this case, not only does the write up not say it's a cliffhanger, it actually says "no cliffhangers". What?! How do you say that when it is definitely a cliffhanger. There is no closure, no happy ending and none of the reviews mentioned that it's a cliffhanger. I was going to give this 3 stars, but then I went back and reread the write up. Since it actually says it's not a cliffhanger, I dropped my rating to 2 stars.

There are a lot of typos. Missing words, extra words, incorrect pronouns, etc. In some cases I made up my own sentence for what made sense. The formatting is incorrect. Instead of one paragraph per speaker, the speaker changes in the middle of a paragraph so you often don't realize who the speaker actually is. I had to go back and re-read several paragraphs to figure out when the speaker changed and who was saying what. This is a really long story for a cliffhanger. You know from the write up that things don't work out with Liam, so why spend so much time on their relationship? This should have been a quick blip, just enough to explain their relationship before moving on. The writer has a fascination with vomiting and cleaning. You would think adults could make it to a toilet and why have it happen so often? And why mention they cleaned the kitchen after each and every meal? We get it. In the beginning, Xander is an asshole to Ava because he loves her. Really? That makes no sense. Ava is quick to think the worst, then quick to forgive after being so upset. This didn't strike me as genuine. I also lost patience with Xander not telling her the truth. I wouldn't have minded, except the author had him decide to tell her over and over then not do it. Without the vomiting, cleaning and details of the relationship with Liam, this book could have easily been 100 pages shorter. Since it's a cliffhanger, it would make sense to make it shorter.

Even with all these issues, I have come to care about Ava and Xander's future. I think they are immature and quick to make stupid decisions, but I want to see how this ends. After over 500 pages and not knowing this was a cliffhanger, that just upsets me. Now I have to decide if I want to read another 1000+ pages to reach the real end because the series has two more books. The reviews for the second book are better, but I think that's because only people who knew what they were getting into kept reading the series.

So now I have to decide if I can grit my teeth through typos, formatting and stupid character decisions, assuming those haven't changed, or just let these characters go. I just finished this book and I'm not sure what I'm going to do. It's really a shame because I think a good editor could have made this a much better story and a warning that this is a cliffhanger would have made a huge difference.

Intriguing read
Wow, this book is worth it!
Do you like a book that is full of twists and turns, up and downs? Then this book is for you! MJ tells a story that is intriguing and consuming. You quickly get drawn into Ava and Xander’s story. It’s as if they have become your friends and you are experiencing every up and down right along with them! Make sure you have tissues because you’re going to need them! There's a cliffhanger! So I can’t wait to read the next two books Ignite and Burn. I want to know how everything will turn out for Ava and Xander!

I tried so hard to like this book, I really did.

I made myself read it from start to finish but I didn't really get into it.

My main problem was that I didn't find the main character very likeable and I couldn't relate to her. I just felt she was really whiny and she fell in love too quickly with barely a distinction between the two men.

I also had a little trouble getting into it as the writing and dialogue seemed a bit stiff at times.

This review is from: Spark: Book 1 (The Heat Series) (Kindle Edition)

An excellent book, with a solid plot and wonderful characters, this book is a little long but with that you get a great story, it has some great plot twists and it keeps you hooked from start to finish.
If you enjoy a romance that keeps you on your toes you will enjoy this book, I can't wait for book 2 in the series.

I received this book as part of her newsletter promotion after thinking it sounded like a great story. Please keep in mind i had an ARC of the book and probably not the final edited version of the book.

I loved the story. I loved the twists and turns. Since i read over 200 books a year, her style of writing is different then what is out there and took me a bit to get use to. Would i have changed things story wise? yes 1 scene i would have just because as a selfish reader i was like what? huh? that would have been interesting to have read that scene. Would I have changed some things in regards to writing style, probably only again i'm a selfish reader and like things my way.

I am already getting ready to read book 2 because the plot is that good. I can't wait to see where these characters go next and see how the author has evolved from her fist novel.

Ava and Xander along with their families are so entwined not only personally but professionally. I love seeing the dynamics not sure between the romance of the 2 main characters but how it effects everyone and everything.

OMG!! Where do I begin? I was offered a chance to get this book and took a chance. I'm always up to try new books as I'm an avid book reader. I had never heard of this author before and I wanted to give her the benefit of giving it my full attention.

Let's just say I received this book early on a Friday morning while at work. I had a free moment and thought I will pick up this book and see what's it's all about. I'm so glad I did but almost wished I didn't at the same time. Needless to say I didn't get much work done that day.

The main characters Ava and Xander to me are great and swoon worthy at times but yet so frustrating. I loved the story line and how their families are intertwined. There are obstacles that must be overcome, family members that want to try to get in the way and much more.

As I finished this book I was like it cannot end here that is not fair. I immediately went and purchased the second book and picked up right where book one left off. If you haven't read this book go and get it and give it a chance you won't be disappointed.

I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
This was a great start to a series. I enjoyed the suspense in this book so much that I didn't want to stop reading. I enjoyed the journey between Ava and Xander, even the twists and turns the author threw at them. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and definitely recommend this to everyone.

I received Spark as an ARC. Loved the story line, the characters kept you on your toes. Not sure if because it was an ARC, but there were some parts missing and I was confused sometimes when it bounced between characters. But otherwise could not put the book down, had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next.
