Five Little Words by Jackie Walsh is an entertaining thriller.

Laura gets cards in the mail congratulating her on having a son, but one card says, “Your husband is a murderer. Where was he the night Vicky was killed?”

Everyone has secrets even the characters that seem the most innocent. Laura has a secret she is afraid of her husband finding out.

Thank you NetGalley and Hera Books for this ARC of Five Little Words.

Five little words creating one gigantic doubt.

Newly wed and newly maternal Laura is doubting her husband because someone sent her a warning disguised as a congratulations card. Figuring out who and why shifts her into overdrive uncovering the truth.

Just when her life seemed to be back on track after...

The reader doesn't know or discover her secrets until later but as a recent transplant Laura unknowingly fits into her husband's village town. Everyone is hiding something.

I like domestic mysteries and while this isn't groundbreaking for the genre, I really enjoyed it!

Brand new mom, Laura Caldwell, opens the card that was dropped through her letterbox...expecting a congratulatory card on the birth of her child. What she gets is something far different. The card only has one message ... Your Husband Is A Killer.

Shortly before she gave birth, a local barmaid was murdered. Is this what the note is hinting at? Her husband, Colin, and she have a terrific marriage and the baby has made it better. They're living in a small village, where she's been fully accepted ... or at least she thinks so.

She just cant .. won't ... believe that her husband is a killer. Trying to find the truth is tough ... especially as she is hiding secrets herself ... and has been for years.

There’s a tangled web between this perfect couple – and the truth might just destroy them...

The intricate plot is swarming with a town with secrets ... a mother with secrets ... and possible her husband's secrets. Lots of twists and turns keep the reader turning the pages quite rapidly. Characters are solidly drawn. The ending is quite unexpected and surprising.

Many thanks to the author / Hera Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This one was alright. It was super easy to read and definitely kept me turning the pages. However, the character development was lacking, and the ending was rushed. So a bit of a mixed bag.

This is my first read by this author but proved to be an exciting one with some very good characters.
A fairly straight forward plot but one that keeps the pages turning rapidly. The book starts with new mother Laura Caldwell opening congratulation cards that have arrived at her house. Nothing unusual there until she reads one card that is completely unexpected. The card states five words 'your husband is a murderer'. Although Laura can't believe that her loving husband Conor is responsible for the murder of the local barmaid it still raises enough concerns in her mind to avoid speaking to him about it.

Laura wants to know more about her husband but she has secrets of her own that she is keen to remain buried. But while Laura fights to discover the truth about her husband, she’s also holding dark secrets of her own; secrets she’s spent years trying to hide. Who sent the card and why? Both Laura and Conor have secrets in their past but could those secrets destroy what they have together. Lots of twists and turns in the very good fast read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Hera Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Five Little Words by Jackie Walsh is a compulsively addictive read that pulled me in from the very start, and did not let go until the final page.

Laura Caldwell has never been happier, living the life of her dreams with husband Conor. Having just given birth to the couple's first child, son Shay, life could not be more perfect. The bubble of bliss quickly bursts, however, when Laura receives an anonymous card. Instead of the anticipted message of congratulations, this one contains a far more sinister message consisting of five little words; Your husband is a murderer. With the unsolved case of murdered local woman Vicky Murphy very much the talk of the village, Laura's world is suddenly turned upside down as she begins to question everything she thought she knew about her beloved husband. And it seems that Laura is not without some secrets of her own.

This is a thoroughly compelling mystery that had me fully invested in discovering who, in fact, killed Vicky Murphy. Another wonderful read from Ms Walsh, I cannot wait to see where she takes us next. 4.5 stars

Many thanks to NetGalley and Hera Books for this ARC.

I was attracted to this book because of it’s cover and premise, but once I started reading it, I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as I would have liked to. I felt that there was a lack of character development with the main characters since they weren’t exciting nor appealing to read about. Also, the narration of the plot felt flat most of the times.

However, it makes for a super quick read, thanks to the short chapters and there was an unexpected twist at the end which was quite unexpected and good.

Five little words for this book:

SUSPENSEFUL

ENTERTAINING

MYSTERIOUS

GOOD

FAST PACED, SHORT READ

This book is more of a small town suspense where Laura, a young new mother receives an alarming card which says 5 little words which changes her life forever and pushes her down a rabbit hole. She receives this anonymous card along with the gifts proffered as CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE BABY BOY.

