Witches, especially healers like Colleen Antrim, weren't made to be warriors. Only a select few were born with the aggressive mentality and the offensive magic needed to protect others. This never struck her as a lack, because Colleen was born to heal and nurture.
That was her nature.
Until it wasn't...
When the man she's loved for years is used as a weapon against her, something within her shatters, a fundamental shift that changes the very foundation of who she is.
Forced to use her powerful gifts in ways they were never meant to be used, the very core of who she is shatters.
Magic made her. Then it broke her. Now it haunts her...and she doesn't know if she can find her back.
J.C. Daniels is the alter ego of author Shiloh Walker. J.C./Shiloh has been writing since she was a kid. She fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more...ah...serious works of fiction. She loves reading and writing just about every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest. She writes urban fantasy, romantic suspense and paranormal romance, among other things.
I am legitimately angry about the lack of editing in this book. There’s even an author’s note at the beginning stating that she accidentally formatted for production the incorrect, error-ridden version of this book. This book was published in 2020, and I am reading this from the Hoopla library app in 2022, so why hasn’t this been fixed yet? These aren’t small errors. Some of these sentences barely even make sense! Case in point:
“And Kit…well, she preternaturally fast and had hearing almost as sharp as cat’s.”
That was a direct quote! I’m so glad I didn’t buy this book.
This was a great little story. After three long years since the last Colbana Files book was written (a FAVE series of mine, btw) however, it was really hard remembering all the characters and back-story without more time invested - either by me re-reading previous installments, or the author in making this installment longer so the reader could connect better.
Colleen has been slowly coming to terms with the drastic change in her magic. Justin has been there in the background supporting her but unable to really help. Then one day Kit turns up she has a case and it's a doozy, she's been advised that magical backup will be needed if she's to prevail, so, here Kit is at Colleen's door expecting her and Justin to help. Justin of course says yes straight away but Colleen is not so sure, her magic is still erratic almost as if it has a life of its own, Colleen doesn't trust herself to be the backup Kit needs. But Kit is relying on her so off they all go to face a murderous ghost. Would have been 5 stars but has several typos which interfere with the flow of the story at times. Also contains the short story Forgotten Blade which tells what happened when Kit and Justin went to Tennessee to deal with TJ's old alpha ...........the one responsible for her.being.in a wheelchair..........
This one was short, but there was a lot going on in it. Colleen has been going through a lot, she's a bit wobbly, but with the action in this one she finds her feet and finds a way back to herself. I liked that Kit pushed her to it, but did it in a good way, because the easy job Kit thought things were going to be turned out to be so much more. It took the combination of Kit, Colleen and Justin to get things done and do a bit of good along the way. I loved how Colleen let Justin know she was back to normal after.
I love this series. It was good to read about Kit, Colleen, and Justin again. There were a few typing mistakes, it was hard to follow in a few places. Even so I enjoyed the book and look forward to more in this series.
A short story with Colleen Antrim, Justin and Kit. Colleen is still trying to recover from her kidnapping and the unleashing of her wild magic. Kit has a job that uniquely fits Colleen and her new powers but can Colleen trust herself not to lose control and hurt those she loves.
I love the idea of this short, but the massive editing problems really affected the reading of Colleen's story. The author notes that originally a wrong version had been uploaded but that was back in 2020. These things should have been corrected by now and it made for frustrating reading.
I have to admit of the novellas this vies for first place as have always enjoyed learning more about Colleen.
Now that I have read it my respect for how strong her character has finally become mentally as well as magically has tripled!
Loved the setup and how the main characters each played to their individual strengths and then worked as a unit as well during the final execution of their contracted job.
Great plot. Start the Colbana files first to understand the plight of the main character. She finally pulls herself back together with a little help from her friends, Justin and Kit. A dangerous mission forces her to channel that wild new power.great plot. Great characters plus a short story. Great author too.
It was important to see what transpired when Colleen and Justin were taken. The additional short story explaining how Kit kept her promise to TJ was a great bonus.
A great addition to the Colbana series even though it confused me initially as Kit's aunt had shown up at the end of book 6 and I thought I had missed reading a follow up. Here's hoping that filler will become available. Love this series.
Colleen is one of Kit's closest friends and when she was hurt she thought that she'd been broken. It's up to Kit and Justin to prove to her that her new magic just makes her old magic more powerful than ever.
It's great to get stories from other characters points of view. In this novella it's lots witch best friend collene and how she recovers from being broken when in a previous Kit Colbana book she and Justin were held captive and tortured.
