The Magic Fix

Rate this book
The Known World needs a fix or things could get very ugly
(even uglier than an Ogre!)

“Did we win the battle?” asked King Wyndham.
“Well it depends how you define winning,” answered Longfield, one of the King’s royal commanders.

In fact, the Humans are fighting a losing battle with the Trolls. Meanwhile the Ogres are up to something, which probably isn’t good. Could one flying unicorn bring about peace in the Known World? No, obviously not.
But maybe a group of rebels have the answer. Or maybe the answer lies with a young Pixie with one remarkable gift. Does the Elvish Oracle have the answer? Who knows? And even if she did would anyone understand her cryptic answers (we all know what Oracles are like!)

The Known World is in danger of being rent in twain, and twain-rending is never good!
Did I mention the dragon? No? Ah… well… there’s also a dragon.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via the author.

The Magic Fix is a unique, fun and humorously sarcastic read ideal for any reading slumps. We meet some great fantasy creatures in this book - Ogres, Trolls, Pixies, unicorns, Dragons, Goblins and of course humans. The land (shown on the map on the cover) is divided between these creatures and they're all scheming and plotting - some want world peace and alliance with other creatures and others want to continue fighting. This book is told across multiple POVs and I loved the sarcastic comical narration throughout this book. It had such a funny undertone and I found myself laughing so many times! This is definitely an author I will read more of in the future and hope this book has another to accompany it as it'd make a great series. The advisors and the Kings conversations absolutely cracked me up! If you love fantasy worlds, character driven plots, mythical creatures and fun undertones this is definitely a book you need to read!

The Magic Fix was an unexpected read for me! The highlight of the story is definitely the authors comical and sarcastic writing tone. One would expect that so many magical creatures bundled up together (Ogres, pixies, trolls, goblins, unicorns, dragons...) would in turn lead to a complex read, which is quite the opposite case for The Magic Fix. The author managed to make this vast cast of characters easy to grasp and delightfully entertaining.

The story flows fast paced from the very first chapter and had me completely hooked. The Magic Fix is told in multiple point of views of the different species of the world (Humans, Elves, Ogres..). We discover that there are alliances between some of the 6 kingdoms as well as animosity between others. Majority of the different species want to achieve world peace and end the constant ongoing war between the kingdoms, which is easier said than done.

"Well enlighten me then," he said, looking firmly back at Wilfred. "What's the answer? What's the magic fix to ensure peace across the Known World? What do you think we should do?".

The focus of the story is not on the worldbuilding itself, but instead it is a character driven story. My favorite element was the humorous dialogues, specially between the king and his advisors. I found myself laughing out loud while reading multiple times. The satirical writing style has captivated me and I will definitely keep an eye out for future works by the author!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!

I liked this for the most part and I think there's a bright future ahead for Mark and his future novels. I think the beginning chapters of this book were fantastic and the first few pages had me fully invested in the style and comedy but that unfortunately fell a bit for me as the book went on. The overall storyline that we ended up following wasn't what I expected but the comedic moments carried the book for the most part.

The Magic Fix is a fictional book set in the Known World where its land is divided between various fantasy creatures. You get to meet the Ogres, Goblins, Trolls, Pixies (my favorites) and Humans scheming toward fixing their world before war knock their doors again.

The story is narrated from multiple POVs coming from different characters where each represents a different creatures. I enjoyed the spontaneous inner voice and the silly sarcasm of the characters throughout their whole journey. And some of their dialogues were so good they made me laugh out loud several times. The characters were all utterly enjoyable and entertaining thoroughly. One couldn't but fall in love with their spontaneous responses and mischievous thoughts.
Sending a big hug to Petra and Fulton. They were my absolute favorites!

Montanaro's writing style flows smoothly and is easy to read. Sometimes light-hearted books is really what you need after going through dark and brutal worldbuilding books so this read has just came in the perfect time to devour.

The Magic fix is a short light-hearted book mixed with a great deal of comedy and political scenes which makes it an interesting combination for every fiction reader out there! Highly recommended as your next quick fantasy read!

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book.

This was an entertaining read that was a wonderful break from some of the heavier, darker books I have been reading lately. The story had comedic elements and was told through multiple POVs of different characters throughout the Known World. I enjoyed the story and found myself laughing at the whimsical narration and I am certainly interested in the next installation to see what’s in store for these characters!

This was a really fun read. It has good humor and is an easy read.
I read this book in one day.
The story grips you in and it has all the elements of a fantasy novel.
Magic pixies, ugly ogres, stubborn elves, unlucky goblins, humans and some dragons even ;)
Some heroes, some bad guys and a lot of bad luck for some :P
And the hero is maybe not the personality you would expect ;)
It had some really funny twists in the plot. And you can say that some people are just unlucky on their quest.
I was a bit sad that the story was so short, and hopefully mark you will add more books to this world.
If you are looking for an easy read, especially with good humor, this book will fit you well.
It will give you a good and funny book experience.

