I never thought in a million years that the bones would choose me.

The power, the magic, was supposed to go to someone else in the family. I was counting on it.

But now my Grammy Ruby is gone, and here the bones sit on my kitchen table.

I thought bitter relatives would be my biggest problem. But I’ve barely had time to find a familiar before trouble comes a-knocking. The kind that possesses smoldering green eyes and a smile that can turn any woman dumb.

His name is Rogan Kendrick, and he’s certain that someone is hunting down and taking my kind.

According to him, I’m next.

This is a world that I never wanted to be a part of, but magic gives no fucks and takes no prisoners... At least we have that much in common.

I don’t know what my ancestors were thinking when they chose me, but I’m going to give them a run for their money. My name is Lennox Osseous, but you can call me the Bone Witch.

Ivy Asher is addicted to chai, swearing, and laughing a lot (but not in a creepy, laughing alone kind of way). She loves the snow, books, and her family of two humans, and three fur-babies. She has worlds and characters just floating around in her head, and she's lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people who support that kind of crazy.

The cover, I love it, you probably love it, somebody else probably loves it and that is the reason why we probably picked the book to read.

I loved Lennox. She was muddling her way through her new role as we all do with life. I was even a fan of her cursing. What I was not a fan of, was that she basically repeatedly gets taken advantage of by Rogan and 98% of the time is because she was thinking with her vagina and with compassion instead of straight up treating him like a hostile entity who was out to do her harm...and as a result, we have the irritating cliff hangar.

Then we have Rogan. Ooh, I hate liars in general in life, moreso in stories and also pseudo-couples who do not communicate. If you read the book you'll understand why I am calling them a pseudo-couple. The fact that he was meant to be this tough witch, when he just did not pull it off. I was basically over him and his shenanigans.

Was the plot interesting enough? Yes, at some point I was hoping this would be my next Charley Davidson-esque series, but it fell short.

I don't think I'll be continuing with the series.

Update: Hope, abandon all who enter here … there is no severing of the forced tether.

Original Review:
cliffhanger (Peh)*spoilers*

It’s a good read, mostly! The FMC is not bad if a bit clueless, the MMC is a douche who forcibly does something to her to link them together(non-con) and then sets her up to be taken (again, non-con), which is all kinds of f’cked up, as the only thing worse here than forcing someone, is betrayal. (I 5-Star-ed this, so shut it).

If the second book doesn’t fix this with retribution and a severed tether, I won’t go any further, and will come back here and change this review to 1-Star. If it does, I’ll come back here and give future readers ... hope.

Not good

*Spoilers*
Normally I like this author, but this book is just really not good. The relationship between the two main characters is more like abuse than anything else. Leni acts like she's super badass, but doesn't really do much of anything but get taken along for the ride. Rogan pretty much magically rapes her but hey he's hot so it's okay. He constantly lies to her and ends up betraying her in the end. There are no redeeming qualities to him other than he's hot. She's not strong or independent either, so not really a great heroine. Even the (ex)familiars are apathetic and useless. Overall this book actually sucked. I will not be reading the next and I'm really glad this was a KU book instead of having paid for it.

It enrages me when male love interests coerce the female protagonist and then the audience is just expected to shrug it off. I don’t care what the motivation is. It’s disgusting and an absolute dealbreaker for me. There’s no way in hell I will ever get over that sort of behavior. He violates her and then speaks to her like she’s the one being unreasonable for not just meekly accepting that a complete fucking stranger barged into her home and forced her to help him, rather than just fucking asking. You’re the one magically raping someone, you prick. If someone had done that to me, I would never have forgiven them. Never. This is a fictional character and I still want to set him on fire.

The shadows stretch out across the park like they’re rising from a deep sleep and are readying themselves for some mischief. It’s a good night for magic.

5 stars:

I. Loved. This. Book. Mark this one as another reason why I’m much preferring indie books to traditionally published books these days. Ivy Asher has such a fun writing style and I absolutely could not put this one down! I found myself thinking about this book all day (mom life means I only get to read at night) and theorizing all kinds of things about Lennox…and Rogan.

It’s like Serpent & Dove, except better. Much better. I’m currently reading book two, The Blood Witch, and it’s just as amazing as book one. Bonus: the series is on Kindle Unlimited so it’s super easy (and affordable) to binge read.

