I am lucky enough to have friends involved with Terror Nova and I love reading their work, but in an effort to not be biased, I am going to give the review as if I didn’t know them.

Terror Nova is a collection of spooky short stories that are tied together with a spooky haunted bus tour magically taking patrons from St. John’s to GFW. I thought the idea of the bus tour and tying everything together was really fun and unique. My only complaint about this section was I wish there was a bit more meat in the tie in story itself. I found it a little repetitive and more of a build up that needed a bit more something to pull me in to care about the characters on the bus. But I did enjoy the game and loved imagining the bus and the people on it.

Most of the short stories in this book are very fun and take a spin on Newfoundland traditions, folklore, or culture and make them spooky. I love this, especially as someone who was born and raised in NL. There was some I liked way more than others, but for the most part I think they all fit within the vibe of Terror Nova.

My two top picks have to be Foreshadows by Kelley Power, the Lovecraft-ian interview style take on stories from Bell Island (because it do be spooky), and As Much As You’d Like, My Angel by Erin Mick which tells the story of a consuming stay at a B&B. There were only a couple I really didn’t vibe with, with most pulling me in. Honourable mention is the first story, Ends with Benefits by Chris Lewis Carter, mostly because it made me urge and want to vomit while still being extremely clever.

In all, it was a great read and perfect for the Fall!

I bought this book several months ago at the Farmer’s Market and it has lived on my shelf since I purchased it. I decided last week that I would start it, and was barely able to put it down! I guess being from Newfoundland, I recognized all the towns the stories are based in which made it even spookier. I devoured this book story by story and loved how it was told with a connecting storyline throughout which all came together at the end. The stories all reminded me of the eerie tales I heard growing up in Newfoundland about the Bell Island mines, the old hag, Peter Easton and his cursed treasure, etc.

Awesome book and a great piece of NL fiction…
Or is it? ;)