Read the book to know what happens next.

Laura is a newcomer to her husband Conor's quiet, sleepy small-town, but it's not as sleepy as of late -- Vicky, a local barmaid, was brutally murdered and the police have no suspects. Days later, Laura brings their newborn home for the first time and finds a card, stating: your husband is a murderer. We follow Laura as she dives deeper into the town gossip and her suspicions of who sent the letter and if it could possibly be true.

This was a slow burn for me -- the story is told from the perspective of Laura, who can be a bit frustrating at times. She's a bit all over the place, being a new mom and having past baggage. I think having a few snippets from Conor's perspective would have been insightful and interesting.

The storyline plateaued for me in the middle, but really made up for it with the ending. You will be guessing the outcome into the final pages. There's quite a few suspicious characters and circumstances, so it's difficult to predict what ultimately ends up happening. It was a page-turner for me in the final few chapters!

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of this book!

This was one of my fastest reads, with short chapters and straightforward plot line, author Jackie Walsh managed to capture my interest and keep it shooting onwards.

The book piqued my curiosity when a new mother Laura received a note of warning about her husband among the congratulations cards. That started her spiral to action where every scene was imbibed with the color of her suspicion. Not that she didn’t have skeletons in her closet. The author managed to tease me well with a line inserted in the prose wherein I too had doubts about the main character.

The chapters seemed to move like the flash of light, the characters were varied. I began to see them through Laura’s eyes, and I was sure they were all involved in something nefarious. I liked how I was thrown into the whole rigmarole of Laura’s suspicions. Then came my infamous niggles. More character development, sharper prose, a depth to the story with twists would have made my pulse skyrocket.

Overall, this was an interesting story where the book gave me a gossipy feel of a small town mystery. The final twist made it a fun read.

his enthralling mystery/thriller is narrated entirely from the perspective of new mum Laura as she carried out the everyday tasks that are all part of taking care of a new born baby whilst struggling with the feelings of anxiety and paranoia that had been stirred up by the shocking revelation written within a congratulations card that had arrived in the post on the same day that she arrived home from the hospital with little baby Shay. She knows that there is no chance in hell that her loving husband Conor, the hero of Ballycall the small village where they live is a murderer. But once the tiny seed of doubt is planted, it swiftly takes root and spreads throughout her head, growing into blanket of suspicion and mistrust. After it comes apparent to Laura that Conor is keeping secrets from her and with a lot of encouragement from her sister Amanda, Laura starts her own investigation into the victim's murder. She hopes that she will be able to uncover the identity of the card sender and proof of Conor's innocence but all she uncovers is more secrets and lies. She also can't help feeling inadequate everytime she has a interaction with her overbearing mother in law Maggie and the fact that Conor's glamourous ex girlfriend still works with him at the brewery only added to her feelings of paranoia and insecurity. Add on top of all this the fact that Laura was harbouring a secret of her own and you can easily imagine how much of a hot mess her character was. As the story unfolded, I had mixed feelings about Laura but I couldn't help admiring her dedication to her husband and her determination to uncover the truth. The small village of Ballycall was a typical, quaint, chocolate box village who's residents were a mixed bag of realistic, vivid characters. It was the type of place where everyone knew everyone else's business, you couldn't burn your toast in the morning without the villagers knowing about it before you even had a chance to eat it or throw it into the bin. But who was the killer who was hiding in plain sight? Could it be Conor? His mother Maggie? His best friend, short tempered Noal? Conor's glamourous ex girlfriend? Or what about Pat, the mysterious man who lived on the grounds of Conor and Laura's house? There was numerous suspects but who was the killer and what was their motive?

This is a well written, enthralling thriller that has the theme of family as the heart of it's plot. The believable characters were the veins that pumped the blood into the heart of the story. The secrets and lies gradually unfurled, tumbled and fell like the leaves on the trees that grew at the bottom of Conor and Laura's garden. I thought this was a very enjoyable, gripping read that kept me guessing throughout. Very very highly recommended.