Perfect for fans of slow-burn enemies to lovers, The Bone Witch will appeal to so many types of readers. It’s urban fantasy, so if completely fictional worlds aren’t your thing but you’d like to try something different than your normal realistic fic, I definitely recommend giving The Bone Witch a try. The witty banter cracked me up and the underlying mystery kept me on the edge of my seat. Please please do yourself a favor and read this book! I’m ready to welcome All The People into the fandom so we can fangirl together.

Thanks so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A couple more quotes because I loved these and couldn’t choose just one:

“Don’t cast the truth aside just because you don’t understand how it works.”

“I take a sip of my coffee, and it forces me to close my eyes and revel in the explosion of flavors on my tongue. I welcome the heat that pours down my throat as I swallow, and I swear this cup of coffee is a better lover than a fair percentage of my past dalliances.” << as a self-proclaimed coffee snob, this one cracked me up!

Average reading

I like Ivy’s books but every other sentence was a snarky reference to something pop culture. One conversation had five references and it was eye rolling, to say the least. This could be a great story line but it just needs to be toned down and more emphasis placed on the plot versus how many supposedly snarky things she can get into one book.

Even though I was expecting to love THE BONE WITCH thanks to the high praise I’ve heard from friends in the bookstagram community, this book still managed to be a surprise. I love reading about witches, even if I don’t do it nearly as much as I would like, and Ivy Asher was able to give me so many of the elements I love in one addicting package!

The Bone Witch drew me in from the very first pages thanks to its protagonist, Lennox, whose humor was off the charts! I love a sassy protagonist, and Lennox was absolutely hilarious. I saw a lot of my own personality in hers, from the need to make irony on things that would otherwise be too much to handle, to her ability to say the awkward thing at exactly the wrong time, to the big heart she tries to hide behind all her swagger.

I appreciated that she wasn’t overtly learned on the world of witchcraft, because it gave me the opportunity to learn alongside her. I’m not always a fan of a contemporary setting, in fact, whenever there’s magic involved, I tend to prefer imagined worlds inspired by the past, but I actually appreciated the modern setting in The Bone Witch. There are several different kinds of witches in this book, as well as other creatures (werewolves make an interesting appearance in this one, for example) and the way the world was built reminded me a lot of intricate secret societies within the human society, which was super interesting.

Another element I thoroughly enjoyed was the romance. Those who follow me for a while know that, though I don’t necessarily need romance to enjoy a book, I’m a happy bean whenever my ship bone tingles, and let me tell you…it’s tingling! I absolutely adored Rogan’s character. He’s by no means perfect, in fact he does some things very early on in the book that made me narrow my eyes at him despite his pretty face wanted to distract my ovaries and his quest made a lute of my heartstrings. But Lennox is a big girl who can fend for herself, and Rogan proved himself worthy of my raging hormones along the way. His grumpy, protective, sometimes arrogant personality was such a great complement to Lennox’s spunk and their banter was entertaining and full of angst from start to finish!

It’s true that there were a few scenes in the middle that I felt were a bit redundant, but they were still entertaining to read and didn’t impact the fast, enjoyable pacing of the story overall. The ending quite literally had me staring wide-eyed into space with my mouth hanging open. I do have a theory…but the cliffhanger is brutal, friends. You’re going to want to have a copy of the second book, The Blood Witch at hand when you start reading this one.

Thank you so much to the author for gifting me a copy of her amazing book. All opinions are my own.

This was really good and the writing was funny and entertaining. Leni is a very down to earth protagonist and she has a lot to deal with in her first days as a bone witch. She has a way of walking into trouble!

I wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. I was to the point of forcing myself to read it but there are so many goods books out there that I don't see the point.

My dislike mainly stems from the terrible world building - I didn't have anything to "tether" myself to so the whole story seemed useless. Also, the main character, Lennox, is pretty annoying and immature.

So for the world building - from what I understand there are magical families and non-magical families? But in each magical family there is only one person who actually has powers? For example, Lennox's family can use bones for magic, which she inherited when her grandmother died. From the start this isn't very interesting to me because there isn't really a magical "society". Just random witches (not sure about other supernaturals, although werewolves are mentioned) scattered in with humans. The idea that only one family member even has powers is slightly lame IMO and doesn't make me think I'm immersed in some magical world or community even. Or that they are particularly powerful. That's not even to mention that I'm not 100% sure that's how their magic community works. The whole explanation was very poorly done, which may be because Lennox herself knows absolutely nothing (while at the same time the power she inherited somehow gave her a bunch of knowledge?), but even then the world building/what we are given isn't enough to make me care about the story. I think from the cover I would expect this to be more of a new adult romance, edgy and interesting. But instead I am seeing the exact opposite.

