The Cowboy's Christmas Plan

Rate this book
Sometimes the most unexpected circumstances lead to the best adventures...

Cadence Greer’s plans for a happy-ever-after are quickly derailed when her fiancé runs off with his secretary a week before their wedding. Homeless, jobless, and jilted, she escapes to Grass Valley, Oregon, where she takes a job as a housekeeper and cook to seven cowboys on a sprawling ranch.

Trey Thompson is a well-respected pillar of the community, running a successful ranch with his brother. All he wanted was someone to cook meals and keep the house clean. When he hires Cadence Greer for the job, he gets more than he ever planned on, including a sassy little redheaded orphan.

Spend Christmas in Grass Valley at the Triple T Ranch, where mistletoe hangs in abundance and holiday magic floats in the air.

I went ahead and gave this book 3 stars because I really enjoyed the story, but... it was more sensual than I prefer, especially for Christian fiction. Simply put, I liked the book, but there were several scenes that I really could have done without.

As usual, I loved it! You just can't go wrong with a Shanna Hatfield romance! It doesn't seem to matter what time period she writes in, they're ALL outstanding!!
I was thrilled with the addition of Cass in this story!

I completely enjoyed the audio version of this book!

Charming Cowboy Romance

This was a really cute book. I loved the ranch setting with the cowboys and especially loved Trey and Cady, our main characters. Oh and don’t get me started on the delicious food that Cady was always making for the cowboys!! I love to bake and cook and it had me itching to go create something in the kitchen. I also quickly fell in love with the cute little girl, Cass. That sure added a surprise and twist to this romance! A wonderful book and I hope to read more about each Thompson brother in the other books!

Nice sweet romantic read.

I settled down to read this book, I'd noticed that the synopsis seemed familiar but I didn't really think anything of it until I started reading and then I realised I'd read this book before, years ago, back before I started reviewing. After getting over my initial disappointment I decided to re-read it anyway.
This is a gentle, slow building, clean cowboy romance, Cadence Greer gets an unwelcome surprise when her fiancé Bill sends out an email informing the attorneys at work he's calling off his engagement to her and eloping with his secretary as you can imagine this puts Cadence in an untenable position and she sees no other option than leaving the company. Since she's already given notice on her apartment and sold most of her furniture she takes off for pastures new, her Aunt Viv and Uncle Joe live in Grass Valley, Oregon and after discovering that's she's probably the worst waitress in the world Cadence finds a job as Cook and housekeeper at the Triple T Ranch working for Trey and Trent Thompson.
The attraction between Cadence and Trey is instant although they skirt around it for a while they can only fight it so long, into the mix is added cute little Cass, an adorable five year old who likes missytoes kisses.
As I said this is a nice sweet read, there's no surprises or shocks just a nice gentle read.

Second Time Reading This Wonderful Book!

I just love this book and the whole series that follows. In preparation for the next one coming out February 2016. I wanted to read the entire series again and I loved and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Maybe a little more since I took my time. Well written, with wonderful and loveable characters. Truly a wonderful, fun, clean, feel good romance, to read anytime of the year. First time read on my Nook, now have it on my kindle too. JudyE

This book is absolutely wonderful and I really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this to my christian friends. It is one of the sweetest romance stories I have read in a long time. Cadence Greer thinks she has everything she wants until her boyfriend runs away with his secretary a week before their wedding. He sends an e mail to all the partners in the law firm where they work saying he will be gone two weeks for his honeymoon. Cady knows she can not stay there. She has already broken up her household in her marriage planning. She flees to Grass Valley, Oregon where she stays with her aunt Viv for a while. She tries working at her diner but she isn't a very good waitress. In walks Trey and Travis Thompson. Two very handsome and single ranchers. Cady goes to wait on them and she spills water all over Trey and falls at his feet. He laughs. Her aunt says she needs a job before she destroys her diner. Trey hires her for their housekeeper and cook. She is a great housekeeper and an excellent cook. The ranch hands love her food and so do Trey and Travis. She starts to have an attraction to Trey but fights against it because he is her employer. This story held my interest I read it all in one day, I couldn't put it down. Also to complicate things in walks this little five year old who steals all their hearts because she has a tough life. If you love cowboys and romance read this you won't be sorry

DNF at 171 pages (47%) on 10/19/2020.