I liked this book and thought it was fast-paced with a decent twist, though there were a couple things I didn't love. It centers on Laura, who just had a baby with her new-ish husband, Conor- a man who was the most eligible bachelor in the small town in which he lives. Laura moves from Dublin to be with him and knows she is judged by the townsfolk, but she is happy in her marriage. The story starts with the murder of a local bartender that happened right before Laura has her baby- she comes home from the hospital to a card telling her that Conor is the murderer. The rest of the book follows Laura through trying to figure out what happened, and how well she really knows her husband, while also trying to hold on to a secret of her own.

The book moves at a fast clip, with the action starting almost immediately. There are a couple twists throughout, and while I had an inkling of one of them, I hadn't figured out the context yet so was still surprised when it was unveiled. The author did a good job of tying up the loose ends and making the storylines fit together.

There were a couple things that bothered me with the book- one was Laura herself, who seemed a little superficial, always assuming that everyone was thinking about how she was from the "big city", and also had a tendency to jump to conclusions and overreact about every piece of information she was given. The other thing that bothered me was the fact that the new baby was treated almost like an accessory throughout the book- even the times when she mentions crying or lack of sleep, it didn't come with the authenticity of what the experience with a newborn baby is really like. I suspect the author has not spent much time around newborns.

Overall, I'd recommend the book, though- once I got past my couple small nits, I enjoyed the story and thought it was a good read for those who like the mystery and domestic suspense genres.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a little slow going for me. The author tried to make you sit on the edge of your seat in anticipation but I found some secrets were strung along for just a week bit too long. Some of them were a let down when revealed. There wasn’t as much thriller involved as I would like even if it did start out with a dead village lady. I also found it hard to like the characters. Somehow they all seemed a bit shallow and two dimensional. I’d rate this 2.5 starts if we could give half marks as it was a decent attempt that just fell a little shy of the mark.

Laura receives a card in the post congratulating her on the birth of her newborn baby. But the note says something more sinister, "Your husband is a murderer".
Laura starts to suspect her husband when things don't add up
Her husband, Conor is keeping secrets. Can he really be a murderer?
But Laura too is keeping secrets about her past that if they came to light could mean the over world she created would crumble.
The voice and pace of Five Little Words was perfect. Told by Laura's point of view. She is a dynamic character that made me feel for her and think she was crazy at the same time. A can't put down thriller. A nail biting read.

The cover and blurb is quite intriguing! The birth of a baby should be a happy and loving experience, unfortunately it’s a challenging time for new parents Laura and Conor Caldwell. As they bring Shay home, Laura receives a card in the mail with five little words “your husband is a murderer”! What?! Is this for real, who would accuse her husband, who can you trust? So many questions. This is a slow burn mystery with some twists. Thank you to Hera Books and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.

I found this book quite slow .I mean I didn't find the story to be engaging. The first 150 pages are just focusing on Laura doubting Connor and not even confronting him about it .

I found her character pretty dumb at times .She didn't even confront her husband after seeing Vicky's photo in his drawer.

Secondly my issue with this book was I was guessing it to be just like another domestic thriller books where wife gets delusions or has psychological issues .Her husband tries to get rid of the wife for second marriage, etc. Etc .

I would have appreciated if the author could have build on the story at a fast pace.

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Five Little Words by Jackie Walsh.

In this Irish drama, Laura has just gotten a note through the mail box. Delighted, she opens it, knowing that it will be a congratulations for the arrival of her new baby boy. Instead it's a shocking accusation that her husband is responsible for the well known death of one of the ladies in town.

Being newly wed to Shay means not knowing him inside and out. Could her new husband be responsible for something that heinous? And if so, how would she find out?

A very classic whodunit with a domestic spin. I enjoyed it just fine. The characters were a bit one dimensional, and it dragged at times, but for an easy way to pass the time, this will do.

Five Little Words is a well written story that I really enjoyed. Laura is happily married to her husband Conor and has just given birth to her son.

What would you do if you got a card in the post saying your husband is a murderer? That’s what Laura needs to decide. Based in a small village there’s an unsolved murder- is Laura’s husband the murderer?