I would like to thank the author Mark Montanaro for sending me a copy of his debut novel: THE MAGIC FIX
I'm very thankful and glad you contacted me to review your book.

I loved reading this book from cover to cover, even if some details could have been developed a bit more in my opinion, but I'll come to that later.

The universe in which our story takes place is certainly classic fantasy (ogres, goblins, pixies) but the way the author brings them to life is most singular and enjoyable.

I can't remember the last time I laughed that much while reading a book, and after reading some pretty boring or intense books, it's always a pleasure to have a break and that's exactly what happened here.

THE MAGIC FIX was a real breath of fresh air: humor is omnipresent in the book and the characters are all more or less whimsical but at their own expense.
I won't say more to avoid any spoiler but if you like Terry Pratchett, then maybe this book is for you.
The dialogues are just amazing and I loved the sarcasm throughout the story, I just wish some of the characters had a little more development.
Petra for example would have gained in charisma if her story had been dug a little deeper, otherwise the dynamic between Ridley and Fulton was just perfect.

The context seems to suffer from a lack of development but this does not really spoil the story.
For a debut novel, the author pulled it off pretty well in my opinion.

Thanks again for the fun times and I look forward to reading more about these very colorful characters.

Comedy-filled fantasy, political drama. I laughed out loud multiple times at characters’ inner monologues and sarcasm. It was light-hearted even at the darkest moments. I’ve never read anything like this!

The political scheming was intriguing and I loved seeing different point of views from the humans, ogres, and pixies. You get to see their different views on the world and each other.

I think the lore and world building could have been beefed up a bit. Although the dialogue was excellent among characters and I felt invested by the end.

3.5/5 ⭐️ For fans of The Princess Bride and Monty Python. Easy to read, light-hearted, and dripping with sarcasm. I am rounding this up to four stars because the author simply deserves it! We need more stories like this.

I have never read a fantasy book that was so comical. In a world of Humans, Elves, Pixies, Trolls, Ogres, and Goblins... a world that is on the brink of war... you would expect something complicated and serious. With multiple POVs and only 230 pages, you would think it wouldn't be enough time to develop unique characters. You would be wrong about this book. The Magic Fix is proof that you don't need 800 pages of complex plot and even more complex characters to have a good time in a fantasy world. While the stakes were meant to be high (brewing tensions & oncoming war), it always felt like a whimsical bedtime story.

At times, the dialogue/narration was a silly and slap-stick type humor, and then at times very witty and understated. I found myself really enjoying how this subtly made fun of the fantasy genre while mixing in some real-world humor (like an Oracle that gives vague advice and then asks for a review of your visit).

BUT... can you have too much humor? Even though this is a short book, it took me a few days to read. I was engaged initially, but then became a bit unresponsive to the constant sarcasm, and later in the book, it wasn't making me laugh anymore. The puns/jokes were never the same, but I had to break it up a bit because it was becoming less and less funny the more I read in one sitting. It is my hope that future books strike more of a balance.

Thank you so so much to the author for sharing a copy of this book with me !!!

“Did we win the battle?” Asked King Wyndham.
“Well it depends how you define winning,”

“Anything can happen, so we should never give up”

Funny, coming fantasy book that you really don’t wanna miss !!! Believe me !!! When I first started this book, I was afraid I would have missed something of the world building or the characters but in truth … it was so funny and hilarious that I couldn’t jump anything for the life of me!!!
A human king trying to win a war against the trolls, the elves who are allies but do not help. A young Pixie girl finding out she has magic like it has never been seen before in the Known World. Some human rebels who are trying to stop a war the humans cannot win. And a stubborn Ogre general who wants war with the humans … simply because!!!!
All of them have one thing in common … the assassination of the Goblin King !!!!
This story was honestly great and really really enjoyable and I am very very glad I had a chance to read it !!!
Now I am definitely hyped up for book two !!!

“The point is, it’s possible, and you’re the only person in the Known World who can do it”

“Who would have thought one simply attempt to poison a King could end up causing this much commotion”

The Magic Fix is a charming, clean-cut fantasy adventure with plenty of wit. A lot of so-called humorous books don't deliver, but The Magic Fix has a huge number of funny lines, some good running jokes and its narration is peppered with jokes/asides throughout. Importantly the funny lines are delivered by a mix of likeable, warm, well-drawn characters and amusingly surly villains.
I laughed out loud often, particularly at a series of escalating events, that I won't spoil, which take place in the Goblin realm.