The writing isn't amazing in this one. It's kind of clunky and has that step-by-step way of describing things that are happening. The romance has zero tension and since it's a Christian romance (which I didn't realize), it has a way of turning any sexy times into hints about how premarital sex is wrong. I might have liked it 8 years ago and I wanted to give it a chance because I like holiday romances, but meh. There's better out there these days and I decided not to waste any more time on this one. Oh well.

Also unhauling the book.

A sweet little story. A tad long in my opinion. I enjoyed the purity of the romance and the characters. Even though at times I struggled to finish the book, I'm glad I did and enjoyed the ending.

This is a story about true love and how it's possible to fall in love (love at first sight) in a short amount of time and it be real. I believe in true love. In the story Trey (which is NOT his birth name, I didn't like this) gave the heroine a nickname and I was not in favor of it. Cadence became "Cady"....just didn't sit well with me.

I don't see continuing the series.

Rating: PG -some kisses, but NOTHING even remotely like what I've read in the past
Language: NOT ONE SINGLE CURSE/CUSS/PROFANITY word, usage or thought! It WAS great!
Recommend: Yes

Just can't do it. I'm DNFing this one at 50% just out of pure sugar overload. It's sweet, escapist, but so far from reality that I just couldn't keep going. I'm really disappointed because this had the makings of a great Christian romance. But I think it suffers from what I don't like in this sub-sub-genre, which is a rather rose-tinted view of the world at large. Nothing is ever that perfect, especially for Christians.

To be fair, I might have continued if the narrator (Chris Abell) had been better. He's a good reader but not a voice actor, and some of his phrasings were off. Good try - A for effort, but didn't do it for me.

I’ve yet to find a book that Shanna Hatfield has written, that didn’t pull me in and wrap its storyline around my heart.
What could be better?
Well, the first book of a series you know will continue to fulfill your love of reading with each additional book.
The Cowboy’s Christmas Plan was as wonderful as I expected it to be, I’ve been wanting to start this series for over a year, my heart soars with satisfaction.
I’m so glad it’s a long series because I’m addicted to this wonderful ranching family.
Trey and Cadence swept me away.
Ms. Cass stole my heart.
Thank you Shanna for always delivering such phenomenal books that just warm our hearts.

A Clean Christmas Story..

If you are looking for something that is heartwarming and clean, this is a Good Choice.

The family is sweet and the characters are well developed.

This is the first book in a five book series and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Chris Abell did really well with the narration.

I liked the story but I am another reader who is uncomfortable with the sensuality in a story that is classified as a Christian book. I do appreciate that the language was clean and kindness prevailed throughout the story.

Fun Cowboy Romance

I think there was a little too much going on in this book, but it worked out well! It was very long, but I loved having so much detail! I can't wait to read the next ones!

It was a good plot, but there were a lot of added details that did nothing to enhance the book, rather made it drag on.

This is a feel good Christmas story that also deals with some difficult things like parental neglect. The story is on the predictable side but there were a few surprises.

I liked the characters and the caring attitude for others. I would enjoy knowing the stories for the other brothers.

There were two things that bugged me in the book. First, every time Trey used the endearment Darlin'. I always think of Darlin' as opposed to darling as a southern thing. I may be wrong but I grew up in Oregon, albeit in western Oregon and not central. I just don't associate the use of darlin' with an Oregonian. And second, is my own weird thing but one of the quotes at the beginning of a chapter was by someone that I just can't bear. At all. I mean I have zero respect for this person. So while the quotes were good and fitting for each chapter when I got to that quote, I almost didn't want to finish the book. Silly I know but it was like I lost all respect for it. I had to suck it up and remind myself that one quote doesn't make the book awful. And then I enjoyed the rest of it.

I thought the author handled the situation of having an neglectful, alcoholic parent well. It was heartbreaking though. Poor little Cass was so matter of fact about the difficulties she endured. And how she ended up being such a sweet, well adjusted kid is a miracle.

