When Earth was almost gone, the alien races arrived to auction off what was left. Now, a band of escaped humans in a stolen alien ship struggle to survive in an unfriendly galaxy. The stars are within reach, but there are no safe harbors.
Jordan Estrada is perpetually frustrated that his great-grandparents did not board an intergenerational starship headed for Proxima Centauri. He believes that science fiction is critical to keeping the slow-burning dream of space exploration alive, and is here to do his part.
Jordan spends most of his free time outdoors, exploring the only planet he currently has access to: Planet Earth.
Ashraf and his friends are a part of a group of survivors from an alien attack on planet Earth.
Living on an alien space craft with a small crew (most of the survivors are in hibernation), they struggle with finding food.
Most of the survivors were once kidnapped by the Gills, an alien race, and experimented on in several ways. The Gills fed them sap, intravenously, so the ship has plenty of that.
But Ashraf and the others want food, so they form a hunting party to look for meat, when they come across an Earth type of world. Of course, something unexpected happens.
Since this is the beginning of a series, it starts a bit slow, but it hints at a bigger picture by giving us a little background information On Ashraf and the former victims of the alien war.
This short story feels like the first portion of a book. While it stands alone as an interlude, with interesting characters, does some nice world building/establishment, it left me wanting to turn the page and read the rest of the book/story.
I've picked up the remaining available stories in the series (6 in total) here's hoping they come together to make a solid story.
I did really like this concept that you could survive an Alien invasion, rebel against your oppressors, and steal one of their ships... And yet get nervous about a job interview after all that, because "It’s the little things that bring you down."
An excellent book for anyone interested in alien life forms. The survivors of a mutiny are starving aboard an enemy ship, finding a planet full of life seems too good to be true and it definitely is too good when an alien lifeforms appears.
I think the big flaw is that the story ended, truly. Can't wait to see more shorts about The Human Ship! Tight narrative tells a huge story in just a few short pages, leaves you wanting more.
Far too short for my level of interest in this story. The characters were likeable and the writing held my attention. I want to find out what happened before this story as well as what will happen next. A recommend read.
This was a good sci fi short story..but very lacking on details of how the crew have come to this current situation...perhaps the other books have the backstory?...on the destruction of earth...the Origin of the gills ect
