A thief running from his mistakes. A woman racing toward her destiny. Together they have one chance to save her crew.
Zoe is astronavigator on the Earth ship Endurance; their mission: to submit Earth's application to the Intergalactic Council, make the trade of human slaves illegal and in so-doing save the Sol system from malevolent alien forces. But when the ship is boarded by slavers and her crew taken, Zoe finds herself the possession of a male who claims her as his own. Can she ever allow herself to find happiness with him?
When Daris takes a job, 'no questions asked' he doesn't expect to find himself on The Crucible slave ship. He also doesn’t expect to find his mate. When his actions place her in danger, he has to use every trick at his disposal to get both of them to safety. Only then can he bring news of her ships fate to Earth's allies and in so-doing, gain the trust of the only female he could ever want.
But can they escape the enraged Fedhith slaver and save the crew of Endurance?
TRIGGER WARNING: This book explores themes of domination. There is a brief and non-gratuitous assault attempt near to the end of the book. The heroine lives in a world where human females are considered a sexual commodity. Please do not read this book if these things are a trigger for you.
Lucy is an all-round nerd with a life-long love of fantasy and science-fiction, throw in a happily-ever-after and she’s a happy customer. When she’s not reading or writing about alien males and the human women who love them, she’s spending time with her husband and three cats in their Derbyshire home.
OMG! Everyone in this VROKKIN’ universe is TSTL! None of their “plans” made sense, after they escaped the slaver’s ship it should have been over, but no, let’s involve them in more shit a trained professional should have done, in a place that is extremely dangerous not only to the human, but to her alien mate as well. And, since that apparently wasn’t enough, let’s get them into more stupid shit, untrained, without backup, and risk not only them, but everyone in the fucking city. And all for naught, since they didn't even recover the people who were sold (even five years later in the epilogue things are the same). Seriously, I can’t understand why anybody would pay the Tessans for protection, since they can’t seem to be able to protect anyone. They’re supposed to be over three hundred years old, trained warriors, but can’t be bothered to show up on time to spring the trap they set up? they should have been there BEFORE the fight, they should have had an attack team ready to storm the slave ship the moment it landed, but no, they weren’t there! The pit fighters had to do it, and obviously, they fucked everything because they had no idea what they were doing. And they knew they were giving their freedom away by helping, but they did it anyway? not one protested or tried to convince them not to. Yeah, right. And why didn’t they tell Edan? He’s the owner of the place (Which they got destroyed with their actions), and, they claim, a friend (I don’t want friends like these people), but they involved him and his people in something dangerous without telling him? Common sense, a basic courtesy, so he was at least prepared for this. This plot just made me angry, none of it made sense. Also, more and more alien races are introduced, some of these characters are on page for one paragraph and then gone, what’s the point? Also, some of these races are so similar to each other that it’s difficult to identify them. For example, Tolomus and Daris are pretty much the same, They’re both purple, they both have fangs and claws, and it was difficult to differentiate them sometimes. And don’t get me started with the mental health rep! Just by being a sub she’s cured. Twenty-something years of abuse and gaslighting? Gone, she just needed to submit to her Dom, nothing more. Trauma? What's that? Nothing, now she’s got some orgasms. All her insecurity and shyness were gone because she submitted. I get it, that type of surrender could be liberating, but all her issues are gone in a freaking week! Traumatic events that she thinks would warrant Therapy disappear because now she has a Dom. That bothered me. And she has the gall to pity other characters for not overcoming the abuse! Gah! Finally, the many, many punctuation and grammar mistakes, along with the myriad of extra or missing words constantly took me out of the story, trying to figure out what the meaning of the phrases was.
This series started well, but it seems it's going really downhill. The issues I had with the first book remain - too many characters, too much extraneous information. Also, I get the concept of series, but this author made the mistake of adding too many new characters so the next books are not that interesting since they deal with people who had too little impact on the original book. Now, to get to this specific book and the reason I DNFd at chapter 7. The heroine is a human, but the MMC is someone who interacted with the original group for less than one page in the first book. The only "quality" that was mentioned is that he's incapable of having sex until he meets his mate. So, the heroine is on the human ship going to the IGC and of course they are betrayed and boarded by slavers. By the way, the same slaver that's been doing that in the previous book. The "hero" offers to "train" her for the slaver, because why the heck not? And since she's a doormat, she accepts and trusts his inexistent rescue plan because hormones... I DNFd once all the humans on the ship were sold to different buyers while the hero and heroine are watching. Why? Beats me - it's not like they are able to identify who buys them, they can only see the species of the buyers. It's so freaking ridiculous that I just gave up. I don't give a damn what happens next. I am so sorry this series went off the rails so fast, it had great potential.
