I loved this!! I picked this up on a whim. I really like YA contemporaries but sometimes they can be kinda cheesy and shallow... Well, this one wasn’t. And I loved that!
To begin with, the characters were everything! They were amazing. Soo well done and definitely the highlight of this book. They were just soo relatable!!! Like, they are flawed human beings with struggles. But they strive to be better people. They were real and quirky and complex and had so much character. You know? Like they have such distinct personality and quirks. I loved it!
Mina was amazing. I loved her character so much. She’s so nerdy, awkward, funny, kind, fun, and relatable. I related to her on such a personal level, so much so that at times I felt like we were basically the same person. Some of it was just little things and some of it was bigger stuff but either way... It is such a good feeling when you can relate to a character like that, understand them and feel understood at the same time. She’s now definitely one of my favorite characters I’ve read this year.
Cohen was also pretty great too. *wink* I mean, I had mixed feelings about him at times but he totally won me over by the ending. Like totally.
I also really liked Lydia... and I hear she’s getting a story so I’m totally excited for that!!! *happy dance*
I really loved how mature these two were. Sure, they have their immature moments but they realize it. I also love how they deal with mean/ difficult people. Especially Mina. She gives the “mean girl” the benefit of the doubt. She doesn’t just blow Victoria off as a mean person; she tries to understand her and if she can’t do that, she tries to treat her right.
I also loved how Mina consciously thinks about why she is doing things. For instance, making improvements on herself. She does it for herself, not for a guy. I’m really glad that there was distinction there.
This book was just fun to read. It made me laugh, smile, and make giddy noises... but it also made me feel deeper things.
The deeper messages/themes in this book— recognizing your worth, self-growth, forgiveness, relationships, family... I loved that. I also really liked how Mina says she finds her strength in God. The faith elements were very subtle but as this isn’t Christian fiction (that I know of), I wasn’t really expecting it. But I did love the times it was in there!
I love Cohen and Mina together. Their respect for each other (especially Cohen’s respect for Mina) was wonderful. They were so cute, and they really were perfect for each other. I shipped them so hard! I also liked how not-superficial their relationship was. And I love how it was slow-burn too. They started out as friends then best friends then more. And the whole tutor, next door neighbor, and kinda-forced-to-be -together thing? *sigh* I just loved it.
As far as content, it’s clean. Buttt I would recommend it for older teens. Personally I think it’s more for juniors and seniors in high school, or new adults. Partly because they’ll just relate more. Also because there’s some suggestive comments, underage drinking (not the MCs and not made out to be cool), and pretty passionate kisses that happen (although it doesn’t go beyond that so huge thumbs up for that)
But the kissing was a little too detailed for my taste but I’m grateful it didn’t go beyond that.
So in conclusion, I really enjoyed this book! It was fun and deep all at the same time. I loved it!!