Potential triggers: Alcoholic parent, parental neglect

Left at the altar

Cadance is left at th e alter just before she's supposed to marry Bill. He decided to run away and elope with his secretary. Cadance quits her job and goes to stay with her aunt in Grass Valley, a small town in Oregon. She tries working as a waitress at her aunt's restaurant, only she's very bad at her job. Trey and his brother Trent stop by for a meal and Cadance spills Trey's drink all over him. That's some first impression. Him and his brother are looking for a cook and housekeeper and when they have a slice of her apple pie they know they have to hire her. Trey never expected to fall in love and Cady, as he called her, was not looking for love. It just happened but neither realized they were in love. Candy was at the restaurant one day when a little girl, Cass, came running over asking for scraps. Viv told Cady that she gave Cass the leftovers everyday so she would have something to eat. Her mother was not a good mother. Then there came a day when her mother died and Cady decided to take Cass home with her. Would Trey accept the little girl? Would they be able to keep her? Would Cady and Trey get married?
Read the book, you'll enjoy this wonderful story.

What a heartwarming, sometimes close to heartbreaking little story about love and trust and faith.
Cadence (what a name!), left by her fiance a couple of days before her wedding, seeks solace with her aunt Viv, who owns a diner in Cowboy country. With only few options left, the city girl accepts the offer of being Cook and Housekeeper to the Thompson brothers.
The characters are so real, I think everyone of us readers knows someone who could have been that specific person in this book. A Christian romance, yes - but Faith and Trust in God is not used to beat the reader over the head in missionary purpose, but is such an ingrained part of everyday life, of the characters in this book, as natural as breathing, and it comes over as such, just naturally. I felt so sorry for Cass, and for her mother, and again, characters like that exist everywhere.
If at times, the story may have been a little too sweet, it was told in such a way that I as the reader was too engrossed in what was going on, too keen on finding out what happened next, I definitely did not notice it whilst reading, and I could not stop until I had reached the last page.
Do I want to read more in the Grass Valley Series? You bet! And any other series this author wrote or will still write.

Wow, I am so glad I finally got to read this story. Ms. Hatfield writes the most amazing stories historical or contemporary that I just have to read them. Her stories are so amazing and so funny to read and so full sarcasm and so much more.
This story was all this and so much more.
The Thomson brothers are awesome and so hunky and Candace our heroine who is the girl I would want to have been. She is smart, funny, witty, and full of fun even if Trey the oldest Thomson brother things her stays are too tight. This is a contemporary and that idea is so funny to me.
She becomes their cook and housekeeper and all the hands as well as the brothers are in love with her as her cooking is so amazing that no one will miss a meal.
I just loved all the characters and I love this story and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. This in one I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down. Oh, and one of these hunky cowboys just can’t live without her.
This is a story about friendship, good relationships between employer and employee and parentless children. It is so very good. I highly recommend this story. You will love it.

3.5 stars haha. “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” -Tia Princess and the Frog. That quote pretty much sums up this book haha. The book was very long when I don’t think it needed to be. I feel like things were repeated when the perspective was changed constantly. It was kind of confusing at first bc of it changing so often but I got used to it. There was also lots of cheesy scenes/lines haha. That being said, I still enjoyed reading it and I was never bored! The three cowboy brothers were cute together and I like when the ranch hands came over. I liked the ranch setting and small town. City girl coming to the farm trope is always fun! It was over all a feel good book with cute scenes with cowboys!
SPOILERS. Notes while reading:
That was the sweetest/romantic cowboy kiss: Riding horses in the falling snow then leaning over to kiss. Hehe you know how I feel about the pet name darlin too. Kids are so resilient. The kid was so well behaved though haha. A sweet little angel haha.

Wowza!!

This book left me breathless! A bit steamier than any others from this author, but nothing too naughty!

I loved this story of Cady and Trey!! Their story was so sweet and tender, even though there were a few times that Trey was a bit of a dunderhead lol. When he introduced Cady to Travis as his housekeeper and cook...sheesh! I don't think I could have forgiven him as quick as she did! Their romance was wonderful and I truly appreciated that there was no conflict or lack of communication. That in itself made this book wonderful to me. All that usual conflict gets really old after awhile. My favorite scene, besides the proposal was the horseback ride during the first snowfall. ....sigh.....
The added storyline of Cass was so very touching! I absolutely loved it. So many little ones get lost in the system or placed with horrible people. She was a cutie patootie!