Centering around a tangle of conflicts and alliances, between Humans, Goblins, Ogres, Elves and Pixies, the book is an enjoyable tale with a classic feel. Its light, smooth style makes it a quick, fun read.

The only mild criticism you could make of it is that you want to find out more about every society's and character's background, but that would have probably made the story unwieldy. The author wisely knows that brevity is the soul of wit and leaves room for a sequel where we will hopefully see more of this world and its inhabitants.

Excellent book, heartily recommend.

The Magic Fix is about “the Known World” which is in danger as there are battles being fought between Humans and Trolls and unfortunately peace is not laying in handreach. The question here is who could bring peace to this world? Is it a flying Unicorn? A few rebels plotting their own plans? Or maybe it all comes to a sweet naïve Pixie who has a powerful gift hidden in her pockets which she has not even discovered herself. The answers can be found in The Magic fix which will bring you on a journey which you will surely enjoy.

My favorite characters of the book were Fulton and Ridley because their journey was funny, sarcastic and always made me want to jump in the book to experience their conversations more highly. Their perspective made me longing to read the book further.

This book is well written, has a lot of sarcasm which surely made me laugh a lot and made my days brighter. I would recommend it to people who can fantasize easily and who are into the fantasy world as much as I am. Have a nice read everyone.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for a review (Mark was delightful and I was super excited to read).

There are so many elements to this book that make it great but I’ve got to say that the multiple POV’s and sarcastic humour are the two ingredients to any book potion that keep me captivated!
The world-building isn’t massively in depth, to the point that I’d say the book is majority character driven, but this makes for an easy fantasy read. Massive strong point for me as someone who prefers dialogue over description - I think this is what made the book an easy 4 star for me as the dialogue really captivated me and had me laughing out loud.

I don’t want to give too much away (READ THE BOOK!) but we’re essentially given an array of fantasy creatures divided across the Known World that MOSTLY want world peace… and what’s the magic fix for that?😉

An easy read, a great author and I really appreciate the opportunity to read this book. I WILL be buying more from Mark, thank you for a great story.

Elves, humans, trolls, ogres, goblins and pixies.
The Magic Fix is a character driven, light hearted fantasy novel with tons of mystical creatures bundled together in one world.
The pacing of the story is quite fast, so you won’t get bored at any point, and is told from the point of views from those different mystical creatures.
All alliances of the kingdoms strive to find peace to end the ongoing war, yet still following their own motive. The political scheme behind it is really fascinating and fun to read.
The main, driving element is the authors sarcastic writing tone, that made me smile all the way through the book.
The setting somehow reminds me of Lord of the Rings, but is certainly different as well.
You can expect a smooth to read, entertaining, sarcastic, light hearted comedy novel, in a world that you’ll want to visit as soon as you dive into it.

the magic fix is a fantasy comedy set in the Known World, consisting of 6 realms for six different species.

The Elves have conflict with the Humans, the Humans have
conflict with the Ogres, the Ogres have conflict with the
Goblins and the Goblins have no idea whose side they're
on..

This books follows multiple different storylines of a
character from each realm: Ridley the Human, Petra the
pixie, the Lord Protector, the Goblin king and King
Wyndham.

This is one of those really cool stories where they all begin
desperately/ as strangers, and then the stories all match up
and come together at the end.

For me, the pros of this book were definitely the world
building, the easy progression of the plot, the character's
and the comedy. This book had one of the best comedic
narrative voices I've read for a long time.

I think some stuff I struggled with within this book was,
when I first starting reading it, getting so many different
stories to keep up with at once was really difficult for me,
especially when every new chapter would flip to a new
perspective. However, it got a lot easier as the story went
on, especially when the plot starting lining up. I also
thought there was definitely some sort of character
development, but I did want to see just that little more - for
example, though the book is in third person, you always
have a focus, and Samorus only had one focused chapter
near the beginning. I would've liked a parallel at the end
from his narrative, showing his pride for Petra and less
hateful mindset.

Overall it was a nice and easy read, and i enjoyed my
temporary time in the Known World :)

A light-hearted and awesome comic relief book set in a fantasy world. There are trolls, goblins, humans, pixies and even a dragon...

The story, or should I say stories, is told from multiple viewpoints as each character has their own motive, or goal. The dialogue was huge in this book, both spoken and inner monologue. I found myself chuckling throughout the book, especially with Ridley.

Montanaro's writing is very smooth and flows easy, making this a very quick read! I found myself thinking of Lord of the Rings, but in a less dramatic way. The world building lacks, but at the same time the characters express what they're seeing, so it's easy to see how this world could look.

Thank you so much for the gifted copy, Mark!