I don't like the world, or Lennox enough to try to finish this book. It's honestly quite boring. Rogan is wanting Lennox to help him save some missing supernaturals, and she's forced to help, but again he is boring and has no character traits other than being super hot. AND Lennox being stupid and knowing nothing about magic ended up tethering herself to Rogan (which is apparently very hard to do and dangerous?). Idk it's quite a mess and if it get better, cool, but I'm not planning on continuing.

In this moment I feel like a gif I love of a guy playing the guitar and screaming. It’s from a show, but I don’t know which one it is. What I do know is that I loved this book, and now I want everyone to read it!

The Bone Witch is the first The Osseus Chronicles. The main character is Lennox, who unexpectedly inherits her grandmother’s magic and becomes her clan’s new Osteomancer. Lennox always thought the magic was going to go to her cousin and that she would always be living the life of a human, so despite her grandmother’s efforts she never bothered to learn more than what was strictly necessary. But she has to learn fast now, because taking up her grandmother’s shop will be the least of her worries when dark and handsome Blood Witch Rogan walks into her life and…asks for her help in finding his brother, who is only the latest Bone Witch to mysteriously disappear. Lennox could be next.

For starters, I LOVED Lennox (Leni for friends), who’s sass quickly turned her into one of my favorite female protagonists. I lost count of how many times she made me giggle. I also liked how she faces the challenges before her head on without succumbing to fear, even though she wisely does feel some. And, what can I say? I loved Rogan, too. He does some questionable choices, and Leni kicks his smexy behind for it, but the dark and brooding characters always make me weak in the knees. Their interactions were amazing! Fun, intense and at some point very angsty. I am very much looking forward to them doing something about it. (I hope. *sends a silent prayer to the bookish gods.)

As far as the storyline goes, I’m invested in the mystery slowly unfolding. My Murder-She-Wrote-loving self is trying to investigate alongside the characters, although I admit I’m still nowhere close to formulating any coherent theory. Jessica Fletcher would be disappointed. But it’s not my fault Rogan distracts me!

This book is perfect for fans of paranormal books, witches, romance and intriguing plots. Am I saying everyone should read it? If you like adult romance like me, then yes. You definitely should!

Thank you to the author for blessing me with a copy. Opinions are my own.

Lennox never thought in a million years that the bones would choose her.
The power, the magic, the responsibility, that was supposed to go to someone else in the family.
But Grammy Ruby is dead and now the bones are hers. And she is not ready.
Not only does she have to deal with nasty relatives, she also has to figure out why others in the witch community were disappearing. She doesn’t want to be next.
Armed with a farting dog, Hoot, and a Gladiator-built, hulking brute, she must step up into her role. She’s the chosen one who didn’t want to be chose.
"Well, being that you were just chosen as the next Supreme Boner, oops, I mean Supreme Osteomancer, I'm going to go with yes."

It's not the letter to Hogwarts I spent my middle school years hoping would drop down my chimney though. This bag of bones leads only to a life of servitude, suffering, and societal rejection.

Lennox is a very relatable protagonist and within the first few pages, I knew I was going to enjoy joining her in what adventure she was destined for. I loved the inclusion of modern references that I could laugh to.

I'm so ready for a glass of wine, my just big enough tub, and some Witcher. Lord knows I need a healthy dose of Henry Cavill in my life to remind me why I shouldn't look into becoming a lesbian.

These people just shoved us off a road and down an embankment at sixty miles an hour. What is he expecting them to do, shout my bad and be on their way?
"If you go straight up Karen and ask to speak to a manager, you're on your own.”

Overall, an urban fantasy with a fresh feel with a heroine who seems realistically over-her-head where things don’t just fall into her lap and she doesn’t magically land on her feet thrust into a new world.

My first read by this author...

The story is good when they get serious, but there's too much pop references and shenanigans just to fill and make the h "funny and snarky! Leni got on my nerves a lot of times with her no filter brain and her vagina brain...
Every beefy guy got very detailed "could be fuck material internal debate" and that led her to be fucked over by the H.