Another great book in this series. And the purple man-chest on the cover is amazing. The world building is still fantastic - the effort to overturn legalized slavery is complicated and fraught with setbacks but they are moving forward.
I got pretty stressed out about how long they were on the slave ship. I don't know that the author should have done anything different but the amount of danger they are in and how outnumbered they are and the consequences if they fail to get away, are brutal. It may be just that the author is really good at conveying the intensity of the situation but it was almost more tense than I want my sci-fi romances to be.
However, with that said, the main characters have a lot of tension building between them which may have added to the overall tension in a lot of the scenes. This is really well done by the author. She explains how the dynamic in their relationship works in a really great way. There are a couple pages at about 50 percent in the book when the main characters have a conversation about power and control. This is a small bit of it,
“‘You don’t need to trust someone enough to give up control?’ …. ‘You don’t need to let go and allow yourself to take?’”
Their interactions are a great example of how control, and trust, and surrender, and power can all work together in a really healthy way.
Exciting reading! Zoe and Daris are the leads in this story. Daris is quite an interesting guy. He has a dominant personality, although he is not heavy-handed with it. I love that he knows right away who is meant for him. He does the very best he can to keep her safe and get her out of the horrifying situation in which she finds herself. Zoe is conflicted and doesn’t do well standing up for herself. Daris, however, seems to bring out the best in her. She is a much stronger and more centered person than she was at the onset. The tension is thick enough to cut throughout most of the book. One thrill after another as the book races toward its end. The epilogue delivers a very satisfying ending, though some of Zoe’s friends have yet to be rescued. I’ve met quite a few interesting characters in the course of the book and am wondering if there will be stories in their future. I hope so!
I was lucky enough to receive an early copy of this book, nevertheless the following review is my honest opinion. So far The Thief's Dark has been my favorite in the whole series and I encourage everybody to give it a try. Lucy created an exciting new world in the Renegades with hot alien's and strong females. About the book; >Zoe is a astronavigator on an earth ship, the crew has an important mission, save the human race from slavery. They get boarded by slavers and everybody on the ship is in danger to be sold off. That's how Zoe meets Daris. Daris sees Zoe as his mate and does everything in his power to protect her.<
All in all it was an exciting read with many new characters, I cannot wait to see what comes next in the Renegades universe.
Still fanning myself over this one 👀 I now have a new book boyfriend. This for me was off the charts hot hot HOT. The books first of all, should be read in order because the author gives a very extensive description of the universe, it’s different races/species and conflicts and you’ll be completely lost if you start here. That being said, once you start reading, you’ll be transported into quite an adventure but be prepared for situations that will make you uncomfortable; these are hard times for little humans after all. If you like alien abductions, hot alphas and perilous adventures then you’ll certainly enjoy this ❤️
I loved this book! Both Daris and Zoe were easy to like. Daris was an orphan and Zoe had a horrible childhood, which gave them some common ground. I love how Daris doesn’t ever try to change her, just supports her decisions and boosts her self confidence. Also Zoe never downplayed their connection.
The story is action packed which pulls you in and keeps you wanting more. I can’t wait for this series to continue!
I received a free copy and am voluntarily leaving my review.
I love this series so much. The universe has just completely captivated me. I fall in love with all the characters and want a thousand spin offs with side characters everytime.
I found myself very emotionally invested in Zoe throughout the book. She is a lovely character that I found very relatable. She and Daris also have a super hot D&S relationship going on that was positively toe curling.
I loved the world-building especially the pit fighters and their gladiatorial life before freedom. Our thief in this book, Daris, has always been sweet and fun loving in his previous interactions with Makios and his other friends. But his mate Zoe made his personality shine with his darker instincts. I’m looking forward to the next book and finding out what happened to the crew of the Endurance.
It’s a good story with great characters. The leads are Daris and Zoe. The first thing that happened was the ship that Zoe was on was captured. It seemed like they were betrayed. Zoe tried to escape but was discovered by Daris. Who immediately recognized her as his mate. It’s a slow burn romance. Zoe did irritate me for a fair amount of the story.
This is a superb new addition to the Renegades series from L. P. Peace. I loved it! This story is extra steamy and full of super sexy aliens.. Fabulously written characters and scenes! Exciting, dangerous and unpredictably addictive...
This series continues to get better and better 😃. So many different characters, so many difficult situations and intense decisions 🤔. Thanks again L.P., this series is well worth reading and I'm really enjoying it 🤓.
Zoe Winters is a military woman who along with her shipmates from the Endurance is captured and caged. Daris, through lack of foresight, is a guard in the slave ship. An interesting romance but a bit much with his innate need to dominate.
