About the author

Marilize Roos

Marilize is an author of historical romance set in Cape Town, South Africa, but writes short stories inbetween for fun.

She used to comb the libraries and second-hand book sales for out-of-print copies of Afrikaans historical romance novels by authors such as Wille Martin and Ena Murray. She has always had a fascination for Cape Town history and Regency Romance, and thought to introduce the rest of the world to Regency-era Cape Town.

She's tried her hand at many different occupations, including working at a riding school as riding instructor, trail guide, stable manager, saddler, and horse handler on TV shows. She's worked as freelance typist, photographic assistant, maintenance contractor's assistant, Public Relations Consultant, and Administrative Assistant. These days she is a proud member of ROSA (Romance Writers' Organization of South Africa).

She lives with her husband and son in Muizenberg, Cape Town, and is currently hard at work on her next novel.

DNFed Before 10%

I had previously read another book by this author, Kevin, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would, given that it was about an FFM romance, which I don't typically read. But I thought the author handled the delicate subject matter very well, so I was curious to see what her next book would be like. Unfortunately, I had issues with the “hero” and heroine (her own deficiencies and the way she was treated) that I just could not get past. At the beginning of the story, the hero comes off as a blackguard as he faces off in a duel with his brother… because he bedded his brother's wife not soon after his marriage. Not exactly swoon-worthy hero material. Then the heroine was facing ill-treatment by her husband after her affair was discovered (and yes, the husband killed the lover in a duel!—what is the author’s deal with duels??). Then, inexplicably, we find her some years later incarcerated and the victim of rape. Some people might like these kinds of stories, but I read for escape, and I do not want to read about such violence, cheating, and idiocy. DNFed before 10%.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Compelling and intense with a hit of dark.
I can really say I do not know about these characters I did not think much of Robert at first but he does get better. Now there is also Flex and Astor Robert and Flex are brothers that fought a duel over Flex’s wife and Astor sister. Robert had a thing with her right after she married Flex. Now six years later these three are back into each other lives plus you have the added in confessed killer Alethea Lady Warrendon. There is a lot going on in just the first few chapters and not a bit of it pleasant for any of the characters involved. Truth all the whole piece is like this the twists-turns are non-stopped. This is a very intense story it is not fun and full of mirth but it is very good. There are sad parts that will touch you in profound ways and a few parts that will make you smile. Marillize Roos is a new author for me but I think she is very gifted. I am glad I picked up this arc and I hope you check it out. I did receive a free copy of this story and voluntarily chose to review it.

Baxter has always protected women and felt compelled to look out for those most vulnerable. Saving the prisoner, Alethea, along with transporting the taxes may have been his worst decisions yet.
Alethea confessed to the killing of her deranged husband only to suffer more at the hands of the prison guards. Now she finds herself in the care of Robert Baxter as he promises to hand her over for a fair judgement.
Is there such a thing when a woman confesses?
I think not.
Until her fate unfolds Alethea and Baxter face many challenges together that test both their spirits and their fortitude. The target on Alethea's back only makes matters worse and forces Baxter to revisit some haunting memories. This is a one of a kind historical novel with intense adversity and a strength in characters. I have read all of the Lords of Good Hope and enjoy the storyline.