I LOVED the concept of this book! There was a lot of necessary and helpful world building with lots of complex details about all of the different types of magic there is, their rules, and witches in general! There were multiple moments where I found myself laughing out loud which always elevates the reading experience for me! That cliffhanger hurt me not because it was hard to handle but because of the betrayal that it entailed! I really don't know where I stand with Rogan at this point but I will definitely be returning for book two to see what happens next!

I would recommend going into this book thinking of it as a serial urban fantasy. I wish I would have been able to set my expectations there when I started. The heroine is unapologetically herself, prone to funny tangents, and a kick-ass witch who is learning on the fly. Her forced sidekick is all uncompromising enigmatic alpha-male. They hurt each other and act without forethought--which at times drove me up a wall--but I enjoyed the story.

This book was listed as romance on Amazon. Sadly for me, that wasn't the case. And while I can see that there may be some romance further along in the series, it wasn't in this book. Adding to that, there is no plot resolution here. None. It is 100% serial. So, if you want some resolution, you are going to have to commit to reading the whole series. Thankfully it is on KU and I have free time to continue the series to find out what happens in the end.

Dear Future Mile,

Let's be honest, in the beginning, you used this book as a sleeping aid. Nothing bad about that but you probably should have tried to pay a bit more attention. Alas, what your sleepy self did read was enough for a review.

You're not usually a fan of witch books and this one didn't do much to help change that.

Exhibit A: main character walks around with a bag of bones. Now obviously with the title of this book being "The Bone witch", she wasn't going to carry around a bag of snacks. But bones of dead animals and ancestors? mmm bye.

Insert saving scene below:
-Heroine gets hot and heavy with the jacked up lycan
-Main sexy badass gets super jealous and rips them apart
Hello wake-up call!

And we're back to being annoyed and sleepy.

Main guy constantly betrays the heroine. What do we do? Just threaten him but never do anything about it. Yep, that's all.

And guess what, the book ends with a major cliffhanger with someone betraying the heroine again. I'm not telling you who though. But it's someone we know. Someone who has done it before.

Sincerely,

Sleepily annoyed Mile

This is for people who like the TV show friends. I unfortunately, am not one of those people.
The entire book is laced with cringey, cartoonish humour that’s almost always sex related when there was no real need. Not my thing, but maybe it is yours.
The plot was entirely centred around the love interest to the point every character the protagonist knows simply is not mentioned after 1/3rd of the way through, and the love interest himself is an entitled lair who only speaks when spoken to. There is no real ending to this book, though somehow no real cliffhanger either to make you read the next.

A lot was said but not a lot happened. The magic here is interesting, and I think I like our FMC, but the romance is non-existent and we do a lot of running around annoyed rather than actually doing anything.

“Just before I open the bag and pour the bone pieces on the table, I’m hit with an overwhelming feeling of purpose and worthiness, and for a moment, it steals my breath away. This is right. This is what I was made for.”

I’ve been needing a fast-paced, rollercoaster of a fantasy adventure series in my life lately and I’ve definitely found it in the Osseous Chronicles! The writing style of this book is a perfect blend of hysterical comedy and dark mysterious drama, a combination I absolutely love and crave since discovering amazing indie authors like Raven Kennedy and now Ivy Asher!

I was immediately obsessed with the central characters (Tad is my ultimate fave!) and completely sucked into the world Ivy has so masterfully built. By far the best element for me is the brilliant and sassy heroine at its heart—Lennox. GOD this girl made me laugh my entire ass off AND feel her pain in the marrow of my bones. She owns my heart, but do not even get me started on ROGAN KENDRICK y’all—UGH. The tension between these two is so fiery and intense, I’m so ready for more. I literally couldn’t wait longer than a few seconds before downloading Blood Witch to continue their journey!

Altogether, this book was so much freaking FUN and I cannot recommend it enough! The Bone Witch is a witchy urban fantasy and slowburn paranormal romance all wrapped into one, perfect for fans of Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin and the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning.

2 1/2 stars. An average urban fiction. There are some very funny moments. The MC was too obsessed with sex at times. I didn't like Rogan much. I understood the motives of one of his dubious actions right when he and the MC first met but he didn't seem to comprehend how terrible coercion is. Knowing how these things usually go and they eventually end up together, I hope there is a reckoning and retaliation before that happens because he has a lot to make up for.

