A daring armed robbery, a critical boss, and a stolen heirloom. Can DCI Suzanna McLeod juggle it all and get results? Scotland’s best crime-fighting female detective is under pressure to catch armed raiders before they strike again, dealing with conflicts within her team, and being led by her intuition right to the unexpected end.
McLeod’s Edinburgh-based team has a reputation to live up to. A reputation earned by the team’s dedication and determination, and their leader’s talent and inspiration. Suzanna is extremely intelligent, well educated, a gifted analyst, highly intuitive, and fighting fit. But the Chief Superintendent is a frustrating and demotivating, by-the-book meddler. Under pressure to catch armed robbers before they strike again, Suzanna’s focus is challenged when her cherished magnifying glass is stolen. Inheriting the glass from her great-great-uncle – a Victorian-era consulting detective – led to her joining the police and becoming a detective. She owes it to her family to recover the glass. The young crook could never have known the impact its theft would have on him and his family. With her team on the trail of the other gunmen, Suzanna single-handedly takes down the gang’s dangerous leader. But even as the case is drawing to a close, something is nagging at Suzanna. What had they missed?

Enjoyed my reading Harry's first novel immensely. It was a cracking good read and a proper page-turner right through to the last written word. The plot is clever, not unnecessarily complicated and the pace of action is consistently high rather than sporadically frenetic and then quiet in places.
I've already become very fond of DCI McLeod's style of policing and lifestyle choices and look forward to reading more stories about her exploits. Moreover, I look forward to learning more about the history of the beautiful city of Edinburgh; which was an inspired choice by Harry to use as the setting.
Finally, for his first attempt at this type of writing, Harry's debut effort was well worth the wait. Well done Harry and good luck with writing your next offering in the series.
I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this book and it was a great read, I really liked the characters and the story and I hope it becomes a series as I would love to find out more about the characters. Will definitely be recommending this to friends.
This was a good story, but there were problems with the dialogue. It was overly formal for nearly everyone, including teenage boys, and criminals. It sounded more like an English teacher than anything else. Story was great, I love the characters, and it was well paced and didn’t leave a lot of loose threads. But the dialogue needs some work. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books to see how it improves.
This was definitely different. Excellent 1st novel. As I was housebound at the time of reading this it made me forget about daily living and I got really immersed in this novel. Believable characters and no punches spared as to the characters.
A new detective to follow in the future (oh and author).
I came across Harry Navinski at a book reading. Brought the book and it’s be in my TBR pile for a while, what a mistake. This was a great read.
I felt invested in the characters straight away DCI Suzanna McLeod is an inspiring lead investigator. She was a believable and I loved the way Harry brought the team in around her and they solved the case as a team.
I enjoyed this book, I was intrigued as it was based in Edinburgh and found that, because it named places I was familiar with, I could really see the story in my mind. The plot was good and did keep me guessing, I liked the characters and look forward to reading more about them in the next book(s).
Thoroughly enjoyed my first read of a Harry Havinski novel. It was an easy read and I loved the strong characters and the way he weaved the plot together. DCI Suzanna McLeod was very believable and I look forward to the next instalment.