I cannot wait to read the next in the series! ❤️❤️❤️

The low rating is not exactly/entirely the story's fault. It's cheesy af and has way too many words and is not well-paced but is still mostly tolerable if skimmed. I full-stopped at 71%, Chapter 16, the quote prefacing the chapter. What an absolute mood-killer. I refuse to read anymore. Sure this was published in 2011, but a lot has happened in 7 years. Now I see that name and it induces a unparalleled rage in me. A mediocre fluffy cowboy christmas romance novel is among the last places I ever expected to see that name or anything that has ever come out of his stupid racist clown-mouth, so get the frack out of here with that bullshit and for the record, all Shanna Hatfield books are going on my black-list now. Maybe that's an overreaction. I don't know. I don't care. I'm so disgusted.

Make sure your blood sugar is stable

This is a really sweet, Christmas fairytale, full of glurge, kind of story. If you read it when you're in the mood for a Pollyanna-type romance, I promise you'll enjoy it. Avoid it when your inner cynic is ascendent, however as the protagonists & their family are just so perfect, it will shift the cynicism into overdrive.

Happily, I was in the mood for this and so I found it entertaining. Sadly, I've had to wrestle my inner cynic to get this review out, and I think the cynic might be winning, lol.

Clean romance level: passionate kissing, as well as an after the wedding scene with the newlyweds that push the boundaries toward stirring the reader's sense of lust a little bit more than they really should, though technically doesn't actually cross the line.

The oldest Thompson cowboy finds love with the house keeper.

Enjoyed being back in Grass Valley again. Trey and Cadence story was sweet. It was love at first sight for Trey. Cadence had just come from a bad break up. She wasn't looking for love and Trey wasn't either. But he and Trent needed a housekeeper and a cook. As Cadence was in his home cooking for him their love grew. When little Cass stole their hearts they knew they needed to do something. They had a great support system. Trent, Travis, and the ranch hands fell in love with Cass and Cadence. Denni got the daughter she needed. Cass got the family she loved. I already read Trent and Lindsey story and also Brice and Bailey. Looking forward to Travis and Tess story along with Denni and Hart story and Ben and Harper. Hope to be back soon.

I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. The characters were totally compatible and easy to identify with.
Cadence leaves her long term Law Firm job when jilted by her fiancée. She goes to stay with her Aunt in Oregon and fails as a waitress. Along comes 2 brothers who run a Cowboy ranch.. oldest brother Trey has immediate connection to Cady (Cadence) and she feels it to...but they both wonder if the other one feels the same. She of-course agrees to be the Ranch's cook & housekeeper.

Throw in a 4 year Cass whose mother is a depressed alcoholic and ends up dying. The child's dad died several years prior.. Cady & Trey to the rescue.
A fun, flirty to the end, story of trust, friendship, romance & love. Some detective work involving the "mean aunt" who wants Cass for the monthly income.
It was a little "cheesy", but really a good read! :)

When Cadence Greer's life upends in heartbreak, she decides her life needs a change. She leaves her job at the law firm and moves by her Aunt Viv. While working as a waitress for her Aunt's restaurant she meets Trey and Trent Thompson a set of brothers who run a local ranch. The men are looking for a housekeeper and cook. When Cadence takes the job on the ranch she realizes there was more to life than she thought. She enjoyed cooking for the ranch hands and the Thompson brothers. Cadence Greer a jilted bride leaves her job at a high powered attorneys office in Portland Oregon to go nurse her wounds in the rural town of Grass Valley Oregon. Little does Cadence know being left jobless, homeless and without a groom would lead her to the two greatest loves of her life. One hunky Cowboy Trey Thompson and one sweet little 5yr old curly red headed orphan Cass. The story that unfolds between the pages of The Cowboy’s Christmas Plan is one that will leave the reader believing in miracles and Happy Ever Afters. This is definitely one you don’t want to miss. I highly highly recommend The Cowboy’s Christmas Plan another wonderful book by author extraordinaire Shanna Hatfield