DNF’ed at 20%. Honestly, nothing super wrong with this book, it was just cringey, with a poor attempt at enemies to lovers. I didn’t really decide to DNF this as much as I put it down and never picked it back up.

This is my first Ivy Asher book and I’m so impressed! I’m obsessed with witches and it has been so long since I’ve been given a fun witchy read, but this one definitely delivered!

Lennox didn’t plan on taking over as the head osteomencer, but when the purple bag of bones shows up, she knows that her life is about to change. What she didn’t expect was being tethered to a random stranger who needs her help in locating her brother. Without much of a choice, Lennox must help him if she wants any chance of breaking the forced tether.

I absolutely adored Lennox. She was written so well and I felt like I could really connect with her character. Although she did not expect to take over her family’s legacy, she threw herself in and learned all she could. She persevered when many others would simply give up. She is also not afraid to speak her mind, even at the expanse of her own embarrassment.

I loved the tension between Lennox and Rogan. Their banter gave me life and the slow burn romance between them is killing me! But it works.

That ending though! Can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

I read the omnibus of this as I have a pretty special edition that I picked up at Rare so I'm reviewing this one as a complete whole. For the most part, I found this an enjoyable read. I'm a huge fan of Order of Scorpions so I was expecting to be all over this as much as I was that one. Unfortunately, this just wasn't in the same hemisphere for me, to be fair to this book though it wasn't the writing, more the writing style. This had a jokey slapstick vibe and Order of Scorpions just read darker and much grittier. So this is more than likely predominantly a me thing.

This follows the journey of newly initiated witch Lennox after she inherits the mantle of Bone witch after the demise of her grandmother. Rather than being born with magic, her line inherits it upon the death of the current Osteomancer and the magic itself crosses over to their successor. Leni never expected to be chosen and this event changes everything for her.

Pulled back into a world she purposely distanced herself from Leni is shockingly ignorant of the politics and internal intricacies. When a gorgeous blood witch turns up at her late grandmother's shop asking for assistance she's dragged headfirst into the mystery of missing witches and when Leni then accidentally tethers them together it makes for a very rocky start.

This is all told from Leni's POV and there's a whole lot of slapstick humour and innuendos thrown around mixed in with all of the danger. I did find myself laughing aloud several times but there were instances where it could get a bit too much. There were also some definite deep moments i just think it was overshadowed somewhat by all of the included humour.I liked Leni a lot she was quite the character, I also found Rogan appealing he was a lot more beta than I usually go for but he was likeable. I did find some of the cutesy PDA used here to be quite cringe but again that's going to be down to personal taste.

Overall though I enjoyed this it isn't one I'd probably re-read but it had a decent strong storyline and it did manage to keep my attention. My favourite part of this was probably the final resolution I appreciated the way this was all wrapped up and vengeful Leni was delicious to behold. In conclusion, this probably rounded out at a 3.5 star read for me some parts shone more than others and were stronger mainly the emotional cliffhangers and the finish which I found strong.

The Bone Witch delivers a perfect mixture of witchy atmosphere, banter-filled fun and lots of sexual tension. The story follows Lennox, who is the last person the Osseous family thought would be chosen as the next Bone Witch. Ever since the bones selected her, her life was turned completely upside down. Hardly prepared for the role, Leni is forced to trust her instincts as an Osteomancer and join forces with an extremely attractive and yet utterly stubborn Blood witch.

I really liked Leni's character, she is fierce and confident, ready to take on the responsibilities of her new role even if she has no idea what she is mixed into. I love her inner thought-dialogues that are filled with sarcasm that had me laughing out loud. While Rogan at first had me dubious, I wasn't sure who's side he was on and found his character very mysterious. The romance is slow-burn, enemies to lovers with betrayal and angst. I also really enjoyed when other magical creatures appeared in the story (we have Lycans people! and really hot ones ;P)

The ending had me reeling and I need to pick up the sequel right away, lucky me I have it here in hands! Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review.

WTH!

Okay, damnit this needs to be said! I am a Ivy Asher fan! Yeah, I said it but damnit Ivy, you just turn my world upside down with this book... Like seriously WTH? While, I'm loving our bad ass heroine I'm confused as hell about our "hero" and I use that term loosely... What the hell is up with Rogan? Is he good or is he bad? Is he catching feeling for Lennox or just playing her? I'm quite invested with storyline now... I need to know what's going to happen to my girl Lennox. So off to book two I go..;)