This book had me laughing out loud the whole time! Dripping with sarcasm and contempt, it pokes fun at medieval stories with hilarious descriptions of war, fat stupid kings, and lost battles (they were outnumbered—the more humans that were killed, the more the enemy’s numbers grew, so by the end of the war, they definitely were outnumbered by two to one); questions the existence of unicorns and magic fairies; and just plain tears apart humans living among trolls, ogres, and goblins. The story itself was also amusing, featuring a botched royal murder and tons of miscommunication. As a lover of medieval times and stories, I thoroughly enjoyed the satire laden throughout the entire novel. Sassy and fun!

Thank you to Mark for gifting me a copy of this book and the sequel for me to review.

I absolutely loved this book! It is a quintessential fantasy book full of the species and tropes that we all love and laugh at. The humour in it is brilliant and reminds me of Douglas Adams and Black Adder! Its such brilliantly matter of fact humour that made me laugh out loud multiple times! The story is clever and you just watch as everything comes tumbling down and you can see it about to happen but only just before it does so its as if you are in on the joke! I absolutely can't wait to continue with this series!

This was a very unique read where some of the characters are comically clueless, power hungry and quite sarcastic... or all of the above which made for quite the entertaining read. This is the first book in the series and we follow several viewpoints across the story each with their own version of events. The world created and the scenarios within are so imaginative and thought out, constantly keeping you guessing as to; what's going to happen? who's going to do what or clash with who next?. There are mythical creatures, magic, peril, comedic sarcasm and much much more which I don't want to spoil within.

The Magic Fix is a comedial tale of six realms in the Known World all trying to fix their worlds before more battles ensue.

A quick, easy fantasy read that will keep you turning its pages.

The world building is amazing and the story very much character driven. I think my favourite characters were in the realm of the Pixies.

The story is told from six POV, one from each realm, it's enjoyable, full of wit, action packed and a highly enjoyable read.

I would love to see more of the six realms in the future.

Many thanks to the author for my gifted copy.

The Magic fix was such a nice light read!
The action happens right away and as a character driven story, I loved the sarcastic humor and jibes the author wrote in!
This book explored the classic goblins vs trolls vs Ogres vs Humans with the Pixies mixed in there and I loved how the author created this adventure to kill the Goblin King.
It was just what I needed after an emotionally taxing read!

In the known kingdom you can find five major types of creatures. Humans, Ogres, Trolls, Elves and Pixies. The problem is that not all of them get along… In this comedic adventure there is intrigue, murder and some very quirky personalities!

This book was a super fun read for me! Got a few giggles and smiles out of me. I would consider this a cozy read with very few triggers! Super fun! I would recommend it to anyone who just wants a fun upbeat read!

I don’t usually read comedy so I don’t have a huge context to draw from in relation to this book, but I enjoyed it very much. The writing is very polished and compliments the often sarcastic narration. That said, a lot of the humor is subtle too, so there is a lot to enjoy here. A great read that will make you giggle over and over again. Looking forward to the next one!

Never knew that fantasy and war scenarios could be clubbed with humor, I was excited about this one, and it turned out great. I was expecting laughs all along, and that's exactly what happened.

A classic fantasy filled with Goblins, Pixies, Dragons, Ogres, Trolls, and Humans, The Magic Fix is wonderfully weird, yes just like Phoebe (those who know, know). The book encapsulates a world at war, wherein humans are taking up unconventional ways of bringing peace, the only way to magically fix the whole war situation they could come up with.

The story is told via multiple POVs and yet nowhere was I confused or exhausted by it like I usually am, so it was an absolute win for me. The book was immensely refreshing with its on-point sarcasm and hilarious circumstances (ended up laughing out loud multiple times).

The pace, and the easy language, make it a must-read for people irrespective of the age group they are in. Even if you are not someone who reads often, you would find this one easier and it might genuinely help you gain interest in reading.

Summing it all, I know if I am not in my best moods and really want something to read that cheers me up instantly, Magic Fix it is.
If that doesn't make you wanna read this, IDK what will.

Happy Reading ❤

I can confidently state that “The Magic Fix”, this author’s debut book, is indeed his best work so far.

We follow the journey of two humans, Ridley and Fulton, as they travel a mythical world to kill the king of the Goblins to bring peace to the Known World. Little did they know that a rival gang of Goblins had a similar plan whereas the human King Wyndham wanted the exact opposite, taking steps to save the Goblin King. Throw in some elves, ogres, dragons and other mythical creatures and you have the inevitable recipe for comic disaster.

Although readers will think of Lord of the Rings (especially the Hobbit), Harry Potter and even Game of Thrones, The Magic Fix is less blood thirsty, more light-hearted and more reminiscent of a cross between Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld”, Douglas Adam’s “Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Red Dwarf”. There is humour on every page and there will be times when you can’t help but laugh out loud.

With our heroes in a pickle at the end, the stage is set for a sequel and maybe even a trilogy. Let us hope so.