This is a well written story. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Five little words 'you're husband is a murderer' what would you do when you come home from having your baby and in amongst the thank you cards you discover one with those 5 words.
Here's what I would do take my baby and run, ask no questions. However Laura has a tad more faith in her husband Connor than I would. So after receiving this cryptic (is it cryptic though that is debatable) note Laura decides to do a bit of investigating. But she ends up with more doubt and more questions than when she started.

So I really really enjoyed this book. It's one of those that has you thinking from the offset. I honestly questioned Laura's sanity for staying from the beginning, espically as less than 24 hours before they welcomed their baby into the world local barmaid Vicki is murdered.
But my version is a very short story, barely a chapter so thank god this book took another route.

I found it very interesting as, as we are trying to work out if Connor is a murderer of not it is obvious that Laura has secrets of her own. In the new life she has the bug house, important husband, small town and money jts hinted at throughout that she doesn't feel like she deserves any of it. I found both these done it and what us she hiding equally enticing.

I loved the way the author takes on the assumptions regradibg wealth and happiness. The world coverts Laura yet she has a lonely sheltered life. People in the town think she's a snob. She has tbe mother in law from hell but she thought it was worth it because she had the world's best husband, yet that image of him starts to slip quickly.

I liked the investigative process and found myself hooked with her page that turned I wanted more and I wanted it now. There is a light relief of comedy whenever the mother in law is about. She in a way is the worse mother in law you could get yet she's good, just a super proud ma.

I love the Irish setting to this book and its not littered with colonialism which makes it a much more pleasant read. Although there is the odd phrase where I found myself understanding so no issue there the prose is ideal structured and flows nicely from chapter to chapter.

Laura as our lead is, to me, a strange one. Be csuse her initial reaction to the card seems bizarre to me but I'm not judging. Plus he love for her sister is ten to none so obviously the only person she can trust.

In conclusion read this book it ticks so many boxes and one is psychological thriller. This is one of my fav reads this year it shocking when all truths or part of them is reviled. Mouth open in absolute confusion ha. But yes I like. 5 🌟

The story is set in a small village in Ireland. You get a real sense of what it is like to live in a small area and of the community as well as the gossiping. After receiving a card telling Laura her husband is a murderer, well it has her questioning just how well she really knows her husband.

Not only is Laura keen to discover the truth about her husband, she also has a secret of her own that she is hiding. Obviously I was keen to discover both! The author doesn’t give to much away though and I was glued to the pages and racing through them to see just what they were.

There are some red herrings doted throughout which had me second guessing and pointing the finger at the wrong people. Laura I felt sorry for as, as much as she loves her husband, she isn’t as fond of his family and friends and apart from her sister Amanda, she is quite isolated where she is, leaving her not knowing which way to turn at times. The secrets when they start to unravel were well worth waiting for.

Five Little Words is a novel that will mess with your mind. It’s very much a story about hidden secrets of which some threaten to rip peoples lives apart. Who doesn’t love a good secret and I so enjoyed reading the gossip and getting caught up in it all. A compelling read that will have you hooked throughout.

My thanks to Hera Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

I'm one of those people who thinks that if a book opens up telling me that everything in a character's life is perfect, it is actually far from it... And that is exactly what happens here. Perfect husband, newborn baby... Ahhh bliss... WRONG. Laura's first instinct when the card arrives is that someone is playing a cruel joke on her happy family. Clearly someone isn't a fan... I mean, who would drop a note in the mail with 5 little words: Your Husband is a Murderer.

Laura's heart explains away the message - it's all a cruel joke... my husband would never... yadda yadda yadda.
Laura's brain, however, begins to second guess everything.

And that right there is when the long stuffed deep down secrets come bubbling to the surface. Maybe the picture hanging on the wall isn't what it appears...

True to the thriller that this is, I loved it. It was full of juicy secrets, revenge, distaste, heart, and truth. Needless to say, it didn't take me long to complete it...

Thank you for allowing me to read this and give my honest opinion.

This book was a good intro to murder mystery. I liked the characters and I totally did not see the twist happening (which was in the last chapter btw!!!!). I liked it. I'm not one for small-town settings but this one did it ok. I liked pat, I thought he was quirky and cute. It seemed kind of like the whole book Laura was stir-crazy and kind of just connecting the dots in her imagination cause she was bored.

I liked it I'd give it a 3.5 if GR would do half stars.
